Can I give it 10 stars? Or maybe 20? It shredded my heart into a million tiny pieces, but it was SO good!!! Can't wait until everyone can read it.

Oh, where to start? It takes a special kind of author to drag me into a story and make me feel all the emotions. Tricia is just such an author. Seriously, The Blades of Acktar are some of the few books that have stressed me out. Ask my mom. I was intensely stressed while reading Defy. The characters. Oh my goodness. Or maybe I should say the character. Yes, I’m talking about Leith. I adore Leith. Leith is a precious cinnamon roll. Apparently that’s now what we call sweet, adorable, precious characters who face terrible struggles (e.g. Bucky Barnes). *shrugs* Works for me. But yes, Leith is one of my preciouses. You know, those all time favorite characters you want to hug and place in bubble wrap and take them away from their author until said author learns to play nice? Leith is one of them. And it’s terribly ironic considering Tricia and I are basically evil author twins. I’m sure my readers want to take my characters away from me. But that’s what I find so great about Tricia’s books. I don’t think I’ve ever read books that are quite so good at giving me a taste of my own medicine. It’s awesome.
All that flail-y fangirly-ness is to say, read this book. If you love tortured, but precious cinnamon roll characters, you will fall in love with Leith. And he isn’t the only great character in there, and all of them grow so much. Then there are a few you want to smack upside the head (or worse). Like a certain someone I wanted to smack because of his distrust for Leith. Then again, I suppose I’d feel the same way in his position.
I know this isn’t your typical analytical review (I’m terrible at those), but in all seriousness, I highly recommend Defy and all of Tricia’s books. While some of it might be a bit intense for very sensitive readers, I also found them very encouraging. The faith element of the story is very strong and very real. And these are especially great books if you are looking for non-magical fantasy.

How to describe my feelings for Defy, book three of THE BLADES OF ACKTAR series by Tricia Mingerink ... It was fantastic. It was also daunting and heavy. Made me giggle hysterically. Melted my heart. Strengthened my soul. In short, it's a thought-provoking novel exploring perilous and even terrifying times; yet there are lovely moments of humor and sweetness - and the characters that experience them have quite captured my heart. I loved this book! This series is in many ways like the ILYON CHRONICLES by Jaye L. Knight, so if you like that series ... When I think of one, I think of the other, and just want to hug them both and all their characters! ^_^

So awesome to watch her faith deepen! Ah. She will always be a special character to me - some things about her are just so much like myself! It was so cool to see all the characters growing and changing, hurting and then healing. I love the depth to them, and can hardly wait to see more! Especially excited to finally get Martyn's story! He grew on me a lot.
Though I've probably said this in my other reviews for this series, I want to throw it out there again. THE BLADES OF ACKTAR is very intense at times. If you are really sensitive or get anxious a lot, you might want to proceed with caution. However, I find that this series encourages me in my Christian walk and even helps strengthen my faith! Finding characters that are so like you, and struggle like you, and watching them grow in the Lord is a pretty amazing thing. *smiles*
So beware of violence/gruesomeness, frightening scenes, and intensity ... but the depth of this series is really what makes it so incredible.
And that fact that it's Christian fantasy. Which is totally awesome. *grins* The faith theme is so real! The fantasy world epic. And Leith is just a fabulous guy. And Renna and Brandi both brilliant heroines in their own ways. There's battles. Tender scenes. Deepening romance. Tears, but strength. Hilarious moments. Defy may be the most humorous of all three books; more than once I had a huge grin on my face as I tried not to burst into hysterical laughter. Leith, Renna, Jamie, Brandi ... you guys make my day! *grins* So much adventure, my friends. Hard times, but hope breaks through unrelenting!
Leith and Renna!!!! *fangirly squeals* I love them so much! The moments in Defy!!!! I'm so happy! Where is the next book already?? *winks and grins*
The end felt a bit heavy, but after reading the book a second time, I was expecting it and was able to move past quickly and focus on the happy, heart-warming part. I cannot tell you how excited I am for Book 4!
Defy is a magnificent accomplishment, and, as always, I eagerly await another book from Tricia Mingerink!

