I love cake donuts, and I own a donut pan, so my eyes lit up when I saw this cookbook. It has a lot of great recipes for both cake and yeasted donuts.

My particular favorites are the cinnamon coffee cake donuts, chocolate cake donuts, and German chocolate donuts. There are also Vegan and Gluten Free donut recipes. In the Savory Section, there’s a clever idea for garlic bread pull-apart donuts. If you have a donut pan, this book will give you lots of clever ways to use it.

All donut lovers will adore this book. I received a free copy of this book from Callisto Media via Netgalley. My review is voluntary.

This is a good cookbook that lives up to its name of offering easy baked donut recipes. In some cases, you'll sacrifice some quality because of the ease, like the "beignet" recipe is just crescent roll dough you press back together, bake in squares and coat with powdered sugar. There are a variety of flavors built around a basic recipe. A couple of gluten free options are offered (regular and chocolate), using a purchased cup-for-cup gluten free flour mix. These are literally the exact same recipes as the regular cake and chocolate cake recipe, though, other than calling for gluten free flour. One vegan regular and one vegan chocolate recipe are provided as well. Some recipes call for shortcuts like using cake mix or biscuit dough. An intro explains how to use donut appliances, ingredients, etc. and a small section of savory donuts is provided at the end.

In general, the recipes are designed to be made in either a mini donut maker, a donut hole maker, or in the oven in a donut pan or on a baking sheet for filled donuts. Most of them have instructions to use several appliances or methods, other than the filled donuts. The filled donuts sound tasty but require quite a few hours to make and there is no gluten free recipe for those so I'm unable to try it. Some of them sound more like cupcakes than donuts and are actually frosted. These are some extremely high sugar, high calorie donuts for the most part, even though baking cuts down some of the fat and calories. Ironically, the only recipe in the whole book that calls for whole wheat flour or low/no sugar is for your dog.

There are very few pictures and there is no nutritional information. Note that the photos appear to be from stock photo companies and are not necessarily of these recipes.

There were some tasty sounding flavor combinations, and I made a note to try a couple of them. I have my own mix-and-match gluten free (and dairy free) mini donut recipe that we've been making for years (http://magicalchildhood.com/life/2017...) that I plan to continue using. My younger son makes them himself and I like that it uses a cup of fruit or veggies (pumpkin puree, applesauce, mashed banana, squash, etc.) for moistness, flavor and a bit of nutrition. We alternate the spices and flavors to match the mix-and-match ingredients and change them up. Since I cook from scratch and cook gluten free, I plan to just continue to use that recipe. Standard American cooks will probably really appreciate the recipes in this book, especially for occasional decadent treats.

I read a temporary digital ARC of this book for review.

Mmm... Donuts.

What a delectable book! Not only are there recipes for yummy sweet donuts, but also for savory donuts, donut holes, donut pops, donut trifles, beignets and more!

I think I gained a few pound by skimming through the pages. And I'm not even upset about it.

The key word that appeals to me (after the word DONUT of course) is EASY. These recipes include practical, everyday ingredients that aren't hard to find, pronounce, or reuse.

I can't wait to try these.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher.

Who doesn't love donuts?

I appreciated the way that this book made making donuts seem like the easiest thing in the world. I'm not sure why I thought it was such a difficult process -- probably the extensive contraption they use to make them at Krispy Kreme.

However, I docked a star because the two recipes we've tried were pretty tasteless.

And another star docked for the fact that the beignet recipe was literally just crescent roll dough with powdered sugar on it.

