Well, there’s a new monster in Hope City every day, I’m competing with countless other hunters and I’m trying to track down the man who killed my parents. On top of all that, I’ve got rent to pay, a cat to feed, and I’m pretty sure the local grocery store is haunted.
This is a crazy world we live in. Monsters roam the streets, vampires run nightclubs, necromancers sacrifice little girls. Somebody has to do something about it.
My name is Kat Drummond, and I’m a Part-Time Monster Hunter.
This boxset contains the first four books of the Kat Drummond Series: Part-Time Monster Hunter Blood Cartel Devil’s Gambit Necrolord The book also contains the short story Soul Bound as a bonus, detailing one of Kat’s earliest hunts and how she met her furriest friend.

“Not all wolves are monsters, they’re just different. And while some become beasts, they aren’t so different from humans. Some are good. Some are evil.” “Because we work together. Because we fight the darkness. Because, without us…all is lost.” This series is killing me! lol. I’m so wrung up I may bounce like a coil, so much tension, my lower lip is all chewed up! So much tension, cracking nerves, and nail biting, heart wrenching moments! A life of pain. Of sacrifice. But I also saw resilience, heroism. The grit that kept someone going, that makes you a human. Brett and Guy’s POV were excellent as Corps members, incorporated as a child soldier. A Corps created on vengeance to slay monsters and protect humanity, driven by despair, where every fight, every battle was only to get rid of the monsters, not taking into account the base nor morality of their actions. But, I can’t judge them, because each one of them were victims of their own tragic pasts. Brett has evolved beside Kat, leaving behind his hatred, his need of vengeance, learning and understanding that not all monsters and creatures from the In-between are evil, just like the humans, some are good and others bad. Nicholas Woode-Smith has captured the essence of what makes us humanitarian. He has totally captivated me. This series has no fillers, it’s a complete and engaging storyline, an exceptional world building, an exciting and thrilling experience. Each premise is impressive and worthy to read it. Needless to say I highly recommend this series!
Kat is an awesome character with a penchant for killing monsters, mostly dead ones. She also goes to college and does the slaying to pay the bills. Yup badass.
If you love a strong female protagonist this box set is just the ticket. Full of magic, chaos and humor. I enjoyed the authors writing style and look forward to reading more.
I love this series. I've read and reviewed the first books individually. This box set allows you to be totally immersed and binge read. High octane adventure, devious monsters and a resilient and resourceful protagonist. Kat has the help of a ghost, Treth the Paladin, in her head, the companionship of a cat, Alex, and Druer, a pixie, who took up residence after Kat caused the destruction of his home.
There are moments of light relief amid the gruesome business of monster hunting. Kat has also a sort of the mundane student life with her good friends, Trudie and Pranish.. The secondary characters are well developed, the world building evocative and the action realistically choreographed. Highly recommended.
Below are some of my reviews, so you can judge for yourself if you want to enter Kat's world.
SOUL BOUND Every picture tells a story - just how amazing is the cover of the prequel. Kat and Alex in the alley, Kat rescued Alex from Zombie dogs. This is a great stand alone introduction to Kat, Part-Time Monster Hunter, and Treth (Kat's inner knightly ghost ).
Kat is moving out of the home of Trudie, her bestie, and her foster parents, with whom she has lived since aged six when her parents died, and into a new neighbourhood. The land lady needs Kat to sign an indemnity exempting claims for infestations of evil spirits. Surprise, Mrs Ndlovu is correct. There are evil spirits in the neighbourhood. Enter Brett from Drakenbane Monster Hunting Agency with his black van blaring ACDC and the scene is set for future adventures.
PART-TIME MONSTER HUNTER I really enjoyed the world building, the atmospheric scene setting, the support characters (Trudie, Pranish, Duer, Brett, and Alex the cat), and most especially Kat Drummond herself, with her attitude and commitment. Set in Hope City, formerly know as Cape Town before the Vortex Rift opened in Siberia and disgorged magic and monsters into technological Earth. The rich retreated to magic protected enclaves and the monsters feed on the poor in the slums.Kat studies at the university and works part time to pay the bills. Kat discovers her monster slaying vocation when she slays a zombie while baby sitting. In her time of need in her first zombie battle, the spirit / soul of a medieval knight comes to her aid with advice. Treth of Concord, Knight-Paladin and Kat become soul bonded to continue their quest to slay monsters. Treth poses the question "what drives Kat to slay monsters? revenge for the murder of her parents by a necromancer or love for her friends to protect them?"
