A Shot at Gold

Rate this book
Elodie Booker was a phenomenon. No one had ever taken the sport of archery by storm the way she had. Trophies and accolades piled up around her even in her first years in the sport. Then, something terrible happened. She lost the only father figure she had ever known after losing person after person in her life. It was the proverbial straw breaking the camel’s back, and Elodie left the game, never looking back.

Madison Fletcher was the next big thing in the sport of archery, or at least, that was what she thought. She was about to turn twenty-three, just graduated from college, and needed a new archery coach. Madison knew there was only one person she could reach out to; one person to take her all the way to the Olympic games. The only problem was that Elodie Booker was now a thirty-three-year-old lawyer who wanted nothing to do with archery and hadn’t fired a single shot since she had lost her own former coach.

Madison had known loss, too. Her loss was a different one, but it was still something that could unite them in their pain and understanding. If she could convince Elodie to give her a chance at being the archery star Madison knew she could be, she might also be able to convince Elodie that they were meant to be much more than coach and athlete.

Content warnings: loss of father figure, loss of loved one, alcoholism, anxiety

“You’re not a terrible coach. You were just not meant to be mine because you were meant to be so much more.” — Madison

A Shot at Gold was a very emotional read for me but I don’t know why. I have never lost anyone close, and yet I still felt every bit of the main characters’ lingering pain and understood all their insecurities stemming from their losses.

Madison Fletcher (22, lesbian) knows what she wants, and she isn’t afraid to ask for it. She also knows that she can make it to Olympics archery events. When Madison realizes Olympic gold medalist Elodie Booker (33, lesbian, anxiety) is not going to coach at the camp she signed up for, she does everything to convince the now-lawyer to train her. But Elodie is haunted by the loss of her coach and is not ready. And Madison is still figuring out what life means after losing her girlfriend Wiley to leukemia almost three years ago. Sharing experiences of loss and love for the sport, they connect well emotionally and professionally, but neither expects to fall for each other.

There are a lot of things I love about Maddie and El's story. The most beautiful thing is that they bring out the best in each other, and continue to do so even in the epilogue. Both of them have lost people they loved, and that deeply impacts their relationship with archery as well as each other.

“After I lost Wiley, I put everything into my sport. It’s all I have. And I will give you everything I can if you help me be the best.” — Madison

Madison needs the training to fulfill her dream, but Elodie cannot bring herself to touch a bow again. I love how Madison is always so sure of herself and also sees through Elodie’s indifferent façade. She is sometimes questionably manipulative, but I think it is because she see things with clarity and cannot stand Elodie’s avoidance of her own passion. Note that Elodie did not need fixing, despite what the wording in the story might have said. This is not about fixing anyone, but about learning to let go even when it is terrifying.

Then there is the story of Maddie and Wiles. They are the saddest and sweetest young adult couple ever. I think it is nice to acknowledge possible mature relationships between teens without dismissing them as something that wouldn’t last, even though for Maddie and Wiles, death had cut their time together short.

“When your girlfriend is dying, you talk about them a lot because you know you’re never going to have them. It’s the only way you’ll ever think about or talk about kids you’ll never name or watch grow up. It’s the only way you can get through the awful treatments and terrible side-effects. You talk about the wedding you’d have, picturing saying, ‘I do,’ and you fantasize about the honeymoon where the only thing you’d worry about is which drink to order on the beach or about the fact that you need to leave the room and take some pictures so that people don’t think you just had sex the whole time.” — Madison

Throughout the story, Maddie can be annoying and pushy sometimes while Elodie is very frustrating by sending mixed signals. They are both very stubborn. I love that Madison is extremely driven and Elodie trying very hard to break free of her grief. There are a lot of vulnerable moments going on, and I am happy there were no miscommunications between the pair. Madison is always very vocal about her thoughts, and Elodie also talks about everything she has already admitted to herself.

I love how I can feel the sexual tension even when Madison and Elodie are just talking and haven’t figured out their feelings for each other. There are also a few anger-induced actions from both parties that are so relatable. Pyland didn’t even try to make the characters perfect because no one is. I also want to point out that Madison’s last name is Fletcher. I don’t know if Pyland constantly chooses names to reflect a character’s profession, but I will surely pay more attention from now on. And while there were mentions of Robin Hood because of the archery theme, there were no Cupid jokes.

