Heather
Heather and Kevin have been together since high school when she became pregnant with her first little girl as a teenager. Since then, she's gone on to have two more daughters. Kevin has been injured at work and due to financial difficulties, they are struggling to make ends meet. Unexpectedly, Heather finds out she's pregnant again and knows in her heart that they simply cannot keep the baby. How will they afford it? How will they continue on with barely making the rent and meeting their children's needs? With Kevin hung up on his injury and no one to really turn to, she decides that she has no choice but to give the baby up for adoption. As she searches through profile after profile, she comes across Grace, and deep down heather knows Grace is the person she wants to raise this baby.

Grace has devoted her entire life to her career. She's followed in her father's footsteps and became very wealthy because of it. Grace may have all the financial security she needs, but she doesn't have any family or friends. With her parent's gone, she's lonely and because of this she's decided she wants to adopt a baby. When the adoption agency contacts her to let her know that Heather would like to meet her, she's excited and scared. Heather's background makes everything more difficult and Grace can only hope that the adoption will run smoothly.
My thoughts on the story...
I had no idea what to expect when I requested this book, but after seeing a few reviews, I knew it would be emotional. The narrative alternates between Heather and Grace so you get both point's of view. I found it well executed and didn't find it predictable at any time with one unexpected event after another. The way Heather and Grace's relationship develops throughout the book was genuine and everything you would expect coming from both their positions. There were times when I wasn't happy with their decisions, but as a mother, I understood them and felt every emotion. Both women are strong characters and the author did such an amazing job taking the reader into their worlds. I literally couldn't put this book down until the end.
I was so moved by the incredible emotions and I found myself tearing up multiple times. I had to put it down more than once and truly think this is the most emotional book I've read in my entire life. That's really all that I can say. I can't wait to read more from Kate Hewitt.

Emotional Jam Packed Read!!
So, not my usual genre, but I could not resist the title nor the cover of this book. Frankly, I couldn’t resist the overall 4.5 star rating.
This is a very thought provoking read. It is also, for me, quite an original read. I did go in blind with my own preconceived notions, some which panned out, and others that did not.
I was immediately drawn to the characters and tried placing myself in their individual situations. You know the old saying that goes something like ... ‘put yourself in their shoes and walk a mile.’ I can tell you, each separate ‘mile I walked’ was completely unique. Each perspective vastly different from the others. I found myself asking ‘What would you do in their shoes?’
This is a story about two women, Heather and Grace, who have tough choices to make. Two women who couldn’t be more different. Their connection ...a baby. Heather is the biological mother, Grace the adoptive mother.
The dynamics of the relationships between each other and those closest to them, take you on an emotional roller coaster ride, along with some twists and turns that did surprise.
If you are a fan of women’s fiction, this is most likely going to please. I was definitely impressed with this author’s writing style and abilities!

This is a Woman's Fiction/Chick-Lit. Heather is pregnant and cannot afford another baby. Grace is all about her career, but after the death of her father she decides to contact adoption agency. This book show the ups and downs of Parenting/Adoption. I have to say this book went right to my heart. Heather and Grace is two strong well women that goes through so much during this book. I cannot put into words how much I loved this book, and the ending is so good. This book has heart breaks, drama, love, and so much more. This book is well-written, and it will stay with you long after you finish reading the book. I received an ARC of this book. This review is my own honest opinion about the book like all my reviews are.

5☆ A Powerfully Emotional Read!
Wow oh wow did A Mother's Goodbye tug at my heartstrings. It's a powerful and emotional read that touched my heart.
I am not going to talk about the plot as to be honest the blurb is enough to give you an insight into this mesmerising read.
One you really need to experience yourself.
The story is told in both mothers points of view. It really works as you get to see both sides to adoption and being a mother and having to make that agonising and heart breaking decision.
A Mother's Goodbye is not an easy read, but what Kate did was take a sensitive subject and handle it realistically and sensitively, but still creating the right amount of emotion. It's insightful and all too believable but it's a subject that is very real and I applaud her.
This vivid rich tale has absolutely stolen my heart.
It's a completely absorbing read that's beautifully written told with empathy and compassion, it was powerful and gut-wrenching a very moving read that gave me chills. I don't normally get tears but it really
does touch the heart and definitely pulls the reader in.
I highly recommend this mesmerising and powerfully emotional read. But I do recommend maybe have a tissue ready. I don't get that emotional but it got to me.
But children and animals always pull at my heart strings!
I do hope you pick up A Mother's Goodbye!