Defy starts off right where Deny ends. This time, instead of opening with Leith's POV (which usually consists of him getting injured in some way *looks around suspiciously*), we get to get inside of Brandi's head, which I found very interesting. *smirks a little and chuckles*
This book starts out with each of the characters dealing with the ending of Deny. Brandi is furious at Leith, Renna is courageous (she's pretty awesome in this book, by the way), and Leith is troubled. Plus, our favorite villainous king is plotting something villainous (go figure). Ya know. Just in case there wasn't enough stress already.
Our beloved characters grow a whole lot in this book, and I found their developments fascinating to read about. I especially loved watching Renna's development. (Hurry! Go read the book so we can talk about it!)
Guys, we get to see Eagle Heights! :D I loved it so much. It was really cool seeing how Jamie and Brandi responded to it all. And the Rebel Leader! *freaks out* That part was so cool! :D Just you wait, dearies, just you wait. *smirks*
AND THE ENDING. My goodness. Lemme just say that, like the previous two, Tricia writes non-stop action till the very end. And y'all know what that means. *nods* You won't be able to put it down. *smiles evilly*

Rating: Four-point Seventy-five
Yet another incredible book by Tricia Mingerink. Having read her last two books and loving them, I was so excited to be part of the launch team for Defy. And may I just say, I am in love with this book!
I’ll just start with the amazing characters. Renna, a healer, is one of my absolute favorite characters of all time! AHH, I just love her so much! It was just so amazing to see her journey from being the fearful girl in Dare, to being the strong woman she was in Defy.
Also, Leith! I mean, who doesn’t love Leith. He was so awesome, and sweet. Almost too sweet, because he put himself in so much danger and I wanted him alive, and well. But no. *cries*
In this book we also got to adventure a bit more in Acktar. Like Eagle Heights! (*squeals* Yes, we get to go to Eagle Heights!) Then we had more time at Nalgar Castle, which I loved because I got to wander around the castle.
-Cons- I thought Leith and Renna’s relationship went a bit fast towards the end. Once they found out they both liked each other, they were quite touchy feely. Also, resistance was very, very much pushed in this book. Being non-resistant myself, I didn’t agree with this, but I didn’t lower the rating for difference in views.
As for who I would recommend this to: Anyone who is a fan of TBoA, (duh, Hannah. They probably already read it.) and anyone looking for an awesome, Christian fantasy read. The age would probably be fourteen and up due to some torture, and violence.

What an ending. I loved how it all wrapped up. Also Leith and Renna were so cute.

Very moving. I hate torture scenes but this one made me pause and reflect. Wow.
What a fantastic ending. Love the redemption, the forgiveness, the way this book is unashamedly Christian, the character arcs, the Renna/Leith romance during the worst of times. Sad about fun sparkly Brandi's realistic journey. Read this if you haven't.

Defy picks up right after book 2 ends. Which starts us right back off on an action packed ride. It follows the format of the previous books with plenty of edge-of-your-seat moments.
The characters all go through so much in this book. Brandi faces fear and doubt for perhaps the first time in her life. Leith struggles with the consequences of book 2 and what he must do to fix them. But let's talk about Renna for a moment. In my mind, this is her book. Her character arc had me fist pumping and I wanted to hug her. She's not the same person she was in the previous two books. She finally finds her footing and makes a stand. And I absolutely loved it. She was definitely one of my favorite parts of this book.
There were other favorite parts. Leith and Brandi's relationship will always be one of the best things ever. But I'm loving the friendship between Jamie and Brandi. Even the villainous King Respin had a great story line. We get to see more of him than in the previous books and I'm not sure how Tricia did it, but she got me to sympathize with him.
And Martyn. Can someone please give this guy a hug? If you've read the rest of the series, you know a bit of what I'm talking about, but I'm going to need a Leith/Brandi team up to help him out. :)

Highly recommended, especially for anyone who enjoys Christian fiction, stories of faith and friendship, and some awesome male/female leads.

