Not what I expected when I bought the book, but pretty good. I'd say sort of shades of The Puppet Masters with a tiny bit of Invasion of the Body Snatchers and maybe just a bit of Alien...but on Earth of course, well this Earth...or well, maybe not. It could be one sort of like this one but then who can tell I mean with infinite Earths and universes and Quantum immortality getting involved... Well, you maybe, sort of, almost, kind of get the idea....

Crap, just read it.

Sheesh.

It's awesome, but you're gonna hate him for his CLIFFHANGERS.

This one has a bit of dark humor , and I love the way Evan makes a joke of himself,no less intentionally calling himself a hack writer who can't figure out which theme to write on.😆.That's the first time that he has done this and I found it extremely amusing, And I'm pretty sure that this is gonna be a series, I look forward to the next book. Evan is a good writer but there is one thing I don't like, the CLIFFHANGERS.The Silver wings series was ended in a cliffhanger, and he never wrote a new book. If you like thrillers and sci fi then I suggest that you read his books, but it you hate CLIFFHANGERS then do whatsoever but read the Epilogue, cause he'll make you burn in the end, wanting to know what happened afterwards. Ya listenin' there Mr.Currie??

Not even a full story

This book is like an action scene found in all of Currie's books. As part of a book, these scenes make a book hard to put down. As an entire book, it's exhausting. No character development, no real plot, and no world building makes the book a major disappointment.

Evan Currie has an amazing gift for action-packed mil-sf with great characters. Here he kicks off a new series (it darn well better be a series) where we find out that there are parallel worlds, where things are just a little different, like what you had for breakfast different, and there are alternate woods, where things are more different like the asteroid missed the dinosaurs different. But through all of them, there's a battle going on between the living and the malign creatures that somehow can transfer consciousness from one form to another, killing and reanimating everything they touch. And of course, we find out the hard way, when a crippled human warship from another "realm" pops into our solar system just ahead of a ship full of scourge ridden creatures and survivors of both crash on Earth.

One problem sf often faces is why we travel light years and find humans speaking English. Currie has solved that neatly, because his main character comes from Earth, just not quite this one. When the Allied Realms Marine Corporal climbs out of his escape pod in the middle of the Everglades, he doesn't know that the Scourge is close behind, but the impact of its pod makes it clear to him, Sarah, the biologist researcher that first gets to his craft, and the US Marines heloing into the scene. The Scourge needs life forms to transform into living drones, and unfortunately for Earth, the glades are prime property for alien invaders looking for a vacation spot.

Actually there are several locals and scenarios going on that we switch into, and they're all driven by fast action and characters you immediately bond with, which is the critical component in a tale like this. Even the president of the United States doesn't seem like a bad guy to have around in a crisis. Currie pokes fun at himself with a comment made by the president that he's found himself in the middle of a story by a hack writer that can't make up his mind which script to go with. Currie is anything but a hack, in fact, he's one of the best mil-sf writers in today's market.

Mil-SF is supposed to keep things simple with an existential threat that can't be negotiated with except through superior firepower and a band of brothers (and sisters) that will stand together against all odds. That's what makes it so much fun, and a relief from the complexities of the real world. But sometimes the author throws in a bit to chew on, like the civics lessons in Heinlein's Starship Troopers. Here, Currie has created an array of infinite realities, where you know that any action might have different consequences on other worlds and that the fight is of infinite dimensions, leaving the reader to wonder how we deal with the knowledge that any win is only a win in the here and now, and that maybe that's enough.

Highly recommended.

This novel did not live up to the great promise both the author and the plot description promised.

Normally I loved parallel/alternative worlds but not in this case. There wasn’t nearly enough alternative/parallel worlds explored and when it was mentioned I just found it confusing. The novel would finish a big battle and then jump to an alternative world were the fight ended differently so the main baddie could have a one-liner. Also, most of the parallel/alternative worlds centered on the aliens attacking the current earth and not actual different worlds.

The action and battles were good but far too American. Aliens attack Earth yet somehow most of the battles/landings occur in American territory. I understand Currie wanted to write to his demographic but come on!!!!! It’s also weird as I’d expect this from an American author not a Canadian one.

The characters were very generic and one-dimensional. I hated that the female fighter pilot was nicknamed Toots. Even though she acknowledged how she hated her nickname and wanted to be recognized for more than her gender this didn’t lessen the stupidity of it. It felt like Currie added this to emphasize her gender as apparently a woman can’t be more than a just woman. She can’t have personality, hopes, dreams, or desires… she is just a WOMAN.

The audiobook quality wasn’t great. The voice actor was very monotone and I found myself either falling asleep or my mind was wandering throughout it. I ended up missing portions of the battles as my mind found other, more interesting things to think about. Normally I would rewind the audiobook but I just didn’t care enough.

Overall I wouldn’t recommend this novel. If you’re interested in Evan Currie I’d try his Hayden War Saga as that’s an amazing series.

I love my mil-fi, I love the Apocalypse Troll, and this is a nice call out to it.

Unfortunately, it lost a full star of rating because of the quantum-based premise. It's, on paper, an interesting idea. Unfortunately, if you stop to really think about what is explicitly implied, then the story ultimately shouldn't matter, which immediately detract from your implication in it. The bad guys are original and well written, but if you stop at any point to reflect on their nature, you should stop caring. Or not. Or both (of course, it's quantum, so it's both at the same time).

This is why the comparison to David Weber's Apocalypse Troll is good. The premise is essentially similar, but Weber's basic premise gets you more engaged.