4.5 Heartbroken Stars 💔🌟🌟🌟🌟.5
Wow! This book pulled at my heartstrings from first page to last... A touching book about mothers love.... two mothers loving the same child.... One gave birth to him... and the other gives life to him.... both wanting the best for him....
Heather’s husband has lost his job, they have three young kids that they cannot afford to buy new shoes for, when Heather finds herself pregnant with baby number four....Grace has a successful professional life, but feels like something is missing from her personal life.... I am sure you can see where this is going, Heather chooses to have Grace adopt her baby.... as a mother I can only imagine how heartwrenching that would be, but so unselfish of Heather to want nothing but the best for her baby.... The adoption is open and Heather and family see the baby Isaac once a month.... when tragedy strikes it brings these two women together in quite a remarkable way....
Told from the points of view of both Heather and Grace.... I thought this was extremely affective, we really got a glimpse into the thoughts and feelings of both mothers.... I really found both these characters real and relatable, with all the real struggles of a mother.... I loved how their relationship strengthened and grew through tragedy and love... The ending to this was sad, sweet, and satisfying...
Absolutely recommend to those who enjoy a book about tough decisions and mothers love💕

This book was incredible! It sucked me in from page one with a compelling hook, a case of a birth mother torn over whether she could give up her child for adoption, an adoptive mother who had no one else in the world and desperately wanted a child to make her life whole. Heather, the birth mom, has three children already, and her husband was badly injured at work. There are no more worker’s comp payments coming, and they can’t afford food for the three kids they have. Author Kate Hewitt paints the bleakness of their everyday struggle with such skill that you ache for what millions of families go through all across the world. When Heather finds out she’s pregnant, she’s increasingly desperate, the only person in the house who can work, needing to take on more hours when her youngest child will finally be in school, and yet heartbroken over the idea of giving her child away to a stranger.
Grace, the adoptive mother, has recently gone through the loss of her father. She is a high-powered financial analyst in NYC, and has a luxurious lifestyle. But she’s all alone. The contrasts between Grace and Heather are striking. Both hold resentments against the other. Both are wonderfully real, and generous. I don’t want to spoil how things go further in the book because this is TWISTY and thrilling and I couldn’t stop turning pages. A Mother’s Goodbye by Kate Hewitt is an extremely emotional book with an excellent story.
A Mother’s Goodbye is a tear jerker. Every time I thought it couldn’t get more emotional, I was wrong. The story has so many great twists that I didn’t see coming. A Mother’s Goodbye covers many difficult topics including adoption and teen pregnancy. There are more difficult topics discussed, but I don’t want to ruin any surprises.
I highly recommend A Mother’s Goodbye to anyone that likes emotional books.

Stock up on tissues, chocolate and/or ice cream or whatever comfort food takes your fancy because believe me, you are going to need it!
When Heather discovers she’s pregnant, there are no tears of joy. With a husband off work and three other children to feed, life is hard enough as it is and the bills keep piling up. Heather decides to give her baby up for adoption and thinks single career woman Grace might just be perfect.
Grace is terribly lonely after the death of her father. Her job has always come first and now she realises she doesn’t really have anyone in her life. A baby seems the best option to fill that gap.
Another unlikely choice of book for me but this is the thing I like so much about blog tours. Stepping in to fill a gap and be surprised you’ve actually discovered something truly special. I had braced myself for a certain level of predictability but things didn’t at all turn out the way I expected them to.
A Mother’s Goodbye is quite a raw and incredibly emotional story. I didn’t always particularly agree with some of the decisions that were made or the attitudes of both Grace and Heather but you know, walk a mile in someone else’s shoes and all that. We never really know how we’ll react to certain situations until we find ourselves right in the middle of them.
I don’t want to say too much about the plot. The book description clearly tells you there is devastating news that will turn lives upside down, even more so than they already were. I’m not someone who cries easily but I often found myself desperately trying to fight back the tears and thought this book might just break me into tiny pieces.
This is an incredibly moving, powerful and heartbreaking story about motherhood, love and loss that will pull at your heartstrings. It left me tearful and in need of a massive hug and a stiff drink. Beautifully written and extremely evocative, I have a feeling this one will stay with me for a long time to come.