The Easy Baked Donut Cookbook: 60 Sweet and Savory Recipes for Your Oven and Mini Donut Maker by Sara Mellas
We have enjoyed baked donuts in the past and know we can make them healthy as they are not deep fried. Can't wait to find other food combination from this book that will work for us.
Good size for my kitchen, 8" x 9" Starts with colorful pictures and table of contents where recipes are broken up into basic, glazed, ice and frosted, filled and donut holes, and savory.
Intro starts with a summary, info on prep, measurement tips, how to combine ingredients, essential equipment and ingredients and so many more tips before you start.
Tasty tips and troubleshooting is included along with recipe label and recipe tips explained with icon images.
Each category of recipes starts with an index of whats included along with an arrow showing what of the recipes has an accompanying color photo.
Each recipe has a title, prep, bake time, inactive time and a summary of the item.
recipe labels are included, servings, mini or donut hole amounts.
Tells you which appliances you will need.
List of ingredients is included and what I LOVE about the measurements is that they are listed in US and UK. Some recipes have a LOT of ingredients, make sure you have them all before starting.
You should be able to substitute for your healthier dietary needs: low sodium, low fat, low sugar and fresh vs. canned items.
Directions are given and i LOVE that it tells you depending on which appliance you are using, how to bake it. I do not have a donut baker so I'll be using the oven.
It also tells you how to frost them and serve.
The only things missing are nutritional information and pictures of each recipe.
Can't wait to try the apple cider donuts and pumpkin, banana or blueberry (without glaze).
At the back of the book are sections for resources, recipes by occasion and index.
Acknowledgements are included along with about the author.
A KEEPER for me because I know how to make them edible for our healthier dietary needs.
Would be 5 star if each recipe has a photo and nutritional information included.
I received this review copy from The Callisto Publisher's Club and this is my honest opinion.

This is a good cookbook if you want to make easy donuts. It basically uses a couple of stock recipes and then just adjusts them for different flavors, sometimes with processed ingredients like crescent roll dough or cake mix. It has gluten free recipes but those are basically just the same recipe but it lists gluten free flour mix instead of flour. Very few photos and I think they're stock photos. No nutritional information. Lots of flavors. It's a good book but one I'd probably get from the library instead of buying.

Many thanks to Callisto Media and NetGalley for an electronic advance copy, all opinions are my own

I have a problem. Maybe an addiction. Definitely a distraction. Right now, I can think of a dozen things I’d rather be doing right now. And they are all doughnuts. I love doughnuts. When I am around them, I have to channel all my self-control, because I just want to eat them all (well, maybe not the ones with coconut on top, but all the rest). More than any other sweet, they are my weakness.

But I do worry about the frying. I am a big fan of fried foods, but they’re not generally touted for the healthiness. That is why I was so excited to see this, The Easy Baked Donut Cookbook. Even right there in the title, two of my favorite words: easy and donut. How could I resist?

The recipes in The Easy Baked Donut Cookbook look simple enough for even beginning bakers and absolutely delicious. And while you don’t need a lot of fancy ingredients to get started, you do need to invest in some doughnut pans, in order to get the right look for your baked goods. Not all the recipes require the special pans, but many do. But once you have your doughnut pans (or mini-doughnut, or doughnut holes, or all of them), then you can bake to your heart’s content.

Author Sara Mellas starts with simple cake doughnuts that only need sugar on top, such as Old-Fashioned Cake Donuts, Chocolate Cake Donuts, Apple Cider Donuts, Banana Bread Donuts, or Snickerdoodle Donuts. There are even gluten-free and vegan options in this chapter. Then she ups the stakes a little to move on to glazed donuts. This chapter includes recipes such as Lemon Poppyseed Donuts, Red Velvet Cake Donuts, Irish Coffee Donuts, and Classic Raised Donuts. But still there is more.

The next chapter moves us into the Iced and Frosted categories, so there are Cookies and Cream Donuts, Peanut Butter Cup Donuts, German Chocolate Cake Donuts, Carrot Cake Donuts, and S’Mores Donuts. But that’s enough, because then we move on to those delectable filled donuts, like a Sugared Jelly Donut, Boston Cream Donuts, Apple Pie Donuts, and Cannoli Donuts.

And just in case you’re tired of traditional donuts (as if!), the final chapter offers even imaginative options like Birthday Cake Donut Holes, Easy Apple “Fritters,” Quick and Easy Beignets, and Donut Bread Pudding with Vanilla Custard Sauce. Clearly this is a chef after my donut-shaped heart.

