Before she is able to grasp that she will not see her parents again, she must leave her home and her beloved sisters behind...
After the sudden and unexpected death of her parents, Susanna, a beautiful English girl, finds herself under the protection of her uncle, who seeks to betroth her to the man that best serves his own interests.
That man happens to be William Baxter, a devilish handsome Highlander, whose colossal body indicates that he spends his days training and working outdoors. The exact opposite of what Susanna dreamed of as her husband.
Susanna leaves England and her two beloved sisters behind to travel to the Baxter castle, where instead of a warm welcome, she finds an unpleasant surprise. William has been married before, and his heart only has room for his late wife and Flora, his sweet young daughter.
Unfortunately, Susanna realizes that William got remarried mainly to acquire the dowry and the alliance with her uncle, as his clan is in a dire situation, and not as an effort to rebuild his life.
Alone in a hostile place, Susanna feels unwanted. But when secret forces and enemies threaten William, she will be there to prove that the quality of her character is such, that she cares even for those who seem to reject her at first.
"Highlander's Unwanted Bride" is a standalone story by best selling author Ann Marie Scott, packed with passion and romance and redemption, set on the beautiful backdrop of the Scottish Highlands.
Personal opinion alert but I really hate stories where the hero was married before, she dies and he pledges to never love another. But then he marries someone else and they all say that the first wife is in Heaven looking down and happy for him. I am a first wife and there is no way on God's green earth that I would be smiling and saying 'oh good. Look what his doing to her in our bed. I am so happy for him. ' ' oh look , they are up against a wall having s@x. I'll just watch for awhile!'. What the heck? I hate this trope. And of course he falls in love with the heroine and wants her more than any other woman he has ever had. I'd be up in Heaven and I would not smile and nod, I would totally be thinking of how I could hurt him without going to he!!. I just find this preposterous. Even Geese mate for life. They don't remarry. I just find this storyline unpalatable. Okay my rant is over.
This book was good and it had a woman marrying a laird and he has a child from his first wife who died in childbirth. He has not touched a woman since and he swore an oath that he would never love another. But wait he can still remarry and have s@x. ( Not a problem. My dead beloved will not care! Okay personal opinion alert again . It keeps rearing its ugly head!) On the wedding night he gets drunk and has no finesse and consummates the marriage and hurts the heroine badly. Then he calls out his wifes name, several times after he had passed out. (Now that was special. Great wedding night!) He eventually redeems himself and the heroine is a good person and she forgives him.
In the meantime there is trouble afoot. Some bandits are trying to kill the laird , his sister, his new wife and are destroying the property. They can't find them. (Okay personal opinion alert, I was really thinking it was his dead wife paying him back for the I will never love another and the nodding and smiling from heaven comment but I digress.) They eventually find the outlines and they declare their undying love for each other. (So much for his 'oath of never loving another') As I said I really hate this trope so pardon my rant. It is good and I will read this author again. I like that they are free and in KU and short. And so far all the heroes are faithful. (Not to the dead wife though! Sorry snarky POA again. I can't stop her)
In conclusion, I have decided wherever, whenever I goest , my husband goest with me!
This book was so out of touch with its time period, it was ridiculous! First off, they didn’t have “leather couches” in the “parlour” in medieval Scotland, nor did they have crayons.....just two very glaring examples of how this book was written. In real time They were lucky if they had benches to sit on or wooden chairs....a real luxury was a bench with a cushion on it! Even phrases she used were 21st century phrases...WTH? The characters were anything but medieval, too soft.....they’d never survive. Hero was wimpy and she was.....well, I’m not sure what she was. Just not at all what I expected.....sad, really sad. No recommendation here, sorry.
This book is terribly written. The historical accuracy is so off. One minute the author has the Scots talking like Scots and the next they are speaking regular English. It is not consistent at all. Susannah’s father is called Oliver in the first couple of paragraphs of the book and then a few pages later his name is Jeremy. The author flashbacks to some guy called Simon who has heard that Susannah is an heiress, but he hasn’t ever met her. The very next paragraph, they are in love, but she realizes Simon is a terrible person out to get her money. This part has no bearing on the rest of the story. William is described as a big warrior, but then whines about a small cut from an arrow and wants to hide in the castle. Susannah, unlike most women of her time, is the hero in everything. She has even been trained in special defenses right out of the blue by a character barely mentioned in the book. This would have never happened in this time period. The character development is extremely poor. The only way this is a best seller is because it is so cheap or even free. I won’t be reading any further books by this author.
