The stories with the new force users come to a head as the Black Flash returns to try and kill them all. The new forces don't belong in this universe and are corrupting the Speed Force. In the background, the Rogues are all powering up and getting new costumes leading into the Year of the Villain event in the next arc. The new costumes are all kind of cheesy looking so I hope they are only temporary.

To be honest, I'm getting a little tired of Williamson's writing on this book. Barry Allen is just not that compelling of a character with Williamson at the helm. Every time I read one of these arcs, I wish Wally West was back. The talented Rafa Sandoval handles the majority of the art with long time Flash artist Scott Collins taking on the last two issues.

One of the better volumes in awhile.

Black Flash has returned to get rid of all these OTHER force users. He's tired of strength and all that mumble jumbo shit so he's on the hunt. Barry being Barry doesn't want to let anyone die, even assholes and villains. So he does his best to stop the Black Flash but it's nearly impossible. Guess who makes his grand appearance? HUNTER ZOLOMON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This volume is actually pretty solid. First half has art that is really good and some great fight scenes. Barry doesn't feel so sappy this volume either. I loved the Hunter Zolomon intro and his part of the overall story is solid. The rogue stuff is such a afterthought relating to the fucking shitty villain of the year or whatever storyline, who gives a shit. Also, the art flips to the other artist who's on flash and man oh man is his faces weird. iris hair looks like she got shocked every time.

Overall, this was a pretty solid volume. I actually enjoyed reading flash again. 3.5 out of 5.

With Year One behind him, Barry finds the Speed Force under attack from all sides! The freeing of the Strength, Still, and Sage Forces has weakened the Speed Force considerably, and it doesn't like that - to the point that the Black Flash is on the prowl for all Strength, Sage, and Still Force users, and he'll go through Barry if he has to!

Don't let the issue covers fool you - this storyline isn't about the Rogues. They're here, bubbling away in the background as the Year Of The Villain branding overtakes the series, only for them to spring into action just in time to take over the following volume. No, this volume's all about the new Force Users, as familiar faces from across the series pop up. Barry's plight feels heartfelt, if sometimes misguided; his hero complex goes a bit overboard at times, when some conversations with his allies could make his life easier, but then he's never been any different. Things really kick into high gear in the final few issues as Hunter Zolomon, Eobard Thawne, and the Black Flash all show up at once, and you know that's going to be a good time. Williamson's long-term plotting for this series pays dividends, as plotlines you never expected to converge do so, and then some.

The art is an equal share between Rafa Sandoval and Scott Kolins, who have proven themselves time and again across this series. They have very disparate styles, but the book is divided cleanly down the middle, so it's not too jarring after the initial transition between the two.

This volume of the Flash exemplifies everything that Williamson has been doing over his four years on the book, with new ideas, old ideas, and unexpected ideas all twining together to make a coherent narrative that will keep you guessing right to the last minute.

THIS WAS SO GOOD!

I loved this storyline as we see Barry take all of his friends and telling them about the coming crisis after Black Flash targets him but it takes down Psych and so Barry must protect Fuerza and Steadfast but well enter Hunter Zolomon and we see his motives realized here but when the real origins and his connections to Thawne are revealed it will change everything! Its an epic team up between Flash and Zolomon to defeat the Black Flash and will they be able to save the multiverse and also what will happen to Zolomon?!

Its an epic story and pays off so many things and is the perfect redemption of Zolomon and I love everything that happens here and a great moment to close the storyline in a perfect manner! Josh really bringing the hits here! A MUST RECOMMEND!

The Flash seems to finally be getting his act together, but then the book gets hijacked by the events of "Year of the Villain," so it ends on a cliffhanger. Decent is about the only word you can use for this edition to the book series.

I'm very intruiged with this new Rogue storyline that's brewing up and probably going to be the main plot for the next volume. I like them and their new re-assembly of the old team, but I do not like implications of Lex Luthor. I'm having a lot of fun catching up with all my The Flash singles, only a couple left!

This set was kind of just there. A bit forgettable, a bit formulaic.
The “Year of the Villain” thing didn’t help much, because turning the Rogues into scary, 90’s version of their own selves, while just moving around in the background, didn’t really help the main theme, that was actually lacking from its own depth. Which brings us to the famed Forces… It just didn’t work. The characters carrying each one of them, had just one-trick in their backs. Fuerza was all about punching things. The Sage guy, whose name escapes me, was just twisted without any real reason behind it. And the guy with the Still Force, with his odd turtle shell shield, was just a pacifist that just wouldn’t walk over an ant. Together, they were just plain boring.
The Forces could have been approached way differently, but the way they were portrayed just doomed the concepts.
So long Strength, Sage, and Still Forces. I hope we finally move on from all of you.

