From USA Today Bestselling Author RS McCoy

A Powerful Tiger. A Moody Bear. An Impossible Choice. Perfect for fans of Cinder , The Star-Touched Queen , and The Bear and the Nightingale .

*A Paranormal Romance reimagining of Goldilocks and the Three Bears *

A golden-haired beauty with a tiger totem, Raene Randal is powerless to stop the dissolution of her life. Her uncle and best friend, Kaide, is sending her away for good. While Raene knows his actions are fueled by the sudden and unexplained loss of his bride, Blossom, that doesn’t change the fact that her future is certain. As the niece of a Pyro politician, it’s Raene’s duty to cross the realm and fulfill her marriage arrangements with an Alderwood Bear Clan.

The rest of her life is mapped out, but Raene has one choice to choose a husband from the sons of the Bear Clan’s leader—too bad she’s not interested in any of them. She knows her duty, but so far from her home and everyone she knows, Raene finds keeping her promises harder than she ever thought.

On the far side of the realm, Blossom knows nothing of Kaide’s implosion or Raene’s departure. She’s trapped in the Aero city at the whim of Syndicate Mercer. As much as she tries to adapt to her aerial totem and her new role within the Aero branch, Blossom knows it’s only a matter of time before she sees Kaide again, but this time, she’ll be his enemy.

She was sent away from her people and her life as part of a political arrangement. Raene has been traded to marry one of the Alderwood Bear Clan leader’s sons, never to be able to run free as her tiger, again. Feeling betrayed by her uncle, Raene is isolated, alone and feels as much fear as anger for not being allowed to live her own life. Is she being punished for the loss of her uncle’s mate? Three sons, each different, each handsome, each in need of a mate, but only one can win her hand, if not her heart and time is running out for her to choose. How can she choose a man she doesn’t love? Why must her life be chained to a strange land and a group who will never understand her? Something is going on and Raene has nearly died, but now to be rushed into marriage ahead of schedule seems just cruel.

Blossom didn’t run away from Raene’s uncle, she was taken, forced to give up the man she loved and chained to the whims of the Syndicate Mercer, a twisted woman who finds joy in tormenting her subordinates. Not knowing her fate, Kaide is beside himself with grief and pain, why would she leave? Will they ever be together again? Will it be as enemies or lovers?

Two young women, each trapped in a world they cannot escape, neither knowing what has happened to each other, is there any happiness to be found? R.S. McCoy is back and this time, she has re-created the tale of Goldilocks and the Three Bears with an adult twist and romance. There is no porridge to test, but the political machinations of those in power, will be tested, as strong-willed characters try to change the odds to their favor in the game of life.

RAENE AND THE THREE BEARSby R.S. McCoy is a tale of duty, a test of internal strength and the desire to go home versus the desire for love. Ms. McCoy adds so much heart to her tales, the characters’ pain, anger and love feel real, are very intense and help build each scene as the characters share their hearts while belying them with their necessary actions. Once again, R.S. McCoy brings life, love and the paranormal together for another fabulous read!

I received this edition from R.S. McCoy in exchange for my honest review.

Raene and the Three Bears is another example of those astonishing books I just mentioned. This is the second installment of The Alder Tales series of RS McCoy. It is a retelling of Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

The book picked up right where Blossom and the Beast ended. I thought that this book would just be about Raene. I started to worry about the fate that had befallen on Blossom. This will tell you whatever happened to Blossom after the last time we left her in book one. This also spoke of the fulfillment of the agreement and the binding promise between Da and Vice Syndicate Kaide Landel. If book one seemed complicated enough, then this spun a whole new web of events and episodes that you would need to be in your right frame of mind to be able to catch up. I did not have time to analyze each incident as the next one came bounding out of nowhere, surprising me out of my wits. Very clever! I am already looking forward to the next book - Hale and Gemini. The characters were just so memorable I couldn't help but feel for each of the heroes and heroines. Might as well, because, in my review on Blossom and the Beast, I already claimed to be a member of the Bear clan. And rightly so, because my last name actually stands for bear in Spanish.

This book will make you start picking your favorites and get you annoyed. You will be asked to choose. You will be asked to take a side. It will ask you as to who are you rooting for? You will start to question if it was ever fair. And be careful, because you might get your heart broken.
I give this book all the rings in Raene's fingers. Gratefully, my heart is still intact. I was far from being heartbroken. I was satisfied and concurred with the turn of the events and how the story developed. I wouldn't have it any other way. I was so high from all the excitement that I could not think of any other course it should have gone. This book oozed with a shocking intensity that was hard to recover from. It took me about three days to write this review. I had to read light stories after this to manage the excitement. I didn't think I could take any more taxing adventures right after Raene and the Three Bears. I didn't want my heart and my brain to explode from too much involvement and invested feelings. I had to calm myself down before I take on any other complicated stories to process. So, you have been warned - this is intense.