This book was so disappointing, I was so hoping i would love it as it is a typical me book. However it was too fast pace. First chapter he is only marrying to save his clan and give his daughter a mother, he says he will never love anyone like his first wife. By the 2nd chapter he is madly in love and will do anything for her. It is the ending I would love but it needed to be less rushed and more of a storyline.
I won’t restate what other one and two star reviewers wrote, they pretty much covered it. Not the worst book I’ve attempted to read, but the writing and lack of any depth to the characters made it too painful to continue past the 4th chapter. I’m very suspicious of all the 4/5 star ratings.
This book had a good idea for the plot but it was very poorly written. The characters were not well developed and seemed to have no congruity with their actions. I understand that characters are not one dimensional but this was all over the place. I always finish reading a book but I couldn’t force myself with this one.
Trite, formula written story using sex for lack of plot
One dimensional characters have some redeeming details but overall this story doesn't have enough glue to keep it together. Fortunately it is somewhat short.
I was hoping that the author would play the angle of a grieving husband with his new wife. It's seems that all the relationships in this book move quickly.
I am impressed with the lead female character Sussana. At nineteen she is mature for her age. She is a beloved daughter and wonderful big sister. After she is betrothed to a Scotsman she only met once. She is brave, sad but brave. After an unwelcoming new sister-in-law and a brutal wedding night, she takes the high road and does not feed into the negativity around her. She is definitely no soppy milquetoast maiden. She is intelligent and strategic. She picks her battles and is fiercely loyal; a lioness to defend those she cares for. She is the type to sacrifice her own wellbeing for the life of a loved one. Just because she is a lady, polite and gracious, she is no push over. She is a wonderful character. I would have given this a 5-star rating but there was one serious point I found unrealistic. Her wedding night was a debacle and the husband was to blame. I just wonder why she did not feel traumatized, hurt, angry or disillusioned at what happened. The husband was ashamed of himself as he had too much to drink and asked for her forgiveness and she gave it freely and even looked forward to the next coupling. I have my doubts and I feel any maiden at that young innocent age would have had a difficult time with it. Other than that, this is a wonderful romance between two strangers who get to know each other and deal with the subversive problems at the castle and the outside band of thieves destroying property, stealing livestock, even murder and kidnapping. A very good read. I do recommend it.

The book reads very simplisticly, similar to a children's fairy tale. There are some continuity problems, too. At this time in history, glass was highly valued and would never be thrown away. Bottles would be reused over and over and broken bottles melted down and reblown. I thought the character of Susanna, a young woman mature for her age, because her mother had died, leaving her to run her father's household. However, her acceptance of her awful circumstances was a little over the top.
Highlander's Unwanted Bride will hold you spellbound as it comes to life with all the intrigue that will keep you captivated from the moment you begin the journey with Will and Susanna until the very end. The plot brims with tension-building twists and misfortune, witty banter, characters are well thought out and each one comes across clearly as their individual personalities become more than just part of the tale which brings this read together perfectly. with setting descriptions and action sequences are wonderfully vivid which brings this read together perfectly. Ann Marie Scott spins a heartfelt love story that unfolds beautifully with drama, sizzling passion, intrigue, uncertainties, secrets, danger, deception, trials and tribulations, and while the suspense builds and tensions escalate with the twist and turns abound that makes this one outstanding story!
>Book Review – The Highlander’s Unwanted Bride >I am an independent reviewer. This book is a medieval, Scottish romance with an HEA. Susanna is given in marriage to a grieving Scottish laird. Will has sworn to never love another after his wife died in childbirth. There are a lot of missing scenes where Will and Susanna discover kindness in each other. Will is brutish on his wedding night, but apologetic and kind to Susanna after. There is no real spark with Will and Susanna. Will never has any type of epiphany that his heart is able to love Susanna and his dead wife. >This book is appropriate for an adult audience. I am giving this book 3 stars. The story tries to be exciting, but even with the kidnapping of Susanna, Will gets to her rather quickly and the conflict is over. The characters need to be developed a lot more.
