Where the Truth Lives

Rate this book
The follow-up to Where the Blame Lies—Where the Truth Lives is a gripping, page-turning, romantic thriller that will leave you gasping for breath. When the director of a local mental health hospital is found murdered and mutilated, Homicide Detective Reed Davies is first on scene. What was done to the body is gruesome. Inexplicable. But Reed is dealt another curveball when he finds that the doctor who discovered the victim is someone Reed is intimately familiar with—a woman with whom he shared one passionate night weeks before. Dr. Elizabeth Nolan is somehow tangled up in the crime, and even while Reed must now question her possible involvement, he can’t help being drawn to the beautiful, enigmatic woman. As more bodies appear and the devious killer terrorizes Cincinnati, a shocking connection begins to emerge, one that not only involves Dr. Nolan, but Reed himself. A connection more twisted and elaborate than he can imagine. Now Reed must hunt the monster down, a killer who will stop at nothing to see his diabolical plan to its final, deadly conclusion.

#1 Where the Blame Lies — 5 Stars
#2 Where the Truth Lives — 4.5 Stars

Not everyone is brave and unafraid but I do believe that we should get a scare exercise every once in a while. And what better way to do it than by having your favorite serial killers spooked you into next week? This book is as good of a place to start as any.

This author, she gets me, for this book is a masterpiece. One that’s filled with gore and bloody mayhem, makes the hair on your body stood on end, and gets your criminal mind juices flowing. Bloody hell, I’m still reeling from all the twist and turns.

Following a series of heinous killings, this book will have you biting your nails anxiously and on the edge of your seat. It grips you from the very first page with an intense gut wrenching prologue and keeps you guessing until all the puzzle pieces fit into place.

It’s brutal, twisted, and has your stomach churning with its crime heavy plot. The romance is nothing short of a background noise. But it’s there and it’s beautiful and heartfelt. The H is a pure sweetheart and the h is strong and unrelenting.

This book is simply brilliant. It plays out in your head like a movie. I felt and ached for the characters. Most shockingly, I fell in love with one of the villains . That’s how complex and well developed the characterizations are.

If you want a suspenseful story that has layers of intrigue and nightmarish visions but still carries warmth and hope, look no further! This can be read as a standalone, but it’s better if you also read the previous book. Trust me, it’s more fulfilling that way.

Overall Opinion: This was a good suspenseful romance that builds off of the previous book, Where the Blame Lies. I didn’t realize that the characters and storyline would be so intertwined with the previous book, but I thought it was a great way to give some closure to that one while having the mcs in this one get their HEA. It was more on the suspense side vs romance which often bothers me in this sub-genre, but I didn’t feel all that bothered by it because the mystery and suspenseful elements were done well. I enjoyed it but I don’t really see myself re-reading it in the future as I do with some of Ms. Sheridan’s earlier works.

Brief Summary of the Storyline: This is Liza and Reed’s story. Liza approaches Reed for a ONS one night and even though Reed is not one to partake in a ONS, he cannot deny the strong attraction he feels towards her. Days later, they meet again when Liza discovers a murdered body at the mental hospital she works in and Reed is the head detective. They spend more time together due to the case and struggle to not give in to the attraction they still feel. There are some suspenseful scenes, some big baggage they both have to work through, and some sexy times...and they get a HEA ending.

Point Of View (POV): This alternated between focusing mainly on Liza and Reed in 3rd person narrative.

Overall Pace of Story: Good. I never skimmed and I thought it flowed well.

Instalove: No

H (Hero) rating: 4.5 stars. Reed. I really liked him. He was a sweetheart and super protective and patient with the h.

h (heroine) rating: 4 stars. Liza. I liked her. I appreciated her strength and desire to help others.

Sadness level: Low, no tissues needed

Push/Pull: Yes

Heat level: Good. They have some good tension, chemistry, and scenes -- but not so much it takes away from the story.