How dark did a person become when they relished the misery of others?

Thank you again, RS McCoy for the ARC.

Raene and the Three Bears is the second book in The Alder Tales by R.S. McCoy, and is a fantastic addition to the series. Whilst being a complete story (for Raene), you also hear how Blossom and Kaide are getting on, so I would say that you HAVE to read book 1 first. The only question I have is why wouldn't you?!

As part of the agreement for Blossom to go with Kaide, Raene has to go to the Bear Clan. However, Kaide made sure that the choice of her husband would be Raene's. Out of the three brothers, one is already married, but Raene still has the choice, as explained by Da.

O.M.G!!! Seriously, every book by R.S. McCoy should come with a kindle warning as I don't think my kindle will survive! This is the second time I've been absolutely entranced in this series, devouring every word, every page; completely engrossed and invested in the story.

I won't give out any spoilers, and I won't even mention the hints about who the 'stars' of the next book and what I think their story might be. All I will say, is that this book is exceptionally well written, with a clear and concise political structure (as far as anything political can be). The world building as a whole, with the different ways of living for each 'branch', is amazing. The characters continue to keep me on the edge of my seat, as they grow and become more than expected.

I really can't recommend this book, or the series, highly enough. Simply stunning, and I can't wait to continue with this series.

* A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book, and my comments here are my honest opinion. *

This did not disappoint! So many cliffhangers and now I have to wait very impatiently for the next book. Again another whirlwind romance, but I was expecting it this time after Blossom.

This book was INTENSE. It was unexpectedly difficult to put down. I gave up sleep and food for this book.

There’s a lot to like, and some to dislike. I guess the main issues are the heartbreaking ending, and some of the character’s actions. I mean, Blossom goes missing, and despite the fact that she was about to be happily married, everyone thinks she ran away of her own free will? No one suspects foul play? Kaide said himself that they might try to change her totem, which they did, and he doesn’t even consider that that’s what actually happened? Talk about frustrating! And when he finally sees her, oh yeah definitely be angry at her because she totally betrayed you to become an Aero. Hell, she probably even told them to change her totem. That makes a whole lot of sense. No one seems to be thinking straight. And no one properly communicates about the issue. Raene gets to the clan and the first thing Tasia tells her is that if anything happened to Blossom, don’t tell anyone. Obviously Tasia does not care about Blossom. She only doesn’t want to see a few bears throw a fit. Never mind the fact that they might actually be able to help. But—oh that’s right, there would be nothing to help with because Blossom ran away of her own free will. It wouldn’t be much use to…I don’t know, actually try to figure out what happened to her, whether of her own free will or not. No one seems to want to find her and get a proper explanation, but they are all torn up about her leaving. It just seems pretty selfish on everyone’s part. And even when one of Blossom’s brothers actually finds out that she’s missing, it’s not even about Blossom at all, despite the fact that they all idolize her. Everything is always about Raene. And while I can understand that in the context of the conversation, they don’t ever revisit the Blossom issue. Oh, my sister’s missing? Cool, now that we’ve ruled out these possibilities it must be something else that I can’t help, so better just give up. Oh I can be mad about it, but won’t actually do anything. Won’t try to figure out what that something else is. And then I shall promptly forget about the issue for the entire rest of the book.

And then the ending—truly the perfect ending for a book that has a sequel. I.e. frustrating and inconclusive. One good thing happens—despite the fact that it makes absolutely no logical sense, but is clearly the best option—and then two more awful things happen. Oh, and that good thing has one benefit but many other drawbacks. Suffice it to say that I will be eager for the next book so we can finally get these issues squared away once and for all.

I spent most of the book eagerly devouring Raene’s story, but once that came to a sort of climax I realized that Blossom wasn’t getting the attention she deserved, even though her story wasn’t as fun to read about. It was mostly pretty depressing and not much big happened. But I would have liked it to move along a little faster, maybe. Maybe the problem was that she was away from Kaide for most of the book. Which was the point, I know, but in an entire book maybe it could have gone a little faster—maybe they’d see each other again by halfway, and then some time could be spent trying to communicate properly—oh, communication is clearly difficult in most books, otherwise conflict would be severely diminished—and then once they reassured each other of what was actually going on, maybe they could work to find a solution. They wouldn’t have to reach it by the end of the book, but that’s an awful lot of work that’s going to have to be done in the next one. Very little was done in this one. And oh how much fun it will be when Blossom learns that one of her brothers has married Raene and the other bachelor will probably never forgive him. Never mind what happened to her father. (Never mind what happened to Raene’s father—she still doesn’t know about that. It seems to me that these characters go through much of their lives not knowing incredibly important things, and most of the conflict stems from trying to figure these things out or coping when they finally learn them.) Life is just one nasty surprise after the next.