It hurts to read this just as much the second time as the first. WAHHHHHH!!!!! Poor little characters!!! I can't believe she did that. But it's so good!!!! Now onto Deliver to read the best happy ending ever. :D

THIS BOOK WAS SO GOOD!!!!!!!!! No amount of these !!!!!!!!! can say how amazing it was. But yikes--I do NOT want to be a character in one of Tricia's books.
I am almost glad that I didn’t hear about Dare and Deny until March of this year. Had I heard about them any earlier, I might have pulled all of my hair out waiting for Defy. I had high expectations, and it didn’t disappoint! So many things happen—I think my heart got trampled into a million pieces. But oh! It’s SO good!!!!!
Plot/Storyline: 5/5
I love the story. It really can’t get much better. There was a lot of growth of our favorite characters in this book, which was fun to witness (some of the growth did feel like FINALLY!!!). :)

The characters are awesome; their awesomeness just grew in this book. And I love Jamie. He’s just so…adorable. I love how protective he is of Brandi.
Writing: 4/5
The first 5-ish chapters felt a bit rough and choppy. It smoothed out after that, though, and was absolutely fabulous.
Dialogue: 5/5
The way Tricia does dialogue is so unique and interesting. It’s like you’re really there, hearing every lilting tone and seeing every cocked eyebrow. I love it!
Want-to-read-ability: 5/5
Lots of twists and turns in the book that I wasn’t expecting—I was glued to the Kindle. It was so good! Lots of fangirl squealing happened while reading. :)

This book was amazing! Absolutely wonderful! Extremely well written, and the story is thoughtful, suspenseful, and intriguing. It had me on the edge of my seat numerous times! The themes of grace, justice and redemption were exceptionally laid out, and the biblical message was tactful, but in no way hidden. This would be a five star rating, except for the fact that there is some violence. I wouldn't recommend this for anyone under the age of 13. But overall, a fantastic book! Go pick up a copy and read it!

RTC: although this has one of my least favorite tropes it actually was a great book and ended well. This wraps up the trilogy. New characters introduced and Brandi surprised the heck out of me. Easy read but it has some twists and a few shocking moments that kept me turning the pages.

What I thought:
Guys, I’m serious when I say this, I can’t pick a favorite book in this series! Usually, I can pick one that I LOVE, then all the others are tied for second. But with The Blades of Acktar (hereby known as TBoA. I know, SUPER hard to remember!), I can’t pick!
Something I found cool was that Brandi was a narrator in this book. When it was first her, I was slightly confused since in the previous two books, only Leith and Renna narrated (right?!), but I LOVED her POV!
brain-of-squirrel-quoteOnce you get inside her head, you can really tell just how deep of a character she really is; that she’s not just some super bubbly little sister. She’s so dimensional and deals with a lot of super hard problems.
Without giving too much away, there is a “Mulan moment” (well, two, and the first. one. pained. me. greatly.). So, needless to say, I was a little (or A LOT) worried that it’d be cliche, but, it wasn’t!! What joy! Okay, maybe it was a little, but I didn’t really feel it was so!
Don’t worry, it wasn’t only Brandi in this book!!
Renna. Ooooohhhh, Renna. She had some tough stuff going on! A few times I was squealing (though not from a Blade Faythe moment…) and was on the edge of my seat the whole time! Well, bed, I guess.
Guys, this had closure (which makes sense, since it was originally going to be the last in the series), which was nice, BUT I STILL WANT THE NEXT BOOK NOW. ACK.
Writing/Plot:
If any of you guys are fans of Jaye L. Knight, then I can honestly say that you’d like this. While they’re different, Jaye and Tricia have similar writing styles (I’m just saying that, ’cause I know that some of my followers are Ilyon fans).

The plot was done pretty intricately! And I was in a book slump when I read this, so I was worried!! But it was very well done! You have the whole Renna/Respen stuff, Leith and the Blades, Jamie and Brandi. It was all so inter-connected, and wonderfully done overall!