I loved the idea of baked donuts as a morning treat (okay, all-day treat), and these recipes make my mouth water. I can’t wait to get some of those doughnut pans and start baking!

A copy of The Easy Baked Donut Cookbook was provided by Rockridge Press through the Callisto Media Publisher’s Club, with many thanks.

The Easy Baked Donut Cookbook: 60 Sweet and Savory Recipes for Your Oven and Mini Donut Maker by Sara Mellas is newly published cookbook. Who doesn’t love a good donut? From sugared or sprinkled to frosted or filled, donuts are sure to satisfy your sweet tooth and sweeten your day. The best part is you don’t need to fuss with frying to whip up these fun, flavorful treats at home. Theses donuts can be made in an oven or donut maker, providing plenty of tried-and-true tricks and tasty recipes for beautifully baked donuts, donut holes, mini donuts, and more. From sweet staples, such as Old-Fashioned Cake Donuts to creative savory bakes like Jalapeno-Cheddar Cornbread Donuts, this donut cookbook serves you dozens of delightfully simple recipes to match every craving, along with perfectly paired frostings, glazes, and toppings.

The Easy Baked Donut Cookbook is a cookbook for every donut lover, particularly those of use that do not want to fry. Spending the last twelve weeks or so home with my family I have made all of my tried and true recipes, ran out of flour and yeast, and resupplied while looking for new things to try. This book was well timed, and inspired me to make some donuts. I am lucky enough to have a donut pan, and plenty of other pans, and was happy to find some new things for my weekend baking. I thought the introduction, including the basic techniques and supply lists were nicely done, and as a fellow New Englander the explanation behind writing the book resonated with me. I thought the recipes were easy to follow, well labeled, and detailed. I like the variants and options were also included, because I love to fiddle with recipes and find these suggestions helpful both in deciding if my idea will work and if the author already came up with something even better. There are several recipes that really caught my eye, some I was ready to try right away and others needed a shopping trip to complete so had to wait a bit. I was impressed that there were gluten free, vegan, and boozy recipes. The classics went over the best in my house, like the chocolate cake and pumpkin donuts- but the glazed blueberry and several filled donuts were also well received.

The Easy Baked Donut Cookbook is a great resource for bakers that want to try their hand at donuts, without frying anything. Frequent bakers might want to add this to their cookbook collection, dabbles might want to borrow it from the library for the first look through to decide if they will use it often enough- I have a feeling I will be needed a paper copy.

Yum. Sixty mouth-watering recipes for donuts that you can do at home. Most of the recipes are from scratch, but a few use things like boxed cake mix or canned biscuit dough. That there are also a few gluten free and vegan options is also a plus. I will note that the GF ones are exactly the same as the regular ones with the exception of using GF flour instead of regular flour so I’m sure some of the others can be adapted in this same way as long as you use a 1-to-1 GF flour mix. The introduction includes information on essential ingredients, techniques, and more. Each recipe includes the list of ingredients, time needed, options for full-sized donuts, mini-donuts, or donut holes where appropriate, as well as how many of each the recipe makes. There are even “adult” recipes that contain alcohol. There are also some tips and variations with the recipes. What there isn’t is nutritional information or pictures (except for a very few at the beginning of some sections). The recipes contain a mix of cake, yeast-raised, and filled, sweet and savory. And there’s even a final “doggie donut” recipe for your favorite canine (also the only one that is relatively “healthy” with whole wheat flour and no sugar).

What I liked: the recipes look amazing and I am definitely going to be trying some of them. I liked that the recipes are clear and easy to read and follow and don’t require special equipment beyond a donut pan (which I already have). Loved the wide variety from “Cider Donuts” to “Gluten Free Old Fashioned” to “Jalapeño-Cheddar Cornbread Donuts).

What I didn’t like: no nutritional information and “stock” photos instead of some real pictures of some of the recipes.

Recommendation: If you’re looking for something different to make in your oven, definitely pick this up. The recipes look amazing and will satisfy any sweet tooth. Yes, the lack of nutritional information is an issue for me, but beyond that, this is a good cookbook to have on your shelf.

