Humanity has long explored mysteries of their past. From the theories of Atlantis to the fabled stories of Greek Gods, most had been dismissed as fantasy and legend. When humanity discovered ‘the Orb’, such fairy tales came a little closer to having some potential truth. Even scratching the surface of the knowledge contained within this ancient technology granted an understanding of faster than light travel and a wild number of other luxuries.
Employing this newfound knowledge, humanity built the Gnosis, a highly advanced starship capable of long range travel and self-sufficient exploration. They would visit other solar systems, departing as pioneers into the unknown. But as excitement built with the people of Earth and the journey drew near, an alien race arrived in Sol, intent on stealing the Orb.
Now, with a hostile first contact initiated, humanity is thrust into universal conflict, one where other beings vie for powerful artifacts spread throughout the galaxy. As they conduct their first interstellar battle, they find themselves drawn into an intrigue they do not understand but must engage for if they do not, they may well face an opponent they cannot defeat.

I wanted to give this series a five-star review, but I just couldn't. I found the writing to be so bad that I was constantly rereading sections because I didn't understand what I had just read. The writer needs to study up on the negative effects of using passive voice. He also needs to be careful how often he uses pronouns such as he, she, they, etc. I very often didn't know who he was referring to unless I went back and reread what I had just read. By the end of the series, it was so bad, I just wanted it to be over. I also think that the story could have been a little more character-driven and a little less technology driven. However, that said, I enjoyed the concept of the books. I think the story could have been covered in five books instead of nine books. I am not at all sure that I will be reading any more books by this author.
Not a bad read generally enjoyed it would have been less enamoured if I'd paid the full amount for each book in the set. Some good ideas, nice to have most of the aliens friendly for once. It just got a bit repetitive especially the space combat scenes. The main story is over in the first six books, and the seventh takes it in a new direction but the author seems then to have had enough and rather rapidly ends the series with a frustrating everything is now going to be wonderful ending. Would have liked to have seen more of the main characters doing some of the actual exploration they originally planned.
Unready, untried, under armed, humanity and the crew of earth first star ship are thrown into the breach.
The starship Gnosis do the first test of FTL ENGINES, going to the orbit of Pluto. To discover Earth is under attack of aliens. This is a great yarn of people struggling to understand a galaxy we had no idea existed. Lots of action, suspense, drama and good ole fashion ( lets get done)! Definitely a great read.
I found this series to be a decent read, though occasionally was jarred by incorrect word choices. When I hit those I tend to stop and try to figure out how that choice was made. I also noticed the quality of the editing relaxed a little later in the series. There were a few assumptions made early on that were annoying as things just don’t work that way. It did keep me entertained.
The story evolves around the discovery of ancient technology from an extinct alien race. The good guys face off against space pirates, a fanatic cult, computerized AIs, and many other challenges in their pursuit of the pieces of the alien technology. There is much violence and a politically correct disproportionate number of strong female leaders. Overall, the book is an action packed quick read with well-developed characters.
Very exciting and totally interesting story of the future we can look forward to. Completely different and full of the future we can look forward to. This will help you get the future of space travel and the people who will be willing to take the time to travel to various places. I highly recommend this series! The story keeps you going through the trials that they face.
Enjoyed the series but was definitely thinking it could use some proofreading and editing. ie: smiles happen way more often than smirks, incomplete sentences, missing punctuation, odd word choices all of which detracted from fully enjoying the reading. I would still read other books by this author and hope to find them better edited.
Very enjoyable set of books. They could ALMOST stand alone as individual books. Only suggestion is for the author to look up the definition of "smirk". I don't think it means what you think it means. But, that aside, I found myself staying up pretty late reading.
I really wanted to give these novels a better rating. The action was engrossing and got me through all 9 books. However they are sorely in need of a good editor/proofreader. From missing words to words out of place, and don't get me started on the overuse and misuse of the word smirk instead of smile. Decent books but not outstanding
This set of books overs a whole gamut of issues found in today's society, from the religious beliefs i.e. zealots and political machinations. However, what I found fascinating are the technological potentials which are just out of our reach at the moment (perhaps)? A damned good read.
I like science fiction where the people are realistic with many facets to their lives. Military action painted very vivid encounters make it conceivable, eve to Retired Military readers.
Decent writing but lots of errors, extra words, left out words, and words used in the wrong context. It made reading the detailed scenes a little aggravating. The long story line was nice though. There were a lot of battle scenes which is to be expected in a military saga.
Not a bad adventure series. There are quite a few editing mistakes, improper punctuation , exrta words in sentences , etc. If you can overlook that its a decent easy distraction from reality.
Action packed space warfare series with interesting characters and entertaining episodes. I read the box series and enjoyed the development of the characters as well as the interesting themes in each book. Good reading during the pandemic.
Good story but I have some caveats. One: How did Earth get the first Orb? Two: Why does every one have a wasp name ? No ethnic groups allowed. Three Are the Pahxen and human s genetic ally compatible? Four : Why is every alien race humanoid? Five
I have just begun breaking into these space operas and must say my first foray into them has peaked my interest. I look forward to reading more by this author and others within the genrea.
I have enjoyed reading these books it was nice to get them all in one set and be able to go from beginning to end without a break. This is a well thought out and cohesive narrative.
This is a fantastically well written series by John Walker. I could not stop reading. Great story, great character development, and technologically exciting.
I thought John did a great job developing the characters in this series, enough to want to keep on reading to see what happens next. It was a very well written saga which who knows ? It could happen some day . Enjoy it
Interesting storyline and cast of characters that kept be going through all the books. The editing might have been a bit better and it seems there were when words might have been missing or the wrong text used but overall it was fast paced and kept me turning the page to see what would happen.
Keeps your attention. Super good read! I would recommend everyone who reads SciFi read these. You don't want to miss the action mixed with the descriptions.