Oh my gosh! This book is sad, thrilling, gripping and completely pulls on your heart strings. You will laugh, gasp, cry and even get mad as you read this book. So many mixed emotions at different times while you read this book. This book draws you in at the first chapter and keeps you entertained and hooked the whole way to the end.
Full of heartache, tough decisions, dilemmas, drama and struggles of everyday life that most families go through at one point or another. This book, in two words, simply amazing!
This book follows the lives of Heather, her husband Kevin, and their 3 daughters – Emma, Amy and Lucy. Heather and Kevin began dating in highschool, only to find out shortly after they were pregnant. At the age of 17 Heather and Kevin get married, and a few months later their first born Emma was born. Life was hard, as they were a young couple trying to find their way in life. A few years later, Kevin is injured on the job at work, landing him on disability payments as he is unable to return to work due to back problems. Already with 3 children at home, and struggling to find enough money for their rent, bills and not to mention food and clothes, Heather finds out she is pregnant again with baby number 4! What are they going to do? They can’t afford things as it is, life at home is hard, they are getting eviction notices, and now they are expecting another child!?

When Heather discovers she is pregnant, she knows that she cannot keep the baby. Her husband has been out of work for years due to a back injury, they already have three girls, and their apartment is too small. Add to that their financial worries, and it becomes clear why they make the decision to give the baby up for adoption – to give it a better future than they feel they can offer. The decision doesn’t come easy. As a matter of fact, it is an agonizing one.
Grace can’t believe that Heather has chosen her to mother her child. There is no doubt the love Grace felt from the very start. She has the circumstances to make a wonderful life for the child and will do anything to prove that to Heather.
A Mother's Choice is a riveting story. It is indeed very touching. I thought the story was already pulling at my heartstrings, but then there was a twist, one so tragic, that I read much of the story with a lump in my throat.

Oh I loved this book. It wrecked me, taking me on an emotional, heart breaking journey. I loved it from start to finish. Absolutely beautiful, the writing so gorgeous and evocative, transporting you, making you feel the pain and the dilemma, the heart rending choices faced by the characters. A brilliant story, one that will stay with me for a long time. Very highly recommended to everyone.

Oh wow, I have literally been moved to tears with this book. It was such a beautiful, heartfelt and emotional story that seriously pulled at my heartstrings and brought tears to my eyes in a lot of places.
I loved how the story was told by the two main characters Heather and Grace, as it really gives the story depth and different viewpoints. You truly get a feel for both of the characters, seeing how they coped, the decisions they ultimately have to make and all of the experiences/events they have to go through and how their perspectives of each other changed because of certain things that happen in their lives.
The story was detailed and so very well written throughout, I even learnt a few things. The story was emotional and captivating in equal measures, completely drawing you in, making you want to turn those pages quickly to see how things would develop and what would happen next.
When I got to Part 2 of this story, I was already feeling pretty teary in places, didn’t think I could take another emotional hit but reading that first sentence of part 2 did just that. I have to be honest and say that I did struggle with some of it, given the subject matter, I wasn't expecting it to play a part in the story and so my emotions were a little raw and fragile at times. But having said that, the author did an absolutely exquisite job of writing it the way she did. That is all I’m saying on the matter though as wouldn’t want to spoil the story for anyone, you’ll just have to read it yourself.
As I’ve already said there were moments throughout the story that brought tears to my eyes, but it was at the very end when I really needed the tissues, there was tears of sadness and happiness.
I've always believed that if reading parts of a book brings tears to your eyes or makes you cry, then it is one of many signs of just how outstandingly breath taking a book is and how talented the author must be to cause that to happen.
This story has literally broken my heart into tiny little pieces at every emotional and heart breaking turn but come the very end it's quite safe to say that my heart shattered completely with all of the emotions that this story made me feel and yet despite that it was all so beautiful and heartfelt.
This was my first read by this author Kate Hewitt but it certainly won’t be my last. I’m looking forward to reading more by this highly talented author in the future.
I loved how the story was told by the two main characters Heather and Grace, as it really gives the story depth and different viewpoints. You truly get a feel for both of the characters, seeing how they coped, the decisions they ultimately have to make and all of the experiences/events they have to go through and how their perspectives of each other changed because of certain things that happen in their lives.
The story was detailed and so very well written throughout, I even learnt a few things. The story was emotional and captivating in equal measures, completely drawing you in, making you want to turn those pages quickly to see how things would develop and what would happen next.
When I got to Part 2 of this story, I was already feeling pretty teary in places, didn’t think I could take another emotional hit but reading that first sentence of part 2 did just that. I have to be honest and say that I did struggle with some of it, given the subject matter, I wasn't expecting it to play a part in the story and so my emotions were a little raw and fragile at times. But having said that, the author did an absolutely exquisite job of writing it the way she did. That is all I’m saying on the matter though as wouldn’t want to spoil the story for anyone, you’ll just have to read it yourself.