I love the monsters. As Kat moves from a small time free lance monster slayer to a celebrity, she studies the monsters and we learn the taxonomy and kill techniques. So well thought out. Kat's research covers zombies, ghouls, wraiths, night kin, abhorrents, banshees, gremlins, gheists, haunts, poltergeists, disturbances, demons, necromancers, wizards and pixies. Don't forget the ogres.
Highly recommended, suitable for YA as not too gruesome. Some unfinished business but no cliff hanger. Certainly the monsters aren't banished, so there is still work for Kat and more stories to come.
BLOOD CARTEL Blood Cartel is the second Kat Drummond, part-time monster hunter, story. This picks up after the court case, when Kat has been suspended from her job monster hunting.
Spoiler alert! Kat was acquitted of the murder (see book one for gory details) but considered a liability due her previous unauthorised actions. Shuffled off to solve a case of missing persons, Kat is soon embroiled in something bigger and more sinister.
Highly recommended, a must read for urban fantasy fans and lovers of kick-ass female protagonists. Kat is clever and resourceful. Enjoy.
Part-time Monster Hunter is an amazing book. It has a great storyline and characters. I love strong female characters and the author really delivered with Kat. She is a true kick*ss heroine with some serious skills and thanks to the assistance of Treth, her spirit sidekick, she is at the top of the game. This interesting tale is full of action, adventure, danger and suspense that will keep you hooked from beginning to end. In Blood Cartel Kat is back with her trusty spirit Treth, to take on more monsters and ghost. Unfortunately, things get put on hold when one of her friends goes missing. Kat will do anything to save a loved one even accept help from an enemy and moron. I thoroughly enjoyed this story, its amazing characters, twists, thrills, and a very interesting ending. In Devil’s Gambit Kat, after recovering from her ordeal with the vampire cartel, has been given another extremely dangerous case and now the hunter has become the hunted. Book 4 Necrolord, Kat is back and it’s getting messy. The Necrolord has gone too far and now the council is getting involved. Kat has been asked to assist the cops with catching the Necrolord and putting her down once and for all. Unfortunately, everything just got more complicated, Colin is moving in, a She-Vamp is out for revenge, her best friend boyfriend is in love with her, and the Necrolord wants to be buddies. These action- packed supernatural thrillers will have you on the edge of your seat. I was thoroughly hooked on its killer suspense, mystery, and twists. It is one series you don’t won’t to miss. Get this collection you won’t regret it.
I absolutely /love/ this series. The deeper I get into it, the better it gets. Here's what I have to say about the first four books:
1. Part-Time Monster Hunter I love the concept behind this book. Magic has entered the world. Magic and magical creatures have always been around in small quantities, but the barriers between our world and other worlds have fallen and now magic and magical creatures are everywhere. Kat is a college student that exterminates monsters in her spare time to make ends meet. Let the fun begin!
2. Blood Cartel Great sequel to _Part-Time Monster Hunter_! Oh, man, Kat is broadening her horizons. Not by choice, so much as circumstances at least somewhat beyond her control. If she keeps this up, and keeps coming out on top, she's going to be very in-demand. Either that, or dead.
3. Devil's Gambit Kat's not a detective. Sure . . . she keeps saying that. Then she goes and does lots of detective stuff. She might not think she's a detective, but she's getting pretty good at sleuthing. Now she gets to figure out who's killing off the mages protecting the city (and the world). For everybody's sake, let's hope she's successful.
4. Necrolord Things are getting real now. This series just keeps getting better and more intense! Kat is hot on the trail of a true monster (in human form), but other monsters are hot on her trail. It seems the hunter might have turned into the hunted.
I have read all the books individually and really loved them. Kat has developed and matured as the series has progressed. The side characters are well-developed as well and becoming her family. There is always a lot of action and wonderful story telling. The world is not too much different than ours with the same prejudice and greed. The characters face real world problems along with the magical monsters, and sometimes the real monsters are human. It is a very good series and one I recommend to anyone.
