The release of Wind and Truth in December 2024—the fifth and final book in the first arc of the #1 New York Times bestselling Stormlight Archive series—marks a significant milestone for me. This series is my love letter to the epic fantasy genre, and it’s the type of story I always dreamed epic fantasy could be. Now is a great time to get into the Stormlight Archive since the first arc, which begins with Way of Kings, is complete.
During our crowdfunding campaign for the leatherbound edition of Words of Radiance, I announced a fifth Secret Project called Isles of the Emberdark, which came out in the summer of 2025. Coming December 2025 is Tailored Realities, my non-Cosmere short story collection featuring the new novella Moment Zero.
Defiant, the fourth and final volume of the series that started with Skyward in 2018, came out in November 2023, capping an already book-filled year that saw the releases of all four Secret Projects: Tress of the Emerald Sea, The Frugal Wizard’s Handbook for Surviving Medieval England, Yumi and the Nightmare Painter, and The Sunlit Man. These four books were all initially offered to backers of the #1 Kickstarter campaign of all time.
November 2022 saw the release of The Lost Metal, the seventh volume in the Mistborn saga, and the final volume of the Mistborn Era Two featuring Wax & Wayne. Now that the first arc of the Stormlight Archive is wrapped up, I’ve started writing the third era of Mistborn in 2025.
Most readers have noticed that my adult fantasy novels are in a connected universe called the Cosmere. This includes The Stormlight Archive, both Mistborn series, Elantris, Warbreaker, four of the five Secret Projects, and various novellas, including The Emperor’s Soul, which won a Hugo Award in 2013. In November 2016 all of the existing Cosmere short fiction was released in one volume called Arcanum Unbounded. If you’ve read all of my adult fantasy novels and want to see some behind-the-scenes information, that collection is a must-read.
I also have three YA series: The Rithmatist (currently at one book), The Reckoners (a trilogy beginning with Steelheart), and Skyward. For young readers I also have my humorous series Alcatraz vs. the Evil Librarians, which had its final book, Bastille vs. the Evil Librarians, released in 2022. Many of my adult readers enjoy all of those books as well, and many of my YA readers enjoy my adult books, usually starting with Mistborn.

This took me longer to finish compared to the other books in the series, it’s a little slow paced and I had to keep myself going to get to the finish line!
There is some story development but not as much as I wanted, sadly! The ending chapters however got me going and I couldn’t put the book down! So now I have to get on to the next part since I’m left with many questions!!!!

This was really slow and I didn‘t feel like we made that much progress in the story or with the characters. Compared to the other phenomenal books in the series so far this was a bit disappointing, however I‘ll get right into the next one and hope it‘ll pick up.

This is the first part of the third book in The Stormlight Archive series.
The human race has been geographically scattered, struggling to survive let alone advance, and involved in continual skirmishes with many enemies for some time, but now a new foe has appeared that puts their continued existence in immediate danger. How can the humans unite and what strength will they find to overcome this mighty enemy, who seeks to permanently eradicate or enslave them?
It goes without saying at this point, but all of the stars need to be awarded for Sanderson's ingenuity! Many previous mysteries that were uncovered or facts that were learned became understood here and I was once again left speechless at the foresight and clever plotting that went into crafting this series' over-arcing story-line.
Much of the first portion of this book was very slow in pace as the focus remained on political scheming and behind-the-scenes plotting, before a battle-heavy and action-orientated focus was allowed to dominate. I highly appreciated seeing the puzzle pieces come together and understanding for the world history, the magic system, and the differing individuals who resided in it, was granted at the end.

It feels like I’ve been reading this for the longest time... I guess this is what happens when you have a break from the series and it turns into pretty much a year. ANYWAY...
Not my favourite book of the series. But if Dalinar is your favourite character you’ll probably enjoy this more than I did.
I can tell you specifically why this was a 4 star read and not a 5, for me it felt slightly repetitive but then at the same time I completely missed things that weren’t obvious, I had to ring my brother to help me out aha! However I do think Part Two is going to be AMAZING so I’m super excited for that.
Really really excited that Jasnah is back and I loved seeing a young Adolin, but also everything going on with Dalinar... there is so much going on and so much to say but it’s super hard because this is literally only one half of a whopper of a book!
I’m going to leave it a week and then pick up part two, but the characters in this series are soooo good!

