Firstly, let me say that if I was one of those reviewer’s who rates books with star’s then this would be a huge ten star book, but as I’m not I’ll just overly gush about how much I love this book instead.

I am an avid reader of Jenni Fletcher’s work, everything from her Medieval’s to this Victorian and I have to say that this is the finest I have read, Captains Amberton’s Inherited Bride is a beautifully written story with some well-crafted and defined character’s, which portrays a wealth of knowledge and research into the era. I am an odd reader that I can always seem to ‘see’ the hero of the story so much clearer than the heroine, yet in this case Violet spoke to me – her character shouted out and made me listen and when I did, the revelations of not just the character but of how I felt about her were astounding.

Lance (Lancelot) Amberton is the black sheep of the family, he is on a knife-edge where his father is concerned and so when an innocent mis-understanding concerning his twin brother’s future wife; Violet, this just confirms everything that his father and the whole of society think of him – that he is a un-repenting scoundrel who has is a basically a waste of space. Lance gets banished from and right there and then he walk’s out of his family home, goes back to the army and from that day he never see’s his brother or father again.

After living her life practically, a prisoner in her own home, because of her stern, selfish and controlling father – who is such a pathetic bully who really should be ashamed of his treatment of his beautiful daughter. Violet has always been told by him that the only reason any man would want to go near her was because of her vast wealth, she grew up sheltered in her prison like home with this man telling her daily that she is odd, ugly and no one will ever love her for her. At her first ever – and only ever – social outing she meets Captain Amberton, who because of her naivety she instantly thinks that he is making fun of her and doing what her father has always said a man will do to her and string her along. One thing leads to another and she is witness to the Captains banishment, while she is pushed closer and closer to the Arthur; Lance’s twin.

For me this is by far the best Fletcher has done, I do love her medieval’s but this is something special, I do have a real soft spot for Victorian stories and this is just fabulous it is infused with Fletcher’s unrelenting passion for history, for the era and especially for Yorkshire. I particularly love how she has written in the beautiful Yorkshire Rose into the floors and ceiling of Amberton Castle. I love the Arthurian undercurrent is such a wonderful addition, it’s subtle and perfect for the story. I really can’t say too many good things about this book, for me it is a breath-takingly pure and beautiful tale and this story really shows just what a fine and articulated writer Ms Fletcher is, she time after time shows that she can handle the hard and complicated stories as well as the loving romantic ones.

I think that any author who can switch so seamlessly from one era to another and create such inspiring and fabulously original stories that draw you in are so talented and Jenni Fletcher is up there with the best.

Just perfect!

Lance is a rake and now that his father and brother have died he realizes he wants to be a better man and make amends. He decides that the best way to do that is to marry the woman his father wanted for his brother (as now he is the heir and the estate needs her money).
Violet was almost a prisoner of her father and wasn’t allowed anything. When he dies she finds out he conditioned her inheritance to her marriage to the heir of the Amberton Estate. She is less than thrilled by this prospect, but they end up striking a bargain: they will split the money and he will give her freedom to travel and do as she pleased. They also agree not to have sex for seven years (the time needed for his inheritance to be sure, as his older brother’s body has never been found).
The story is well written but I had a hard time getting involved. Some aspects seemed a little forced (like the seven years of celibacy). It improved towards the end though, and I’m glad I kept reading.
This is my first book by this Author and I intend to read other books by her.

Violet has never known any freedom. Her father dictated her life and made sure her world was very small. Unfortunately his death doesn't bring the release she seeks, her father still doesn't want her to make her own choices and has limited her options through his will. Violet is forced to either marry the man of his choosing or become entirely penniless and alone, which means she has to marry the insufferable Captain Lance Amberton. If they'd exchange vows he would gain plenty of money and Violet will have a title. However, there's a lot she has to give up if she'd say yes. What should she do?

Lance isn't as mean as Violet thinks he is. He doesn't particularly want to get married either, but his brother is missing and he has to step in. That's why he offers Violet as much space in their marriage as she desires. She can travel, will have her own money and can do whatever she pleases. They will sleep in separate rooms and he will give her everything she needs. Violet is tempted to accept this generous offer, even if it means she might not find love, but can she trust Lance and will he keep his promises? Does Violet actually want him to be this honorable or will spending time with Lance change her wishes?

Captain Amberton's Inherited Bride is a wonderful romantic story. Lance is the black sheep of the family. He has quite a reputation, but people can change. After his brother's disappearance Lance wants to do the right thing, only that doesn't always prove to be easy. He has a big challenge ahead of him. Violet might look adorable, but she's fierce, intelligent and determined. Her father forced her to be obedient, but she no longer tolerates being bossed around. I loved that about her character. She has a fantastic fiery spirit and she needs it when she's around the moody Lance. There are plenty of sparks between them and I couldn't wait to find out where their story would lead.