Disclaimer: I received this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own and are not influenced by anyone or anything.

Originally published on my blog: Nonstop Reader.

The Easy Baked Donut Cookbook is a well curated collection of baked donut recipes by Sara Mellas. Due out 2nd June 2020 from Callisto on their Rockridge Press imprint, it's 245 pages and available in paperback and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats lately.

The recipes are arranged thematically, an introduction with general directions is followed by chapters for basic and sugared, glazed, iced and frosted, filled, donut holes, and savory donuts. Each of the recipes includes an introductory description, ingredients listed in a bullet point sidebar (US measurements given, with *some* of the metric equivalents in parentheses), and step by step instructions. There is no nutritional info provided. Variations and alternatives (gluten free, vegan, etc) are provided in very limited numbers. The gluten-free recipes are the same as the non-gluten free versions except with substituted gluten-free flour.

My main quibble with the book is that the recipes are mostly not photographed. There are some photos, and they're clear and attractive, but they only represent about 5% of the recipes included in the book. It is, however, a very well written book full of tasty treats prepared in a novel way.

Four stars.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

Baked Donut Nirvana

If you love donuts, this is a super fun book about how to make donuts at home without deep frying. To successfully pull off the recipes, you need donut and/or donut hole pans, Some recipes are rolled out and hand cut, not requiring a special pan.

The author starts the book with a well-done introductory section that not only shares details about equipment and ingredients needed but also is full of tips that will help your donut-baking success. The recipes are divided into simple, logical sections like Glazed and Filled. She even has two interesting chapters at the end, one for donut holes and donut-like (like fritters and beignets) or donut-using desserts and another for savory donuts. There aren't many of the latter, but I think it's a fun addition. The recipes themselves are detailed and clear, which I think will help any attempt at making the recipes more successful. She's got some standard donut recipes, like a couple of varieties of old fashions (including a gluten-free version) and iced and sprinkled donuts. Some recipes are inspired by the seasons or holidays like gingerbread, pumpkin, and eggnog donuts. Others are a nod to other desserts or pastries, like Boston cream, red velvet cake, and German chocolate cake donuts. Some have unique ingredients like one with matcha tea. Others just seemed inspired and fun, like Firecracker Donut Hole Pops and Churros con Chocolate Donut Holes. If you enjoy donuts and want to play around with a slightly healthier version at home, this book is your ticket to baked donut nirvana.

I received a free copy of this book from #NetGalley, but that did not affect my review.

For National Donut/Doughnut Day I used this cookbook to make my family donuts. I tried the first two recipes in the book at this time but I'll come back to this book later, I'm certain. There are several things I love about this cookbook.

First, I love that it is focused on baking and not frying donuts because that is my preferred way to make them at home. The recipes clearly state using icons if you need to use a baking pan and the oven or if you can use an electronic donut maker -- I have both options at my house but it was going to get to near 90°F at my home when I tested this so I used the maker.

Second, there is a wide variety of donuts including holiday variations. True, some of the recipes are really more make this type then add these extra ingredients which can be annoying in terms of flipping the book back and forth, but why take the extra space when you can keep each recipe to just two pages long.

Third, I love the icons that mark the type of pans and utensils you'll need, if it has alcohol or not, and even cute icons for mini vs regular sized donuts. This makes it quick and easy to see what I could make with ingredients and tools that I had on hand.

However, I do wish there were more photos but that's my common complaint about Rockridge Press cookbooks, isn't it? I also really wish that sour cream was not used in nearly every single recipe. I had to double check on substitutions when several should be listed in the cookbook itself. We bake donuts to save on fat and calories but sour cream is like 91% fat calories.

I was sent a free copy of this cookbook in the hopes that I would review it; no other form of compensation was received.

“The Easy Baked Donut Cookbook: 60 Sweet and Savory Recipes for Your Oven and Mini Donut Maker” by Sara Mellas is a good beginner cookbook for those who want to make baked donuts – I hesitate to call them healthier, because after all they still are donuts, but at least they’re not fried, so they’re slightly less-bad for you.