I was promised an emotional story and boy oh boy it was absolutely true. As soon as you open the book, the emotions jump out of it and grab you by the throat. I assure you they won’t let you go until the last word. So you are warned and you can brace yourself.
The book was unputdownable but I had take a breather now and then because it was so heavy.
It’s not easy to write a book and I think it’s even more difficult to be able to make your readers feel story and not only read it. This author certainly knows how to pull your heartstrings. Maybe I felt it more because I am a mom as well, but even if you are not I am sure you wish you had the box of tissues handy.
5 stars are not enough. I highly recommand it.

Powerful...Emotional...Heart-wrenching
A Mother's Goodbye is a story about one's woman decision to give up her baby for adoption and another woman's dream to be a single mother. The story is told in both mothers points of view. You truly feel their emotions and their journey. The writing is beautiful. It will pull at your heartstrings and bring you to tears. It was an easy read and keeps you invested throughout the book.
As an adoptive mother myself, I found this book to be relatable. I know all about the waiting for the phone call from the adoption agency, hoping for a birth mother to look at your profile and pick it from the pile of others. I have an open adoption so I stay in contact with the birth mom. For 4 years now, we have done visits around my son's birthday and at xmas.
I highly recommend reading this book.

This was so good. It was so predictable but that didn't change the fact that it made me cry. This book is about a woman named Heather who is pregnant with her 4th child. She can't afford her first 3 and her life is hard. Her husband is on disability and can't work, her kids don't listen, and it seems like she's trying to hold it all together but can't. She knows she can't care for a 4th baby, so she decides to give it up for adoption. She meets Grace, a high powered lawyer in the city (Heather lives in Jersey), who wants to adopt her kid. Grace takes care of Heather and her family while she's pregnant then the baby is unexpectedly born early. Grace continues to treat Heather well and does exactly what she asks, but the 2 never really become friends until something happens and Grace starts to need Heather. I read this physically over a long period of time but never forgot what was going on because it was so engaging. Like I said, super predictable but emotional nonetheless!
SPOILERS AHEAD:
Grace gets breast cancer and dies. She asks Heather to take her son back because Heather has always been unhealthily obsessed with the boy, but she knows thats not whats best. I loved seeing the friendship between the women and the maturation of Heather. I could relate to both women and thought this was a really good book!