Jenni Fletcher has written a fantastic entertaining book. I loved the vivid descriptions of her main characters' personalities and their surroundings. She makes everything she writes about come to life in a delightful way and her story has the exact right atmosphere. There are plenty of fascinating twists and turns that kept me captivated from beginning to end and I read Captain Amberton's Inherited Bride in one sitting. It's an amazing heartwarming story that put a big smile on my face.

Jenni Fletcher is a new-to-me author, this is the first book I have read of hers and it definitely won't be the last.

Violet Harper is kept under the thumb by her father. Supposedly he keeps her from having any kind of social life because he cares about her safety. On one occasion he allows her to attend a ball where unknown to her she is to meet her future husband. Between his and her father, they have come up with a plan where after her father dies she is to marry Arthur Amberton if she is to inherit her father's fortune. Arthur knows of the plan and is despondent over it. He is in love with another woman whom he wants to marry, but he just can't stand up to his father. Violet is to be kept in the dark until the reading of her father's will. She won't even get a chance to argue about it.

At the ball, not only does Violet meet Arthur, she meets his twin brother Lance. He is a charmer and even though her father has forbidden her to talk or dance with him, she is cajoled by Lance into doing just that. She is enjoying herself for the first time in her life until something Lance says is taken the wrong way by her and she rushes off the dance floor away from him. His father than castigates him in front of everybody and Lance storms off with his father telling him to go and to never come back again!

5 Years later and Lance has to return home because both his brother and his father are dead. He has been injured by a bullet and can no longer stay in the army, so he makes his way home to take over the estate and all its responsibilities. Shockingly he finds out that one of those responsibilities is to marry Violet. Their fathers hadn't indicated a specific name in their wills, just that Violet must marry the heir, who Lance happens to be now. He never wished to marry but the estates and his mining project could definitely benefit from her inheritance, so he doesn't fight the will.

Unfortunately Violet does. She has been under the thumb for all of her life, and now she would rather be penniless and free than have money and be forced to marry Lance who she remembers devastated her at her first ball. He actually just expects her to turn up at the church to get married to him after he sent her the instructions via a letter. He didn't even have the decency to see her in person. It's with no doubts that Violet decides to run away.

Will Lance catch up to her, and can he convince her that it wouldn't be hell on earth to marry him? You will have to read the book to find out!

I absolutely loved this story. Violet and Lance had deep-seated issues that they had to deal with even before they could contemplate the possibility of marrying and being happy. I felt so sorry for Violet because her father in his supposed care of her stripped away all of her confidence. She felt worthless and that no man would ever want to marry her. It would take a very strong caring man to prove to her otherwise. Lance is that man if only he can convince her that it's not just her money that he is after. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the couple learn to deal with their issues and watching Violet bloom. There were a few other characters in the book that I loved too, Lance's 'man' and his housekeeper to name just a couple. This book was a real delight to read and I am looking forward to reading more from this wonderful author.

I voluntarily reviewed an advanced readers' copy of this book.

As reviewed at Roses Are Blue: https://wp.me/p3QRh4-LS

Captain Lance Amberton is returning home to accept the conditional title of Viscount, now that the heir, his beloved twin brother, Arthur, has been lost at sea and presumed dead. Lance is bearing the guilt of not responding to Arthur's pleas for him to come home to help him, as well as his own less than honorable actions while serving as a soldier. In addition to the title, it seems that Lance has also inherited Arthur's betrothed, as the contract only states the heir to the title, not listing a specific name. Still, Lance is now ready to accept his duty, and prepares to wed.

Violet Harper is an heiress, the daughter of a shipbuilder who kept her isolated, and belittled her for all of her twenty three years. Now that her father is dead, Violet learns that she must marry the Amberton heir within one month or be disinherited. Although she has intentions of fleeing, she ends up in Lance's company, and he offers her a compromise. If she agrees to the marriage, they will split the inheritance, and Lance will offer her the freedom to travel and live the life she chooses. At first Violet is opposed, remembering the perceived insult she received from Lance at their brief meeting five years ago. Eventually, she capitulates, and they embark on a convenient marriage, agreeing not share a bed until some distant time in the future, and then, just to provide an heir.