2 to 2.5 stars. Part one and part two of Oathbringer were quite a letdown compared to what I've come to expect after Way of Kings and Words of Radiance. I found it very slow-paced and uninteresting. Much of it seemed like filler material. Hoping the next half of the book is better.

I think after 2 loooooong books and this part I am starting to understand the world of Roshar
I do not know if someone said this before or not, but here is my take
This world is CORRUPT, and every character mentioned in it is also CORRUPT.
He wasn’t broken. All of them were broken. Alethi society—lighteyed and dark. Maybe all of humankind. “Well?” the regent demanded. “Speak up, man!” Moash remained silent, overwhelmed. He wasn’t the exception, always ruining what he was given. Men like Kaladin were the exception—the very, very rare exception. These people proved it. There was no reason to obey lighteyes. They had no power, no authority. Men had taken opportunity and cast it to the crem.
and no one is as bad as Dalinar because he is a villain pretending to be a Hero
In most of the Epic high fantasies I read, it is "good vs evil" or "quest to a noble cause" or "rebellion against the oppression" or "Hero journey".....not in Roshar
So far, this is the storyline of selfish people navigating through life towards their selfish goals.
There are no Heroes here cause simply "Honor is dead". No one is a savior
AND I AM LOVING THIS
and if you don't believe me, just ponder the idea that "each of the radiants got their shardblades by killing someone" which I honeslty found a chef's kiss,
Every character is suffering from either a mental or physical disorder; something I found extremely interesting and well presented. I could write a whole essay research on this, but I am sure someone already did.
There is also a lot of religious influence here, which I did not like, but hey, it had to be done I suppose!
my curiosity, however, is in the fact that "Everyone is bad one way or another and non more monstrous than Dalinar."
My review is going to center around him cause this book is mostly "Dalinar's book"

Anyway, back to Dalinar...I didnt like him from the start. something felt off about him. And the first few chapters of Oathbringer proved that he is evil.
So Dalinar is this genocidal bloodthirsty in his youth but I have to like him in his middle age cause he "regrets" it with no repricaution and not only that, he is rewarded for his murders with several shardblades, a son with a shardblade, a son as a radiant, a daughter in law who is a radiant and a bodyguard radiant, and not one but two women who loved him! one of them is his dead genocidal brother's wife!!!!!! yeah no!
In fantasy, wars are usually fought to defend, to fight evil, to protect, to retrieve stolen property
This war, Gavilar's war, is conquering and oppressing. They weren't trying to unite for the sake of unity! Gavilar wanted to be a dictator. He announced himself king and fought to death and destruction anyone who opposed him
and Daliner fed his sickness
he killed, peledgered, enslaved, and rape ( was implyed), all while getting high on his killing spree and calling it Thrill.
but now, in his middle age, I am supposed to trust him!!! fuck that
Sadeas and Gavilar are monsters, and they died. I hope Dalinar dies, too
But hold on! Dalinar's redemption for being a bloodmonger child killer is becoming a king! waw! can this world be any more corrupt!!! i am loving this
"White on Black" is one of my favorite quotes in this book
I like this cause this is what Dalinar is trying to do

But when you do that, you end up with grey
that is, if you are using white in the first place
he is using grey
I do not think you and I are destined for such a glorious place. Men of blood and sorrow don’t get an ending like that, Dalinar Kholin.”

You stand where you do because of a brutal determination to do what had to be done. It is because of that trail of corpses that you have the luxury to uphold some lofty, nebulous code. Well, it might make you feel better about your past, but morality is not a thing you can simply doff to put on the helm of battle, then put back on when you’re done with the slaughter.”
Agreeeeee....give it to the hypocrite Dalinar
The only way I see Dalinar slightly redeeming himself is if he sacrifices his life.
I think I am in the minority for liking Moash. He has reasons for his action. He reached the conclusion that everyone failed to see.
As much as I liked Jasnah in the previous books, I am disliking her in this one. She is a self-centered, arrogant bitch.
Shalan's storyline felt like a filler her. why is she detective Konan all of a sudden???
And I said it before and I'll say it again: The books is damn too long
Imagine you are in a car and the driver reached a roundabout, but instead of taking the exit, they kept going round and round because they liked the view.

