Michelle MacQueen is a USA Today bestselling author of love. Yes, love. Whether it be YA romance, NA romance, or fantasy romance (Under M. Lynn), she loves to make readers swoon. The great loves of her life to this point are two tiny blond creatures who call her "aunt" and proclaim her books to be "boring books" for their lack of pictures. Yet, somehow, she still manages to love them more than chocolate. When she's not sharing her inexhaustible wisdom with her niece and nephew, Michelle is usually lounging in her ridiculously large bean bag chair creating worlds and characters that remind her to smile every day - even when a feisty five-year-old is telling her just how much she doesn't know.
I did like this read overall, but I was a tad frustrated at times. You'd think I'd eat up a fish-out-of-water fae portal storyline with deception, romance and intrigue...but I don't know...it kind of fell a tad flat for moi.
The more I think about it I did like Brea's character for the most part, but maybe it was the YA-ness of the story that kind of made some of the dialogue a tad cheesy and predictable to me?
And I mean come on- from jump all I kept thinking was that
Maybe will read on to the next...but maybe not because I kind of have a feeling I know where the story is going to go already. Alona is a Fae princess without powers. Upon her 18th birthday, she will lose her royal status and be forced to move into the serving class, for a princess without magic can never be an heir. On the journey to visit her new employer, she is snatched from a hot spring bath and disappears.
Brea is a regular girl who’s just returned to school from her stay in a mental institution. She’s always seen things, strange things, that aren’t there. People with pointy ears. Or fangs. Then one day she nearly kills her best friend and is put away. Until a man with violet eyes who smells like sunshine takes her to a different world, and she disappears.
Brea is left to find out who she is, where she is, and why she is important to them. She’s also being pursued by two different Fae brothers raised in separate kingdoms. Griffin is the friendlier, sunnier of the two. And Lochlan is the darker, bloodier brother. Of course I preferred Lochlan, because give me a dark, brooding, sexy Fae any day of the week, ya know?
I love Fae books, and as this goes it’s pretty good, though it does take a bit to get into the story.
The only real issue I have with the book is how quickly Brea seems to accept her fate at being snatched away and taken to Fae land. She resists a bit, but then, all of a sudden, she’s jokey and laughing and whatnot. Stockholm Syndrome anyone? I’m used to my heroines putting up more fight, especially when they realize they’ve been in a straight jacket for no reason and their entire lives are a lie.
I’m going to give it a go and try part two eventually and hope the high ratings bear fruit.
It wasn’t all that interesting to begin with, but when I started on chapter 8, I finally realized what it was that bothered me all along with this book.
Looking back, I realize from the prologue (which also completely turned me off) to several events that take place until I quit reading, you can CLEARLY tell there are 2 different authors. They have completely different voices for Brea and their storytelling is completely different. One moment Brea is a bit more serious and mature and the next she’s making a fool of herself and stuttering out cool, sweet, totally’ and asking ‘where can I get some chow around here?’
It just wasn’t my cup of tea. The writing wasn’t terrible, but the pacing was slow and in every single thing it hit just shy of the mark.
If I could give this 0 stars, I would. This book was incredibly boring and pointless. I didn’t even finish it lol. I only listened to it because it was free on Spotify.
I received this book as an ARC for my honest review.
I love love love love love love this book!!!!!! I could not stop reading it and I’m dying for book 2 to see how this is going to finish. It is amazing. Okay so we have a girl who is told she’s one flew over the cuckoo’s nest. All she wants to do is be with her bestie and live on the farm for a quiet normal life. One day at school and she pretty much wakes up in an entire different adventure as a man sweeps in to take her away. It takes some time to find out who and why Brea is, but it is a read worthy adventure. The characters are complexing and I want to know more of what has got them to this point in the story (hint hint for a novella). The world of the Fae was so eloquently and colorfully described. I felt myself driven to keep reading to see what was to happen next and I had a hard time deciding if sleep was for the birds or if I had time the following day to continue reading. 5 stars to a book I will read again, to a new series set in fantasy, and one I will be recommending to all my book friends.