Ms. Mellas does a good job introducing the reader to the basics, covering equipment, ingredients, measuring, shortcuts, etc. before she gets to the recipes. And there are plenty of recipes, covering a wide range of tastes, fillings, and toppings. In addition to the basics, you also get vegan donuts, gluten-free donuts, holiday themed donuts, interesting dessert donuts, savory donuts, and even a doggy donut recipe – quite a variety to try out. And most can be made as mini-donuts or donut holes as well.

A couple of quibbles – although there’s a lot of recipes, for the most part there are only two basic donut recipes (cake and raised) with slight variations and/or different toppings. And some of the recipes/shortcuts are a bit too easy – beignets are simply crescent roll dough with powdered sugar.
But for the beginner baker, or for someone who loves homemade donuts but doesn’t want their kitchen smelling like a deep fat fryer for weeks, this book can definitely point you in the right direction.

I requested and received a free advanced electronic copy from Callisto Media / Rockridge Press via NetGalley. Thank you!

Thanks so much for a copy to read and give my honest opinion. Oven baked donuts....anyone? Beautiful cover! 60 different kinds of donuts for your donut maker or straight from the oven.

What did I like? Honestly the cover drew my attention and my grandson is a huge donut eater so I asked for a review copy. So positives for the book is that you can really see pretty much every donut you’d want, with easy recipes. There is also some easy ideas on prepping and vegan donut ideas as well. Only negative I found is pretty much every recipe uses canola oil, I’m not a big fan but donuts are used in moderation.

Would I recommend or buy? So this cookbook is based on an idea and not really style of cooking like Italian so this is need based. It’s risky since the internet holds vast recipes of donuts versus having your own book. I’d have to have actually made donuts in the past, which I was pretty sure I used biscuit mix versus the whole mixed ingredients in a bowl. Desserts are not a huge part of my life and I seldom make them. Only one or two are vegan, gluten free so this is an up to you on need basis.

Thoughts for the author? Interesting idea, I wasn’t even aware they made donut makers. I’d definitely give the gluten free a try. Thanks so much for a copy.

Okay, I wouldn't usually pick up a sweets oriented cookbook, but donuts are my kryptonite. The word donut paired with easy and baked in this title immediately caught my attention. Sara Mellas sets you up for success in her first chapter, providing numerous tips for making sure your donuts turn out just right. The cookbook includes recipes for your classic favorites such as old-fashioned cake, apple cider, classic raised, and Boston cream. It also includes some fascinating sounding newer versions such as cannoli, Matcha green tea, and panettone. While the chapter headings Basic and Sugared, Glazed, Iced and Frosted, and Filled are to be expected, finding recipes labeled gluten-free and vegan may not be. The final chapter titled Savory takes donuts to a whole new level including recipes such as jalapeno-cheddar cornbread donuts and olive, fig, and rosemary donuts. There's even a doggy donut recipe to make sure no family member is left out. I am grateful to have received a copy of this cookbook from RockRidge Press in exchange for my honest opinion. I was under no obligation to provide a positve review, and received no monetary compensation.

The only thing I wish I knew before I got this book is that it's much easier if you have a donut maker. The good news is I found one at Goodwill for $4! I've tried three recipes so far, two sweet and one savory. They all have turned out great, with nothing but positive feedback from family and friends I've shared with. There are some recipes that use pre-made ingredients such as cake mix or pizza dough, and others that you whip up from scratch. I've tried both kinds and prefer the non-cake mix donuts.

The book is laid out in a way that's easy to access. The introduction is straightforward. There are six chapters of recipes and they're divided by what type of donuts they are. There are even gluten free options. The recipes are easy to follow and include tips for tweaking the recipe or making it easier.