Side note on using the word "ok/okay" in high fantasy
I know that the book is written in the English language, but the word "ok" is a pure American invention in the mid-1800s
when I read it in Epic fantasy, I am immediately taken out of the story and start thinking of Yankees and Americans from the valley.
Just listen to the piece of nature incarnate, okay? I think Father wants to apologize, in his own way.”
Now why did you have to break the illusion of fantasy with "okay"!!!!
you replace "doctor" with healer
"brain" with inner thoughts
but fail to use "fine" or "right" or "got it" for "okay"?????

AMAZING!!! This is at least just as good as the previous ones in the series. I really don't have words to express how much I enjoyed this book. The characters evolve very nicely. The worldbuilding is just epic. The story line gets better and better and deeper as we go along. Since Iam reading the polish version which is cut into two parts iam only half way through and the second one is getting published in freakin april:(
Anyway truly epic 5 stars for Oathbringer. I can say so far that this is the best fantasy series ive read in my life:D:D

Eine grandiose Reihe, aber für mich der bisher schwächste Band. Ich habe extrem lange für dieses Buch gebraucht, dabei bin ich bisher nur so durch die Reihe gerauscht. In diesem Band sind für meinen Geschmack dann doch zu viele Längen und zu viele Details.
Auf der anderen Seite wurden einige Fragen beantwortet und neue spannende Stränge beschrieben.

I was so excited while starting this because the POV for this book is from my favourite character in the series. I thought I'd have a blast.
Unfortunately, this book was so tough to get through. The pacing of the book was poorer than the other books in the series.
Although, i did enjoy the story, the pacing really killed it for me.
The last section of the book did pull through though. That was fun to read!
But, I'll be on pause reading BS books for a while. :/

Habe mich schweren Herzens dazu entschieden, die Reihe abzubrechen. Die Bücher zuvor haben mir sehr gut bis gut gefallen und ich war sehr froh, endlich eine epische Fantasyreihe gefunden zu haben, die mich für längere Zeit in ihren Bann ziehen kann.
Leider ist der Schreibstil in diesem Teil der Reihe für mich persönlich nicht ertragbar. Auf den mehr als 500 Seiten, die ich gelesen habe, geschieht nahezu nichts und wenn doch, dann werden häufig Zwischenkapitel eingesetzt, bevor es am spannenden Ende wieder weitergeht. Das ist insgesamt sehr frustrierend.
Ich weiß, dass diese Reihe für andere Leser ebenfalls ihre Längen hatte. Aber ehrlich gesagt möchte ich mich dann nicht durch ein Buch "quälen" müssen, auch wenn ich die zugrunde liegende Geschichte eigentlich toll finde. Das scheint auch besonders einige Folgebände zu treffen.
Aus diesem Grund breche ich die Geschichte nun ab, denn gerade in den letzten Wochen musste ich das Buch immer wieder pausieren und darauf achten, dass es mich nicht in eine Leseflaute stößt.
Es ist wirklich sehr schade und ich freue mich für alle, die hier resistenter sind/waren als ich.