Wow, what a lot of negativity, all for a book that is actually quite good…I liked Blossom and Raene both, although they were a little hard to tell apart at times. They were definitely not perfect and had some frustrating moments but ultimately they were just who they were. And it was great that we got so many different perspectives. Not too many to be overwhelming, but enough to get the important people’s perspectives which really helped my understanding, even if the communication between the characters themselves was terrible. Parson and Hale (the suitors that Raene must choose between) are both fine, but again frustrate me in different ways. Hale is steady and the perfect husband in most ways but the few problems he has are about things that are central to Raene’s character and that would be a dealbreaker for me. Parson is a chaotic mess who embraces those parts of Raene but almost seems to see her only as her totem. Which gets a little weird. And he can’t communicate at all, haha. But he has passion enough for both of them. I think it’s funny that he transformed and ran off when he first saw her in a fit of emotion, and when she does that only pages later, I thought “they’re perfect for each other.” But isn’t there that saying that opposites attract? Having two such volatile people be married would probably cause a lot of chaos. But hell, if Hale won’t even feed her meat…Anyway, I guess she eventually chose right, even if it felt wrong at the time. I mean, nothing would have felt right, but she did not do a good job explaining her choice. (Big surprise; communication issue.) Anyway, of course it’s going to be messy. Life’s not supposed to be easy.

As for Blossom’s reluctant new life, it was basically as expected. Forced to do terrible things and not even allowed to enjoy her (altered) totem. At least she makes new friends. Although I’m not sure how she’ll get out of it. Eh, it’ll work out.

All in all this was quite a page-turner. Always something big going on. That’s why it was so difficult to find a stopping place. Good story. Wish I had the next one already. I don’t need sleep, I need answers!

And for those curious, I am definitely…
Team Parson.

This follows the story from book one, so I just assume everyone has read that book for what I write and I do not consider it as spoilers.

Sadly, after the ending of book 1, I was still too invested in Blossom and Kaide - which we did not get enough of in this book (in my opinion). All I wanted was for them to work things out and I kept being pushed into Raenes story.

I did like Raenes story as well - which is why the still good rating - but especially at the beginning I just wanted to push her out of the way and know what's happening with Blossom and Kaide. I frustrated me more than it should - probably - or maybe that was intentional.

I mentioned in my review of book 1 that I think people were making idiotic choices, I am happy to say: that has pretty much stopped in this book (yay!). The bad choices made here, are related to character flaws, emotions, hormones, transformation.. but not stupidity (whoop whoop).

I also have fairy tale vibes from this book, I think the whole totem-idea is putting it into the fairy tale area in my head. Although, oddly, Aereo with their birds not as much as the Terra people in the woods.

Whatever, I am ranting again. All in all another great book, but I need more Blossom and Kaide in my life. High hopes for book 3.

** edit:
Oh sh*t I just saw it's a retelling of Goldilocks and the 3 bears (yes - I am that slow!). Same as with the first book, I see the signs but I don't actually get the retellings vibe from it.

OMG I Can't say enough about this book. Here is the struggle of Raene as she is given away to a foreign land to become the bride to one of the sons of the leader of a new clan, all three who happen to be, yes bears to her tiger. There she learns it is the same group that her friend Blossom came from (I do suggest you read book one Blossom and the Beast first to fully understand the story line here as it runs throughout this one-no spoilers here sorry). I love RS McCoy's writing style of switching between not only the different story lines but the different characters thought patterns as well. You never had any doubt what was going on and who was involved at any time even though there were two story going at the same time. This book left me crying, screaming, shaking my head, broken hearted and filled with hope all at the same time. I would put this book in the fantasy area as it deals with shape shifting and some mild violence. I will be on pins and needles waiting for the next book to come out as this one kept me up all night turning the pages to find out what happen next.

I absolutely tore through this book and the other four in the series in a matter of days. R.S. McCoy has a gift for writing bewitching characters and forbidden romance. Raene is a complex character, torn between her posh human life and the beast within her totem. I enjoyed her story immensely.