Guys, I’m serious when I say this, I can’t pick a favorite book in this series! Usually, I can pick one that I LOVE, then all the others are tied for second. But with The Blades of Acktar (hereby known as TBoA. I know, SUPER hard to remember!), I can’t pick!
Something I found cool was that Brandi was a narrator in this book. When it was first her, I was slightly confused since in the previous two books, only Leith and Renna narrated (right?!), but I LOVED her POV!
brain-of-squirrel-quoteOnce you get inside her head, you can really tell just how deep of a character she really is; that she’s not just some super bubbly little sister. She’s so dimensional and deals with a lot of super hard problems.
Without giving too much away, there is a “Mulan moment” (well, two, and the first. one. pained. me. greatly.). So, needless to say, I was a little (or A LOT) worried that it’d be cliche, but, it wasn’t!! What joy! Okay, maybe it was a little, but I didn’t really feel it was so!
Don’t worry, it wasn’t only Brandi in this book!!
Renna. Ooooohhhh, Renna. She had some tough stuff going on! A few times I was squealing (though not from a Blade Faythe moment…) and was on the edge of my seat the whole time! Well, bed, I guess.
Guys, this had closure (which makes sense, since it was originally going to be the last in the series), which was nice, BUT I STILL WANT THE NEXT BOOK NOW. ACK.

If any of you guys are fans of Jaye L. Knight, then I can honestly say that you’d like this. While they’re different, Jaye and Tricia have similar writing styles (I’m just saying that, ’cause I know that some of my followers are Ilyon fans).

I loved this book. It was more intense than any of the ones before it. Woah… I’m still trying to get over what just happened. This book had me feeling like my heart was being ripped from my chest.
Leith Torren has left behind Renna Faythe in Nalgar Castle. Brandi is upset. She will take any risk to get her back. Who knows what will be done to her by King Respen? They flee towards the Resistance and away from the Blades. Leith only has one hope: that the Leader will help them somehow rescue Renna. But he knows that no matter what, he will return to Renna whatever the consequences.
The bond between Leith and Renna grew and strengthened in this book. The way they interact with each other was so sweet. Leith went through so much, I mean, so much just to protect Renna. It was very torturous to read, but I think it was vital to the story. He is no longer afraid to defy Respen. Renna is braver and stronger than ever before. She has even become a bit bold. She’s kind, but willing to stand up for herself. Martyn, oh Martyn. He will forever be a favorite. I loved how this story went with him, it felt more realistic and true. His loyalties are divided between his duty as a Blade and his friendship with Leith. Brandi goes through some tough stuff for a girl her age and I enjoyed seeing how it matured her. But she is still that adventurous and spunky girl. The Leader…let me just say, he is interesting, and not at all what I expected. He gives me a creepy feeling, but I kind of like him for that.
The pace was fast, really really fast. I love how the book started almost exactly where it left off. I was sucked in and on the edge of my seat the whole time. Boom boom boom! It never slowed down. There was maybe two or three “semi-peaceful” moments, but they never lasted for long. The decisions made by certain characters had me wanting to scream, “No! Don’t do that!”. The near to death experiences were thrilling. The battles were invigorating and moving. The book didn’t end with a bang, but with something more powerful and in a way more similar to real wars. Not everything is fixed and happy at the end, but I liked it that way and I’m betting the next book will set some things right.
Everyone who loves a good Christian fantasy book must read this. It’s not preachy and it doesn’t feel forced on the story. This is one of my favorite series and I hope that you enjoy it too.

OH. MY. GOODNESS.
I've been waiting so long to get my hands on this book and it did not disappoint. Like, where in the world do I even begin with this review?
Okay, let's start with Leith. There is a reason why everybody who ever reads this series falls in love with him and he is the source of major fangirling. Of course, Tricia already made him quite loveable, but then when Respen got a hold of him... Yeah that was not fun to read through *glares at author*
And oh my, what a plot twist! Keevan! Yeah I like him so much :) He just needs to go easier on Leith.
It was amazing to see Renna grow throughout the whole book, and how she stood strong. Although, I was SERIOUSLY concerned she was going to go through with (Spoiler): the whole 'marrying Respen' thing.
Brandi was probably, like, one of the major sources of angst for me. Growing up is painful, but when you have to grow up 'cause your sister is imprisoned and Blades are hunting you... *winces* yeah not fun.
Martyn is so amazing! Well, okay, I mean, not until the end... But I'm very excited to read his story in Deliver. It's interesting to watch him try to walk a thin line and then discover that he can't. Oh, and he saved Renna from Respen, so good on him there XD
I'm trying to fangirl as best I can, okay guys XD I'm not very good at it.
Seriously though, this series is amazing, the characters are adorable, and yeah, it's... It's one of those books that inspires you, and makes you want to go write on your own stories.