Descriptive sex: Yes

OW (Other Woman)/OM (Other Man) drama: No

Sex scene with OW or OM: No

Cheating: No

Separation: No

Possible Triggers: Yes

Closure: This had pretty good closure with what I would call a HEA ending I still would’ve liked more though 😏

Safety: This one should be Safe for most safety gang readers

I really loved Where the Blame Lies, so I was really excited to read another romantic suspense from Mia Sheridan. This one follows the guy who is actually the son of the heroine from book one. Now, he is a homicide detective and following the cases of murders that appear to be of a serial killer. The first murder leads him to Elizabeth, who had discovered the body of the victim. When they see each other, they are brought back to the one night stand they had a few weeks ago where Elizabeth left him and never reached out again. The two grow closer as Reed is trying to solve this case. There were just a lot of characters in here and it was hard for me to really keep track of who was who and who wanted to kill who. When the big reveal happened, it took a bit for me to really place what had actually happened. The romance was just okay as well. I had a hard time connecting with either character, which was sad because I loved the characters in book one and loved their romance. This one also seemed to drag a bit more, which added to my disconnect to the characters. While it wasn't a bad romantic suspense, I expected a bit more.

“All people moved between darkness and light into those gray areas between the two, the only difference between any of them being the degree in which they walked in shadow and how far they traveled into murkier depths. Sometimes an evil man acted as a hero, and sometimes a victim became a tormenter. Criminals exhibited unexpected grace, and honest men had moments of great weakness."

"From darkness had come light, a luminous ray of strength and virtue that shone brightly on the dim corners of the world."

Characters
Reed (28, Police Detective):
The following words/phrases were used to describe Reed: gorgeous, sweet, intuitive, thoughtful, noble, good guy, savior, loyal, sensitive, kind, decent

Three things about Reed:
- Constantly trying not to live in the shadow of his birth father (rapist and serial killer) “But in his heart, a specific desire burned brighter. The need to prove he belonged. That he wasn’t just a terrible accident not meant to happen.”
- “He read things, this man. This detective. Saw things other people did not.”
- There is a need in him to "counterbalance the sins of his father.”

Some quotes about Reed:
“I want my life to mean something.” He looked her straight in the eye. “I want what you went through to . . .” He let out a frustrated breath. “I want it to be for something.”

“Every day, he’d strive to honor the people who’d loved him so deeply.”

“He saw things, looked beneath the surface of people in a way few others did.”

“He took nothing for granted and saw life as the undeserved and magnificent gift it was. Heaven showed up in small, stolen moments. And he had learned to recognize them for what they were. To pause, to hold them close and breathe them in as they filtered slowly, slowly through his soul. And for those tender slips of precious time, the broken world was only perfect.”

Liza (late 20's, Psychologist):
The following words/phrases were used to describe Liza: survivor, empty, restless, caged, a watcher, strong, courageous, hurting, fearful, suffering, wants to be free, good listener

Three things about Liza:
- Survived a horrific childhood “God, the memories were ugly. Brutal and graphic. What she’d lived through was so incredibly unspeakable.”
- Liza didn't realize just how strong and amazing she was. "She saw her weaknesses, and she still felt the pain of things that were not her fault. But he doubted she celebrated her courage, her mere survival.”
"You think that story you just told is your weakness and your shame, but maybe it’s your greatest strength.”

- Liza: “I know what it’s like to feel pain so deep, you shut out reality, and create one of your own.”

Some quotes about Liza:
“home was not her solace anyway. It was her work that had always saved her. Her work that allowed her to lose herself when she needed to.”

“That’s always the hard part though, isn’t it? Knowing how to face your demons and then following through.”

“Don’t deny your past, Liza. It’s not your shame to carry. Grieve it, and then use it to strengthen others.”

“She had no idea how strong she truly was. How unbelievably loving. She’d walked out of hell with love still in her heart. How miraculous was that?”

