After traveling the country in hopes of reaching the safety of home, Rowan finds herself in a world turned upside down. Her parents are gone, and she’s surrounded by people she barely knows, and the only refuge she’s ever known is anything but safe. Zombies have taken over not just her hometown, but the rest of the world as well, and now she must work with fellow survivors, Devon and Kiaya, to find a way to survive this strange new world.
Too bad the extinction of civilization hasn’t erased the complications of everyday life. Between learning to navigate a world overtaken by the dead and struggling to work through her grief over losing everything, Rowan must navigate her growing attraction for Devon, as well as deal with her suspicion that something isn’t right with some of their fellow survivors.
Just when she thinks she has a hold on the emotional rollercoaster of this new world, someone from her past makes a surprise – and unwanted – reentry into her life, bringing with them a seed of hope that threatens to once again flip everything upside down.
I'm a mom of four, Air Force wife, and author of adult and young adult dystopian, post-apocalyptic, and science fiction. I love intense world building and character driven stories that feature strong female leads - as well as a side of romance - and any end of the world scenario. Zombies, aliens, a distant future where people have no clue how the world ended in the first place, you name it, I will create a story there!
Having lived in a lot of different places after more than a decade as an Air Force wife, I love setting my books in cities I've actually lived in to give them authenticity. I've resided in: Indiana, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina, California, and Oklahoma but am currently back in my home state of Ohio where I live with my husband, four kids, two dogs, and three cats.
When I'm not writing, you can find me by my pool (in the summer), getting lost in some binge-worthy show or at a play with my husband, patronizing one of the great restaurants in my small town of Troy, Ohio with my family, or traveling. I want to see everything and make a point of visiting a new place every year!
Some of my favorite books are The Hunger Games, Pride and Prejudice, The Host, and The Stand. My favorite movies are Aliens, Jaws, Signs, Say Anything, Everything Everywhere All At Once, and The Greatest Showman.

Those who have read Kate L. Mary’s first installment in The Far Series, “Far from Home”, will hungrily devour this dark and deeply involved next chapter of the ongoing saga.
I’m already itching for the next installment. Kate has created a new group of survivors determined to keep pushing forward. Highly recommend this series.
In the continuing saga, we get to know Rowan, Kiaya & Devon a bit more. More of what makes them and the others in their group, tick. They find a larger group, but are they and the location a good thing? Rowan's past comes back, will it haunt her?
This book picks up exactly where the first in the series, "Far From Home" leaves off. I liked the way that the author brought up pertinent points from the first book in the first chapter of this one. Too many times in a series, I have to go back and reread portions to remember what has happened. The author does this in a perfectly natural way, like the character was remembering the events in their own mind.
Rowan and her friends have set up housekeeping in her parent's home after arriving from their cross-country trip. Rowan and Devon definitely have feelings for each other, but Rowan is unsure if this is a ridiculous thing to pursue during a zombie apocalypse. "You shouldn't feel bad about finding something good in the middle of all the bad."
Rowan has to face the truth about her parents and try to move on with her life. "I had to learn to face the horror surrounding me and meet it head on." The way that the author handled the emotions involved with this was well-written and totally believable. What would you do if someone you loved was turned into a zombie, destined to roam the streets forever? Would you be able to put them down or would you just turn and run?
Rowan and friends discover other survivors and are offered the chance to join them in their newly established compound. But, is this a good idea? Can these people be trusted? Or, are they better off trying to make their own way in this horrific new reality?
The inclusion of a mentally challenged adult and young children in this series adds a touch of authenticity to what is happening. How can a society that has fall apart deal with handicaps, infirmities and people of all ages? And , what about addicts? Do you include them in your group or cut and run? "Not everyone is strong enough to get through trauma."
There is plenty of action and zombie killing in the book to satisfy the diehard zombie reader, but there is plenty of emotion and humor as well. "Of all the stupid shit to hoard, why toilet paper?" "At least we know the zombies stumbling down the street have clean asses."