Spoilers for those who haven't read the first two books; other spoilers will be marked as such!
What can I say? This book was almost perfection. I don't THINK I liked it quite as much as I did "Deny," for inexplicable reasons, but it was still SO. FREAKING. GOOD.
This was Renna's book to shine, and oh my. She was so different from the girl we met at the beginning of Dare, but she was still the same person on the inside. I appreciated that--there wasn't so much change that she felt like a different character, but enough that she felt like a new person. The character arcs in this story are the best and I salute Tricia Mingerink for writing them. :)
Then there was Leith. My precious little cinnamon roll. He really got to shine in this one, too. He no longer has to live dual lives, and was very careful to "be HIM" in this book, which was WONDERFUL. God has done such a work in that boy, and he's so humble, so amazing. He hasn't lost all his resentment, so he's definitely not perfect, but his character that started out so flawed has really come a long way.
Then we had romance. I'll be honest, I wasn't as big a fan of it when it actually started happening as I'd been in the first two books when it was simply teased. It just felt like their whole relationship was really... fast. So anyway, yeah. I loved it... but it also OCCASIONALLY made me the tiniest bit uncomfortable. Most of the time, no.
BRANDI!!!! We got to be in her head in this book, and like the other characters, I was disappointed that she wasn't as happy and bubbly inward as she acted. But it makes sense. She is, after all, fourteen, and has seen almost everyone she loves die or leave. I was fourteen not too long ago. It's not all fun and games. :P Her arc may well have been the saddest of the three main characters' in this book. I teared up a few times.
And some of the banter was the BEST. I loved how even when Leith was in incredible pain, he could still (occasionally) joke around. The "we're making Martyn uncomfortable" thing made me laugh so hard. So did the part when Renna made Martyn wash the dishes. Honestly, I just love the way Renna treated Martyn in this one. He was such a deep and tragic character... but he was still used in the funniest ways. I laughed hysterically a couple of times, freaking my family out.
Despite war and torture, I felt like this book was a lot less violent than Deny. In that one, there were a lot of dead bodies and such, often described in great detail; Defy, however, had long war sequences, and a couple of parts at the end with war hospitals that were sad and tragic, but not in a turning-your-stomach-making-me-cover-the-page-with-a-hand-and-cringe kind of way, like a couple of parts of Deny.
Respen in this one too! Argh, I loved him. Rather, I guess, I loved to hate him. He was epic, at least as villains go. Ugh, his scheme in this one was probably pretty obvious from the beginning. But I totally missed it until he said it. Then I was like WHAT????????????????????
Speaking of Keevan:
Some of the romance, as mentioned above, was a little awkward for me, and there was just something about this one that wasn't as compelling as Deny. But we got the great new character of Ranson, which was awesome, and JAMIE... And don't forget Shad. Man, I love that dude.
Definitely one of my new favorite books! And I definitely recommend it!!!!!!!!