My Thoughts:
The following are my thoughts about this book:
- Page 2, and already my heart was hammering.... “Liza shook with fear too, but a faraway resignation crept closer, like a thief in the night, there to steal any unlikely notion that this could end well. It wouldn’t. The most she could do now was survive it . . .”
- I love Mia’s writing. Descriptive enough to suck you in, but not overly descriptive that you get lost in details
- After the prologue, I was completely blown away by Liza’s strength. Dang! 🤯🤯
- I learned a new word I’m not sure I ever wanted to know. 😳👀 “And he’s been enucleated,” Lewis said.
Enucleated. The surgical removal of an eye. Or in this case, both eyes.”
👀😳
- There was some intrigue. It wasn't clear who the guilty party was, so it did keep my interest and I had some very wrong guesses along the way.
- Lakeside Hospital, with no lake and Valley Hospital with no valley....😂 “They’re messing with people. It’s not right. I say we do an exposé on this. Blow the story wide open.”
- I think this is the first book I've ever read where someone had a good experience in foster care. That was a nice change of pace. 👍
- I liked the growth in Liza. Reed helped her see herself and her reactions to her circumstances differently and I loved how she started to become more confident in her story and her self reflection became positive
- I adored Reed. Totally swoon-worthy and definitely added to my book boyfriend list. ❤️🥰❣️
- ”You have to do that work, Liza. You already are. All I’m saying is that if you need to climb stairs in the dark, then you do that. And if you’ll let me, I’ll be waiting for you on the other side, and I’ll be cheering you on.”
- OMG.....why oh why was I so conflicted about a certain someone from book 1?? I was a little torn up about his circumstances. It’s the mark of a good author who can take a despised character (a monster) and make you feel something other than loathing and hate for them. I was completely torn about his ending and was really hoping there would be a different conclusion. However, in the end I know what happened was probably for the best. But still, I was conflicted. 🤔🤫🤭💔
- OMG !!😲 There is No Way I would have made it through that tunnel. 🐍🐀 🕷🕸😬 Liza was amazingly strong. Loved her!
- The twists and turns at the end were great. It was hard to imagine how all the various players would somehow merge into one conclusive plot, but it came together flawlessly in the end. 👏👏

Overall:
I love Mia Sheridan and Where the Blame Lies was one of my favorites last year, so it was a no-brainer for me to reach for this book.

A "tortured" H/h is my kryptonite and this book had it in spades. I love a main character that is battling their internal demons at the start of the book but then conquers some of those demons by the end. The growth Liza had during the story was incredible. I thought she was strong in the prologue (Holy 💩!!), but she continued to blow me away throughout the story. Her decisions and choices to begin to see herself in a different light (thanks to Reed’s encouragement and support) was inspiring.
And speaking of Reed, did I mention how much I loved him?? ❤️. Hmmm, 🤔I did? Well, it deserves another mention because OMG...Reed 🥰❤️❤️

This doesn’t have much in the way of a steam factor, but it felt appropriate for the story seeing as there was a serial killer on the lose. I felt like building the foundation of their relationship and Liza getting over some of her hurdles was more important than the bedroom scenes anyway. So, if you are hoping for lots of hot and heavy bedroom scenes, you will be disappointed.

Overall, I was engaged start to finish and I loved the story. It was so good to spend some time with Josie and Zach again and to see how well Reed has blended between his loving, adoptive family and his biological family. Heart warming for sure!

Except for the prologue, this book wasn’t as nail biting and graphic as the first book because the killings were not individuals who were friends/family of the main characters. Therefore, the reader is not as invested when someone is injured or suffers. However, I was still very much captivated the whole way through the story and it was interesting to see how the author tied the events to the lives of the main characters. I would highly recommend.

Quotes
“A blackness filled her. A loneliness so deep and bottomless that she both feared and hoped she’d drown in it. Suffocate. Disappear beneath its fathomless depths.”

“But the building’s full of nuts. How are they going to rule anyone out?” Ransom asked.
The cop shrugged. “I guess they’re looking for any out-of-place nuts.”

“Somewhere in there, Reed, in the midst of all those twisted pathways and shadowy corners is . . . where the truth lives.”

“Who can help someone better than a person who’s walked in their shoes? Who’s more trustworthy to a person in pain? Someone who’s never felt it, or someone who’s been there, and crossed the bridge to the other side?”

“I’d like to believe monsters don’t get the final say.”

“The thing about monsters in the dark, Reed, is that if you can’t escape them, you have to let them in. They force you to.”

“You can fight with her, but you can’t fight for her.”

“Love heals, Liza. Those aren’t just words. And I think acting in love doesn’t just heal others. It heals yourself.”

“He didn’t just hurt us, he thought he’d create another version of himself. He thought he had the perfect recipe.”
“Well,” Charles sighed. “His recipe was a little off because you’re a few cinnamon sticks short of an apple pie, my friend. You do realize that, right?”

Reed Davies is a homicide detective for the Cincinnati police department. His current case is trying to catch a psychopath that always seems to be one step ahead. The serial killer’s latest victim is discovered at a local mental hospital where he unexpectedly crosses paths with a gorgeous woman he spent an unforgettable night with a couple weeks ago. There was something vulnerable and captivating about her that drew him in, and he hadn’t been able to stop thinking about her.