So, like the subject says I was pleasntly surprised. Why you might ask, well let me enlighten you.😁 The book has a strong driven heroine who has her own dark begining. Driven by a past she can't shake, a cadre of friend who care for and support her, and a villain that is truly worthy of a tormented hero. The twist and turns as you walk with her while she managers her life, college, and a burgeoning monster hunting career grabs and holds you. Without giving away spoilers, I will say generally if I revie a book that is a series and it hasn't already been over reviewed or made me go "erhmagerd!" at the end, I usually wait till the last book and review all of them. This one however is amazing, compelling, well edited (that's very important) and well worth reading twice (I know, I did). Now on to the next book!
*Update* So I've read the first 4 books now and all I have to say is WOW. The world building, the character development, unique setting.( Something paranormal not set in NYC or New Orleans for once ) The plot twists and character arcs were unexpected, ok one was expected. I won't give out spoilers but he's a douche😏. I've taken the time to read through some other reviews where some complain about cliff hangers at the end of books. Hello, it's a series. It's a hook there to keep you interested in reading so that you will pick up the next book to see what happens next. They used to do it in serial movies all the time. In my opinion this series so far is definitely a five star series!
Part-Time Monster Hunter (Kat Drummond #1): Very Good Start to an Intriguing New Series - Kat is a teenage in an alternate Earth type setting after a "magical" Cataclysm that made some people magic users and opened the "door" for creatures out of myth and legend to enter the world. Kat lost her parent in a horrific experience and now supports herself as a part-time monster hunter while putting herself through school. She tries to find a balance, but has issues that makes that difficult. Oh, and let's not forget the little "voice" in her head with ideas of its own. The world is well developed as are the characters. There were a few areas where wording or misunderstanding broke my focus, but that did not happen often. I did get a bit frustrated with Kat, but I think that's to be expected. I'm also leery of the potentially unfair things alluded to at the end, but that certainly won't keep me from reading the next book in the series.
Blood Cartel (Kat Drummond #2): Kat Still Impulsive and Questionable Judgement, But Growing and Maturing - I really enjoyed Blood Cartel, the second in the Kat Drummond series. Kat is ridiculously having to deal with consequences of the first book, but once past that, the story moves along. Kat questions and doubts many things, including her own abilities outside of being a "blunt weapon", but still tries, after a bit of hesitation, and we see her growing beyond being a simple hunter. She makes some new connections while strengthening some old ones. Sadly, not all her connections go favorably, but I expect there is more behind that story. In the end, Kat continues to develop and shows herself to be a natural leader that people trust, still a bit impulsive, but very loyal and determined to be better. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.
Devil's Gambit (Kat Drummond #3): Kat Continues to Develop Both Professionally and Personally - In Devil's Gambit, book 3 of the Kat Drummond series, Kat continues to grow and we learning much more about her backstory as well as those of several other characters. Kat again shows some extraordinary power, but still doesn't understand it or really have control. There are some interesting new characters, some good, some bad, and some undetermined. Kat is still showing doubts about her abilities beyond just stabbing, but hopefully moving past that. Also, she's developing some relationships and interested to see how that goes. Overall, a very good book and looking forward to the next in the series.
Necrolord (Kat Drummond #4): Darkest Yet of Kat Drummond Series - Our heroine, Kat, continues to develop and grow, this time as a leader and the hassles that go with that, and unfortunately, being a young woman. Despite hardships, she perseveres and we meet some new people and learn more about other people and entities. All that said, this to me was the darkest of the books so far and I was a little unhappy with the events at the end (no spoilers). Still, I enjoyed the book overall, as I have the series, and will be looking for the next one to be released.
These books have everything. Every kind of monster you can imagine and more. And they have the monster hunter, Kat. She is amazing and smart, funny and she's got a wicked sense of humor. I was so wrapped up n the stories, I forgot about the rest of the world. Excellent books and there is a fifth book.
The Kat Drummond Collection Box-Set: An Action Urban Fantasy Series (Books 1-4 + Bonus Material) by Nicholas Woode-Smith is a amazing box set. This amazing box set deserves more than 5 stars in my opinion and I just can not say enough I loved reading everyone of these books. I highly recommend this amazing box set to everyone who loves reading about urban fantasies.