Ann Marie Scott was a new to me author as I read this book 📕. I love a story about a Scottish Laird & a Bonnie Lass. This story was so interesting and exciting that I read it in one sitting albeit it’s a quick read I was entertained throughout. There was steamy 🔥🔥🔥 romance strong kind characters of the H & h. There were villains and attempted murder because of a unhappy clan that they believed were wronged by H Grandfather in the past. There was a mole in the house of the H until they ferreted her out. The H & h had an arranged marriage at the beginning that with time turned into true Love with a HEA. I throughly enjoyed this book 📕 and will continue to read the to rest of the series. I recommend this.
It’s not the best written book, I have read fan fictions with more depth, however that being said I mostly enjoyed the story. It was what I needed during the busy Christmas period just to turn my mind off a little bit and enjoy something easy and light. I agree with other comments the book being a bit too fast paced and also a bit predictable - but sometimes this is exactly what you want. The end was a bit rushed but I enjoyed most of the story still and I recommend this book for an easy beach day read or when you would really just watch reality tv after a busy day.
This book doesn’t want much but to entertain you a little bit and that it did.
When Susanna’s parents died her uncle her and her two sisters guardian. She was 19 and uncle found a husband for her. Of course she is English and she went to a highlander. He had been married before but his wife had died in childbirth so he was raising a daughter now 5. Susanna and she got along well. Things were happening that no one new why. Dead rabbits, torn dresses and bloody shirts. Susanna was taken by bandits but was saved by her husband. The bandits believed they were to have the castle and lands for themselves.
I am used to authors doing thorough research for a book. This one is really inaccurate. Illiteracy, house management, hiring out of clan, references most cannot write or read, ....and deer herds close to the castle? People worked hard, married young, needed guards on the road, and died in their early thirties. I love accurate details woven in to make a story realistic. This good story is missing this important element Just give our hero a cellphone and briefcase.
A strong, beautiful English woman breaks barriers to find love and happiness in Scotland
The main character, Susanna, is smart and strong. She is as beautiful inside as she is out. What impressed me the most is how she met hostility with kindness and patience. However, she was no wimp; selflessly saving the life of her new husband's daughter she won the hearts hardened against her.
I enjoyed the story. It starts with Susanna traveling from England to Will's castle in Scotland to marry. When her carriage gets stuck in the mud, she has to walk in the rain and mud two miles to get to the castle. So begins the trials she faces to living in the castle with a new husband, a child she knows nothing about and a sister in law that hates her.
Highlander's Unwanted Bride: A Steamy Scottish Medieval Historical Romance
Suzanne and her sisters had such a peaceful life until their parents had a far race accident and died, then their uncle had custody of them . Unfortunately, he was not particularly interested in what the girls wanted to do with their lives, but , who would bring the best advantageous marriage for each girl. More power for him, eventually. This was a great read!👍👍
Well, if both the h parents died on the first page of the book the reader could expect some sort of explanation. He married her for her dowry. Was it in the carriage that she left stuck in the mud? If he needed it so bad why wasn't he doing anything with it? His drunk, rough consummation was quickly forgiven and she was hot for his body after that. No serious descriptions, no historical context, no surprises. Lots of sex though.
Disappointed. It was okay, but lacking a story really
I have read 3 books previously from this author and given 4 star reviews, but this one was hard to get through. The story didn't grab me and the feelings felt rushed and Hallow. I usually enjoy this author, but this story, not so much.
This was a good storyline. I liked Susannah. Some parts were missing but I recommend it. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾I didn’t want to write anything else.
It was a sweet story but nothing extraordinary. I started it before realizing it was a medieval romance, but I finished anyway. It isn't very steamy, in case anyone is worried about that. It's my fault for not reading the title closely. I noticed it sounded like a marriage of convenience story which I enjoy.
Great hero and heroine. My only disappointment is that the story went so fast and was so short. I enjoyed reading it so much but would have loved for the author to develop more of the story.. I look forward to reading more by this author.
I love books like this. Against all negativity, Susanna is positive and even though he lost his first wife, Will doesn't let that stand in the way of his new marriage and giving it a chance. Also liked the development of the characters and story line.
There is nothing that irritates me more than getting into a book and then finding out it's a shorter story. I was really starting to like the characters but it felt a little rushed to me. I need the characters to have a bit more depth.
Love the twist and turns this story takes! Not too much dialog to fill the pages but more than is for my liking. I recommend this story and off to the next. Happy reading!
What a great story about a marriage of convenience turning to love. Will and Susanna went through many trials before realizing that they had both found love. A great read.
