On the evening of Berry McCalister’s tenth birthday, her life was shattered as tragedy overtook the area. Eleven years later Berry had finished university in Melbourne and leaving Jess, who was still at uni and Tom in high school, Berry returned to the small town of Harlington to confront the past, do up the family’s homestead and more than likely, sell the property. Stone Gully Farm looked deserted, which of course it was, but Berry was determined to bring her old home back to liveable condition – and then she, Jess and Tom would decide what to do with it.

With several offers to buy the farm and take it off her hands, and Nate Tarant from the next property showing an interest in her – she’d liked him as a child, how embarrassing! – Berry became totally immersed in the renovations. When she decided to go through her father’s old sheds, she was surprised to find some old paperwork of his. What was it all about? As she worked her way through everything she could find, ready to dump a lot of it, she wasn’t sure what it was she’d found. With someone trying hard to get Berry to leave town she was nervous, rattled but also angry. After what she and her siblings had been through, how dare anyone make things harder…

The McCalister Legacy by Aussie author Nicole Hurley-Moore was a suspenseful, fast-paced novel which I thoroughly enjoyed. I worked out what had happened fairly early in the book, but it was satisfying to confirm by the end. I also feel the end was a little rushed, but overall, it was an excellent story, set in rural Victoria a couple of hours from Melbourne. Highly recommended.

With thanks to Allen & Unwin for my ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.

The McCalister Legacy by Nicole Hurley-Moore. (2020).

As a child, Berry's family was torn apart by shocking violence. 11 years on she returns to the small town of Harlington, determined to confront the past and make a decision on the family farm. Complicating her desire to leave is her attraction to childhood crush, Nate, who feels the same way now. Berry begins to question the long-believed story of what happened to her family. Will she ever find out the truth? And can one old rumour shed light on the real events of that terrible night?

I was so looking forward to this one after loving the author's previous novel (Lawson's Bend). While I can say that I didn't mind this one, it definitely did not live up to my expectations. To be honest, and this may sound petty, I didn't agree with Berry's age. Maybe if she had been older it would have worked better for me, but I felt like she didn't think or act like an average 21 year old woman and that irritated me for most of the book. I also picked the couple of big twists way before they happened so it felt a bit predictable for me, although others may not see said twists coming and thus be surprised. I did appreciate the light romance aspects of the book and some of the side characters were lovely and entertaining.
Overall: I liked this story but it wasn't great in my opinion. It's got pretty high reviews across the board though so might just not have been my cup of tea at the time of reading.

‘Nate was right, it was a sad place, and it was filled with ghosts – but they were her ghosts and she alone had to confront them.’

With half a dozen rural fiction novels to her name, Australian author Nicole Hurley-Moore returns with another blockbuster small town family mystery novel. An age old legacy, family secrets, a tragic and a quest to confront the cold hard truth defines The McCalister Legacy.

The McCalister Legacy unveils the tragic story of a family torn apart by a terrible act of violence. Berry McCalister has been unable to move from the pain that haunts her following the loss of her family, due to a shocking incident. Despite over a decade passing since this heartbreaking turn of events, Berry knows she cannot continue to lock away the past. In an act of true courage, Berry decides to return to her home town of Harlington to close the book on her family’s rural property. But just as Berry decides to finally say goodbye to the past, she is faced with a barrage of emotions. Berry’s childhood sweetheart Nate re-enters her life and old feelings are rekindled. As Berry makes some all important steps to putting her past behind her, fresh allegations and new revelations implore this tortured soul to finally uncover the truth behind her tragic family story.

Nicole Hurley-Moore is really becoming a force to be reckoned with the rural fiction field. This valued author has amassed a great collection of novels for those who love Australian country based stories, with a touch of romance and hint of suspense. This time around Nicole Hurley-Moore has branched further afield and she has incorporated a historical thread to her novel. I really enjoyed this aspect of The McCalister Legacy.

As we have come to expect and enjoy from Nicole Hurley-Moore’s releases, small town country living plays a big role in the proceedings of the book. In The McCalister Legacy we are fully immersed in the general way of life in the area of Harlington in rural Victoria. I really enjoyed this country based sojourn. I also appreciated Nicole Hurley-Moore’s representation of her focal rural property. From the day to day operations of a farm, the small town rumor mill and the sense of community that comes from residing in rural areas of Australia, Nicole Hurley-Moore has her finger on the pulse.

Berry McCalister is the central character in this new novel from Nicole Hurley-Moore. Berry is both strong and vulnerable in the same breath. I had a great deal of respect and sympathy for Berry. I also dearly wanted Berry to finally put the past behind her, but I had high hopes that Berry would find the answers she so desperately required around her family’s tragic past. Nicole Hurley-Moore does a good job of suspending the mystery side of things in this area and the reader is deliberately kept in the dark until the parting stages of the novel. I did find the book gratifying in the sense that the culprit of this act of violence is apprehended, allowing justice to be served.