Liza Nolan had a traumatic childhood that still haunted her. Her past had forever changed her, and she was still trying to cope with the memories that often still shook her to her core. She suddenly finds herself caught up in a murder investigation when she stumbles upon a dead body at work. To complicate things even more, she comes face to face with the beautiful, kind stranger she recently spent a passionate evening with. With a killer on the loose terrorizing the city, everything is uncertain and scary. Reed seems to be the only person who makes her feel safe. As their connection grows she begins to see how strong she is, and realizes that maybe it’s not too late for love.

Where the Truth Lives is the amazing follow-up to Where the Blame Lies. It is a romantic thriller.

This book has both a male and female pov as the main narrators. The male POV is Detective Reed Davies. The female POV is psychologist Liza (both 3rd person POVs). The story takes place in Cincinnati.

My main question when starting this book was how does it connect to Where the Blame Lies and would we see Josie and Zach? And when does this book take place (i.e., how many years after Where The Blame Lies)?

As with the first book this one starts with a chilling prologue. The book is connected to Where the Blame Lies and that book really must be read first to get the full story. We do see Josie and Zach. And the main part of the story (not the prologue or first chapter) takes place when Reed is 28 years old. In case anyone can't remember who Reed is .

I also really wanted to know if a certain character from the first book would be in this book at all. I won't spoil that, but I will say that he is at least mentioned.

This book was extremely creepy. Between a killer on the loose and the things that person was doing, and the connections to both Reed and Liza ... this was a thrilling read. There was a lot happening. And there were truly some really shocking developments.

Similar to Where the Blame Lies this is truly half thriller and half romance. The suspense/mystery was strong. And the romance was amazing. Liza had such a difficult childhood. And this added so much to the story. And I loved seeing Reed thinking about his bio parents and his upbringing.

I loved this book. My only small complaint would be towards the end. There was a part that dragged on a bit for me. But after that the book got exciting again.

Overall, this was a strong follow-up book. It had an interesting mystery and there were a few unbelievably brilliant twists. The book was riveting.

This was a romantic suspense with a higher focus on the suspense than the romance. Normally I’m not too crazy about the romance taking a backseat in the story, but this time, I was wishing it was packed in a trunk and completely eliminated. I found it to be an annoying intrusion of an otherwise very engaging suspense/thriller story. If the romance had been as gritty and the thriller it would have worked great, but it was yet another case of a heroine dealing with a traumatic past and feeling broken. The hero, of course, is patient and tells her how strong she is….blah blah blah… so much of their dialogue was like a therapy session. She eventually has her Rocky Balboa moment and realizes she’s not broken. Same ole sappy cliché hurt/comfort.

Sometimes an evil man acted as a hero, and sometimes a victim became a tormenter. Criminals exhibited unexpected grace, and honest men had moments of great weakness. There was a strange, terrible, beautiful, complicated universe inside them all where nothing was simply black or white.

Reread #2 Update:
I LOVE THIS BOOK SO MUCH Y’ALL DON’T UNDERSTAND. GO READ IT IF YOU LIKE SUSPENSE/ROMANCE.

Original Review:

⇢The Plot
This book was on a whole new level than the last one. The case and the murders were far more complex, and multiple crimes were solved in the end.

⇢The Ending
Let’s start with the ending because I’m still reeling. It was honestly perfect how both this book and the open strings from the last one were tied up in a perfect bow. All of my unanswered questions from book one were answered in a way that made sense and felt… peaceful, almost.

⇢The Plot pt.2
The whole plot was fantastic. The romance wasn’t as focused upon as with Josie and Zach, but I didn’t mind because what was lacking in that genre was made up for in the thriller aspect. The cases were a lot more gruesome, and the best part was that because this time the main character was the detective not the civilian, we got a lot more scenes actually depicting the deaths and the cases being solved, which was one of my commentaries for the last book.

⇢Reed
Let’s talk about Reed, because despite the fact that I think Lizas character was actually more developed, he was the main character and is the tie between the two novels. I was so excited to meet him. When I read that it was Josie’s son who would be taking on the case this time around, I knew that her own past would somehow tie in and I was not let down. Once again, I wish we knew more about him outside of his job (I had the same comment for Zach in book 1). Even though it made sense because he was, in his own words, married to his work, I wish we got to see a little more of how his childhood influenced him.

“Whoever this woman is, whatever her fight and whatever she faces it with, you’ll have to let her come to you. She’ll need that, and you will too, Reed. You can fight with her, but you can’t fight for her.”

