After winning the Warrior Race, seventeen-year-old Jett must reevaluate who she trusts, save her friend Amika, and overcome an evil plot to turn her battalion into selfless warriors--all before the final UPLOAD. *********************************
Seventeen-year-old Jett devoted her childhood to preparing for the front lines. Now she faces two options: convert to a mindless Servile or emerge as a finalist in the Balvan Warrior race. But this year's contest is different. Before the starting horn, the stadium screen broadcasts a warning to resist, and an explosion tears through the Elders' section.
The competition becomes more unusual when Slade, one of her rivals, defies tradition and helps her become a warrior. Questioning her training and his intentions, she has no time to ask, because a rebel group attacks and scatters her battalion in different directions.
Left alone, she doesn't know who to resist or who to trust. The Balvans? The Rebels? Slade? Each has their own agenda and buried truths. She must win the battle within herself and discover her true enemy before she can save her fellow warriors from the final UPLOAD.
4.5 Stars. The only reason for the deduction is because Hicks' story is such a non-stop action packed story that I needed to force myself to put it down a few times in order to give my heart a moment to recover. If you like fast-paced dystopian, this book is for you.
Pros: The hint of a future romance is there, but it isn't the primary focus. The focus is on Jett needing to figure out herself outside of her lifetime of training to become a soldier. She's uncertain about many things most of us take for granted while growing up: forging friendships and building trust. She's a teenager and everything she's trained for has been taken away suddenly and she's trying to figure out how to deal with it.
Cons: The fast-paced action. The reader (me) isn't given a decent chance to breath before something else happens. Which in Jett's situation is understandable; these events in her life happened one after the other with barely a moment for her to recover. Another reader might be okay with it. As much as I wanted to read the book in one sitting - and I probably could have - I had to force myself to put it down so that I could breath again for a minute. However, I had to *force* myself to put the book down; I didn't want to even though I needed to.
Highly recommend if YA dystopian is your genre. It was well-written and almost un-put-downable for me. I can't wait for the sequel!
A teenaged girl named Jett is about to compete against her peers for the honor of becoming one of the Warriors, a coveted role of protector of her fellow Balvans.
Jett is not a favorite to win amongst her fellow trainees, but she has her speed and the determination to rise up in her pinnacle moment between being all she’s ever dreamed of becoming or living a life in servitude.
As she prepares herself for the imminent start of the competition, a word flashes on the big starting clock screen and an explosion rocks the stands. Does it break Jett’s focus? Will this halt the competition?
I really like the quick pace of this dystopian novel by author J Lynn Hicks. It hits the ground running as Jett’s world expands, old faces yield new relationships, and new conflicts reveal old secrets.
What a fantastic book! On the very first page, the reader is dropped into a stadium and witnesses events already unfolding. From there to the end of the book, readers will feel like they are experiencing everything and every emotion with the main character, Jett, and her comrades. The author keeps you on the edge of your seat, pulling for victories in external and internal conflicts. Put this on your to-read list, for sure!
Upload was my first experience with present tense story telling. It took some getting used to, but after that, I was into the immediacy the tense conveyed in the character's actions. The book was a lighting-fast thrill ride as the main character, Jett, struggled to cope with her new reality and save her friends. If you like dystopian works, check this one out.
