Eric Carle was an American author, designer and illustrator of children's books. His picture book The Very Hungry Caterpillar, first published in 1969, has been translated into more than 66 languages and sold more than 50 million copies. Carle's career as an illustrator and children's book author accelerated after he collaborated on Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?. Carle illustrated more than 70 books, most of which he also wrote, and more than 145 million copies of his books have been sold around the world. In 2003, the American Library Association awarded Carle the biennial Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal (now called the Children's Literature Legacy Award), a prize for writers or illustrators of children's books published in the U.S. who have made lasting contributions to the field. Carle was also a U.S. nominee for the biennial, international Hans Christian Andersen Award in 2010.
Got a preschooler in your family? This is great Eric Carle material for Easter. My wife and I are grandparents of preschoolers who love books and, right now, we're shopping for Easter-themed books. We already love Carle's work and have a number of his books on our various households' shelves. But we only discovered this one a week or so ago. Now that it's arrived, we're super-pleased to have this to share with our granddaughters. And we're reviewing it right now, while others are shopping for holiday-themed reading. Each page has the hungry caterpillar on it along with a different scene. The challenge is to find the Easter egg on each page hidden under a flap. It's a great challenge for the youngest readers because there are several flaps on most pages. When the Easter egg is found, we're invited to shout out "Good job!" or "Hooray!" or something like that. This is great fun for families. Carle's publisher recommends this book for ages 2 to 4 years. We're reading it with granddaughters who are less than 1 and 3.
First sentence: A horse and cow are grazing right beside the barn. Will you find some Easter eggs hiding on this farm? A group of clucking hens are waking from their rest. Can you find an Easter egg hidden near their nest?
Premise/plot: What you see is what you get. This is an Easter-themed interactive (lift the flap) board book for parents (or caretakers) to share with little ones. The Very Hungry Caterpillar must be visiting a farm (or maybe that's where he's originally from???) this Easter.
My thoughts: The illustrations are very much Eric Carle (or Eric Carle like). The text, well, it's serviceable. About what you'd expect in an Easter-themed board book. It's not like this board book is going to offer serious competition for 'best book ever' with the original Very Hungry Caterpillar. It's a gift-able book starring a beloved icon.
Its a book about Easter Egg hunting. This book is awesome! A rhyming book for children, where they have to find an Easter egg. The pages reveal, for example, animals, a leaf, a flower, and there are various things there, such as animals. You have to find an Easter egg on each page. A very interesting book, with nice illustrations. At the end, the very hungry caterpillar hides behind the basket, along with the Easter eggs. He wishes the children a Happy Easter.