⇢Liza
As for Liza, I loved her character just as much if not more than Josie. Her experiences were obviously different, but she was just as brave and as strong. I wish we got more scenes of her at work and with her patients because they were so well written and you could really see how much she empathized with them. That was the downside to the increase in police scenes; there were a lot less scenes with Liza in the present.

It was the journey of a warrior. It was the passage of a woman whose heart was so filled with love that it billowed over and suffocated all those other voices, the ones who’d told her she was weak and without power. The ones who’d deemed her unlovable. Soiled. Ruined. She was not ruined. She was not.

⇢Characters
Finally, this book had a much better side character cast! Of course we saw Josie, Zach and Arryn (and her brothers), and I loved that the scene of when they were first introduced to Reed was included. There were also a lot more people involved in the Tribulation murders that we actually spent time with, which made for a very interesting cast :) And of course, Charles played a role…

You don't have to know about Where the Blame Lies to enjoy this book. BUT - since our hero this time is connected to people from the first book, I would really suggest you read the first book first!

Reed is 28 years old and a homocide detective in Cincinnati.

He's just been called to murder at a psych hospital.

And the doc who found the dead guy?? Reed's one-night stand from a couple of weeks ago. Liza. The girl he still hasn't gotten out of his head.

Liza. We heard some very scary and dangerous things about her younger years in the prologue.
And now she's a psychologist at that clinic. And she found her boss dead on the floor.

And then he shows up. The guy she can't stop thinking about.

Together they have to find out who is killing people and what both Reed and Liza have to do with the whole thing?!?!

WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO LIZA & REED?
WILL THERE BE A HEA?
READ THE BOOK TO FIND OUT ☺

What can I say?

It's a Mia Sheridan book. I LOVED reading it!

And even though it's not one of her typical sweet and cry-your-heart-out romances, it's still amazing and beautiful and dark and exciting and heartbreaking and mysterious and romantic and sexy and sweet and a bit funny even.

I adored Reed and Liza!

And Reed's partner and his family!

And the crime parts! We're guessing all through the story who the bad guy is, and WHY the eff he is doing what he's doing... And what Reed and Liza have to do with any of it! It's all very exciting and suspensy and scary and mysterious and this reallly needs to go on Netflix ASAP!!!

Great book. Nothing more I can say without spoiling the story!
READ IT!

WHERE THE TRUTH LIVES was such an exciting and scary and beautiful romantic mystery thriller! I adored Liza & Reed! Run to your nearest amazon asap - they'll be sold out in no time! ☺

A tiny little problem I had while reading. Just like with the first book. ☺ Don't worry, it's not bad and not about the story ...

I have NEVER ever in all my romance and thriller reading years or in my personal life heard the word/job CRIMINALIST. Never! It's a crime scene investigator person. So weird. I googled it even - they exist, but why have I never heard of them? Why does television hide them from us? Or is this something locally to Cincinneti or Sweden or something?? Sooo very weird. ☺ And then Mia goes and uses that word 241 times in these two books! LOL!!!

I’m truly not surprised at the talent that Mia Sheridan possesses. She truly can write any kind of genre that’s out there, and do it far beyond well. Since reading Where The Blame Lies I’ve been wanting more of this type of genre. Mia gave it to us, picking this story up several years later from where the previous book left off. Gruesome murders, suspense, a love story, wounds healed, fears faced, and souls mended—Mia gives us everything and more! This isn’t for the faint at heart. Very gruesome details, but truly some of Mia’s best work.

Where the Truth Lives is a great follow-up to Where the Blame Lies. I was already impressed by Mia Sheridan's ability to write a romantic suspense, so I was pretty excited when she announced that she was writing another book in this subgenre. This book takes place in the future and focuses on Homicide Detective Reed Davies and Dr. Elizabeth Nolan, but you'll get to see what the previous main characters are up to. The story was very intriguing and kept me guessing until the end. I think unpredictability is very important in this subgenre, and I think the author did an incredible job in that aspect. The suspense was also done really well, and I enjoyed seeing the detectives try to solve the case. It definitely wasn't easy and I enjoyed not knowing what was going on, and trying to figure out how everything was connected. There were also a couple of unexpected twists that were incorporated perfectly into the story.

