Thirty Seconds to a Polite, Calm, Well-Behaved Puppy.30 seconds?Yes, 30 seconds. Bear with me for a moment, and I'll explain. :)Some people think that obedience training is the key to making a puppy well-behaved. They hope that by taking their puppy to a one-hour obedience class every week.... and maybe spending another hour each night practicing the commands, their puppy will be well-behaved.But the truth is that very little obedience training needs to be done with a puppy to get him to be well-behaved.That's right. Very little obedience training.Keep in mind that I've instructed obedience classes for over 35 years, so I certainly wouldn't say that unless it was true. The truth is that what a puppy needs most is to be RAISED the right way. Raising a puppy the right way includes some obedience training, yes. But teaching obedience commands like "Sit" or "Stay" only influences about 20% of the way your puppy ends up behaving. On the other hand, how you live with the puppy around the house every single day influences 80% or more of his behavior. And that's where the 30 seconds to a calm, polite, well-behaved puppy comes in!Respect Training for 30 Seconds to a Calm, Polite, Well-Behaved Puppy is a BALANCED training method that includes positive reinforcement for good behavior, plus corrections for unwanted behavior.I will show you which behaviors you should expect your puppy to do – and how to teach those behaviors and make sure that he does them.... every time.I'll show you which behaviors you should stop your puppy from doing – and how to stop him.Everything your puppy needs to know to be a top-notch canine citizen is included! Summary30 SECONDSRespect Training shows you how to be a reliable, trusted leader so your pup can relax and be a secure, confident follower. Then 30-second teachable moments are all you need for training. Your pup will enjoy it!CALMWith Respect Training your pup will pay attention to you and follow your directions. All the time. He’ll be relaxed and quiet, without pitching a fit or racing around the house if he sees or hears something. He’ll wait for you (his Respected Leader) to handle everyday events, and coexist peacefully with other pets.POLITERespect Training will teach your pup to always look to you for guidance. He’ll stop barking when told, accept house guests if you welcome them, and keep four feet on the floor without jumping on people. A polite pup sits, walks on a loose leash, waits for your permission before going through doors and gates, and goes to his bed when told. Obedience becomes a happy game that never ends. Respect Training shows you how to establish routines and patterns so your pup always knows what behaviors are expected. When your pup respects your leadership he’s happy to behave.WELL-BEHAVEDHe will stop making his own unacceptable decisions about what is OK and what isn’t.
I too have worked with dogs, and animals of all kinds, for 40+ years. It’s stunning to find a dog trainer who has discovered, through years of open-minded experience, the exact same things as have I. I could have written this book. There is only one agenda here, “what’s best for the pup.” I am a retired movie animal trainer and have, since Covid-19 shut down our industry, started teaching people privately how to work with dogs by first, respecting the species, then the individual and teaching the dog to do likewise. I’m so grateful! Now I don’t have to write a book. I simply advise my clients to read whichever of Ms Welton’s books seem most apropos, and we’ll go from there. Where has she been hiding? She’s probably been spending too much time with the dogs to flood social media with her awesomeness
This book offers great advice for first-time dog owners. Although I didn't use every suggestion or agree with every opinion, it was a great way for me to dive into a world I was unfamiliar with. As with most things, her strategies work as long is you're consistent. Good luck to any new dog moms/dads out there!
This was a quick and easy read and had some good tips for training a pup. Following the guidance in the book has helped me work with my dog on leash walking so far - her tips work if you stick to them.
After using the indoor leash obedience training taught by Michele Welton, I saw noticeable improvement in my dog seeing me as her pack leader. Training your dog begins with your mental adjustment to understanding the pack mentality of your dog. Once you establish they can trust you to be the leader, they will follow you.
Welton takes you step by step on how to achieve establishing yourself as your pet's leader.
As someone who is a dog trainer for a living, I can accurate say: Every dog owner needs this book! Michele Weldon has an excellent understanding of dogs; who they are, what they need, and how we can help them coexist with us harmoniously.
Well written. A quick easy to read guide for puppy training. Lots of great info especially for someone who has never trained a dog from the puppy stage!
It was an easy read with concrete advice on how to raise a puppy. Unfortunately, there is nothing groundbreaking and there is some information I disagree with.