Wow--this was definitely my favorite installment in the series so far! So much depth and growth and change and all around wonderfulness... *sighs*
Renna was definitely my favorite character in this installment, which is huge considering I struggled to like her as much as I wanted to in the first two books! I love this new strength and peace in her, and I especially love it because it's not based in her own attitude or ability; it's entirely an outgrowth of her strengthened faith. It's as though she's finally become the girl I was sure she could be all along (and was previously rather frustrated with her for taking so long to get to)! I loved the way she seized every possible opportunity to fulfill what might have been her purpose in the castle. And when she started bossing Martyn around with her best Brandi impersonation--oh my! Those scenes were an unbelievable combination of heart-melting and hilarious. <3
Speaking of Brandi, even though it was hard to watch her struggles, I really liked her part of the storyline as well. It's as though her character needed the deepening that came with trials and doubt as much as Renna needed the strengthening that came with hope and purpose. And yet even though she may never be the same bubbly, carefree girl she started out as, I loved the way that the core of who she was didn't change--she's still the same spunky, independent, and fiercely loyal Brandi all the way through. And her forcing Jamie to teach her to fight ranks right beneath Renna and Martyn for my favorite scenes in the book. :)
Can I squeeze the rest of the characters into one paragraph? Should I even try? Martyn--my word! So much more complexity than I ever expected. The struggle between the duty that drove him and the remnants of his friendship with Leith was so well done! Leith's inner peace even as he struggled with the suspicion and anger of others was also really well done. A couple minor characters had some great glimpses of growth, while others just stayed the course as their own wonderful selves. (I'm looking at you, Shad and Jamie.) And how on earth do you manage to give someone as awful as Respen an actually human side without losing any of his awfulness?!? That was scarily well done!
Even though this book got bloody and nasty in places, I actually didn't have as much of a problem with it as in the last one. Maybe torture and battles are easier to handle than assassination and execution? *winces* Definitely not recommended for sensitive readers, though. And with some of the hints of what kinds of things might possibly go wrong even after peace is established, I'm very anxious to read Deliver. I sure hope things aren't as bad as certain people predicted they could become!

This series keeps getting better with each story! I already loved Leith before, but in this book… I never say this, but SWOON. His relationship with Renna really comes together here and it’s beautiful to witness. We also get Brandi’s POV, and her character growth is so satisfying. The way this book handles the topic of capital punishment from a Christian perspective is absolutely masterful, which added to my enjoyment as a theology nerd and a general fiction nerd. I already have book 4 on my Kindle and can’t wait to dig in. <3

Ahhh!! This book is amazing!!! The 3rd book in The Blades of Acktar series, Defy, picks up right where Deny (book 2) left off. Which means ... lots of action, right from the first page! (These books are not the kind that you can just pick up and read. You must start with the 1st book!)
I think this is my favorite in the series so far. The characters have come so far from the first book. Renna is learning what faith in the Lord truly means, Leith is struggling with the fact that he is still seen as a blade, as well as the the reality that there are two people back at the castle who he may have to choose between, and Brandi .. well, she's still Brandi!
Finding out who "The Leader" is was just ... ahhh!!!! I was so not prepared for that! And everything that happens with him. The other two books in the series where bad, but I was still able to keep my heart intact. This one literally tore it to pieces. So many things going on. There were times where I didn't think there was anyway it would end well.
I loved seeing Shad and Leith together, especially once they got to the Sheered Rock Hills. Shad's loyalty was so awesome, and I just so love their friendship! ^_^
And Martyn!! Oh, what to say about him? He's now officially my favorite character in the series. Seeing how he struggled between loyalty to Leith and loyalty to King Respen was so hard. He was a complex character, to be sure. He was bound by two loyalties, and he had to choose which one to honor. Oh, it was so hard to watch! (Err, read. ;))
And FINALLY in this book it seems like Leith and Renna realize they actually have an attraction for one another! Definitely a few very sweet, tender moments between the two! *insert fangirl squealing* I think my favorite line in the book was "We're making Martyn uncomfortable." Ohhhhh, yes!! Please make him uncomfortable. A lot! (No, it was not in a bad way! If you've read it, you know what I mean. ;))
All in all, it was AMAZING! Not that I was expecting any less. Seriously, these books are so good! If you haven't read them, than you need to!! :D

And Martyn!! Oh, what to say about him? He's now officially my favorite character in the series. Seeing how he struggled between loyalty to Leith and loyalty to King Respen was so hard. He was a complex character, to be sure. He was bound by two loyalties, and he had to choose which one to honor. Oh, it was so hard to watch! (Err, read. ;))
And FINALLY in this book it seems like Leith and Renna realize they actually have an attraction for one another! Definitely a few very sweet, tender moments between the two! *insert fangirl squealing* I think my favorite line in the book was "We're making Martyn uncomfortable." Ohhhhh, yes!! Please make him uncomfortable. A lot! (No, it was not in a bad way! If you've read it, you know what I mean. ;))
All in all, it was AMAZING! Not that I was expecting any less. Seriously, these books are so good! If you haven't read them, than you need to!! :D