This is a brilliant series of books. Following the life of a lass who to make a living and fund her university terms takes up ridding her beloved city of cruel and disgusting monsters. This is an absolutely amazing set of gripping books. I won't say any more for fear of giving spoilers and will finish with giving my complete and total recommendation for kat and her friends.
The first 4 books in the Kat Drummond monster hunting story for a ridiculous price! Would have snapped their hands off if I didn't already have them. As I said before and I'll say it again. This is urban fantasy at its finest in my humble opinion. Full of everything to like out monsters etc. Try them out, you may be surprised. Highly recommended.
Excelent Urban Fantasy Series This urban fantasy series is well written. Funny, full of adventure, excitement, monsters, battles through great characters. Well worth the read. I received the books free from the author and decided to review them
Hands down the best way to get started on this series! You’ll love Kat and the rest of the characters in her world as they battle through the challenges they face in each book. Definitely not a series to miss!
This book is definitely one of my favourites! I'm still reading my way to the latest book and it's only getting more interesting and intense.I'm completely obsessed with everything in the Kat Drummond universe, from the complicated romance to the terrifying monsters! Also, I need that coat!
This is a wonderful box set that is a great collection of stories. This set has action, adventure and lots of twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat to see where it will lead you! This is a must read collection and will give you hours of reading enjoyment!
Sorry for a short review, but I need to return this to download next book really quickly, series is that good and I have no space on kindle unlimited to do so. So, sorry, but brilliant, exciting, great characters and plot. Bye!
Kat D is so amazing, so much bravery and determination through tragedy and terror. Having good friends helps and finding many more does as well, vampires gods and many more monsters helps keep you wanting more.
This is an amazing box set!!! It has great characters and storyline. A wonderful fantasy journey full of action, suspense, mystery, magic and paranormals. I love this series of Kat Drummond. You will be wanting more when you finish this collection, I know I do.
Part-Time Monster Hunter: Set aside a full day for this finely-crafted battle of good vs. evil which explores the meaning of friendship. I read an ARC and this voluntary review is my own opinion.
The Kat Drummond Collection Box-Set: An Action Urban Fantasy Series (Books 1-4 + Bonus Material) A strong female protagonist in this series is just the ticket! I love this series, and gobble up the books as soon as I can.
I loved these books! Kat continues to grow and evolve through each book. She starts with zombies and starts slaying monsters of all kinds. I couldn't put this box set down! I just finished the last book and all I have to say is everything I thought I knew was soooo wrong! Do yourself a favor and get the next book because you'll want it ready! I also reviewed each book individually if you want to look for more specific reviews.
Badass? Fascinating? All that and More. Monsters? Magic? what else do you want? If you find time to eat in between the books, well done. Loved the series. Thanks Nicholas, really good read.
I only gave this four stars instead of five because of the cliffhanger endings. (I really hate cliffhanger endings). I give the author full marks for creating a complete world. He manages to fill in the backstory without an info dump. Kat is smart, sometimes funny, with a kind heart and she overcomes her very realistic fears at being non magical in a world where the majority of the people she meets (friends and enemies) have the magic abilities she lacks. FYI this definitely has to be read in order or you will never figure out what is actually going on with the numerous subplots.
Kat Drummond Collection (Part-Time Monster Hunter, Blood Cartel, Devil's Gambit, Necrolord, & Soul Bound) by Nicholas Woode-Smith are the first four books and a short story in the Kat Drummond Series. These are excellently written, have fantastic storylines, and the world building is amazing. Kate is a college student who moonlights as a monster hunter to pay for college and make ends meet. She has a ghost attached to her who helps her in this endeavor and a great group of friends. If you enjoy a great story with lots of action and well-developed characters, then you will love this series. I highly re commend it.
The eternal battle. GOOD vs. EVIL. The evolving story as Kat grows to become a warrior to defeat EVIL.
With well developed characters Kat grows stronger as she gains wisdom and finds her path is littered with pit falls making it harder to remain GOOD and not tarnished with EVIL. A story as old as time yet presented with skill and such thoughtfulness you want to cheer for Kat as you keep reading to see how the story ends.