The chemistry between Reed and Elizabeth was strong and I thought they made a great couple. I loved that the main characters were wrestling with their own demons, and that the author really took the time for them to overcome those. There was no rushing and everything felt organic, which made me enjoy the development of the romance between Reed and Elizabeth more. Reed was just such an incredible guy and so supportive of Elizabeth. I completely fell in love with him. Where the Truth Lives is a very suspenseful romance novel. There were even moments where I couldn't contain my tears, and that really shows how connected I was to the story and characters. I loved everything about this book, however I would've wanted for the main characters to spend more time together. Mia Sheridan is so talented and I really hope she will continue to write more books in this subgenre.

What a beautiful, gutting, twisty-turning, unpredictable love story! The mystery will keep you suspended on the edge, flipping pages, and biting your nails. Oh, it plays out so brilliantly, with the perfect amount of heart-in-throat tension. A tender romance threads through the pitch dark story--dark in the way a thriller should be. The tragedy, the bittersweet justice... This book will stay with you. I highly recommend.

3.5 Great conclusion to the duo logy! This book focuses on Reed, Josie’s son from the first book who is now a detective. The crime was a wonderful feet of literary architecture, super thought out and complex. Full circle moments felt earned and well written. I didn’t enjoy it as much as the first book due to some lagging in the middle and I really was mostly invested in Josie’s and Reeds relationship which we got to see a little but not much. And selfishly I really just wanted him to call her mom bc I love Josie so much and I just wanted that one thing for her after everything she gave up. Still a very very well written series, will definitely read more from this author.

This. Was. So. Good.

Gahhhh! Good gravy. I don’t even consider myself a fan of romantic suspense. I don’t seek it out. I don’t gravitate toward it.

I do, however, seek out and gravitate towards books written by Mia Sheridan, and this chilling, multi-layered, utterly unputdownable masterpiece is the exact reason why. Whether she’s toying with my heartstrings, delivering breath-stealing emotional punches, or sending my brain (and my pulse) into overdrive as it tries to put together the puzzle pieces of mystery – Ms. Sheridan is unparalleled at her craft. That is: she does it all, and she does it all magnificently.

I loved how this played out as the follow-up to Where the Blame Lies. I loved how the story tied into and really offered closure to Zach and Josie’s story, while allowing Reed and Liza’s story to stand solidly on its own. Connected, but separate. Familiar but completely fresh and new. I loved how thoroughly it messed with my head while somehow also bolstering my heart. I loved how there are no caricature villains here – Ms. Sheridan gave all characters this amazing amount of depth and complexity.

As with Where the Blame Lies, the romance is not entirely center stage. It's still emotional and sex and rewarding - but it takes a sort of backseat to the thriller/mystery components. Still, I adored Reed (my gosh, but that's an understatement) and the sexy sweet relationship he built with Liza. There's also greater love story going on in here: that of family bonds, and the heart's limitless capacity to love. It's not always pretty. It's sometimes delivered with a sense of conflicting emotions. But it was perfection. I just loved it all so much!

From the intricately crafted plot to the deeply nuanced characters Where the Truth Lives was simply brilliant and I absolutely recommend taking this wild ride! ~ Shelly, 5 Stars

4 Estrellas!!

“Somewhere in there, Reed, in the midst of all those twisted pathways and shadowy corners is…where the truth lives.”

This author definitely surprised me. The bilogy "Where" is without a doubt one of the best suspense, crime, romantic novels that I have read, and although my favorite book is still the first, this one was also very good, a very addictive story, and full of mystery, action, secrets, but also, love, faith, kindness and with some incredible characters, imperfect but that precisely made them more human. I loved it, I recommend these books a lot, and although this one can be read as standalone, I think that it is important to read the first book in order to know the whole story more deeply.

I wanted to DNF this book a couple of times..well the start of the story was good and engaging but along the way, I just wasn't in it... so many serial killers and the last 10% of the book so many things happen that I just didn't care about..

If there is one thing, I love more than a swoon worthy romance it is a swoon worthy romance with a bit of murder mystery. Toss in a hot detective or cop and I am 100% in. Seriously though, who doesn't love a protective guy in a place of power?? Maybe it is just me.

Where the Blame Lies was one of my favorite books of 2019 so you can believe when I saw that Mia Sheridan was coming out with a book two in the Where series I knew I had to read it. Where the Truth Lives is a perfect continuation of WTBL. You get to see more of your favorite characters and most importantly you get to meet some new faces.

As with my review on Where the Blame Lies I don't want to give away any spoilers or go too much into detail because it will take away from the story and you deserve to enjoy this reading experience as much as I did.