The author has thrown in some typical horror movie scenes (stupid young woman going into a dark basement) that shows her true love of the genre. And, Rowan continues to make some really stupid mistakes that made me want to throw the book against the wall. But, not everybody can be a superhero and it's nice to read a book with realistic, relatable characters.
I look forward to continuing this series and hope to see more crossover between it and others that the author has written
Queen of Post-apocalyptic did it again. Far from Safe start where first book ended. I really liked this book and it's so interesting to see how these characters behave in this new world. World where you have to be careful with the zombies but also with other humans. I really like Rowan and how she becomes stronger every day. I also like Devon and I wish we could get his pov too. Can't wait to read next book because this ended with cliffy.
This is such an exciting series....in bk 2 Far From Safe is exactly right on the money. When Rowan and her companions finally make it to her home in Troy, OH she must come to terms with the horrors she finds. They come across another group of survivors while out looking for supplies.....but are they friend or foe? Always constantly on their minds is that they not only have to be aware of the zombies around them, BUT that not all the humans can be trusted. Monsters come in all forms!
I always enjoy reading Kate L. Mary zombie books. The characters are fascinating and I love to learn more about them as the book goes on. This one has a doozy of a cliffhanger at the end. But that kind of conclusion just makes us readers hungry for more. Can't wait for the next book!
Rowan has finally made it to her safe haven, home. Yeah well its not as safe as she was hoping as zombies have overtaken her neighborhood. Rowan finds her undead mother wondering the streets outside her home. The last she heard of her father he was on duty at the hospital. Rowan believes that if he has not made it home by now then he has probably joined the undead.
Far From Safe tells the story of a small group of survivors fighting to stay alive in a world gone mad. Their food is running out and the survivors must face the undead in hopes of scavenging enough to help tide them over until they can make it to a more permanent safe haven. Join Rowan, Devon, Kiaya and others as they venture out into this world of madness in search of food and a safe place to live.
In Far From Safe the descriptions are so vividly written that I could see it all playing out in my head as if I was right there with Rowan and I could almost hear the squishing sound as she plunged her knife into a zombies head. It was ad if I could feel her pain when she saw her undead mother wondering around the streets. I felt so bad for her.
When I was reading Far From Safe and they were fighting zombies it was as if I was watching an episode of The Walking Dead. I don’t know why but I kept seeing the zombies in a fog or mist creepy like scene. Oh I love this zombie world from the Far Series and can’t wait to read more of it. Waiting for the next book in the Far Series is what truly leaves me on the edge of my seat just thinking about it.
Come join Rowan, Devon, Kiaya and the others as they fight their way through this mad world to find their safe haven in Far From Safe. I think you will want to start with the first book in the Far Series Far From Home to see how and where Rowan’s journey began.
If you are a fan of zombies or The Walking Dead then you are definitely going to love Far From Safe. One click your copy of Far From Safe today to begin an adventure into the world of the undead! Don’t forget to check out Far From Home first.
I chose to read this book after receiving a free e-copy. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.
Rowan and the group she is with have made it to her house. With her mom a zombie and her dad most likely dead, she would give anything to stay in her house, but she knows that it not safe. They’ll stay long enough to get supplies and then they’re off. They’re just not sure where to yet.
I like most of the main characters in Far From Safe. The children and their uncle try to stay busy while the adults take care of things. Lisa is a badass, and Kiaya can hold her own. Rowan and Devon are falling in love (or lust?); I’m not sure about that relationship yet. I don’t know if I like Kiaya’s sister, Zara, or not because she is quiet and clings to Kiaya when possible. I like Buck but he could be a problem in the future. At least they all know it. The other two, I don’t like because they both give me the creeps.
When they stumble upon a group that includes Rowan’s ex, she’s not happy about it, but he truly seems like a nice guy. Maybe he’s matured since they were together? Should they trust this new group? Should they join them?