Oh my word I think this book broke me. It’s been a while since I’ve cried so much at a book but I’m very glad I got the chance to read this one.
The story follows two women on both sides of the adoption journey. Rachel is a mum of three whose fallen on hard times and when she falls pregnant again she knows they can’t afford to keep the baby. Grace is a high flying career woman who desperately wants a child to stop the loneliness she feels after her father’s death. It was great to be able to follow both woman’s story and to have access to all their thoughts and feelings, it really added to the story. Both women feel so real and I felt like I went on a real journey with them over the course of the book. I really felt for both of them as their emotions throughout the book was almost palpable at times and I wished I could reach out to them to give them a hug.
The writing in the book is just exquisite! I think it takes quite a skilled writer to make a reader care so much about the characters and feel so involved in the book. The book is a fairly easy read and the plot is very gripping meaning it is quite difficult to put down. I wanted to read on to find out what happens, as I felt so involved, like the events were actually happening to me.
The ending was wonderful, bitter sweet but a good way to end the book. I was definitely sobbing by the end of it. I do tend to avoid books involving children as being a mum I find them quite difficult to read. This book was definitely a tear jearker and very emotional, which I struggled with at times but I pulled myself together to finish the book which I’m very glad I did. This book will stay with me for a long time.

Heather McCleary is faced with the hardest decision of her life when she finds herself pregnant with her fourth child. What I love most about A Mother’s Goodbye is that it tackles real life issues that many women face. On one end of the spectrum we have Heather. Daily life for Heather is a struggle There is never enough money to make ends meet, to put food on the table, or buy her children the basic necessities. I can see and sympathize with her internal struggle with giving up the baby she carries knowing she cannot provide for another child. She wants what is best for her unborn baby and relying on government assistance is not what she wants for her family. This is a struggle many parents face today. It is real and complicated and sometimes even messy.
Grace, on the other hand, has a good job and makes great money. But, when you think about it, money cannot buy happiness. Now that her father is gone, Grace realizes that she wasted the best years of her life to her career and the family that she so desperately craves is out of reach. Deciding to adopt is the best decision she has made for herself. When she is chosen by Heather to be the adopted mother of her baby, Grace’s life is starting to look up.
At times, I both loved and hated Heather and Grace. They can be petty and judgemental but you can see that their heart is in the right place. I can also understand the struggles they face and although sometimes they are unlikeable, I can understand why they do the things that they do. Heather and Grace may not always like each other, but they both struggle the same and have the same fears. They also share a bond that cannot easily be broken. I think they have also come to rely on each other in a lot of ways and you can see it in their thoughts and actions.
A Mother’s Goodbye is not an easy read by any means. It is a heartbreaking story filled with raw emotions that is beautifully and emotionally written. The title is so symbolic and as you get into the heart of the story you start to fully understand the impact of what A Mother’s Goodbye means for both Heather and Grace. Three simple words that hold such a deep meaning to this story. It just hits you right in the gut and pulls out all of the feels. It is absolutely heart wrenching and devastating. Kate Hewitt does not hold anything back and she does not sugar coat adoption, loss or pain.

I was captivated right from the start and even now that I have finished, I know that this story is going to stay with me for a while. Another stunning read from Bookouture and my first book by Kate Hewitt.
Before reading this book, I assumed it to be a story about the battle between two equally deserving women who both wanted the same thing, a child, and what they wouldn’t do to have that child. Written from each ‘Mother’s’ point of view, I was lulled into a sense that I was correct in my assumptions very early into this book.
However, while part of my assumptions were correct, this book was so much more. It wasn’t about winning or losing, it was about the selfless choices made for the outright happiness of the child and the brittle yet unconditional relationship between families that every reader can relate to deep into their core.
This book hit me deep, it had me grabbing for the tissues for the last unputdownable quarter of the book and Kate’s execution of this story was so on point it has rendered me speechless. An outstandingly realistic journey about love, loss, jealousy, bitterness, family and friendship, this book has it all and will remain with you long after the final page.

Grace is a high flyer who is devastated by the death of her father. This leads Grace to make a serious assessment of her life which leads to drastic changes.
This is a powerful story of love and heartbreak. I read this book with tears streaming down my face in some parts. It is real, visceral and so emotional. I felt so much empathy for both the women and could understand totally their points of view, both at the time of the birth and in the ensuing years. The gut-wrenching decisions that had to be made were so realistic and so poignant. Will definitely be looking for more by this author.