Mind you, this is a fairly good story - if you can remove some of the "quantum" aspects. It's story like this that make you have the Everettian Interpretation of Quantum mechanics.

Great Book! Starts fast and keeps going the whole way through. Modern USA weapons vs. Advanced alien/quantum tech - reminds me of the movie Battleship (which had some hokey bits, but a WWII BATTLESHIP vs. alien spaceships was pretty darn awesome! Same goes here - really love the authenticity of the weapon systems, ships, etc. Well Done.
However... the editing was poor. Incorrect words used, wrong tense, etc. At least a dozen or more instances. It feels like whoever did the final edit did not really have a good grasp of the English language... not sure what happened there. Fix that and this book is easily 5 Stars. Looking forward to the next in the series!

So yeah, this story is a keeper!

Wow! Apart from the editing errors this book was outstanding! Quantum Mechanics weirdness? Check. Marines being Marines? Check. Politicians humbled. Check. This had the feel of Super Human with regards to immediate and nonstop action from start to finish. However, I like the multiverse concept as the backdrop in this book much more and the possibilities it leaves open are pretty much limitless. Pun intended. The main characters stand out and are memorable; I’d like to see much more of them. I do wonder if the page count is wrong though. It did not feel like 440 something pages long.

Great read very similar to David Weber

I really like the jumping around so just speak from different points of view it helps break up the book so it's not a monologue and it gives you different perspectives at different time frames the story with its quantum immortality is a very interesting concept I did enjoy the action scenes some of the descriptions were a tad off such as the helicopter uh-1 is a Huey helicopter but I enjoyed the story very much I hope there are more as it was left on a cliffhanger

Imaginative nonstop action

Liked the author's self depricating humorous line: "Whoever is writing the script we’re living through can’t decide on a theme. Confusing hack writer."
I've been reading several of this author's different storylines and can definitively say that he's an extremely prolific and imaginative writer.
Very bloody and violent mix of sci-fi and horror (the latter being much less attractive to this reader).
My biggest disappointment is that this new unique storyline takes him away from the story of Odysseus.

Excellent Story

Excellent Story. Definitely a different take on immortality and a frightening one. Thought provoking and scarry. Great action. This could be the start of a new series. One part science fiction, one part horror.
You'll love it. I did.
There were several misspelled words and editing errors that were a bit of a distraction. It would be a much smoother ride if they were corrected.

A fun romp through about 4 or 5 genres.

A fun romp through about 4 or 5 genres. I hope this is a great introduction to a new series by Mr. Currie - he hasn’t failed to entertain me yet!
As the author himself writes, he hits Alien Invasion, Naval Warfare, Zombie, Monster movie and multiverse all in one book - only a ‘hack writer’ (Mr Currie’s words) or a genius (mine) could have pulled it off!

Story is mostly spanning one intense day. Pods from alternative world crash down to our Earth in what looks like a meteor strike. In one part few alternative world Marines fight horror movie abomination in other we get naval and air battle on the Pacific with unknown vessel.
Great fast paced action story with our technology versus advanced unknown.
The origin of the enemy is a new and interesting concept that gives versatility and unpredictability.

This is so much strange book. A lot of action A lot of cool characters.

I like alternative street History. I like military Science fiction. I like not having Some kind of cheap romance in the middle of a book. I like everything about this weird Story. I would love to hear and read more stories of the regal marines and the US Marines from our time and planet that would go on with them.

Really good story line

Not your run of the mill story, a lot of unexpected twists and turns. Unfortunately there are many loose ends that will have to be confronted in the books that are sure to follow. And I assure you that I will be purchasing them as soon as they are available.

A really good, original story told well. Strong characters, in remarkable but conceivable (...almost) situations. The story and characters build well throughout.

I found it easy to read and, even though it could probably have survived one more proofreading, the story easily takes you past any minor errors.

A nice quick, fun read if you like a bit of action sci-fi. It is, however, seriously in need of some editing. If anybody did proof-read it, I think they might have given up after reading the first third of the book as from that point there is a spelling mistake or, more often, just the wrong word used, every couple of pages or so.

Not sure what I think about the book. The “enemy” is outside my understanding. At least what they are. It definitely kept me captivated, but got confused by all the different characters. There was unfortunately not enough pages to develop the characters. Wondering whether a sequel is coming any time soon.

Great story. Short ending

This was a great setup for a series. However the slow build up is abruprly ended short. What happened in the various events? San Francisco ended open, we never learnt about china impact or middle east, did they sink the contact in pacific?
The story was good but just ends short. You are left wanting more.

Beginning to end this book is captivating. I was worried about the parallel worlds being too much and basically read this because of the author. I'm glad I did. It is filled with great characters and situations that are heart stopping. Well worth the time I might need in therapy and all that. At land, at sea, California to the FL Everglades. It is a mighty book with serious punch.

Currie scores again

As with all of his books Evan Curries created wonderful characters that draw you in. Combined with non stop action The Infinity Affliction looks to be another spell binding series. Read this and you’re hooked. A great work.

Good fast read

Interesting concept with decent character development for an action story. The pace was quite good without too much of the tedious air warfare chatter so many of these story types have. I look forward to the next installment.

Cool Premise

A cool look into a new Currie universe or universes. An interesting premise but most important of all, a good, fast moving story. A quick read. I hope he does the next one soon!

Weird ride ...

Good action scenes and description of weapons & tactics used but obviously only a teaser for what may be a series that we can only hope will explain the title and premise more fully.

Another series is born...

I just really enjoy these books. Thought it was going to be a similar villain to past books, but this one differentiated itself in a pleasantly villainous way. Obviously, there are an INFINITE number of sequels possible.