I like the author’s writing style. As with the first book, Far From Home, I read this book quickly, but it ends with a cliffhanger. A BIG cliffhanger. So, the waiting begins…
After finally making it home Rowan must come to terms with everything that's changed. That however seems hard to do when reminders of all that she's lost are everywhere. The group has taken over her house, figuring out what to do now should come first. The daily grind of living during a zombie apocalypse is pretty much guess work, but the team pulls together and tries to make it work. Until they stumble upon another group and everything begins to change. Her budding relationship with Devon is evolving and she is closer than ever with the women of her group. Miller however is a different story! A little action and excitement and some loving to brighten the pages. I cannot wait for the third book and it's always a pleasure to be back in Kate L. Mary's zombie world!
Wow...talk about a cliffhanger! If I could, I would smack Rowan upside the head as hard as I could! We have gone from our little band of survivors joining a group of survivors led by a bunch of gym rats to a hostile meeting with a group wanting nothing more than to take what they want. And now Devon must come up with a plan... Lord Kate, don’t make us wait long for book 3!!!
FAR FROM SAFE is by far one of my most sought after zombie read this year. I was gnawing at the bit for it’s release. And what a glorious day it is to have this book in my hands. Yeah, it was absolutely fantastic and pretty much unputdownable.
It has been since the very first of April that I have yet to read any zombie and/or apocalyptic stories. I just could not do it with the pandemic raging like one of these books come to life. But Mary turned all that around with Devon, Rowan, Kiaya and many new favorites. I wholeheartedly love this series!! I would love to see many, many books come from it.
What’s amazing about her books, is that even though we all know this world from the other books Mary has created, it comes off different in each series. It 100% is these incredible characters. Each create a phenomenal world unique to them, and sometimes with a few crossovers dotted throughout.
But guys, so much happens in this book. I was all over the place with my feelings for Devon and Rowan. My hatred for Miller. My unease with Buck and Hank. I am telling you, the emotions are high in this one. I am so desperate to find out what happens next....because what the actual crap!!! THAT ENDING!!! Bring it to us quickly, please!! 5 Stars!!
Why didn’t I wait to read this? I should have waited for book 3. I had forgotten so much about this story in the wait for book 2. I took me a minute to remember the whole crew. I have not been waiting too long. I enjoyed book 1 so much that I preordered this one. It ended on a CLIFFHANGER!!! Ugh!!! It’s well written. I waiting on pins and needles.
Amazing! I so love this author and her ability’s today write Awesome zombie books. This one was amazing and I can’t wait for the next book. The characters and the suspense and the curiosity about certain characters. I can’t wait for more.
Our group of survivors from the prior volume; Rowan, Kiaya, Devon, and Miller cross the dangerous countryside, heading for Rowan’s home in search of family. The last Rowan knew of her father, he was working at the hospital. She hopes she will find her mother alive but fears the worst. Along the way, a few survivors joined the party; Lisa a nurse from Miller’s camp, Hank a young native American, Buck an older gent who likes his liquor, and Uncle Randall caring for the children Mike and Lexi. It seems that the group tends to wander in the wilderness, searching for food and supplies without making any measurable progress. Kiaya has come out of her shell and made quite a turnaround in coming to terms with her past, and expressing herself as a young woman. Devon also has shown growth, surrendering the hard-line police officer pose, and curt retorts for a more amiable personality. Unfortunately, Corporal Miller is still a PITA to all concerned. Rowan, on the other hand, is an enigma. My opinion of Rowan, consistent with the prior volume is that she is an indecisive, insecure, crybaby. Yet, she can turn about to be sincere, sympathetic, and forgiving. Rowan expressed it clearly herself, “I wasn’t built for this world. I was an only child and coddled. Never had to work, never had to struggle, never had to fight. My parents had made sure I had grown up in a cocoon of security. But now the safety that had always surrounded me was gone. And I didn’t know how to fit into this new reality. Didn’t know for sure if I could.” According to Rowan, her reactions towards Devon were crazy and ill-timed. At first, she didn’t even know if she liked him. What initially bugged her about Devon was that he reminded her of her first boyfriend Doug, which didn’t end well. But the familiarity of the small group and Devon’s persistent flirting began to take their toll on Rowan. As a final point, I believe the conclusion to Far from Safe reinforces my opinions. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
I thought I could overlook the stupidity and emotional irrationality of the MC in this series.. But no. I liked every character but her.