Solid. Joshua Williamson's run on the Flash continues to be a truly entertaining read for comic book fans. Each volume builds on the last. The Flash creative team just doesn't miss a beat here. Though I am still unhappy with what DC editorial has done to Wally West after Heroes in Crisis this series is just well written. Sandoval's art fits the Flash series like a glove though I still prefer Brett Booth. We are now moving closer towards the Death Metal event so things are a bit bleak for the Flash and his allies. While Barry aka the Flash tries to protect the other force users from the Black Flash. He has to come to grips with the impending doom of his rogue's gallery and the loss of the speed force. The stakes are really high but the Flash remains optimistic that good will win the day. Williamson just gets what superhero comics are all about.

The colors really pop and the art was consistently good on this arc. There are a lot of plotlines to Williamson is balancing but amazingly they don't bog down the story. If anything I was a bit upset that Williamson had to touch any of the Snyder Death Metal stuff but hey when written right comic books should handle the continuity correctly. If you are not reading the Flash you are missing one of the best series being publish by DC comics.

The Flash Vol. 12: Death and the Speed Force

The release of the various powers from the Forever Force is causing Barry and his fellow speedsters to slow down. Old friends and old enemies hold the key to restoring the world to where it was.

Great artwork and an exciting plot helps make this a great storyline for the Flash.

I really love Williamson's take on the Flash. This time, Barry makes amends to some former teammates and works on protecting three metahumans from a death entity chasing them, all while the classic Rogues cook something up in the background. Good straightforward superhero comics!

In V12, Williamson brings together all of his recent additions to the *Force in a big climax that features the Black Flash trying to kill them all. It's one part good book-ending, and one part the slightly shallow silliness that has undermined much of Williamson's run.

A lot of that comes down to really erratic pacing. And that also shows up when ZOOM rather abruptly enters the scene. But from that point on, Williamson's story reaches a level that it hadn't previously managed, really providing great depth on Zoom's character and motives and propelling them into the future in an interesting way.

Generally, Williamson understands where the great Flash runs were (primarily Waid and Johns) and he tries to emulate them, but falls short due to pacing issues and the shallowness of his writing (quite possibly imposed by DC higher-ups). Occasionally, his intention shines through, and this is one such volume, at least in its waning days.

*I've read WAY more books than I've taken time to review, so it's time for... quick, knee-jerk reactions!*
- Not a huge fan of the new forces (seems a bit like scraping the story barrel to me). They're more confusing than interesting, but, this idea of the Black Flash being an antibody trying to save the speed force by killing the new force users.... It actually made for a pretty interesting story.
- It's been a while since I read "Flash: Year One" (I know... I should read in order, but I just see a book, and think, "Oooh, pretty, I wanna read it!"), and I feel like I'll need to reread that (or at least glance through it again) for future Flash volumes.
- A quick read that was actually pretty engaging. Not the best Flash story I've read, but far, far, FAR from the worst. (I'm glad to see Barry Allen acting like Barry Allen again, honestly.) I'm curious to see what's going to happen next with the Rogues and doom and with the speed force... imploding? Not sure. Onward!

Sooooo over the other ~Forces. Three stars for Glider and Hunter only. Also Iris's hair drastically changes within the last two issues without the scene/day changing? lol wtf

Coming out of his time remembering his first year as the Flash, Barry comes rushing back to Central City, but this time with the hopes of reestablishing the speedsters as a family. He wants to join users of the other new Forces (Still, Strength, and Sage) to the team too... but someone powerful has something to say about that: Black Flash! The speedster of Death wants the users of the new Forces to die as their presence is slowing down the Speed Force. But Barry is convinced that doesn't have to happen...

Meanwhile, after Lex Luthor's announcement to all the villains of the world, we see that the original Rogues (Captain Cold, Heatwave, Weather Wizard, Mirror Master, and Golden Glider) all are much stronger and more powered up. They are banding together to take over and they have the whole Perpetua/Doom stuff on their side...

After Black Flash is able to outrun Barry and kill Psych (strong user of the Sage Force), he hides Steadfast (Still Force) and Fuerza (Strength Force) inside the Strength Force, while he tries to deal with Death chasing. A twist in the story comes when Hunter Zolomon shows up and introduces Barry to the Forever Force, a mixture of all the forces, which he has collected and practiced with. Former Zoom wants to kill Black Flash so he can be "The True Flash", saving speedsters from Death. When Barry shows Hunter that his rage comes from a place that was twisted by Thawne, he runs and sacrifices himself so that Black Flash is trapped in the Forever Force (this is DEFINITELY going to come back up at some point soon)

Overall, a very good Volume. Definitely more to come in the next Volume, and I can't wait. Really nice to read a good Flash book again.
Recommend.

When in doubt ... add Rogues?

Williamson has had some highs and lows during his time as head writer for 'The Flash'. I'm not the first to say that he wrote Barry Allen as a whiner and Wally West (OG Wally) was brought back to do nothing but shed tears for what used to be. It wasn't compelling. It wasn't (arguably) fun. It wasn't a Flash tale anybody wanted to read.

