Jess and Wildcat go separate ways after hunting down the Whittaker gang. He begins his hunt for the slippery killer, Buck Benson. He locates him in the town of Starkey, Texas, but he’s going by the name of Harry Black. He’s now married and has a young son. The people of the town have even elected him as the mayor and, by all accounts, he is a very generous man. Jess finds himself in a quandary regarding this man who has no memory of his past life.
Jess decides to hunt his next man, Rick Gale, but he receives an urgent message from the schoolmarm, Martha Heller. He drops everything and heads straight to Harrison, Texas. The marshal of the town ends up wounded badly and Jess pins on his United States Marshals badge to enforce the law there. Jess is in love with Martha, but knows that he can’t act on his feelings until he hangs up his guns and retires.
Librarian's note: There is more than one author in the Goodreads database with this name.
In 1990 Robert J. Thomas was sworn in as the full time mayor for the city of Westland, Michigan. He served twelve years, making him the longest serving mayor in Westland's history.
While he was mayor he wrote his first book titled, How to Run for Local Office, which has now sold over 25,000 copies worldwide.
He has written and published on Kindle, the Jess Williams Westerns series. Retired, he now lives in Mississippi with his wfe Jill.
One of the better efforts by Thomas featuring Jess Williams. Martha Heller is a school teacher from a previous novel. She sends a telegram to Jess asking for his help with some unruly ranch hands. Jess was smitten by her charms in the earlier book and that continues in this one. Add Jess' usual bounty hunting work and you wind up with a normal Williams thriller. Does involve a twist concerning one of the people he's been hunting.
While Jess is busy hunting outlaws, Martha, school teacher who Jess fell in love with, sends Jess a telegraph t help her town. The Marshall is wounded, one of her student injured, and she was abused and assulted. Jess comes to The rescue and also tells Martha of his feelings for her.
I enjoyed this book because it shows the human side of Jess Williams. I glad the author brought back the school teacher for this book. I hope you will bring her back every so often.
I have read all of Robert's books as well as Louis La Mour and the whole Smoke Jenson's series. I know that it's hard to replace the original you do well but it does miss a certain flair.