Liza is a psychologist set on helping her patients overcome their trauma and mental illnesses because if there is one thing, she knows it is trauma. Liza's story is heartbreaking and tragic, you will cry your eyes out. Liza has a one-night stand with a stranger but after several weeks she can't seem to get him off her mind when one day she walks into work and finds the body of her boss, eyes missing. Soon the detectives arrive, and she can't believe her eyes when one of the detectives is none other than the man from several weeks ago.

Reed is the son of a serial killer; the byproduct of rape and he is determined to not be anything like his father. When he turns 18, he goes to meet Josie, his biological Mom and things seems to start falling into place for Reed. Now nearly a decade later Reed is a detective for the Cincinnati Police Department. One day he gets a call about a murder, when he shows up, he sees the woman he hasn't been able to get off his mind for the last few weeks. As the murders increase and the plot thickens Reed is determined to figure out not only how Liza is involved but how he can get her to open up to be the woman he knows she is.

As the story starts to build, more people become targets and an old murderer comes to town Reed is left wondering how he can figure this out and keep the woman and family he loves safe. I stayed up until the wee hours of the morning finishing this story. Around every corner there is a new plot twist, a new story developing and a new heart pounding discovery. I was on the edge of my seat to finish the story and I finished it the same way I started it, in tears. The conclusion was every bit as beautiful as I could have hoped for.

This was really quite good. I loved how it tied in with the first book...this one being Reed/Logan’s story (Josie’s Baby). This was a very intricately plotted story...I’m surprised by how much I liked this duology. One that fed both my need for a suspenseful police procedural and my need for a little romance, especially one that doesn’t have me rolling my eyes because of the cheesiness.

With an emphasis on the mystery surrounding a serial killer and not so much on the romance, I found this a perfect mix of both. The narrators weren’t great but they were good and didn’t lessen my enjoyment of the book overall. Mia Sheridan is becoming a go-to romantic suspense author for me and I wouldn’t mind more books by her in this sub-genre.

**4.5 Stars**

In a brilliant and spectacular follow-up to WHERE THE BLAME LIES, Mia Sheridan continues with another equally outstanding case of murder and mayhem in a searing story surrounding abused and damaged people, but mostly about their resilience, strength and survival beginning with a gut-wrenching Prologue. With ties to the first book in the WHERE duet, fans will be happy to see the return of Josie and Zach.

A romantic thriller with a fiery start and a nightmarish storyline, WHERE THE TRUTH LIES is set once again in Cincinnati and filled to the brim with creepy vibes and dark and heartbreaking angst. Flashbacks lock readers into the page-turner that starts strong and never slows down. For this reader, it is always a positive addition when points of view come from both the male and female versions as here – from our hero, Detective Reed Davies and our heroine, Dr. Elizabeth Nolan.

With interconnecting plotlines, the believable and likable characters are compelling and their story is thrilling. Sheridan does an expert job in building well-developed characters with that added bit of depth that makes them memorable. A relationship surprisingly develops from an instant attraction that leads to a one-night stand followed by an early morning escape. Sizzle and emotionally charged passion is pre-ordained when the detective and doctor come face-to-face again in a surprise and shocking encounter.

It always helps to add a little humor and witty banter to help balance out the dark grittiness of a psychological thriller. There’s a strong and entertaining cast of secondary characters that help out in that area.

The multi-dimensional storylines remind me of well-cut puzzle pieces. With each additional clue, another piece of the jigsaw snaps into place. A cleverly drawn chiller that includes lots of twists and turns, readers are kept guessing right up to the explosive conclusion.

One small nagging hangover left me perplexed regarding a couple of interesting characters introduced early on. I thought both would play a deeper role in the progression of this story. Instead, they fizzled and disappeared without explanation which was a small frustration when it came to a full and complete closure.

Too many details spoil the story for others, so I’m going to stop by saying that readers will find a perfect balance of romance, chills and kills and thrills, along with an amazing hero who’ll own your heart and leave you breathless. Mia Sheridan has once again delivered an incredible and unputdownable book. Readers are certain to be left completely content and satisfied.