This book incited strong emotions in me and I love that I was able to feel everything while reading. I also love that the idea of having a loving relationship being having someone to share all the good and bad in life with permeates through the story.

“It’s the person you love who holds you at night, walks beside you, and makes winning those medals worth it.” — Robin

The epilogue was a little bit of an info dump of what happened over six years, but we get more of Madison and Elodie’s story in very limited pages so I am not complaining. The story actually develops a little further and leaves space for imagination, not about their happily-ever-after, but about their personal goals. Also, since A Shot at Gold has nothing to do with the first book Always More , you don’t need to read them in order.

With this one being my seventh book by Pyland, I have yet to see non-white main characters and trans/nonbinary/genderqueer side characters. Maybe there are some in other books I haven’t read, but I would love to see a little more diversity in her works.

A Shot at Gold might be difficult to read if you have lost loved ones, but Madison and Elodie’s relationship development is so real and beautiful that I just ache for more. If you feel in need of a good emotional release, this book will definitely do the job and give you so much more.

I have read a few review about this book and yes it is another awesome book from Nicole Pyland! It was easy reading for me..The storyline was not too heavy and plus it’s interesting too..She did a good study about sports, in this book it’s all about archery in the Olympics games. It’s really worth reading it!

I am a HUGE Nicole Pyland fan. I love her books. I was looking forward to A Shot at Gold and I have to admit it is not my favorite Pyland book. I liked the theme and I liked the pace of the book. I did not like Elodie and that took away from my reading experience. I did really like Madison. I found her more mature than Elodie. I also really didn't feel the chemistry between the characters like in Pyland's other romances. Pyland did turn this around for me around 70%. Anyway, I am like always looking forward to the next one and will read it as soon as it comes out. 3.75 stars.

I was really happy to see this book scheduled for release. Strangely as someone who loves lesbian sports romances and as a former archer I'd never considered that I needed the combination, but wow, this is a great book that is going to be hitting my to re-read pile. I'm a big Pyland fan anyway, but the books just keeping getting better and better. If I didn't have so many others to read I'd start it again straight away.

The archery language is spot on, you get just enough to understand the intricacies of the sport, to make it interesting, but not to overwhelm you with jargon. The passion both MCs have for the sport in their own ways really shines through and I was happy to see that it factored heavily into the HEA.

Both characters enter the storyline carrying hurt from their pasts and Pyland writes about both their own individual journeys, and the journey of their relationship beautifully. The portrait of love and loss is balanced so well I found myself relating easily to both MCs and was rooting for them to get together from an early stage.

Whilst the book is the second in a series, it's a standalone with regards to characters and storyline, so if you haven't read the first (you should, it's also fantastic), don't let it stop you giving this one a read.

What a fantastic age gap story! Both Elodie and Madison have demons they're fighting. Both had major personal losses. Madison knew she wanted Elodie as her archery coach and fought hard to get her. Can they be united to help Madison get to the Olympics? Will they find love? You'll need to read it to find out. You won't be disappointed! 5 stars!

Amazing, I think archery is awesome but it's not a common sport here, the images that the story put on my mind even warmed my heart, I can only imagine how amazing all of that must be.

I love the couple, Madison is really mature for her age, but going through all that really can make you grow up faster, and Elodie, oh my God, I wanna hug her and never let her go.

They are the perfect couple, and I really enjoyed that the focus was on them and their relationship, I got really into it.

F/F slow burn - hot in the end

Madison Fletcher is a quiet, hardworking, determined young lady with a single goal in life -- to win an Olympic gold for archery. Already a national champion, she believes that the right coach can make her Olympic-ready and to Madison that coach is Elodie Booker. When she was competing, Elodie had transcended the gender divide and was known as the best archer in the world. After winning a clutch of medals, culminating in an Olympic gold, Elodie disappeared from the scene post the death of her coach.

Almost a fairy tale, but it had me hooked right from the start. Nicole's an excellent story teller who keeps the tale fresh right to the end - and she writes a good ending! Knew nothing about archery so a bit of education. Loved it.

