Fate brings them together. Their magic will bind them.
In the city of Verdholm, canals separate the highborns in the center sections of the city from the lowborns along the outer sections. The city is isolated, surrounded by a deadly swamp and steam fields which should protect the people of the city from the dangerous outside world. Until it doesn’t.
For Sam, an orphaned thief who wants only to protect her brother, protection means stealing enough so she can one day buy her way into a better section. She’s a skilled thief and offered a job that changes everything for her, leading her to understand her city—and herself—in ways she never imagined.
Alec is an apothecary who longed to join the prestigious university and become a physicker, but they rarely accept students from the merchant class, and he’s now too old to enroll. The surprising discovery of strange magic changes his fortunes.
Their journey will decide the fate of their city, but only if they can master the magic they only have when together.
The Book of Maladies is a fantasy adventure series perfect for fans of Brandon Sanderson, Jeff Wheeler, and Robert Jordan.
This set contains the first three volumes in the Book of Maladies: Wasting Broken Poisoned Tormina Comatose Amnesia Exsanguinated
The first book seems to have a very slow start for me and I can't seem to get interested in the plot. There are so many unanswered questions: What is so magical about the paper, what is causing the princess to be on her deathbed, why would Sam be the scapegoat, who or what are the Thelns and why would one destroy Alec's apothecary?
Sam loses her staff in a canal and reflects that it was one of the few ties she had to her mother. Chapter 18 - "It (the water) swirled where she'd been and where she thought the staff remained." Yet the next day it seems to be in her possession. Chapter 19 - "She leaned against her staff though she tried to conceal it."
Sam is a thief. She knows how to evaluate her chances of success. I can appreciate that she wants to get her brother out of prison but she seems ridiculously intent on achieving this aim no matter how unlikely she is to succeed.
I have a strong feeling that this storyline will pick up its pace but I just don't feel like slogging along until it does when I have other books I might enjoy more. Only a one star rating at this point since I haven't even finished the first book.
This series was fine - there wasn't anything technically wrong with it... I just didn't love anything about it. It constantly like I was reading filler for another book series. Everything felt like the liner-notes for another story... the characters all had little to no legit motivation, all of the interesting parts of the story were 'secrets' that we were intended to find out along with the characters but even with that I was disappointed with everyone involved. I don't know how this improves with the next installment... the author's dug themselves a pretty deep hole. I don't know how to get me caring about what happens next.
Overall this is a great series. I just really hate the main character’s attitude and lack of growth. “Lowborn” this, “lowborn” that. It’s exhausting. How can she be really good at so many other things, but still haven’t grown out of that attitude. I like the Alec character. The university parts of the book with him are very interesting. I’m hoping the “I suck because I am lowborn” stuff will evolve soon. Overall I love the series
This series has plenty of action and intrigue. Sam discovers that she has abilities after she is healed by Alec (with the use of special paper). She and Alec are trying to find answers to many questions. Their adventure is captivating. I am looking forward to the next book- Tormina.
Mysteries within mysteries, lies compounded with more lies. Fast-paced adventure with enough revelations to always keep you guessing. Who's telling the truth? Are the other characters friend or foe, or something in between? Will the main character ever recover her missing memories? It's enough to keep your head spinning, and also to keep you reading.
Thus was clean, fun and full of adventure. World and character development were top notch. It dragged a bit towards the end. This would be perfect for middle schoolers looking for magical fun. Looking forward to the next books.
Anyone who enjoys good characters, lots of secrets, action and suspense will enjoy this series of stories. Keep the pages turning! Thanks for a good time.