I received this novel in exchange for an honest review.
It took me a long time to get into this one. I found myself putting it down often to read something else but once I finally get into it I did enjoy it. The writing is wonderful and the plot is intriguing that once it picks up you can’t put it down! There are a few things in here I’m not the biggest fan of... like drugs. But I really love the LGBT aspects and am ready for the next installment.
Sorry, this book is not my cup of tee. Brea is so immature, that I could not stand it. Her feelings and thoughts changed every single second. The plot is good, but the realisation not so. While I was reading I felt like Brea is delusional- one chapter brave and strong, and in the next as she is a totally different person. That's why I do not like collaborations.
Everyone thinks that Brea Robinson is crazy, herself included. When she seems to have killed her best friend it feels like her life is over. Suddenly she's swept through a portal to a completely different world by a man who says his name is Griffin O'Shea and that his queen wants to see her. When other royals show interest in Brea she wonders what's so special about her. One thing is clear: she can trust noone and nothing in this strange fae world.
I've read several books in this series before, but I haven't read the first before now. It's great to see how it all began and how the characters behaved before they knew each other. I already have a lot of information of what's to come, but I don't remember all the details. Usually it takes a while to get to know a new fantasy world, but I'm already familiar with it and that's nice. I'm looking forward to reading the whole first trilogy within this series, so I have two more books to read!
This book was boring boring boring. I was listening to the audiobook and I had to DNF with only four hours left. I cannot take the constant bringing up of modern day items.
This woman brought up Starbucks, Dunkin, the Witcher, iPhones, and even said “you guys should get some cell towers out in the faeries lands”
On top of all of this, the main male characters are not interesting. Their names are stupid. They have no redeeming qualities. And the entire political system doesn’t make any sense, and I was just extremely bored.
This book is like if I asked myself “if a 12 year old wrote ACOTAR. What would it be like?”
She tried to make the main character edgy or “ not like other girls” it was just so annoying. Everything is so predictable. There is nothing new here there is nothing unique. Anything you may like about this book you can find the same thing, but so much better in another book.
For the love of God, do not waste your time like I wasted those precious 7 hours.
I had to stop this is so painfully bad. I just couldn’t do it. How did anyone get through this book??? The fact that this was written by two authors and was still this bad and got published.
There’s noooo character building. She goes crazy but her best friend is a football player and three minutes in all the sudden he’s basically killed out of nowhere by another football player which somehow Brea forgets in two seconds and believes that she killed him somehow… I tried reading a bit more after that but it was so difficult I couldn’t keep going.
Also the switch between worlds was so abrupt, quick and so different it was hard to believe I was even reading the same book. Like we get a few page into to a fae world and a princess and are immediately thrown into modern world of humans it’s just very jarring and wasn’t a smooth transition.
Blatant, neutered, repetitive fanfic of ACoTAR - that even MENTIONS ACOTAR!!!! The fae here are prim and proper instead of sensual, can lie, and aren’t even making bargains so they are basically freaking vanilla fairies. Also the amount of repetition in this book is crazy. Main character is alone, she misses her bestie, does she belong in an asylum, so and so love interest is hot, she’s worthless.. blah blah blah! I only gave it 2 stars because it was pleasant to listen to something so bland while I was sick. PS the narrator’s man voice was SO ANNOYING!!! I couldn’t stand it!
This brought me straight back to my Trylle/Wings era, and I am not mad about it! 🙃 (Humans going in a portal to the Fae world 🌈)
3,5/5 ⭐️
Plenty of world building to do, and loooots of character development to create for the 2nd book, but overall it’s a fun book with great banter! I loved all the nerdy references (HP, GoT, LOTR, etc) 🤌🏼
The magic system has yet to be explained. The reason why the *villain* is a bad bad person (I honestly still don’t get it) and the reason why she is so ✨spechiol✨ will hopefully be revealed in the 2nd book.