Ah, yes. Defy. The book that broke my heart... And I'm not even kidding. For at least the last 1/3 or 1/4 of this book I was an absolute emotional wreck. (LIKE WHAT ARE YOU PEOPLE DOING TO MY PRECIOUS CHARACTER.)
I read this book in two days, starting it the same day I finished Deny. If I had to pick a favorite of the three books, it would be this one. (And no, not just because it's the last one I read. :P) There was just so much to love!! I loved getting to 'visit' Eagle Heights!!! How cool!! :D The part in the Waste, the parts in the castle, the near-ending in the Meeting Room. The war for Acktar. The leader. Honestly, I didn't know what to make of him at first. (Especially when he locked *blank* up!!! >_<) But he 'grew on me', I guess, and I turned out liking him in the end.
ALSO. This is the book where the romance that's been hinted at since the beginning actually begins to be obvious. And can I just say... It's perfect. The end. *smiles*
Finally! A book that didn't end on a horrific cliffhanger. XD I was so glad to actually find some happiness for the dear, sweet characters at the end of this one. The ending was very nicely done, yet not wrapping up everything so we still have some questions for Deliver to answer. ;)
(As with Dare and Deny, I'll give a couple cautions. This book, Defy, probably has the most blood and violence out of the series thus far. Especially towards the ending. Some torture, some descriptive battle scenes. Again, I would say pre-teen and up.)

My favorite book of the series. Well, two and three combined. It was very exciting, lots of things were happening and many characters were in peril! EEP! I need to re-read these.
I don't want to write a review with any spoilers, but let it suffice that the complexity of the plots of these books was amazing.

The Blades of Acktar series comes to a close....but as it turns out, that does not mean its the end of the story, expect more sequels or stories. However, this book is a very nice and well rounded close to the tense trilogy.
The idea of the story is great....an assassin in a special force under an evil king goes rogue after being saved by his enemies and must learn to walk the way of redemption.
Unfortunately, I really wish each book had gone through more drafts and a stricter editor, especially the last two. Some of the writing feels inconsistent with the time and setting, and the style is just a bit younger in feel than the subject.
That being said, Tricia clearly knows the way of a good story, and as this is her first series, her writing will only improve from here.
Throughout the series, the storyline is fairly predictable, and in most ways, that continues. But really, its predictable in ways you want it to be. And this time, there were also some twists or refreshing takes that I was not expecting. For example, The Leader does not follow the standard of his archetype, but has a personality and behavior fitting to his past. And Renna, who always seemed like your basic Christian good girl ended up wiser and more mature than I expected.
I'd recommend it to tweens and young teens who don't mind some violence, readers looking for a good Christian fantasy who don't have a evil editor living inside them, or anybody who loves everything Assassin and wishes there were more stories about them of redemption, rather than revenge.

One word: Intense. That was so intense I could barely stand it!!! It was amazing though.
Hmm still have some issues with oversimplification of some Christian aspects imo. Slight difference of belief. But that doesn't stop me from thoroughly enjoying this series, and I can't wait to read the next one!!