I appreciate that Lance and Violet cleared up the misunderstanding of five years ago right away, rather than have it turn into a permanent wound in their new marriage. Violet accepts that Lance was not being insulting to her, it was her own lack of confidence that made her so unaware of her own attractions. After the marriage, Lance works at improving the family estate, while dealing with the injury he received and his constant drinking. Violet begins to feel more sure of herself and blossoms. Soon sparks begin between this couple, and they finally share a bed and look to be on their way to a happy future. An unexpected twist causes Lance to reject the new happiness he's found. Will he be able to see the light and save his marriage before his action cause a permanent break?

CAPTAIN AMBERTON'S INHERITED BRIDE contains one of my favorite tropes, the marriage of convenience that turns to love, as well as significant character development. Lance had not been an honorable man, but he redeemed himself. Violet was unsure, a bit naive, and had no realization of her own beauty, and she came into her own. The romance between this couple was sweet and believable, and made for a satisfying and delightful read.

Early on in this one, the hero locks the heroine in a tower, and I had some concerns that he would be a little too alpha for my liking, but fortunately, things turned around fairly quickly and this ended up being a genuinely sweet, respectful relationship.

Violet’s spent much of her life hidden away from the world, and her father’s death seemingly offers no freedom, leaving her with the choice of destitution or marriage to hold on to her inheritance. Lance doesn’t like their predicament anymore than Violet does, his twin brother was meant to marry her, but now it’s fallen to him, the brother who was disowned, the brother who got himself shot for less than horrible reasons, he doesn’t see himself as the husband material Violet deserves.

I thought the author did a solid job of redeeming Lance after the tower incident, his behavior that night isn’t necessarily excused, but you’re given a pretty good understanding of his mindset, that alcohol, grief, guilt and insecurities drove him in that moment, and it’s clear how deeply he regrets his actions, so I was okay with moving on from it, especially when he doesn’t regress at any point, the man he is from then on is light-years away from that guy.

While it’s commonplace to find a petite heroine in romances (probably too commonplace), I liked that this is a little different, we don’t really see Violet envied for her size, instead, you see the flip-side for someone of her stature, where she’s sometimes ridiculed, condescended to, or seen as less capable than she actually is. I appreciated that this story touched on that other reality of someone her size, since the majority of the time being small and thin is only depicted as the ideal, when in truth, they can be targets of self-esteem crushing criticism, too.

As for the romance, I really liked that this took it’s time getting to the steamier bits, and the slow build of chemistry, of getting to know one another, especially during fireside chats (those scenes a nice nod to Jane Eyre), I feel like it’s so much easier to believe in the happily ever after when things aren’t rushed and you're shown the bond developing over time.

I received this book through a giveaway.

I’m not certain if the author would prefers writing simpering idiots as historical female protagonists, but after the first instalment in this series, I thought it wouldn't do much harm to confirm my suspicions. Lo and behold, the irrational Ms Violet Harper was another airhead down the line. The more I read, the more exhausted I became to be in Ms Harper's mind's thought, but she was a slight improvement from Ms Holt (the first book's female protagonist) who seemed to be irrationality personified, confirmed once again in this book.
Violet's solution to the two 'challenges' in this book, was to run off to the York city walls, *face palm*. The 'final challenge' was once again a simple issue with communication but it was more believable than the first book.
In addition, I wasn't impressed with how the author set up Ms Holt in this book, she just seemed to be a bad friend. Rather than encouraging her friend to communicate well with her new husband and sort out their marital miscommunication problems, she added coal to the fire by disparaging the character of someone she hardly knew using gossip she’d heard (something that she was vehemently against in Book 1 because of her terrible elopement experience). I'm also not sure it was her place to say that she was giving her friend's husband 'one last chance to prove himself' in a historical romance. Even modern etiquette would consider that overstepping boundaries.
I tend not to bother with historical romances because they're written by modern women who give their characters modern thinking and modern lapses in etiquette while in 18th century garb. I thought this would be different, it wasn’t. That said, I won't be attempting the 3rd book.

The characters of Violet and Lance were just perfectly developed within this story with both of them at times pulling at my heart strings. There is so much more to the characters than first appears and Jenni Fletcher's writing brought their personalities out in a way that made the story such a pleasure to read. Violet has a big heart with an inner strength even after everything she has been through that made her so very likeable for me. Then you have Lance who has hidden depths that were revealed piece by piece and changed my opinion of him making him such a strong hero. Their interactions were entertaining with a deep chemistry between the pair that was so lovely to see play out.

I have to mention the setting as it was definitely a highlight for me with it being set in Yorkshire and I do have to admit to having a soft spot for Whitby. The pace of the story was pretty perfect and I actually read it over one evening as I just couldn't put it down.

Captain Amberton's Inherited Bride is such a delightful story with two characters who charmed me completely!

Five stars from me!

With thanks to Jenni Fletcher for my copy. This is my honest and unbiased opinion.