I love the sport of archery and this book has some great information about it. Madison is a talented athlete in the sport wants to become great. Elodie was great and now hides from what she once loved. Thanks to Madison’s persistence Elodie picks up a bow again. They have a lot of pain in their past which they need to work through. Watching their love unfold was very sweet. I really enjoyed reading about their journey to get to the Olympics. The epilogue to this story was so good. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.

Two broken hearts mending

Nicole Pyland does an amazing job with her pairing of MCs. Although the losses are different they both are on the mend and Nicole handles it perfectly. The chemistry is off the charts and low angst. I look forward to more by this author.

I don’t know how the writer does it but every book I’m instantly hooked. Chemistry is nice, and the character development is good even though the story is short compared to other books.

Nice to learn things about archery as well.

2.5 stars, hea book, I normally am a fan of this author but this book falls short in her collection. It is a little too much instalove for my tastes & unnecessary angst. Others may rate higher, free on KU.

So, this book took me by total surprise. I don't know anything about archery, and, if I'm honest, I didn't know how interesting I would find it. But OMG, I absolutely loved this book.

El and Madison were both slightly broken and the vulnerability they showed, and the raw emotion the story itself provoked, had me hooked. I couldn't get to the end fast enough. This book had engaging and believable dialogue and a realness that I enjoy in my books. This book was about so much more than just being a competitive athlete. It was about redemption, forgiveness, perseverance, and love.

If you only read one book by this author (which is not my suggestion because I have enjoyed almost everything she has written), I would definitely make sure A Shot at Gold is the one you choose.

“‘Don’t you get what a bad idea this is?’ Elodie asked, trying to reason with her. ‘Don’t you get that I’d choose you?’ Madison asked back. ‘I’d choose you over all of this, and that’s the biggest thing in the world to me. I’ve never put anything over archery. I never even planned to. I’d pick you over all of this,’ Madison repeated and motioned with her hand to the space around them. ‘Good night, Elodie.’”

22 year old Madison Fletcher has graduated college and is off to a prestigious archery academy to further her dream at becoming an Olympian. She has her sights on the perfect coach. There’s only one problem. 33 year old Elodie Booker left the sport behind when she was in her prime and became a lawyer in the middle of nowhere. Madison is determined to convince Elodie to take a chance on her, but things are so much more complicated than player and coach.

This one was a tiny bit painful. Elodie was not very likable in the beginning. She had some issues that she never dealt with so it made sense on some level, but she puts poor Madison through it multiple times. The epilogue made things better.

Cliffhanger – no (book #2 in series)

Age-gap delight

Excellent age-gap (33, 23) septic sports romance. Young up-and-coming archer and her reluctant coach, both struggling through personal loss.

Nicole Pyland has become a go-to for quick, quality romances.

Nice flowing read

This is my first book by this Author and I believe I'll buy more. A shot at Gold was a lovely read the way El and Maddie fell in love was so subtle they just shifted from been coach and student to caring for each other and sharing touches neither wanted to acknowledge but it just came so natural to them and I really liked that.

Both characters were fleshed out they both shared their trauma knew their short comings and helped each other find their whole which eventually became their home. I loved that El finally got her family she's been so lonely for so long it was truly heart breaking and I'm glad she's shooting again I only wished we got to experience her in her glory a bit too.

Wiles was good she was her first love but I'm glad Maddie realize she could've more than one forever loves because that's what she would've wanted for her. So in closing buy the book of you like sports, the coming together of two lost souls and just an all around good read

Wow what a book man! I will admit going into this book I did not expect to love it as much as I did. But by the time I finished this book I was left satisfied and with a smile on my face. Not my first Nicole Pyland lesbian romance book but I really really enjoyed this one.
The characters, the journey they go on, from moving from past events to falling in love and envisioning a whole future together was just so beautifully written.
I loved the way these two go on a life adventure together because isn’t that what love does? It can end up changing you for the better. That was perfectly conveyed in this book.
Seriously you all should give this a read!
I loved the way the chemistry increases between our two leads as the book goes on until it finally reaches a breaking point and the sex they have is incredibly hot.
Both characters developed so beautifully and it was definitely a satisfactory ending to their love story. ❤️❤️❤️

A Story About Healing

Both Madison and Elodie have experienced traumatic losses in their lives. Both of them dealt with those losses in probably less than ideal ways.