review of Oathbringer (Part 1) - the first half of Book 3 in The Stormlight Archive.
I shall start by saying that storms - was it good to be back on Roshar!
I finished Edgedancer almost a year ago now, so I needed a bit of a refresher going into this. It helped that one of my best friends has already read it and could remind me of what was going on at the end of WoR and what would be relevant going into Oathbringer.
I shall get this out the way now, because I know I'm not the only one who felt this way, but at this stage I am finding it very easy to get confused between the factions at play.
These are the factions I know of thus far, although I've probably missed some:
+ Heralds
+ Radiants (each with a different type of Spren)
- - Windrunners + Squires
- - Edgedancers
- - Bondsmiths
- - Skybreakers
- - Dustbringers
- - Truthwatchers
- - Lightweavers
- - Elsecallers
+ Ghostbloods
+ Truthless
+ Fuzed
+ Sons Of Honor
+ Diagram
This isn't even taking into account the different cities, kingdoms, species and cultures and all of their respective characters.
So yeah... It's easy to get a tad jumbled. Plus half of these are still complete mysteries to me at this point. But that isn't to say that it detracts from the story.
The confusion and my personal drive to understand and learn about these factions, and the people that belong to each, is a HUGE draw for me.
I adore the mystery and the realistic intertwining and ever evolving motives of each group.
Again, I shan't discuss the story so as to avoid spoilers, but I shall say that Dalinar has been my favourite since TWoK, and finally getting to see his flashbacks and getting to spend more time with him and the Kholin family is just superb.
His continuing visions play a huge role in Oathbringer and we learn a LOT from them! From the history of Roshar and the Desolation, to the Heralds and the Shards; Honor, Cultivation and Odium, and loads more!
There is a lot to process within these visions!
Also, Lift becoming further integrated within the central plot is brilliance itself. Her first appearance in this volume had me laughing at the sheer absurdity and confusion of the situation. I loved it.
Shallan is busy developing her abilities and learning lots. She spends a large chunk of this first half trying to solve a very unusual string of murders. It kept me guessing throughout and I thought it was great to see Shallan have something to really apply herself to. Her character continues to grow on me.
Kaladin, yet again, takes a bit of a backseat, with only a few chapters from his point of view. But this is 100% worth it for the addition of a few chapters from select members of Bridge Four. We learn a lot more about Teft, Rock, Skar and even Moash.
This really helped reinforce that sense of brotherhood that was formed during TWoK.
As always, the Interludes are fascinating and intriguing, giving us small glimpses of the world outside of the main story's arc and no doubt dropping some big hints and forshadowing for some upcoming events and POVs.
It's all very exciting.
Prior to reading this third book, I'd heard that this was the weakest of the series so far. From just this first half I can say that I completely disagree.
I found this entry to be thrilling, engaging, mysterious and we were given a lot of answers and information!
And, aside Wit and Szeth, we saw all of our favourite characters doing interesting things and their knowledge and abilities continue to grow at a fantastic pace.
Sanderson is the boss. Roll on Part 2 soon!

I'm to make sure you don't accidentally mate, as mating is forbidden by human society until you have first performed appropriate rituals! Yes, yes. Mmmmm. Dictates of custom require following certain patterns before you copulate. I've been studying this!'
'Oh, Stormfather,' Shallan said, covering her eyes with her freehand. A few shamespren even peeked in for a glimpse before vanishing. Twice in one week.
'Very well, you two,' Pattern said. 'No mating. NO MATING.' He hummed to himself, as if pleased, then sank down onto a plate.
'Well, that was humiliating,' Shallan said. 'Can we maybe talk about those books you brought? Or ancient Vorin theology, or strategies for counting grains of sand? Anything other than what just happened? Please?' "
So I didn't dislike this book, but, overall I thought that this wasn't the strongest book (or part) within The Stormlight Archive. I just wanted more action or discovery but instead, the book mostly focuses on Shallan doing, in my opinion, unimportant things. On a side note, I hope this is the last book that has Shallan having an identity crisis. It's getting very old and annoying to constantly read about it in every book thus far. I think her powers are very unique and interesting, I just wish we can focus more on growing her abilities instead of not solving her personal issues.

Rzadko mi się to zdarza, ale tym razem gwiazdka w dół za koszmarne wydanie, przecięcie książki na pół i niechlujną korektę. Sporo literówek i więcej niż zwykle stylistycznych niezręczności. Po tym wydawnictwie spodziewałam się czegoś więcej.

4.5 Ce n'est que la moitié du pav.. livre ^^ donc mon avis n'est pas complet, mais encore une fois, une excellente lecture, peut être qu'il manquait un tout petit peu d'action par moment (et je ne sais pas trop quoi penser de l’évolution de Shallan) mais quel plaisir de suivre a nouveau le Pont 4 et de découvrir Dalinar sous un "nouveau" jour! Hâte de lire la suite <3

Oathbringer has taken a slower pace than the previous two books. That being said it's still great. It's building up the world, history and characters and is deepening the rift between the two sides.
There's been some intriguing revelations and further development into the Knights Raidants and their powers, which I found particularly engaging.
I'm also glad we get to delve into Dalinar's backstory this time, as he's a much more developed, interesting character than I first thought. I always liked him and was interested in his previous reputation, but seeing it first hand is something solid.
Again, this is half a book so I will go into full detail at the end of Part Two.
