Roark Miller protects people for a fee. A substantial one. It’s a fair exchange. His expertise in security for their money. Socialites. Diplomats. Famous athletes. He doesn’t ask questions once the check clears. No matter how screwed up the job gets, it’s still less stressful than his days as a homicide detective in Detroit. Roark had blurred the lines between right and wrong too many times to pick up his badge again. But his past won’t stay buried for long.
Demi Kay finds herself choking on a cloud of body spray in a bar crawling with college-aged kids. It was meant as a night of celebration but turns quickly to a nightmare she can’t wait to escape. The only silver lining is the attractive bodyguard who looks equally disappointed with the establishment.
Roark and Demi find they have far more in common than their mutual distain for the party scene. When Roark realizes Demi is a victim from a case he’d consulted on a decade ago, he knows trouble is just around the corner. Mysterious threats turn to violence and Roark is the only thing standing between Demi and danger. But will he be enough?
Writing is a way to make a lot of different people do exactly what you want them to do. When I can’t get my toddler to listen to me, I turn to my characters. They always cooperate!
I currently live in Charlotte, North Carolina with my husband and seven year old son. I have perfected the ability to write in a noisy house and create story lines while folding laundry.
Ten Things to know about me:
1. I have a fear of whales. All whales. The noise they make. The sight of them (even on tv). I don't think this phobia has a name and I've never met anyone else who feels this way. I blame it on the 3D movie when I was 7 at the Boston Museum of Science. (Thanks Dad.)
2. When I get hungry it brings out the worst in me. My friends and family know to keep me well fed. They pack snacks now.
3. I can cook but not bake. Not even a little. Not even a box of brownies.
4. If there is a song I like it is normal to hear me listening to it a hundred times (give or take) in a row.
5. I do not, under any circumstances, read directions. Who has time for that? Making mac & cheese by the seat of my pants for the last 25 years.
6. Like a black-out drunk, I have lost hours of my life mysteriously to Pinterest. If you haven't tried it yet... don't. Save your self.
7. Before I became a mother, lots of things grossed me out. Now nothing does.
8. My favorite food is food... my least favorite food is no food. I love food. (apply the same rule to wine)
9. I do not have a green thumb. I have the kind of thumb that kills any type of plant ever given to me. Whatever kind of thumb that is... I have it.
10. Writing has changed my life. Not just the career it's created but the way I feel when I write. If you have something you love to do I hope you get the opportunity to do it.

Paraphrased, but: if he could get the city lights in the rearview mirror, he had a chance to save the girl. The End. The only reason it got a two was because it wasn't a bad story without many editing glitches, otherwise it would have been a one. On the other hand if you are bound and determined to read the whole story and don't mind buying book one, two and however many there are, then go ahead. With that understood, 3 1/2. CLIFFHANGER.
A nurse becomes the target of the Russian mob. Good thing her love interest is a hot security specialist. Ex-cop Roark avoids relationships but he is touched by Demi. He also thinks she is someone else. Unfortunately, so do some vicious killers.
This is a quick if somewhat melodramatic read. I could have lived without all the jealous cop angst and didn't quite buy into the romance. But it is fast and kind of fun. The ending is one of the abrupt, to be continued variety. 2.5 stars
This was a well written story of an ex cop who protects people for a fee. When he meet a woman while working with a different client he notices things about her that seem familiar. He knows her from a previous police case he worked on, but she gives a different name. He ends up working for her next and there is a mutual attraction. But now someone wants her dead. Can he save her and will they end up together or will it all fall apart? Highly recommended.
A great story… And then it stops right at a critical point. Series books that end in cliffhangers should have a warning. I hate cliffhangers that always make me feel like the author is coercing me to buy the next book. I dislike it so much that I don’t buy another book in the series and never find out what happens. I guess that’s biting off my nose to spite my face rather than hurting the author, but it’s the principle of the thing.
This is a fast paced book involving a mistaken identity and threats on a young woman’s life. And ex-cop rescued her from the first who intended her harm, in the plot unfolds with more complications and more attempts on her life. It’s a short read, but the characters are well developed and you actually cared what happened to them. This is the first book in a series. A reader will get a conclusion to this part of the story so you do not have to read the second book.
what i love doing ...when you find that the (good, great, exciting, fun, holds you interest, etc. kind of) reads are low ...head on over to Bookbub ...i love it. i tend to look for the freebies. this was one then headed to Amazon and grabbed it up. fun read. will read more from this series. 2 more ...so far. i am new to DS. fun times finding new authors to me.
Oh my gosh. This book made me laugh, stare by the window, be on high concentration when outside, and paranoid. This is a typical thriller with a touch of romance but I like the writings very much. I like how the author described things. I love how she put words together. The end is a cliffhanger though, but I'll be reading the next book asap
Another great story by Danielle Stewart. She really knows how to build intrigue in her writing and has the reader wanting more. Her endings make you want the next book right now. This is going to be an awesome series.
A good read for people who are in to the series recommend highly can't wait for the next one of the series a really enjoyable read but quick shaping up to be a enjoyable series must read the next one of the series
This kept me interested in knowing what comes next. I thought I had the story figured out and about that time a twist changed things. After reading this, in encouraged to check out the next book and the other series by this author.
This book kept you on your toes until the end. Lots of action and suspense. Loved the main character Roadie even with all his flaws. Can't wait to read the next book and see what happens between the main characters.
I get it's part of a series, but the only thing concluded was discovering the familial relationship. Just my opinion, but there's too much left unknown, unresolved.
Absolutely loved the book but it felt very rushed. It’s only 22 chapters which is really short considering how long each chapter is. And the cliffhanger ending just to get you to buy the second book? Hate that but will I buy it anyway, yes yes I will
The story was fast moving. The relationship between Demi and Roark was well developed and interesting with challenges. I desire to protect at all costs.
I was so disappointed when I reached the end of the book. I wanted it to go on and on! "The Way Down" captured me right to the end with the reality of emotions experienced by both the main characters. And the suspense has hardly started, so I will surely choose to read the follow-up book 2.
It's one of those not bad but not amazing books. Just left me meh and in no hurry to pick up the sequel. It ended really abruptly...like I was certain some pages were missing
You can't help but wonder about the future of these two amiable people as you read this incredibly exciting and compelling story about how they met and became acquainted!
This book started slow, and then as soon as I started getting into it, it finished. Cliffhangers annoy me but I get it, however this was more than a cliff hanger.
Roark recognises the victim from a crime that took place 10 years ago and finds that she is being threatened now. I enjoyed the twist late in the book.