She is such a child and risks everyone's life and then..is ok with that because her 'man' will save her. Nothing is more sickening that reading about a dumb blonde waiting for a guy to save her after repeatedly making huge stupid decisions. Nope.
I’ve spent months reading the other series set in this world and I’ve absolutely loved them, so I was really looking forward to reading this series and starting the apocalypse from the beginning again! This series was very interesting and there was obviously a lot in it! There were a lot of enemies, teamwork, love and zombies! The plot also held my attention all the way through and it had a lot of romance in it between two main couples! The romance allowed for a few steamy scenes too! There was also a lot of action and suspense in the books, which kept the plot moving and made us lose some important characters! The plot of the entire series developed further than I was expecting and I loved it a lot! The characters were also amazing and made this book even better! Rowan and Kiaya were the two female characters! I have to be honest and say that I thought that Rowan was going to be a kickass character, but there were points were she rushed into decisions and ended up putting her group in danger and I found her kind of childlike! She did grow on me at points! For me, Kiaya came a long way in this series and she grew a lot and was a strong character who could look after herself and was a great friend to Rowan! Devon, Doug and Gabe were all the main male characters! Devon was the love interest of Rowan and they got together pretty quickly and as the series progressed they had a family! Devon was very protective of Rowan and he would do anything to protect those he cared about! Doug started a romantic relationship with Kiaya as this series progressed! They did go through a rough patch, but it was easy to see how much they meant to each other! They were both stubborn as well lol! This series was mainly written from Rowen and Devon’s point of view, but quite a few chapters were written from Kiaya, Doug and Gabe’s point of views! I loved all the different point of views because it helped me connect with all the characters and see how they were dealing with the changes they were going through! It allowed for more things to happen in the plot as well, which helped as the characters did go through some situations by themselves! I now can’t wait to read more books from this author! I’m not sure if there’s going to be another series set in this world, but I really hope there is! It’s been a hell of a journey from book one of the Broken World series to the eighth book of the Far series! I also love the covers for this series! They really suit the books and the apocalyptic aspect of the plot! They suits the covers for the other series as well! The cover models are also the perfect Rowan, Kiaya and Devon!
Well, Kate L. Mary you’ve done it to me again!! I’m sitting here again speechless after finishing Far From Safe . I thought I was speechless when Far From Home ended but I was even more so mind blown this time around.
If you haven’t read Far From Home then stop and go back and read it before you open this book. This isn’t a standalone and can’t be as one!!
We pick up exactly where we left off. Rowan has finally made it home and in time to see her poor mom walking down the block with the rest of the neighbors who’ve all passed and are now zombies. With no word from her father in weeks, Rowan is positive he passed away while working at the hospital. She’s lost her parents and is devastated but she must keep going or she won’t make it.
Rowan, Devon, Kiaya, Lisa and Buck must figure out what’s next for them. Bc, it’s not just themselves they gotta look out for. As much as Rowan wants to stay locked up in her childhood home and hide, they’re running low on supplies and not hidden away safely and there’s zombies surrounding them.
The group comes up with a good starting plan. Check out Rowan’s neighbors houses for two things 1-survivors and 2-supplies. Grab as much as possible that they can use. Then, head to the stores and stock up on everything else. Afterwards, they gotta figure out where they can go to that’ll keep their group together and safe. Rowan has one other thing on her list of things to do: bury her mom but she’s keeping that to herself for now.
Things definitely aren’t easy in times like this. You gotta be on guard 110% of the time. BC, at any minute a zombie can pop up outta nowhere and attack. Then there’s the chance you bump into somebody who’s not dead but they’re far from a good person.
While out on a supply run they come across zombies but when they do bump into humans Rowan was shocked she knew one of the living. It was her ex Doug and Rowan definitely wasn’t happy to see him. She was glad he wasn’t dead but didn’t wanna see him lol.