I grunt and groan as the plow I'm pushing grinds into the ground, forming yet another row of freshly upturned dirt. " I sure hope they appreciate this... oh, oh hi!! Don't mind me I'm just...*shove* arugh! planting...stuff. You're here for my review? Now? Seriously? *sigh* Fineee. It's time for a break anyway." I come and sit down against a tree and motion you over. "Come sit down. I haven't written up an official document yet with all the commotion that's been going on around here. Did you know...? Oh never mind that would be a spoiler. Well I guess it's about time I went into fangirl mode. OH MY GOSH WHAT DID I JUST READ LEITH, RENNA, BRANDI, PEOPLE AHHHH!!!! *ahem* Seriously though. If you've been following this series from book 1 you'll need to read this book. If you haven't read books 1 and 2 first THEN come and read this. To say it's amazing is an understatement. Why is it amazing? WHY?!?! Pftttt well obviously the answer is Leith but you're probably sick of that answer by now. The growth of his character throughout this series is absolutely amazing but I must say for this book in particular it's Renna who grows the most. We see her finally become fearless and step up and be the woman God created her to be.
Also, Brandi. I was terrified for her to be perfectly honest. Not only was she thrown into an awful situation (avoiding spoilers. If you've read book 2 you know what I'm talking about) but it CHANGES her. Changed Brandi is scary Brandi and I think what she lost what us readers came to love about her the most; her innocence. But the unique thing is I don't believe any of us love Brandi any less because she lost it. In fact I love her more. We see her grow, her faith is challenged and she learns to adapt to this new perspective of her world, much in the same way we do. I know the same thing happened to me at some point in my life as I know it must also have happened to every one of us. It's a part of growing up. Sad, but true.
Jamie has also stepped up in this book to become one of my favorite characters actually (although they're all my favorite). I totally ship him and Brandie. XD "Bramie" anyone? :P
The plot was..just...wow I'm still in awe of how well the author planned and sorted through every detail. I was so lost at times. Probably the most surprising parts of the plot though involve Renna and Daican. I won't say anymore though.
So yes, you should read this book. There are countless morals and biblical truths you can mine from it's pages and I personally have become richer for having found them. :)"

"Leith says he'd like me and you to help him with the horses and that Martyn can finish the plowing" Brandie finishes with a small grin at the dark form slowly making his way over to the plow. He doesn't grin back. Martyn's one of the only people I know who can resist Brandi's smile.
"Okay sounds good I'm finished here anyway." I get up and leave with Brandi, her waving at you as we climb the hill to the stables. Off on another adventure.

OH MY GOODNESS. OH MY GOODNESS. OH MY GOODNESS.
Finally found enough time today to finish the book and ahhhhh....it was SO good! So amazing. Sooooo gooooooodddddddd!!!!!!
'Kay so I cried. . . AGAIN. But I couldn't help it. I mean, POOR LEITH. How could Respen DO that to him?!?!? *glares*
And Renna and Leith *hugs them* So. darn. CUTE. THE ROMANCE FINALLY HAPPENED! I MEAN....FINALLY!!!!!!! *squeals* *grins* *squeals again*
And Martyn. I think, next to Leith, he's my favourite Blade. I really like the younger ones too, like Jamie, and Blane, and Ranson, but Martyn's just - got something about him that I love. He would be my favourite, except of course, there's Leith. Leith already stole that spot in my heart ;) But Martyn, poor boy. When Respen told him to kill Leith - INTENSE. I felt so sorry for him. But I'm sooooo glad he decided to choose Leith's side AND decided to stick around later instead of running off somewhere to never be heard from again (like someone in the Hunger Games *cough*)
All the twists in here...like Keevan (seriously I was just like o_O)...kept popping up - I could barely keep up with them.
And ... SPOILER coming (although I think we already knew this was gonna happen right?) When Respen died...I actually felt kinda sorry for him. Tell me that wasn't just me? I still hate what he did to Leith and I guess all the other Blades 'cause he basically ruined all of their lives, but those moments when he was remembering Clarisse in Renna...I dunno. I guess it kinda softened my perception of him. Kinda.
Totally in love with this book - me needs to read book 4 now. Pleaseeeeee ;)

Well, I was supposed to go to bed about an hour ago, BUT IT WAS WORTH IT. That ending was so satisfactory that I have the feeing that I'm going to be giggling with glee all day tomorrow. *sighs happily*

WOW!!!!! Just WOW!! This book is amazing!! I read Defy in like three days, while on vacation. Ok, I better get myself together. I LOVE IT!!! This was probably my favorite of them all. We get to read a lot about Brandi and lots on Leith, and Renna. I like Renna the best in this one. I never really loved Renna until I read Defy. Oh, and Martin! He is so awesome. There is so much action and adventure and everything awesome packed into this book. It's just amazing. I recommend it to ages 14-up maybe 13-up. I don't think it had as much gruesome scenes as Deny.
