Ok stories but in serious need of editing. Way too many mistakes, some things seemed well researched while other parts were riddled with glaring errors. Such as flicking off the safety on their glock. Glocks don’t have safeties. When I was in the service you NEVER referred to a magazine as a clip. Every one says “lots” a lot. A lot of little things just irritated me with their redundancy.
LJ (Larry) Martin – Repairman Series 1-10 – The Repairman Complete Series – Reviewed 6/6/20 – Read 5/25-6/6/20 When you need the best to fix your unfixable problems, Call the Repairman!
Iraqi, October 2005, Desert Freedom. Mike Reardon has been there for the last week, leading a select group of men out gathering intelligence in the forward positions. Now everyone knows what that really means, knocking down doors and going thru possessions to find intel that will secure the area. When Mike hears the voice of a young Iraqi woman, that really surprises him. She is a beautiful woman, and he knows that it is unusual for her to speak to him. Even as beautiful as she is, he is suspicious as this is not the norm. Well, she does not appear to have the hidden telltale bomb, but she does continue to speak to him. It seems that she is one of the brash young women that just wanted to speak with an American man. Then as they were talking his unit’s interpreter, Tariq arrives, and it seems he is quite upset. He cautions the woman that she should not be speaking with a man. Even though Mike interjects that they were doing no wrong! The woman and her friend take off like a scalded cat.
A couple of days later, Tariq tells Mike that he got the girl in trouble. Mike questions him as to why she should be in trouble as they were not alone, and she was chaperoned. One of the laws of the people is that she has now committed a crime of Infidelity, she will have to pay. Her family is ready to give her punishment. Mike asks what that would be, Tariq, states that she could be stoned. Knowing that he has a patrol scheduled for that afternoon, he resolves to add her home to his list. When he is told to not interfere, Mike determines to set the record straight and protect her. Going against orders he arrives, but he is too late. Now Mike is in trouble because one of the men in the group stoning the young woman is an officer… Mike is rushed and to protect his men, he fires, killing the one in the uniform of the Iraqi Army. Even though some of the men were armed Mike is court-martialed. With the help of one of the officers on the panel, Mike is given a general discharge. Now Mike and his buddy, Pax is paired up to help people that have problems using the talents that the Marines taught them, search and destroy while fixing unfixable problems! and the story begins…
What did I like? I have read a lot of the books that Larry has written and from those, I knew that I would love this boxset. This is the complete Repairman series (10 books) and it is filled with incredible action and emotional content. Anyone that has a fondness for military-type stories will love them. Larry’s appreciation of history is showcased in each, with the research being only top level. When you read a book that is written by an author that does the depth of research that Larry does, you know that the book is going to be outstanding. Larry has written about 50 books, including several different genres, and short stories. He has his hands in various pies figuratively and literally. With book gardening, book covers, cooking, and videos all expertly done. He and his wife, Kat (also an author) have traveled all over together. That is just the tip of the iceberg for this active couple!
What will you like? Well, if you want a book that is going to pull you into the middle of all the exploits, and every page will give you all the details about anything going on. The action is beyond the imagination, with descriptions so detailed giving you the sensation of standing next to Pax and Mike. All the books are a touch of history with the expert knowledge of the areas. The research shows on every single page, from the smallest detail to the biggest explosion. Beautifully written storylines that grip your emotions from the first page. I had trouble trying to read these, as I just could not put them down until I knew the endings. Many, many hours of enjoyment for me. I highly recommend these books for anyone that loves action and has no problems with their heart, as there are numerous heart-stopping moments. An excellent read for all!
The story is good and not over the top. The editing is awful. Poor grammar, inconsistent (Pax leg is shortened by 1/2" , 1" , 1 1/2" changes constantly) , etc. While an M4 will shoot a .223, the 5.56 is used by the mi!itary. .223 is underpowered. A Flick does not have a thumb safety, it is known for the integral trigger safety. Most absolutely appalling is the author refers to WAYLON Jennings as Whalen. Multiple times! Please get a fact checker and editor. The land in the middle East is a desert, not a dessert. Believe me, it is not a sweet treat.