When Doug and his crew invite Rowan and her friends to join them at the school they’re at none of them are totally sure it’s the right decision. They know it’s safer then where they’re at now. When they get there they’re even more unsure them before. Before they can really figure out their next choice they find themselves in real trouble and Rowan throws herself head first into the lions den with some dangerous lions.
I felt so many emotions reading this. My heart pounded so many times. I kept hoping and praying nothing happened to Rowan, Devon, Kiaya and Lisa every time they left the house.
Miller is still a tool. He’s a complete jerk and my gut is telling me he’s lying about who he really is. Never really had an issue with Hank before but now I’m getting creeper vibes of him.
I liked Buck from the beginning. But, now he’s showing another side to him and I wasn’t sure how it was gunna turn into. When he told Rowan his story and what made him into what he was OMG I was laying in bed crying and feeling for him and didn’t blame him.
Now we have Doug back in Rowan’s life. I totally 100% understood why she felt the way she did towards him. Shoot I have some ex’s who have done me wrong so I get it. I don’t know how it’s gunna be with him yet. But, he seems like a good guy. He proved himself with a few things so far that chipped a few notches in his favor.
When I read Rowan’s moms letter I was legit bawling right along next to Rowan. I don’t know if I would’ve survived after reading a letter like that from my mom. I’m just saying.
I’m excited for the next book after the explosive cliffhanging ending!! I’m gunna need Devon and Doug to man up, team together and put their heads together and get Rowan outta the horrible mess she got herself into. Please guys!!
I received this book via a promo code and this is my voluntary review. Book 2 of this branch in the Broken World universe (I do recommend starting from Broken World->Silent World.. followed by Alone then the Oklahoma Wasteland Series 1-2 and Broken World Stories Novellas then Twisted World-Twisted Fate) There are some other short love stories dotted around in different time lines which are nice to enjoy afterwards.
This book follows another group of survivors at the start of the viral outbreak, Having travelled home from Phoenix University, in Arizona. Rowan is now taking refuge in her home with Devon, Kiaya and the rest of their group. Dealing with the knowledge her world has ended and her mother is dead, she tries her best to keep her group together because there's safety in numbers despite any as Buck's drinking becomes increasingly worrisome, they might need Miller to stick around, even if he hasn't been pulling his weight so far. Whatever her doubts about her Z World Motley Crew, they have to choose to trust one another fast when they discover another group during one of their supply runs complete with a familiar face, her ex-boyfriend Doug. Deciding there is definitely better odds against the undead in building up their numbers and that the kids in their group would benefit from the extra backup... they make a choice to join Gabe's group at the School but the promise of safety is short-lived. Gabe's leadership flawed and reckless as he prefers to arm only the men in his camp. An oversight which has grave consequences as this book ends on a cliffhanger.
I had initially read this book months ago after listening to Far From Home and though narration can come across as a little monotone but I still enjoyed it. Looking forward to jumping into the Book 3, Far From Lost before picking up with my favorite character in the Broken World Series. Angus James.
What exactly does Devon like about Rowan? Probably the same thing whiny fake Millet and soon to be rapist Hank does: her looks! Cause it sure as heck can’t be personality (prickly, irrational, dumb, closed off, argumentative, know it all idiot, careless) or how she treats him.
She was nicer to Miller when she was trying to be cool with him. She was nicer to the alcoholic or teenage freak.
Story is great Writing superb Other characters need to have a voice Rowan needs to STFU and stop being the main character. She’s a dumb, young idiot only thrrr for her looks. Without Devon or Doug or Miller or Hank being interested in her, she’d be nothing. Zero substance.
Other characters could drive this storyline much better in far more interesting directions.
Please let her grow up and become more kind and commonsensical in the next book. Or kill her off so Devon can become more than just a supportive horn dog, while Miller is an annoying one and Doug id a past possibly hopeful one and so on.
Enough with the ‘girl with looks always gets her way and saved’ - make your heroines interesting
Once again Kate L Mary writes another riveting zombie apocalypse novel to add to her Far Series. Far from Safe is the same group of survivors we met in book one who traveled across the country to get back to Rowan's home town only to discover her parents are zombies.