What I enjoyed most about The McCalister Legacy was the different timeline avenues Nicole Hurley-Moore applied to her novel. From a present day timeframe, to a more recent past based focus (2007), through the turn of the century (1906) thread, I thought these eras were weaved stitched together very well. I loved the 1906 based narrative so much that I could have easily enjoyed many more chapters from this time period. The gold rush mystery and the lost boy greatly appealed to me. I do hope Nicole Hurley-Moore has plans to delve into the historical field in future books.

Nicole Hurley-Moore wins her readers over again with this fetching new tale of family turmoil, concealed truths, tragic acts, small town living, age-old legacies, second chance romance and restitution. The McCalister Legacy is a staple read for rural fiction fans.

The McCalister Legacy is an engaging novel of rural romantic suspense from Nicole Hurley-Moore.

Eleven years after the tragic loss of her parents and grandparents on the evening of her tenth birthday, Berry McCalister returns to their family farm in the small town of Harlington to decide the property’s fate. Her instinct is to remodel the house and then get rid of Stone Gully Farm, and reminders of the tragedy along with it, but as the renovations progress she’s surprised by how at home she is beginning to feel. The community of Harlington is warm and welcoming, particularly Nate Tarant from the neighbouring horse stud, but when she decides not to sell she is subjected to anonymous threats. Berry is puzzled given the land has no particular value, until she discovers some old paperwork of her father’s tied to an area legend, and a deadly secret is finally brought to light.

Set in rural Victoria, the story unfolds over three timelines. The earliest reveals a story that has become a legend in the town of Harlington of a young boy who got lost and stumbled upon a seam of gold, but was too young to reveal its exact location in 1902. The second timeline takes place in 2007 and explores the circumstances surrounding the murder-suicide that deprived Berry and her siblings of their parents and grandparents, while the third timeline is set in the present day.

The plot offers a good mix of drama, mystery and romance, and though it’s fairly predictable, it’s satisfying in that everything is quite cleanly resolved. While The McCalister Legacy is centered on a disturbing event, the villain is eventually exposed and punished, and there is a happy, albeit not perfect, ending for the remaining characters.

A quick, easy and pleasant novel, I enjoyed The McCalister Legacy and I’m sure fans of the genre, and Hurley-Moore will too.

The McCalister Legacy is about greed, guilt and jealousy. Berry McCalister and her two siblings decided it was time to decide on their family farm. Due to brother Tom and sister busy with school and university Berry McCalister travel to Harlington on her own. However, on arrival, the first person Berry McCalister saw was her childhood crush Nate Tarant. The readers of The McCalister Legacy will continue to follow Berry McCalister and Nate Tarant to find out what happens.

The McCalister Legacy is another fantastic book by Nicole Hurley-Moore. I like the way Nicole Hurley-Moore can incorporate the two plots of this book and combined the stories at the end. I engaged with The McCalister Legacy from the first page. I love Nicole Hurley-Moore portrayal of her characters and the way they intertwine with each other. The McCallister Legacy is well written and researched by Nicole Hurley-Moore. I like the description of the settings of The McCalister Legacy that allow me to imagine being part of the plot of this book.

The readers of McCalister Legacy will learn about the consequences of murder on the family and friends. Also, the readers of McCalister Legacy will learn about running a horse stud.

I recommend this book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story MS Hurley-Moore knows how to pull a reader in with her stories this one is set in a small Victorian country town Harlington, when a terrible act of violence turned a family upside down and left three children orphaned, the children moved away but now eleven years later the eldest Berry McCalister has decided it is time to go home and make a few decisions.

Berry arrives at her old home, the last time she had seen it was her tenth birthday when violence changed her life now she must decide if they will sell the house or keep it, either way Berry will be here for a while as some renovations will need to be done. She runs into her old friend Nate Tarrant and as they spend time together their feelings grow for each other but Berry also feels that there is a lot more that she should know about what happened eleven years ago someone in town is keeping secrets and Berry is determined to uncover them which put her in danger.

Nate doesn’t remember much about Berry and her family but he knows what happened that day everyone in town does but he is drawn to her and is happy to help in any way he can and when threats are made against her he is determined to keep her safe, there are a few people asking questions and Nate and Berry work together to uncover secrets as they fall for each other.

This is a fast paced story that had me turning the pages, lots of intrigue and suspense and a beautiful romance growing as together they uncover the truth of what happened that day and the McCalister legacy from many years ago I enjoyed going back in time to find out what happened, this is a story that I would highly recommend it is a wonderful rural romance thank you MS Hurley-Moore for a great story.