Heart wrenching but beautifully written
Another fantastic Kate Hewitt book. Having only recently lost my father but also been with my mum and sister as they fought cancer bravely and as they lost that battle, this story hit many personal notes for me. Being left single and childless like the character of Grace it was maybe a little too close for comfort at times but I became almost invested in the characters I needed to keep reading. The ending was very different to that I expected which only served to make me more teary and snottynosed than I was already. Can't recommend this book highly enough but with the caveat of making sure you have enough time to not be able to put it down and enough tissues to mop up the tears!

I received this book "A Mother's Choice" from NetGalley and all opinions expressed are my own.
I cannot believe how much this book touched me. It got to one point where I had to stop reading because my chest hurt so bad from emotion and the tears were flowing. Heather already has 3 children and then she finds out she is pregnant. The family is already struggling so she doesn't know what she is going to do. I really loved Grace, that is the part where I had to stop reading for a bit - when she finds out for sure that there is no hope. I really loved this book and I highly recommend. I would give this more than 5 stars if I could.

Make sure you grab a box of tissues and keep it close when you sit down to read this one. Two very different women are forever linked by their love for one baby and their lives are forever changed and tangled together. This is a deeply emotional story that will have you tearfully turning the pages.
The characters were developed wonderfully and the story line was handled with such finesse I was fully invested from the beginning. It also makes a mother think about how they would feel in similar circumstances. This was a heart-wrenching journey that I won’t soon forget.

A beautiful tear jerker of a story.
This is a tear jerker, a beautifully written tear jerker. I will definitely be reading future novels by Kate Hewitt. Reminds me of the writing styles of Jodi Piccoult and Karen Kingsbury. I could not put this down. As a mother, and as someone with a family history of breast cancer, this story really resonates.

I’ve always enjoyed books by Kate Hewitt previously but A Mother’s Goodbye is on a whole other level. This story piques your interest on the cover blurb and once you have started reading it’s too late you are well and truly hooked.
It’s not a new situation, young family, living in a small apartment, no money to pay the bills and the hubby Kev has been injured at work so no income other than precarious disability benefits. So when Heather plucks up the courage to tell him she is pregnant he gives the typical ignorant reaction by asking her what SHE is going to do about it!!
Not wanting to give away any spoilers that aren’t on the cover, but Heather makes the impossible choice to have the baby but relinquishes for adoption. Grace is able to provide a decent home … follow the heartbreak via Heather and Grace’s point of view.
This is a tale with such depth, pure gut wrenching pain, beware you will need tissues. It is a very delicate subject matter and from personal experience I found it an extraordinarily difficult read but one that I felt I needed to do. However if you aren’t in a strong place mentally just be aware of the trigger warnings for adoption.
It almost seems bad manners to say how much I enjoyed this book because of it’s contents but it is a mesmerising read from beginning to end. Well done Kate, this shows huge talent to write a book like this.

I cried so much reading this story.This book really grabbed me from page one and did not let go!Its told from the point of view of both Heather and Grace....( the birth mother and adoptive mother). You see into the thoughts and feelings of both mothers.... which both of their pain makes you cry. I read it in a day and a half. Could have read it in one sitting if i had the time. This is the second book that I have read by this author and I can't wait to read more of hers. The authors ability to weave such an emotional story about love, family, adoption and so much more keeps me wanting to turn the page. The characters in the story feel so real. Another great read!

I absolutely loved every minute of reading a Mothers choice, it's such a heartbreaking read, the characters were so well developed, I really felt for Grace Heather and Issac, this is such a wonderful book, I highly recommend it.

This is an emotional and powerful piece of writing which is told through the viewpoint of two women, Heather and Grace. On the surface they both appear to be complete opposites but they both share a deep love for a child and a need to be a mother. Protective and nurturing, they have difficult choices to make. There are some heart-rending episodes, made all the more affecting because you have become so invested in both these women and care what happens to them.
Both women are well drawn characters and you get to learn a lot about what makes them tick. You also get to see how the decisions they make about a baby ripple out into both their lives, and how others react to their choices. This is far from a sugary look at motherhood but it goes straight to its centre showing that the tie to a child can be an almost primal, visceral need. Halfway through the story there is a shocking change of direction and it becomes a difficult read but I was fascinated to see what the outcome was going to be and dreading it at the same time.
In short: an involving and emotional read. Top marks!
