Hannah Marsh has survived the beginning of the apocalypse. She managed to keep her two little sisters alive long enough to reunite their family. Everything should be perfect...but Hannah knows better than anyone that nothing is ever perfect. The government has found a way to contain every infected person, trapping them all together, her dad is acting suspiciously like a Bad-born, her sister is trying to act out, and every day it becomes more painfully obvious that she just doesn't fit in. When her sister gets herself into a bad predicament, it falls on Hannah's young shoulders to try to save her. She survived the Bad-born once. What could go wrong? **This book features a 17-year-old girl fighting for her life during an apocalyptic world. It is book 2 in the series and contains a lot of violence.
Slated & Contained is a fantastic continuation of the series, expanding everything that made the first book work while deepening the worldbuilding in some really satisfying ways. The story builds on the established lore of the Good-Born, Bad-Born, and Clean Slates, giving readers a better sense of how these groups fit into the broader world. What stood out most to me this time was how the author incorporated more politics and government response into the fallout from book one. It added another layer of complexity to the story and made the world feel more grounded and lived-in.
Hannah continues to be a solid main character, and I liked how her powers evolved at a natural pace throughout the book. It didn’t feel forced or like she was suddenly overpowered; instead, it felt like steady growth that’s setting her up for bigger challenges in books three and four. The darker and gorier moments also hit harder this time. They really underscored just how dangerous the Bad-Born are and that not everyone in this world can be saved or redeemed. It gave the story a sharper edge that worked well with the higher stakes.
The relationships also took a nice step forward here. Hannah’s bond with her found family especially stood out, adding more emotional weight to the story. It’s not just about survival anymore; it’s about connection and loyalty in a world that’s getting more chaotic by the page. The sense of maturity across the board, from character growth to themes really elevates this sequel. Hannah’s learning to accept her reality, and that shift gives this book a more upper-YA tone compared to the first one.
By the end, I was more than ready to dive into the next installment. The pacing was tight, the action scenes were well-written, and the world feels bigger and more dangerous than ever. If you liked Slated, this follow-up delivers everything you’d hope for in a sequel; more lore, more heart, and more intensity. I’d highly recommend this one to anyone who enjoys YA dystopian series with a bit of grit and a good amount of bloodshed.
Book two in the Slated Series was a very exciting read to say the least. Our heroine Hannah Marsh is able to get her two younger sisters to safety with their Uncle and Good-born community. However they are all far from safe. With the government working against them by "containing"them as well as the Bad-born under the same roof, there's danger at every turn. Are there actually Bad-born members living among the Good-born....my guess is yes! Hannah's "abilities" are changing on a daily basis and increasing in strength, though she's keeping that little bit of info to herself for now. Then out of no where, the tables are turned and Hannah's sister are once again in danger from the Bad-born.
This book had lots of nasty visuals in it, but not enough to stop reading....oh no sir. In fact it made me want to keep going and cheering for the Good-born! The secondary characters in this book are really great and have some very interesting "abilities". I was totally floored by the ending our author threw at us readers. WOW!! Can't wait for book three!
Like the first book in the series I read this book in 1 sitting. Although it is aimed at young adults it can be quite gruesome at times. Nevertheless it is realistic tale of a young 17 year old girl making sure her siblings are safe even if it means protecting them from the father person (exhibiting signs of Bad Born), in an infected man made virus world. Many twists happen as Hannah saves first be middle sister from some Bad Born and then her younger sister. But some people are like Hannah neither good nor BAD and they too are acting to survive. The Good Born and The Bad Born are those that have been exposed to this virus all of these 'people' are being herded into containment facilities.... and there is a hint that something sinister... is happening. The book ends with another cliff hanger and I will read the next instalment as I want to know if the girls survive as kind humans.

this was a strong sequel in the Slated series, it had great characters that felt like the same characters. I look forward to read more from the author Christina Lanier.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Continuing the story of Hannah Marsh. She's already been Slated. Blank Slate. Now she's Contained. Stuck inside a dome, by the government. Her powers are still growing and when her sister's life is threatened again, she willingly goes back to the bad-born to save her.
Can I just say that I had no clue quite how twisted the author's mind was until this second book. That's a good thing.
The good, the bad, and the slated! I think this second book was even better than the first. Hannah protected her sisters and got them back to her Uncle Mike and the good born. Come find out what happens next. You won't be disappointed. I am so excited to read more!