In Mike Reardon, author L.J. Martin created the perfect anti-hero. The ex-Marine received a "general" discharge after his decade working special ops and other assignments for Uncle Sam. The details attest to the murkiness surrounding Reardon's departure. He allowed his sense of fair play and humanity enter into the chain of command. He made a choice that by all rights, especially those who read of his post-military exploits, appeared the correct one. But to his superiors, killing a ranking Iraqi officer required punishment. With prejudice. Fortunately for readers, Reardon won the influence of a well-placed officer and escaped with minimal repercussion. Martin summarizes this bit of character history at the start of each of his Repairman installments, right about the same time as he mentions the soldier's affection for his team and gives their history. There's Skip, the massive warrior with dark memories that sometimes bubble up and cause anguish. And there's Pax, who realized a thriving post military career in cyber security and took a bullet for Reardon in combat and saved his life. The trio, and others, come to the rescue of folks who have few options but need discretion and a heavy hand throughout "The Repairman: The Complete Series." I read the series after becoming enticed through a Facebook promotion. Initially, or maybe as usual, I sought distraction. The first several installments are relatively short and straightforward. Reardon gets a mission and uses his skills to satisfy his customer. But Martin appears to be testing his character, just getting a feel where he wants to take this shoot first and ask questions later operator. Each installment of "The Repairman" gets increasingly sophisticated plotwise. As Martin expanded his writing horizons, I had to put the book down more often. His action sequences, already rather robust, developed intensity. Consequence and repercussions for the main characters increased. Reardon puts everything on the line. He's just a guy who has certain tools at his disposal. But his determination keeps him from allowing the huge hurdles he encounters from proving fatal. Somehow. In the final two installments, one involving North Korea and the other a cruise ship destined to become another terrorist statement, kept me more than involved. I had to take a break at some of the peak points in the action. And I rarely do that. I soldier on. With Reardon, however, Martin makes the fight personal. As a reader, I felt that. He took me along on the op. Martin is a writer in the Mickey Spillane vein, short sentences and no wasted words. Sometimes I'd go back over a passage and scour it for details, discovering that I indeed missed an important point. That, if nothing else, sold me on Martin's style. He's no Dashiell Hammett. But then again, nobody matches that particular set of storytelling talents. Of course, I have a couple nitpicks. Apostrophes pop up occasionally at the wrong time, and a few political tangential political rants popped up out of the blue. But minor stuff.
This really was a Book with many stories within the covers, I had not realised quite how many there were, but they were cleverly written with the stable characters running throughout all the books. I have read each one and am pleased with each one, it is nice to read a book that is not full of unnecessary swearing or sex. Too many books these days have too much of this and it detracts from the story. These books were very well written and although a little repetitive with information that had been told in the first book, if the books were read singularly then you would need the information. I bought the Complete Series so I was fully conversant with the characters and their past escapades together. I would recommend the Complete Series to anyone who likes to read a continuation of a story within a story and all the characters, and it was certainly value for money as it has taken me a month to read all of the stories, but they are compelling and mysterious and conclusive and would read other books by the L J Martin. My only hope is that Amazon who I got the book from will be willing to refund my money, but even if they do not, I will not be unhappy as I have enjoyed every book.
I was trying to like this book. It had a lot going for it. But then, so many errors, typos, just glaring misteaks (yes, I always mispell mistakes). You can see the notes that I highlighted on GoodReads. I got about half way through the combined set of Repairman, and just gave up. I thought this guy was some sort of accomplished writer? Probably never had a printed book, only digital, and more likely, indie. I have nothing against indies, I’m all for this. I push independent authors as much as I can. I can not stand, nor will accept, any author with so many errors. I have written to many Amazon/Kindle writers with mistakes in their books, and most of them have been honest, kaka happens. But this, this is just wrong. Not a copy editor missing something, or the wife not catching. JUST WRONG WRONG WRONG
Definitely under prices at 99p for the whole of the Repairman series. Absolutely brilliant
Right. How do I start to reviewing this amazing series ? .......Ok . The plot for each book was extremely well thought out and the dialogue was spot on. The research was obviously extremely thorough and the characters very believable. I intend to read more of MY Martin's books immediately and I suggest everyone reading this review does the same ( after reading the Repairman series first ,of course)
I like Martin's products , read entire Repairman series straight thru.Feel like I could sit down and have an intelligent conversation with him.
I read about 25-30 books per month I just happened on to this book didn't know was a complete series uh but I enjoyed it but it's straight through I like detail and a book uh whether it's talking about the people are talking about story lines Very nice I recommend it to anybody that likes pulp fiction ...
Fun reading these books. There is overlap in each book because each book is a standalone event, however there is a strong sense of continuity. The final book, has a "Cast Of Thousands" but it is an exciting book to read. Some who are developed with many details are dispatched quickly with a bullet in the head, as the final action begins. Fun to see the development and continuity in each story, Best read in series.