I was lucky enough to read an early copy of The McAlister Legacy, thanks to Allen & Unwin. I really enjoyed the dual timeline and the element of mystery, as well as the gold fever running through the book. Nicole's characters are warm, her settings are always well written and it's a cosy read that will appeal to a wide audience.

Berry McCalister had a somewhat idyllic, rural life until the day of her 10th birthday when her mother told her to take her baby brother and ride to her friend’s house and not look back. That day, life as she knew it was torn apart and she lost half her family. She and her siblings were taken in by her uncle, a lawyer in Melbourne and now, 13 years later, Berry has returned to the small town of Harlington near Bendigo to finally step foot back inside her childhood home. They must decide what to do with it – do they keep it, for the wonderful memories it also held, or do they part with it because of the sadness and terror of their last day there. Whilst Berry is deciding, she reconnects with Nate Tarant, whom she knew of as a child. Harlington has the promise of many things, but there’s also secrets to be unearthed and someone that doesn’t want Berry sticking around.

The McCalister Legacy is set mostly in present day but also dips back into 2007 and 1906. In the present day, Berry McCalister has graduated university and at a bit of a loss, she’s decided to return to the house she spent the first 10 years of her life in, so that she and her 2 younger siblings might finally make a decision about it. The events of 2007 are why Berry and her siblings are without their parents and why they do not live in this home anymore. And 1906 and the wanderings of a small boy hold the answer to a mystery that could change everything.

I really enjoyed this story. Even though I knew there was an incident from the blurb, I have to admit, I did not realise how dark that opening was going to be. Berry is so young when her mother tells her to take her brother and go. And ever since that day, Berry and her siblings have lived with immeasurable grief….and anger as well. Now Berry has returned and at first, she thinks that it’s best to sell the place and move on. But as she begins making the changes necessary, the old house starts to lose its demons and resemble the loving, family home it once was. She finds herself drawn to it, wanting to keep it more and more and when her siblings come to visit to check on her progress, she hopes they see it too.

Berry has a lot of courage, returning to such a place on her own. She’s still quite young, only her early 20s but she meets neighbour Nate Tarant immediately and he’s quick to offer to lend a hand. Obviously the locals remember the incident well and I think sometimes, it feels a bit like being under a microscope for Berry, everyone wants to know what she’s going to do and if she’s going to sell and if so, who to and for how much. It’s a small town and small towns are always full of people knowing everyone else’s business! She definitely gets a more relaxed feel around Nate, who enjoys spending time with her and definitely wants her to stay around. She also enjoys the company of his younger twin sisters (so did I, I thought they were hilarious and I’d love to see them and Berry’s siblings get their own books in the future) and I also liked the friendship Berry built with the woman who ran the B&B she was staying in whilst overseeing the renovation of the family home.

Throughout this runs a mystery that if solved, will change everything. I thought the glimpses back into the past were just enough for the reader to build the story in their mind, to try and figure out the truth just a little bit ahead of Berry being able to put it all together herself. She’s had a little bit of time with just one painful narrative so it’s a chance for her to rewrite that, not just for herself and her siblings, but for everyone. It’s clear that most people thought she’d sell and leave town again but when it becomes known that she wants to stay, someone definitely goes out of their way to aggressively let Berry know that she should leave. And that makes her feel that she’s on the right track with what she’s looking into and that she needs to keep going and not be intimidated.

I really liked the character of Berry and the way that she threw herself into everything headfirst. Even when everything seemed too depressing in the beginning, she didn’t allow it to get her down and slowly the rewards of her work began to come. I liked the slow, gentle development between her and Nate and enjoyed the rest of the locals as well. Hopefully we will get to return to this area in the future!

This was an excellent book with action aplenty. I found that when I finished it I was disappointed because I wanted more!

It was about Berry (Bereneice) McCalister returning to her home town of Harlington after eleven years away. She wants to face her family's tragic violent past and sell the family farm.

Berry gets renovations underway so that they can get the best price for the farm and start cleaning out the sheds on the property. With the renovations nearly finished and the complication of Nate Tarant, her old neighbour and chilhood crush spending time with her, Berry and her family decide to keep the farm in the family.

Berry begins to question the tragic night that brought about her family's demise whilst she is investigating an old rumour of gold in Harlington which no-one ever found.

Another great book from Nicole. Berry's story was quite unique and I also enjoyed the back and forth between time as two tales were told along the same path. Worth a read if you like any of Nicole's other stories

I loved this book, it was such a great read. I only wish it was longer with more on each of the characters to tie up the story, eg Young Neds reaction to the gold find, reactions from Jess and Tommy, and what happened with Stone Gully Farm while Berry is living with Nate.

A lovely, easy read. I always enjoy Australian books and the depictions of the land. The romance factor wasn’t overdone or too cheesy and the different years chapters were easy to follow. I will have to try another book by Nicole Hurley-Moore.