But Madison’s obsession with archery has turned her into an athletic prodigy, fully capable of winning an Olympic gold. Elodie, in turn, turned her back on archery and hasn’t picked up a bow in 10 years.

But Madison is convinced that Elodie Booker is the perfect person to coach her to that gold medal, and when Elodie backs out of the coaching job she’d initially accepted at The Archery Academy, Madison refuses to accept it and goes after Elodie to convince Elodie to be her coach.

What happens next is an opportunity for both to heal, and to find each other.

And that is the beautiful story Nicole Pyland has given us in this book.

A Shot at Gold. (Sports Series Book 2)

This was an interesting story and read.About a young woman Madison who was mad about Archery and wanted to go to the Olympics and hoped to be coached by Elodie Brooker who for her was the greatest Archer ever as far as she was concerned. But Elodie tells the Academy that s she cannot help as she was a lawyer now and was to busy. Madison is not amused and chases her down to her office.
This is a story about loss,,anger, hope and more.
Nicole Pyland author did a great job writing this and looking forward to reading more by her🤗 she kept this story flowing from the start to the end.

This is a lovely story of a young archer who wants to win a gold medal at the Olympic Games. In order to do that she wants the best person to coach her. This person turns out to be an ex Olympic gold medalist herself, who, after losing her coach and mentor, retired from the sport of archery completely. The chemistry between the two main characters is good, with an interesting and informative plot, this book will keep you engaged right to the end. I really enjoyed learning about archery and what it takes to be the best at what you do. Would highly recommend.

I’ve read and enjoyed several books by this author. Not only did I enjoy this one, I learned a bit about archery in the process. Bonus.

I’ve found Pyland creates interesting and complex characters and compelling dynamics that make her stories a great place to immerse myself. This is a story of desire, goals, and trust; success and disappointment; love and loss. I never give spoilers, just check this one out. With the Olympics gone this year, stories like these that bring sports vividly to us, along with a little romance, are entertaining and absolutely welcome. Just sayin’.

Ok. I notice high rating for this book and thought. "this is going to be amazing" then I started reading. And Madison happened. she was fine at the beginning, after few chapters she got absolute annoying, in fact I wished the author would've forgot to write her and made this book about Elodie alone loving herself !! .. the age gap is not huge by all means. However, Madison was so childish and immature, I honestly would give her an age of 18 not 23 ! Elodie Booker deserved way better than her.. I screamed "chill" from the moment she got angry about " not wanting her or wanting her"nonsense.

On Target!

Book two of the Sports Series is another winner. There are fewer supporting characters than in many of Nicole Pyland's other works, but given the nature of the sport in question, Archery, that's not surprising. The character development for the leading ladies is fantastic and the way their respective pasts impact their behavior, in general, and their relationship, in particular, is superb. Highly recommended.

I received an ARC copy of this book.

Madison and Elodie have both experienced loss but deal with that loss in very different ways. They come together to help each other move past they’re grief to start living as opposed to just surviving. Madison’s loss would have been devastating at any age, but experiencing it at the young age of 19 was even more heart breaking. Her honesty and innocence as she copes with that loss are so endearing you can’t help but love her character and experience her emotions with her while reading.

So amazing

This is the second book of the new Sports series but it is also a standalone book as it is a complete story about new opportunities, second chances and a lot of love. An excellent book to read with smart and realistic dialogues and so loveable characters. I absolutely loved it.

Nicole Pyland is such a consistent writer. Although I know nothing about the sport of archery, I enjoyed this story immensely. The story line does not get bogged down with sport references.

Madison is a young Olympic hopeful. Elodie the washed up has-been archer. Both have stories and a past that impact their current lives.

I’m loving this series

I’m a sports fan so I’m loving this series around sports. Although this author always has given me great stories, I can tell that she has a formula—a proven one but a formula all the same. However it doesn’t stop me from downloading each and every one of her stories.