Also, nobody talked about Griffin’s ability to just create a portal where he wants?? Like whyyyy do they travel days in dangerous nature if he can just magically transport them to their destination?!
Portal to Faerie. Rival brothers. Captain of the Guard type vs a Princely type. Only one horse. Caretaking. Lochlann Treaty vibes, especially with Olivia King as the narrator 🤩 Faerie is a pansexual realm and has LGBQT+ characters. There's mystery and Intrigue. Who can you trust? What's real? This is a really interesting and exciting. I definitely recommend it!
This story was so different from your typical fae story. The kingdoms and magic were so unique and twisty. There are two different love interests. And no one is who they seem! I love how you get to experience the story through the human-going-through-a-portal perspective. Brea makes some rather cringeworthy mistakes, but it makes her all the more endearing. It’s hard not to get into spoiler territory, so I’ll leave it there. If you like compelling, twisty plots, magic, romance, and fae, this book is for you.
I love this story! It mixes present day, in our world, with a very magical Fae Realm. The characters are strong and very...colorful. The world building is perfect. I am left hanging and can not wait to read the next book in the series!
I stumbled across this on Spotify as I was looking for something to listen to at work. Added bonus, the first book was free!
I should start by saying that typically YA can fry my brain slightly as I do tend to find it a little wishy washy on substance (not all YA just to be clear but most).
Synopsis: A human girl with a troubled past. A fae prince from a stolen kingdom. When he steals her away to the fae realm, there is no going back to her old life. In the land of Fargelsi, everything seem sbeuatiful, stunning and captivating. But we all know nothing is ever as it seems. The three fae lands are on the brink of war and Brea Robinson is caught between these worlds. As the motivations of those around her become clear, Brea must decide if she can trust the handsome prince who abducted her, or if she might be safer across the wastelands and swamps, in a land in desperate need of the magic she doesn't know she has.
This was a little tongue in cheek and at times too YA in the sense of the teen angst being somewhat overbearing for me but overall the story was good. The relationship with Brea and Griff (the initial male hearththrob), is sickly sweet. When I say sickly sweet I really mean it. At times, this book did feel as if the author was channleling what they imagines a fae YA book to be and my god was it heavy on the teen element.
I enjoyed the light relief this story has as well as the anecdotes and nods to many other fantasy series such as Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings.
It shows quite a few similarities to many of the other well known fantasy stories. One that came to mind in particular was the Shadow & Bone Trilogy (YA) by Leigh Bardugo, ACOTAR and many others however, Bardugo's books are far better written IMO.
I did tune out a few times whilst working but it whiled away a few hours.
I love a great I-didn't-know-I-was-special story. Brea has just come out of a mental institution because she sees things and because she somehow hurt her mother. After her best friend intercedes during a bullying incident, Brea loses it and then blacks out. She's arrested for killing her best friend.
But then, in the dark of night, someone comes to take her somewhere, his voice oddly influential. Turns out, she's half-Fae and she's taken back to Faerie.
She's not sure whom to trust, and it seems that everyone has an agenda.
I liked the twists and turns, even if I saw a few of them coming. Brea is a likable character, and I liked both Fae brothers, Griffin and Lochlan. This book is good for fans of the Chosen One, love triangles, searching for identity, fish-out-of-water, and teen royalty stories.
Such a good book! Really enjoyed meeting all the characters and seeing how their personalities developed. Had lots of funny banter. Great storyline as well I thoroughly enjoyed it and can’t wait to read the rest of the series!
Brea is kind of annoying but I think that's how she was supposed to be. I am very intrigued by her story as well as the fae realm she has found herself from. I am already downloading book two as we speak.
For an audio book it wasn’t bad. The end was good it actually makes me want to listen to the next one. 3.34/5 the main character got on my nerves a LOT thou
