Deep in the woods, Two mice make a terrible discovery and rush home to stop their elders from making a mistake that could lead to the destruction of the entire colony. But a ruthless gang of traitors, fed up with the elders’ dithering, plot to take control and force the desperate colony to move to the city, where they are convinced that riches beyond imagining await.
But the city is dead, as well as anyone foolish enough to venture near it.
Meanwhile, ravenous wolves stalk through mud and debris in search of helpless prey left exposed by recent flooding. A small band of surviving wild mice, washed out of their homes by the raging waters, huddle in an abandoned building, hoping they aren’t discovered by predators.
Behind the scenes, a strange trio of witches study the vines and listen to the winds, hoping to divine the future and rid the land of a deadly curse that was caused by forces even they can’t understand. They know the little mice have a big role to play, but can the witches’ prophecies be trusted?
Great conclusion to the main story! There were a few parts that I felt could have used slower pacing, especially toward the end, but overall I really liked it. The artwork was fantastic, and I loved seeing these massive creatures like moose and bears from the perspective of tiny little mice.
Well, can I say "this is the end" (I'm pretty sure you Adele's song popped in your head). No, might be the last tome for now, but surely, more is to come! The pace isn't as fast as in the previous book, but still, it's nice to... oops, I almost spoiled the whole thing!
Ending the main story of Scurry (I don't believe any other stories were added later on regardless of the message "more to come....") we see Wix and Pict continuing their journey which leads us to the truth about why the world has become how it has (no humans) and the truth of what happened to the guardian named Empress after the great cataclysm. With the city being a place where death rules it is fortunate (really lucky really) that a source of food could be found conveniently much closer by as the pair return home to discover Resher's vile acts that will lead to changes in everyone's lives.
This is another fine instalment with gloriously drawn creatures that easily show emotions and deal not only with problems such as dangerous animals but also things such as betrayal, murder, and how to adapt to survive. I found the ending was satisfying and as the fallout of human folly begins to fade I can imagine the circle of life will start picking off some of the extra mice before they grow to big and consume all the food they have now.
The final installment of Scurry brought the story to a satisfying close. Not a happy one, per se, but a hopeful one.
Through prophecy and destruction Wix and Pict strive to protect their colony. They return to the house amongst dissent and eventual destruction. Fleeing from the ruins of their haven they move towards a new place of safety.
But the wheels of destiny keep turning and the witches (I love the witches) make sure that Wix and Pict are in the right place at the right time. With the help of Atlas (another favourite) and the Empress a promising ending is reached.
I also HAVE to say that the explanation of the nuclear apocalypse was arresting. The description coloured by the animal's understanding of the world was beautifully highlighted through Smith's imagery. It was an interesting and fitting personification of a nuclear bomb.
besides killer art and a good story, this is very interesting conceptually. From the characters (mice) perspective they are experiencing a mythologized apocalypse (in the biblical sense even) of the world, but for the audience, who is familiar with the Cold War zeitgeist, this is just a Nuclear Winter scenario, just told from a non-anthropomorphic pov. So this means that depending on the level of familiarity of either the characters or audience with the setting/world, the story can be read as dramatic irony (from anthropomorphic audience pov) and/or cosmic horror (from non-anthropomorphic character pov).
E dopo tanto tempo son riuscita a mettere insieme i tre volumi in modo da riuscire a leggerli uno dopo l'altro.
Closing out the story of Wix and Pict, "The Shadow's Curse" is another thrilling entry in the Scurry saga. It's fun, engaging, and exciting. While the story borrows heavily from films and TV, it remains engaging enough on its own to keep you enthralled. The artwork continues to mesmerize, and the story will lead you to flip through the pages at a rapid pace.
The story, the art, the entire thing was dripping with greatness. I finish the book faster than I would have liked because it was just that good. Can't wait for anything else to follow!!
The art is as good as it was the first two times while the writing is still a flat, saccharine mess without even a splinter of creativity or wit with every character and story-beat telegraphed from 10.000 miles away.
What a great conclusion to the story (so far) I’m glad that more ideas came to Max while finishing this because I can not say enough great things and am absolutely onboard for whatever comes next!
Fr tho, this is truly amazing! Mesmerizing! Each page, each panel, is so full of detail, painted with so much love, you could stare at it for hours! You could literally use each panel as a poster to hang in your room! I’m not kidding.
Apart from the art, the story is nice as well. Dark fantasy, post-apocalyptic. Humans are gone, animals turned mad or just hungry. Really well done, I was always in this post-apocalyptic feeling; the art of course underlined that, with the well used color grading and/or atmosphere.
The protagonist is a mouse, so there are lots of predators and our heroes can never rest. But there are friends as well. I loved the foxes the most, but it's hard to decide. The deer was cool too, I loved his chillness. All characters – on the good side – were nice, but even the ones on the bad side were well thought-through as well. Everyone felt very real. The perspective from the mice was super great. Probably as well through the art and the camera angles, but more times than not, I felt myself transformed into a mouse and left alone in this large forest. The wolves were pretty creepy, especially at the beginning (I read it at night the first chapter, and I seriously was too afraid to do anything because of the realism and creepiness of the wolves, and generally everything in this comic). Even the cats were creepier than they should be (as a human).
I really really loved that comic, read it in one day on tapas and i hope to buy the physical copies, if they are still available. I can't believe how few likes/comments there are on Tapas; that's criminally shocking and unbelievable. Go read it, now!