Mystery, intrigue, survival are just a few things you'll find at the forefront of this novel. Mary continues to reveal each character's back story and she dives deeper into the apocalypse. Habits, desire to be reunited with family and discovery of a new way to live are just a few things that you'll find in this book.
Mary ends on a tiny cliffhanger. Although it's not that surprising if you've read or have been a fan of her novels. It's more of a lead in to the next book, which I can't wait to read! Mary continues to be one of my favorite new discoveries. Since March of 2020, I've been completely addicted to her books and couldn't more highly recommend this author to future readers.
Far from Safe (Far Series, Book 2) by Kate L. Mary and narrated by Nicole Jones is an overall OK addition but not the norm for this author. I felt this was more of a filler book (sorry Kate!). The narrator was good and I would listen to her again.
What’s it about? Rowan and the group continue their fight for living in Rowan’s home town. The group learns the fate of those in her town. There isn’t much zombie action and there’s a huge focus on Rowan’s love life (past and present). They meet another group. I struggled to make it though and it took me several days instead of what would normally be one sitting. I honestly don’t know what else to say about this book because it was just meh to me compared to Kate’s others (which are fantastic).
*I was given a free review copy of the audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. Thank you for allowing me to listen and review the book!
Narrator did a good job. She’s the same one as the first book; she still fit the characters well, but I’d still like more emotion and flow to her performance. I still liked the listen though.
Enjoying this series! Zombies are cool, and I like the characters. The characters do make some not so smart choices, but I like how they are survivors. Rowan, Kiaya, Devon, and the rest do what they can to survive in this zombie infested world. Unfortunately, the zombies aren’t the only problem in this world! There’s plenty of unsavory people out there causing more problems all over. I really enjoy these zombie, post-apocalyptic reads with a dash of romance! Ready for the next one!
If Rowan wasn't whining throughout a good 50% of the book I'd give it 5 stars. I had to remind myself she was supposed to be an adult and not one of the children. I mean here's big, strong, rational Devon talking about how much he cares about her because she's the most beautiful thing he's ever seen, but that's about it. Otherwise she acts and behaves like a complete emotional moron! It's like he's literally into her because of her looks only. Wish the books were from Kiaya's point of view, or anyone elses for that matter.
So far I'm loving the series but this part had me agitated. Rowan was doing the most. I get she was grieving for her family but she was like a spoiled brat. This whole book revolved around her and what she wanted without regards to the others. She keeps putting everyone else in jeopardy to have her way. I'm hoping the next part gets better but seems like it's still gonna be about her. I feel like the story is dragging now but maybe things will turn around with the new characters.
I enjoy post apocalyptic stories that take their time to establish their world and give their protagonists time to develop. It is more realistic when they need to develop skills and mindsets to handle the horrors around them. Having said that Rowan really pushed my buttons especially at the end with her behavior but considering that she was highly privileged beforehand and inexperienced it should not have come as that much of a surprise. It definitely kept the adrenaline pumping.
A good read, fast paced with plenty of action. It didn't take me long to get immersed in the story, hanging on every word, I really enjoyed more time with my favourite characters Rowan, Kiaya and Devyn and some interesting new additions, there were some great plot twist but unfortunately ended on a cliff hanger, which left me desperate to find out whats next, I received this book in exchange for my honest review.
Far from Safe (Far #2) was a good read by Kate L. Mary. Rowan traveled the country to reach home safely and she finds her world turned upside down. Both her parents are gone and she finds herself surrounded around people that she barely knows. Zombies have taken over the world and she must find a way to survive this strange world. Rowan finds herself attracted to Devon and its getting harder to fight. I really enjoyed reading this book and cant wait to read more by the author.
This book definitely picks up more and the characters have started developing more fully. Kiaya is still my favorite by far but I’m starting to enjoy the MC now as well which is such a relief. Watching her jump right in and embrace the actions required of her new world was surprising and relieving.
The world building feels quite real and I could easily see the scenarios play out exactly how they are.
The cliffhanger is So juicy! I can’t wait to see what happens next!