I'd never made donuts before getting this book because I was intimidated. Her recipes and tips make it super easy and fun. I highly recommend this cook book! I received my copy from the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

Donuts, donuts, donuts! Who does not like donuts. From basic and sugared, glazed, iced and frosted to filled donuts. This cookbook has 60 great recipes, some easy and some for the more experienced baker! There are even savory donuts, who knew!
The author teaches the reader the basics of prep, dry and wet ingredients. How to measure and what equipment to use.
There are a couple of pages that tell you about essential ingredients such as baking soda and baking powder, butter and oil, chocolate, cocoa powder, dairy, eggs, flour, sugar etc.
Now for the recipes, there are labels such as adults only, donut maker, homemade head start, make it mini and one bowl. Then there are recipe tips: variation tip, ingredient tip, technique tip, allergen tip and troubleshooting tip.
So with all that information, you can't go wrong with this donut cookbook. I am not experienced on making donuts so I will start out with the basics and go from there. But if you are a bit more experienced, get this cookbook for your shelves, well open of course so you can make some delicious donuts.

Yum! Yum! Yum! be prepared to read a delightful cookbook filled with lots of wonderful recipes and lovely photos to match. If you love doughnuts, like I do, opting for baking doughnuts is a bit less caloric. Baked doughnuts are a bit easier to make too as you don't have to stand over a hot fryer frying doughnuts while dodging hot grease. You won't be disappointed by The Easy Baked Donut Cookbook by Sara Mellas as her cookbook contains recipes for both quick and yeast baked doughnuts. Her cookbook includes a good selection of frostings, glazes or icings along with doughnut fillings.

Recommend.

Super fun cookbook! I am loving the idea of taking a beloved fried dessert and turning into a slightly healthier version by baking it.

Of course it's still a donut but hey I will take the small victories when I can find them.

There 60 well organized recipes but sadly the majority of the book does not include pictures. That isn'ta deal breaker but I do prefer pictures when choosing recipes.

However, this book is very written and presented. I also love the links in the Kindle version you can easily move to any recipe in the book with just one click.

I received an advance publishers copy of this book for an honest opinion.

The Easy Baked Donut Cookbook was a fun and inspirational (to bake) read. Clearly two toddlers love donuts, as much as their parents, and I’ve been able to use this book as a method to bring the kids into the kitchen. They clearly want those donuts and have some skin in the game when I ask them to come in to finish up the small measuring (baking soda, salt, vanilla) for the next mornings breakfast. The recipes themselves are delicious and I was able to test many as I’d cook four flavors at once and hand out as gifts over the holidays last year.

This is a short and sweet cookbook jam packed with recipes! There are so many varieties of donuts - sweet and savory to glazed and frosted. Each recipe can be made in a donut pan, but if possible, it is indicated that the recipe can be made as mini donuts, donut holes, or in a donut maker. There is definitely a range of difficulty - some are quick and easy while others involve many, many ingredients. The Easy Baked Donut Cookbook is definitely fun - I just wish there were more photos!

I suck at baking. Like REALLY suck cause apparently I can’t follow directions. Somehow, my donut came out amazing!! This book is great for non bakers like me. It breaks down ingredients into simple English verbatim. Thank you author and photographer for beautiful pics. I love the side notes and what items to purchase too. I’m going share this book with my other non baking friends.

Fantastic cookbook!

I borrowed this on Kindle Unlimited then bought a physical copy for my kitchen. Whenever I watch cooking or baking shows where home cooks are learning to do better in the kitchen, I always says the most important thing is to teach a person about the kitchen, equipment, measuring, chopping, etc. The first chapter of this is that. It lays out the importance of planning, using your kitchen space wisely and measuring properly to get the best results. Seems obvious, but it never hurts to be reminded and it has some really helpful tips.

Beyond that, these recipes are YUM! I got hooked on these glazed, baked cake donuts that a local convenience store sold then they stopped making them so I bought donut pans online. There were no recipes or instructions in what I bought, just 2 6 slot donut pans. With this book, I now know what to do with those pans. The glazed recipe isn't exactly what I wanted, but the pumpkin and snickerdoodle are SO GOOD! Most importantly, these recipes are easy to follow and make. As I get more comfortable making these recipes, I'll start experimenting to make my own creations with confidence because this book really gives you a solid foundation to build on. I absolutely love the author's style and wish they had many more cookbooks for me to add to my collection.