Absolutely loved it! I love alternating points of view so, it was great to not only have that for Raene's story, but to also weave in Blossom and Kaide's stories as well. There is a great love triangle in this story and I am so happy with who Raene chose. If you are on team "other guy", let me know so we can dish it out. I feel like everyone is on team "who Raene chose" though. Only one of the two main storylines gets solved in this book, and it is killing me. I cannot wait for book three to come out! If you haven't started this series, you seriously must!

I received and ARC from the author but the opinions expressed are my own.

"Raene and the Three Bears" is loosely a "Goldie Locks and The Three Bears" retelling and it picks up right where "Blossom and the Beast" left off.

This book has a few more points of view than "Blossom and the Beast" as it shifts between telling Raene's story, Blossom's story, and we even get a couple of chapters keeping us on Kaide.

In summary, Raene, a Pyro Princess, with the enormously powerful totem of a tiger (ability to change into a tiger at will) has spent her whole life preparing for the day she would be traded to one of the elite Pyro clans in marriage to help further Kaide's ambitions. She's spent her life being trained how to eat, speak, dance and move perfectly, all so that she would make an ideal match.

But Kaide hasn't traded her to one of the elite pyro clans for marriage, he's traded her to the back woods Terra bear clan. They don't have houses, never mind opulent manors, they don't have electronics, they don't even have running water and Raene is going to have to spend the rest of her life living in a tent on the ground five inches away from the dirt.

To make matters worse Kaide didn't even choose her husband, he's done the unthinkable and made a contract that makes her decided which of the Frane brothers she want's to marry. Does she want sweet, thoughtful Hale, who is steady as a rock and careful about seeing to her every need but is constantly urging her to be more Terra, or does she want Parson, who take her hunting and is full of passion but is also unpredictable, grouchy, and always sticking his foot in his mouth?

My biggest hang up in this book is not the story telling or the characters (both of those were really well done) it's the political set up. The whole premise of this story is based on people who can shift into animals after they get a scientific injection, but I can't quite wrap my mind around how that came to be. It seems like it gets a lot of people in trouble, makes a lot of people dangerous and the benefits to both the person and society are pretty limited. I'm really hoping in the next book R.S. McCoy pulls of bit of what Veronica Roth did in the Divergent series where she pulls back a bit and tells us how this society was set up in the first place.

With that said I thought this book was really well done. I wish there could have been more of Blossom's story woven into it because I felt like there was a lot going on in her situation, but every glimpse we did get of her was both interesting and horrifying and left me dying for more. I also feel like Blossom has become so much more reasonable, picking her battles and fighting for the things that are really important.

I thought the set up with Raene and the bears was fantastic. I loved reading about her romances and I thought she made total sense as she tried to fit into her new setting and balance the affections (or lack there of) of the men she was supposed to be vetting for marriage. She was totally relatable, the set up was great and there were plenty of steamy kisses without getting too graphic, I would say totally YA appropriate.

I was kind of luke warm on "Blossom and the Beast" but I really liked "Raene and the Three Bears" and I'm looking forward to reading the next in the series.

I need to take a moment and thank the author for graciously sending me a physical copy of this paperback treasure to enjoy and review! In the midst of the moving turmoil, I found immense solace and adventure in R. S. McCoy’s second Alder Tales book, “Raene and the Three Bears!” Oh my goodness! Oh my goodness! Please feel free to read on for my best attempt at a no spoilers review! (But maybe if you haven’t read Blossom and the Beast, hold off on reading this review, and please read Blossom and the Beast first. It is absolutely worth your time and money)

I loved this book so much. It ripped me out of a reading slump after the move to Texas. I remember being enamored with Blossom and the Beast, so I knew it would be no surprise that I would fall in love with this story just the same.

McCoy has solid world building skills, but without overdoing all the details. I love the diversity of the element-based clans, and how each of them have a very distinct culture and values that resonate so well within the main characters.

The story continues following Blossom from the heart-wrenching cliffhanger that the first Alder Tales book left us with. Blossom faces many challenges in surviving her new placement and assignment as an Aero Vice Syndicate. She seems a bit defeated, but she surrenders to a heartfelt cause of hoping to see Kaide again. However, she does offer defiance where she think that she can, and holds on to hope that she will be reunited with Kaide.

We also get a few scenes of an up and coming villain, Syndicate Mercer! Ooh, she is a baddie for sure! I dislike her obviously, but love her as a villain. I hope that maybe we get a bit of a backstory chapter on her eventually. I love villain backstories!