How do you fix it? Go back to your basics. Feature 'The Rogues'. Hunter Zolomon is still running around as 'The True Flash'...pull him back into the story. Heck, bring back some Speed Force lore and give us some Black Flash racing. These are all things that lift the book up and focus it back on things that fans cared for.
--------
So many things about this volume were much needed corrections. Iron Heights has been a crutch. The Trickster storyline fixed that. Barry's interactions with the people around him has been portrayed as secretive. Sending ALL of the close Flash 'family' away pretty much ended that complaint. Even the inclusion of the new Universal Forces has been bemoaned. Remedy that problem with some Speed Force Barrier emergency surgery.

Bonus: 'Year of the Villain' and the Perpetua storyline may be wrecking the DC universe, but luckily this 'Force Quest' mini arc has been insulated from the crazy

Bonus Bonus: Zoom is The True Flash. Fight me!

Death and the Speed Force finds the Speed Force dying, and Black Flash escaping to eliminate the users of the other Forces. The Flash, being the hero, chooses to the protect the users of the other forces even at a cost to him and the Flash family.

This story is good. I don't think Barry's ever been more heroic during Williamson's run. The stuff with the Rogues is in the background, but this comes to the foreground with the final issue to set up the next arc. I also like that Williamson does pay off stuff that he's been doing throughout the series, going back to Flash War, and that's exciting.

Probably the thing I'm most dubious about is how this works on a macro level. , particularly his handling of these new forces, but I'll withhold judgment on those points until reading the next volume.

This is better than the last few volumes for sure, maybe it's because it feels like it's getting to the end of the storyline with the different forces. It might also be the pretty decent art by Sandoval along with the really nice coloring. Unfortunately Rafa didn't do the finale which is by Scott Kolins. Such a dramatic change in style. It's very disappointing.

The plot is a little redundant though. Feels like it's been done before, at least where it comes to Barry: He's trying to make up for his mistakes about how he treated his friends/other speedsters. Things change for sure by the end of this volume though.

The rogues are back and have some new costumes. I do like Captain Cold's. Weather Wizard's is a neat design, just not sure it completely fits. It's all meant to "revamp" the Rogues so they feel more threatening.

It seems that the Black Flash shares the same sentiments as myself and many other readers!

In this one, the Black Flash wants to get rid of all the other new Force users as it is affecting the speed force. Which is a convenient and semi easy way to do away with all that still force and sage force blah blah blah nonsense. I mean, I get that Joshua Williamson wanted to make a mark on the series by introducing some new elements, but these definitely just felt forced and redundant. So taking the steps necessary to eliminate them was a smart move.

While this is happening, we see the the Rogues powering up behind the scenes. They get an offer from Luthor which ties directly into the whole "year of the villain" event. It seems we will be heading straight into this storyline in the next volume.

Overall, an enjoyable read, if only because it gets rid of the unnecessary forces.

The pay-off for this sometimes meandering plot arc works better than many of its earlier instalments. The Black Flash is the main antagonist, and away from his (its?) usual role so that things aren't entirely straightforward. Many aspects of the previous episodes finally come together and there's some good use of Zoom in the final few episodes, building up to a satisfying conclusion. Against this, we have the 'Year of the Villain' subplot, which here sees Kid Flash and Avery rounding up B-list villains, presumably psyching themselves before they face the big guns. Clearly, that's just building things up for Vol. 13, but it does so in an entertaining manner.

When Williamson is good, he's okay. He's no Mark Waid but then almost nobody writing for the big two these days is. I'm sorry, it doesn't matter how good you are on The Flash, you'll always be compared to Waid. It is unfair, but he's the gold standard. Same goes for Hulk and Peter David or Thor and Walter Simonson.

This story is just sorta in between. It's not great but it is not godawful like this Trickster story. Which was complete dreck. This one has some sort of redeeming value. But it will never be as meaningful to me as Terminal Velocity or Dead Heat.

Close to being a conclusion to the force quest storyline, the several volume arc is really spending its wheels. The rogues get new looks and powers, but their time comes later. You get answers for why Zoloman did what he did, and he tries to sacrifice for the greater good. I don't want to discredit a artist, but the Scott Kolins art really doesn't do it for me, and even the Black Flash involved doesn't do more than chance our heroes. I'm over these new forces

I found this volume a bit mediocre, BUT Williamson seems to have finally changed his approach to writing Barry here, making him more positive and willing to work with others. There's also a pretty significant reveal regarding Zoom's backstory that, not only feels like a natural conclusion, but helps him standout from being just a lesser Reverse-Flash. The series is improving, I just hope these improvements stick around.

This volume has done what the previous few have failed to do. It stuck the landing. Williamson is a great writer and creates really interesting situations for the Flash family. The Black Flash racing Barry for the other forces while Zoom is messing around with his allies creates a lot of tension while also being able solve these problems in unique ways. Worth the read and intrigued to see where the story goes from here. Grade: B+