From page one, it got interesting and then stayed there. I was hooked, easy to read, exciting with detail where necessary and tales of friendship, but throughout you just liked them and what they did and how they did it. Each story leading to the next, getting to late nights as I didn't want to put it down. In fact quite sad I won't be seeing Reardon tomorrow night. I will however be picking up some more books from Mr Martin, that's for sure.
The book (first of ten) starts with a 37-word sentence fragment (how is that even possible?), and it never gets any better. I know: I plowed through the second in the unrequited hope that it would. Setting aside the avalanche of grammatical and spelling errors, Mr. Martin’s work is almost entirely devoid of any compelling characters or even marginally interesting plot lines.
Came to my Kindle for free via Amazon Prime. It was over-priced.
Apart from crude plagiarism of Nick Stone and Jack Reacher, Ill written garbage peppered with numerous mistakes in continuity and even having one character Bo in two places and situations at the same time. Could have been ok except for tedious repetition and sexist treatment of women as objects with boobs and fannies.
I thoroughly enjoyed the characters, plots and action. Wish there were a lot more books in the series. For those folks who gave poor reviews because of language, most adults know and often use the "F word". And I'm quite certain that soldiers use it frequently. It's too bad you gave up on some great stories.
I grew to love Mike, Pax and the other recurring characters. I liked their take-no-prisoners attitude but also trying to do the right thing. Having grown up on the West coast so some of the places in the books were familiar. I’m hoping there will be more stories to look forward to.
IMO after being in the military, deputy sheriff, supervisor for a international agency and a training officer for security teams it gives me shudders when someone one says put another clip in a AK47 or a Glock. I was a cowboy in the back country in Idaho some 60 years ago and M1s had clips so come on Montana boy make it right
I wasn't sure if I liked the first book at the beginning, just wasn't too sure where it was going, but after reading further, I really got into the story. The rest of the series just followed on. Fast moving, interesting & full of action from start to finish. Expect a few late nights when you just have to finish another chapter
If you enjoy military type excitement this is for you. Ex military people 'find' things and people. All books set in different arenas which keeps you reading. Friendship and love are paramount as action for money and no regard for the bad guys keep the team busy.
Very good series. Enjoyed reading but the use of glocks and the terminology used is somewhat off. Too much calling different glocks fully automatic and in one instance taking the safety off on a glock just does not happen. Glocks do not have a safety you can flip off.
This was very entertaining and was difficult to put it down. I travel energy week SMS always looking for dingding to read on my kindle. I am going to look at some more of L.J. Martin books and see where it leads.
I read them all in The Repairman series in about a week. This man really knows how to write a thriller with compelling characters and plenty of action. I look forward to reading more of his books. Top-notch in every way!
I really enjoyed this book and I was really hoping to find a follow up book is in the process of being written. Non stop action all the way through. Stayed up late to finish the story. Well done
Got a problem? Who're you gonna call-the repairman?
Great series! Enjoyed the cast of characters who came to cover his back. It's amazing how far a Bail bondsman badge will take you. Martinwrites great action adventure book. Read 'em all!
Fun stories. And I have to say that I read the whole series. In several ways, it reads like an old detective story from the 40s, but it VERY much isn't. The premise is good and the important characters are well developed. The story line is plausible.
Very poor. This has everything wrong. Sexism, Racism, Ageism, fat shaming, technical inaccuracies, abysmal spelling, ie wearing a T shirt with “Molon Rabe” when the correct term is “Molon Labe”. Then explaining the meaning but repeating The wrong spelling. Not worth the 99p
Mike Reardon, The Repairman, is a bit like Reacher, with a trusted posse and a somewhat nebulous home base. Lots of firepower, fun detail twist, and a big dose of American justice.
I found the books intersting. A varied cast of true characters kept me wondering what trouble they would find and conquer next. I am sorry this was the complete series as I would love to know if they keep up the mercenary life or finally find contentment.
Great series and characters. Exciting and never dull. The only negative I have is poor gun terminology. They are “magazines” not clips. But beyond that the books were great!
I love long series in a collection. I have never read a book from the author and find the mix of humor and action refreshing. The stories hold your interest and I am sorry the last book has come to and end. I will definitely read more of his books.
A rollicking rapid kickem in the butt don't care if you don't like me very technical we write-up of some very possible real life adventures. Even I was tired by the time Reardon and Pax got home.