The tale also follows Raene’s journey to choose one of the three bear clan brothers as her husband. No pressure. I usually find love triangles annoying, but this was a love triangle forced on Raene, who didn’t seem fond of love triangles either. Raene is a great character and I love her tiger totem. I personally couldn’t choose between the brothers. It was so hard! They all had their quirks and great personalities. In the end, I’m super glad that she chose who she did. You’re going to have to read this to find out who she chose. I won’t tell!

One of my favorite things about this author is that she is the MASTER (or mistress, whatever you please) of cliffhangers. I thought that my heart was wrenched out in suspense at the end of Blossom and the Beast, now I’m in agonizing suspense! What is going to happen!? What is going on?! My heart! The feels! Oh my gosh! I need the next book right meow!

Final verdict: 5 stars! I highly recommend this book! …unless you’re a reader that doesn’t like feeling all the feels… read it anyway!

Raene and the Three Bears is book two in The Alder Tales, stories set in a post-war future where mankind has branched off into groups closely related to their animal totems. Eighteen-year-old Raene’s life has just been uprooted. Not only has her new friend disappeared, but her beloved uncle has effectively banished her to the Alderwood to marry one of Blossom’s three bear-totem brothers.

As usual, I’m blown away. I guessed the outcome early on, but then second and third guessed it. The brothers don’t make Raene’s decision easy, and even in the last moment, I wasn’t entirely sure who she would pick. The relationship building in this love triangle is some of the best I’ve seen in a book. There were good and bad things with both suiters. Anyway, I loved it.

I was also glad that Blossom doesn’t just fade into the background. I was invested in her story in Blossom and the Beast and really hoped this book would reveal what happens to her. It does, and it’s gritty. I have no idea how she and Kaide are going to make it work, but I’m totally looking forward to the next book to find out if they do (ok, actually, I prefer to think ‘how’ over ‘if’).

Beyond that, I think I saw a glimmer of foreshadowing. Not certain, but there seems to be someone who just may be the heroine of the next story. I’m not going to say whom. Anyway, it’s piqued my curiosity.

Although the description mentions this is a version of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, I’d say that it stops at the hair and bear totems and is truly its own, original story.

Overall, I loved this story. It’s a rather clean read, but a very emotionally gripping and engaging romance.

I received an ARC of this book from the author and wrote this review for the blog at PureTexuality.com.

Boy, what can I say about this one besides that it's an awesome follow up to the first book?? Because it is! And it leaves you wanting more, so much more. I mean, I have so many questions that I won't reveal so I don't spoil things. Raene is a really awesome Pyro chick who gets her tiger totem, but has trouble handling the volatile animal within from the very beginning. She hurts someone she cares deeply about in the process. Then suddenly her uncle, Kaide, is sending her away to the Alderwood to Blossom's family to choose a husband among the Frane sons who are bears. Each very different in their own right, of the three, only two are available and they are as different as night and day. One has it in his head that she's meant for him and the other thinks he's no good for her and pushes her away. The choice seems simple taken at face value, but it's really not and no one is as they seem in this book. Especially on Blossom's end as she attempts to adjust to the hard life in Aero. I'm already excited about what's coming next!

I first got to thank you to RS. McCoy for giving an advance review copy (ARC). It was one of the best books I've read in awhile it has a little bit of everything; Action, love triangle, lost love, found love and lost it again and with love there is drama.

With Blossom missing the beast, Kaide has gone on a rampage and then sends Raene away for transformation then on to alder wood to honor his trade with the Bear clan.
Raene is now an Aero Vice Syndicate still trying to sort out her situation with the assistance of a man who betrayed her at her transformation. She's still trying to find a way to let Kaide know that she's ok and that she is still with him. She begins trusting her advisor and letting him guide her some.
Anyway, this is a great read even with the drama and romance I very much enjoyed this book. It has a great combination of everything that makes for a great story you can get lost in.

After finishing the 1st book, i cant waiting to read the 2nd one. Raene and the Three Bears was a retelling story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. I love the story of Raene on the bear clan and i love her character's development. The most loved of this book for me was the triangle love in the story hahhaa and in the end Raene need to choose between the Frane brothers. This book was well-written and so beautiful i must say. I cant wait to know what happens in the next book :)

AMAZING! I loved this book, this story had me on the edge of my seat. My heart hurts for Blossom and Kaide, I need to know if they get a HEA. As for Raene and the Frane brothers and their clan, I loved getting to know them and seeing their story. I can't wait for book 3 in the Alder Tales.
