Oh, woah, I can’t think straight! This volume, seriously, I mean THIS volume! I’m totally blown away! I really can’t believe what I read, this was hella freaking a ride to hell! I’m amazed!! In all honesty, I didn’t expect this manga series to become this good when I started to read volume 1 but it’s turned out to be one of my favorite ongoing series and with each installment it gets better in unexpected and unpredictable ways! Pure love!
I’d thought, volume 5 could be a chill read because they would save the chapter chief and of course I knew there would be a more or less hard fight but no doubt, they would win and defeat Cleopatra. And then it’ll be all fine and stuff. Hm, I wasn’t totally wrong. They saved the chief — and seriously the back story of Haru and how his family died, the magai and everything was heart-breaking! Haru did such an awesome character development in the previous and in this volume! So proud of the kid~ Also, it’s wonderful to see the dynamics between him and Imhotep because like Haru, Imhotep as well lacks friends (though, their personalities are 100% different). The way they all worked together and especially how Imhotep was the entrusted leader gave me goosebumps of happiness! I’m feeling too much and I loved it! Expected but awesome!
And then, I was dragged to hell... I think, this is where the real mystery starts and the previous volumes gave the information needed to understand what’s actually going on. It’s not only the pharao of the magai who uses Djoser’s body about whom we don’t have any clue which god he imitates, not only that he attempted to awake magai of the ennead but now it’s about the so called truth of the world which the ennead is aware of (of course they are!) and wants to hide by, it seems, all means.
Whatever this truth might be, Imhotep has no intel and only can surmise whether there is any connection to the ancient ritual and the necessary sacrifice of the sunsoul. The only thing he’s learnt, the ennead sealed a black serpent away in hell even before the actual birth of magai!
There’s no doubt, this is important, considering one of the ennead (Seth) killed the information broker before he could reveal more to Imhotep! No surprise, I’m wondering what this TRUTH OF THE WORLD might be and the black serpent somehow reminds me in the fall of man in christianity. Considering how the serpent brought the first sin upon humanity and caused Adam and Eve to be banned from paradise, the black serpent might be the reason of the birth of the first magai and with this it brought that plague upon the world. So, what’s if that black serpent is the ultimate cause of evil? Just theorizing here...but what if?
And with this in mind, there’s Khonsu! How can I put it without revealing spoilers? Awesome mastermind Khonsu, I always knew there’s more to know about him. It already was obvious for some while: he’s plotting, he’s scheming, he’s deceiving. But for now the outcomes always were ”good”... So, how to judge him? I like him because he’s interesting and kind of superior (I truly love this kind of character!) but I would never blindly trust him and always be wary. The new details about him which we get in this volume blew me away. Seriously! This development is so goooood, I yearn to know more! Especially about his true role, his true intentions and also his past. What caused him to be the way he is? Also, what’s his position towards the ennead? I smell danger and drama and I like it!
By the way, I enjoy how the ennead is added to this series and I think their roles will come more to the center sooner or later. At least it’s obvious, there’s rivalry among them, not all of them but partly. I can’t help it, I see Seth siding with magai pharao Djoser! Thinking about false gods and real gods mixing up and bonding against one another! How exciting for the plot!
Additionally I’m pretty proud, I slowly learn the names and understand the positions and functions of the different gods. As I’m not very familiar with ancient egypt and egyptian history, I only know the most common gods. But the series slowly teaches the reader and doesn’t overwhelm him with details, this is well done, I can say because I’ve read books which totally failed at giving such background information.
Back to the actual plot, I’ve already talked about Khonsu but let me add, there’s one more thing he’ll introduce us to...... There’s a phone call at the end and honestly, the very last page left me speechless! I discussed it with a friend who enjoys this series like I do and we both agreed, this wasn’t predictable at all. At all! I can’t.... Volume 6 will be intense, very intense and also emotional, I presume!
I think I write this every time after reviewing another volume of Imhotep but this series is so well composed and written, it gets better with every volume and for now this was my favorite one! I’d give a grand applause to the mangaka, she’s a genius! And this is something I rarely say about a mangaka! If you haven’t done so yet, please read this volume, or this series! You’ll be blown away!