This is the first book I have read from author Jenni Fletcher and I absolutely loved it! I will definitely be reading her other books!

Our hero Captain Lance Amberton first met heroine Violet Harper at a ball in his Father's home. It seens Violet and Lance's fathers have arranged a marriage between Violet and Lance's older twin Arthur. Arthur is not happy about this arrangement and Violet is unaware. Lance dances with Violet at the ball and although there is an attraction, misunderstandings happen and Lance ends up being banished from his father's home. Our hero and heroine meet again after both father's and Arthur have died and a marriage of convenience is proposed to gain Violet's inheritance.

I liked Lance and Violet from the beginning. Ms. Fletcher did a great job of turning their marriage of convenience to a HEA. A very well written love story with a few twists. Definitely recommend!

I really enjoyed this book. I read it in about a day, which is pretty fast for me.
Lance Amberton is trying to do the right thing. He's lost his father and his brother and got injured all in the same week and he's having trouble adjusting.
Violet Harper has been controlled by her father all her life and even in his death, he's trying to marry her off like she's a possession. But if she refuses, she will be penniless.

Both Lance and Violet are attracted to each other, but manage to talk themselves out of thinking the other is attracted to them. There's a maze and a castle and some crumbling walls. The characters are so real, I felt like I knew them.

Loved it. I'm looking forward to reading about Amberton's brother too.

Usual disclaimer, I know the author because we belong to the same professional organisation.

I've read all of Jenni Fletcher's books, so I knew that I'd enjoy this one even before I started reading it. Yet still, Jenni managed to surprise me. She created a thoroughly unlikeable hero and placed him with a heroine on the opposite spectrum, so that as you're reading the book, you're shouting about why such a lovely woman needs a marriage of convenience to such a brute. And almost immediately after you do, the tone begins to shift, we see the hero redeem himself slowly but surely, and the heroine come into her own after a history of self-doubt. This book is as excellent as Jenni's others. I highly recommend.

I am quite new to reading Historical books but I was recommended by a friend to read a few and was lucky enough to read this one. I loved it and the story between Violet Harper who must marry or be disinherited by her father who was wanting to arrange a marriage between her and Captain Lance Ambertons brother Arthur. I was hooked from page 1 as Jenni Fletcher brings the characters to life. Also this book is probably the first historical book where I haven't had to look words up to understand but that is just because I'm new to historical. So thank you Jenni for allowing me to read this, and I have been converted and look forward to reading your other books.

This book was kinda neat. At the beginning we get to meet the players Violet Harper and her father, then Albert, Lance Amberton and their father. Then we move ahead five years and the fun starts. Albert is presumed dead and both parents are dead. I loved Violet. She had a very strong will and stood up for what she felt was important. Lance is now a Captain home from the war and trying to recover from many things. I love how the story goes. It is set at a time when women had no rights. Yet there are things that are set in the story that probably happened. Its a well writtened story and worth a read. It has a surprising twist at the end. That makes me looking for the next one in this series.

When her father died Violet thought she'd have her freedom and be allowed to live her own life after years of being shackled to his side. But when his will is read she gets a horrid shock, marry the heir to the Viscount Amberton or be left penniless. What her father didn't know was the older Amberton son had disappeared presumed drowned, and the younger son Lance who her father disapproved of was now not only the heir but the new Viscount. But not happy with this option Violet decides to run away on the morning of her wedding.
But how will the injured, reclusive new heir receive the news?

I really liked this book 4.5*

Well what can I say. Well written with good character development. Although I found the plot somewhat predictable (maybe I have just read too many historical romances) it was still an excellent read. Lance who has had a misspent youth is still intrinsically honourable and Violet is seeking her freedom after having brought up by an over-controlling father. Together they struggle to overcome their pasts and find love.
Highly recommended.

Great start with an interesting plot, H twins and h, all have terrible fathers who try to exert their power over their children. It all goes badly of course, and one the of Hs and the h have to try and make sense out of their marriage. It was good at first, but I lost patience with their hot headed reactions - not a brain between the married couple. It was just OK, only just.

Loved it. Loved the whole trilogy based on Whitby, an area I know well. Each story is beautifully stand-alone. There are the same characters in each but they take second place to the main protagonists. Jenni is a good writer and brings her characters, the story and the area to life.

"Fletcher takes fans on another gratifying journey through the gothic Yorkshire landscape, this time with a couple forced to wed under dire consequences. A bit of mystery and eventual triumph over past emotional abuse make for a satisfying read, and fans will adore the Beauty and the Beast theme as both Violet and Lance battle deep scars in order to win their own HEA" (4 stars @RT Book Reviews).
