Deep Within: A Robert Winchester Novel is the second book in the Robert Winchester series by author Douglas Dell, is a fantastic follow up to book one, Deep and Dirty: A Novel.

Robert Winchester is our hero, a rogue journalist that has been sort of ousted/disillusioned by the world of journalism today and thrown into The South by circumstances that are out of his control in the first book.

He is a respected veteran reporter that skulks around the fringes of the deep and dirty south in the darkest underworld of the criminal drug scene to reveal the true story of the corrupt cop, the corrupt and dirty politician or the not so squeaky clean community leader, Robert loves to dig up the dirt and splat it all over the front pages of the news.

On this occasion he is called in by a friend who knows only he can reveal the real truth of the war that is being waged in North Central Florida all the way down to Miami – and now appears to be connected to the glamorous and profitable world of horse racing via some very nasty people indeed.

Robert begins (or rather starts from where he left off before) investigating the controlling drug cartels in Florida who originate from both Mexico and Russia and whose deadly dealings impact the rural communities. The stench of corruption, power, drugs and death seep heavily into the worlds of law enforcement and the small-town politicians - drenching those who are either looking to fight this overwhelming stench of crime snuffing out their small towns; or are looking to profit from the depravity and lost souls that these drugs enslave, reaping huge power and profit without a single thought to their community (as introduced in book one).

The journey goes deeper in Deep Within as our questions are somewhat answered, Some of the the real faces behind the powerful crime syndicates are finally revealed after a roller-coasting build up that is nail-biting edge of the seat stuff . Only you, the reader, see the traps that are ready to be sprung and the betrayal of those that hang close to our hero, apparently innocently but are planning and executing a dangerous and deadly outcome on orders that have been issued from the main players of this ghastly game of life and death.

The way the drugs are couriered in and out of Florida is simply ingenious!
Like the first book Deep and Dirty, I loved the characters and the author Douglas Dell has written this book (as the first) to include some pretty fascinating characters with the actual guttural dialogue and terms the locals in these rural communities in the South use (THESE ARE NOT SPELLING MISTAKES PEOPLE) – also as a side note there is reference to this via an interview with the author done by The Southern Literary Review - a respected organization who “celebrates southern authors and their contributions to American literature We feature the classic writers who have defined southern literature, and we highlight emerging authors through interviews, profiles, and book reviews.”.
Fortunately, I’ve heard this local lingo, so I get it - but for some readers from outside these areas, keep an open mind as it can be a real education to discover a part of the Deep South that is not often seen or heard.

Also, I suggest you read the books in order as the stories are linked and you get used to the setting especially if you’re not familiar with the colorful characters and culture of the locals that is a “whole other world”. There are a few “aha” moments as the dots join up to complete the nearly finished picture of the first book.

I love this series because it’s cutting edge and authentic. It’s intriguing and clever. It’s also very real even though it’s cloaked in fiction. This is obviously an author who knows his stuff and has spent considerable time in or near the kind of people and circumstances that are in this story. I looked up a few factual resources that piqued my interest because of this series. I was horrified at this other world that I seemed to be so ignorant of but realize this could very well exist anywhere – not just in the Deep South.

I’m glad to have discovered Douglas Dell’s voice and his work because we need these types of stories to be told. There is a war out there, hidden from the rest of us, in a place that is often pooh-poohed as not as important or forward thinking as the rest of America, but this story shows us there’s poison in this land and it’s reaching all of us – regardless of our age, status, creed, color, poverty or wealth – it affects us all and right now we are choosing to ignore it.

WOW - the second book in the Robert Winchester Series is just WOW!
I reviewed book one Deep and Dirty and was impressed. Book two is even MORE impressive!

Having got used to the local's dialect of the small rural southern Florida town, in book one, it was a breeze this time around for me to dive into. I'm from a big city so these stories have been an eye opener for me as I just didn't believe these people existed. Seriously it's like I've been living on Mars or something. This is a whole "other world" experience. In book two, we are no so deep in the mud as our hero, freelance journalist Robert Winchester heads into the "black top" roads of Marion City after a quick detour via Daytona Beach, Florida and Las Vegas, Nevada (yep - it's a wide trip but necessary) to head back to Florida with an additional unexpected invitation to delve into some unfinished business in Brown Springs (the last book( that takes us smack bang into the high-end world of big money, horse-racing and heroin.

Robert is now dealing with the Big BAD Boys from Russia and Mexico who are spilling their blood, drugs, profits and corruption all over Miami and other parts of Florida. There are some real back-stabbing bitches in this one - fair weathered friends from Robert's past - who are now tainted with the taste of money and corruption and who have no scruples in setting up our hero for a big fall (off a balcony, some hope as there are no cliffs in Florida and Robert is getting too close to the truth here).

The story is indeed edgy. It's very cool too because the operation of how the drugs get in and out is slick and right under some very big noses (of the cop kind, not the drug-sniffing heroin users kind).
It's fast-paced and again, unique in the Douglas Dell story-telling style that is totally his to own. This is an engaging story, with a great winding plot that gets you so tightly wound that the spring literally breaks as the walls come tumbling down for all the bad boys.

I highly recommend this author to those looking for a book to read that is deep, well-written, accurate and full of realism and not fluff.

Roll on book three because you have a big fan here!