A Great Follow up to 'Where the Blame Lies'

Wow is all I can say. Just Wow. I really loved this book about broken people and survivors. Not for the faint of heart though. There is child abuse, sexual abuse, torture, and abuse of all kinds mentioned in this book. Some very very terrible so if you have triggers, stay away from this book. But at the heart of the story, there's a beautiful love story with a perfect hero and a heroine who is a survivor. What she goes through in her life is horrible but she rises above it. She faces her fears head on and comes out so much stronger. I loved this book in spite of the evil in it. This is the story of Josie's son Reed who she gave birth to while kidnapped. He is such a good man. He is now a detective and a serial killer is on the loose. Actually two or three are out there in this intriguing tale. One is his Father. There are no words to describe how great this story is. I just loved all the shades of grey that littered this journey. You become attached to the people in this novel. I didn't want it to end. And there are so many twists and turns it was amazing. Just when you thought you knew who was the evil in this story, it turns another way. I hope this is not the end. I want Arryn to get her own novel. Hint hint. Get Writing Mia!!!

5 Caleb Stars!!!!

I’m going to admit right now had Jenny Jo not pressured me into reading this book I would NOT have done it. I am waaaaaaaaaay too much of a chicken and this book is absolutely out of my comfort zone.

I will also admit I am VERY GLAD I read it.

This book is a heavy read with complicated emotions and many twists and turns. Some of it I knew what the reason was but some of it caught me completely off guard. And even with all the seriousness of a thriller there were a couple laugh out loud moments, at what should have been the most inopportune times.

Reed is everything you want him to be and more.

Again, this is not my normal book but it is absolutely worth it. It will be considered an all-time favorite, for sure!!!!

I'm completely blown away by this captivating, gut-wrenching and thought-provoking story. What a nerve-wracking and emotional rollercoaster this was! Mia Sheridan's poignant and gripping writing touched the deepest recesses of my heart and soul and I'm left here spellbound and in awe of this author's incredible and unsurpassed talent. Where the Truth Lives is a romantic thriller and the follow-up to Mia's Where the Blame Lies which was one of my top favorite reads of 2019.

This unputdownable story will grab your attention from the first page, consume your every waking thought and evoke a kaleidoscope of raw, deep feelings inside of you. There are many shocking, jaw-dropping and mind-boggling twists and turns I never saw coming and that knocked me on the floor. The plot is masterfully and meticulously crafted, fast-paced and the characters are very complex, multi-layered and intriguing individuals.

I won't give away any spoilers about this story because it would be a shame to take away from your reading experience. For those of you who have read Where the Blame Lies the name Reed Davies will immediately ring a bell. In this book he is all grown up and a Homicide detective for Cincinnati Police. When the director of Lakeside hospital, a local mental health facility, is found murdered and mutilated Reed and his partner Ransom are called in to investigate the crime. Imagine his surprise when he finds out that the doctor who found the victim is the gorgeous stranger he had a one-night stand with, a woman who he hasn't been able to forget for weeks. Dr. Elizabeth Nolan is a psychologist with passion who went trough a very traumatic childhood that left physical and emotional scars behind. Liza is beautiful, intelligent and secretive. Reed can't but feel drawn to her. When the crazy killer continues leaving more dead bodies behind in order to fulfill his diabolic plan Reed will discover that there is a shocking and twisted connection between them that not only involves him but also Dr. Nolan.

Reed is such a wonderful and admirable guy in so many ways. He always wanted his life to meen something in order to honor the people who had loved him so deeply. He became a cop in order to protect and serve. Reed is gentle, caring and very understanding. He saw the same strength and resilience in Liza like he did in his mother and that's one of the reasons he fell for her so easily.

Liza is committed to helping her patients who have experienced trauma because she can relate. Her story is heartbreaking and will make you cry. I adored Reed for helping her realise that she is a born fighter and that despite what happend to her she was still capable of love and compassion. A good-hearted and courageous woman like Liza deserved a HEA with an honorable guy like Reed.

I've stayed up until wee hours in order to finish reading this story because the suspense kept me on my toes. The ending left me with tears in my eyes and such a peace and gratitude in my heart. I'm so thankful for the important lesson this book and Mia Sheridan have taught me: sometimes cruel monsters can do a heroic and selfless act and sometimes victims can become tormentors and predators. People are not only evil or good. The world is not only black or white but many shades of gray in between - and this is where the truth lives. I'm giving this outstanding story 6 stars!

HOLY HELL! I think my heart skipped a beat!!! Mia Sheridan outdone herself with this one. Honestly, there really isn’t anything she can’t write!!! BIG BOOK HANGOVER NOW!!
Okay, romantic suspense isn’t a genre I normally read because I am a total chicken shit when it comes to the idea of murder, death, and all the gory details. But let me just say, where the Truth Lives blew my mind and I was totally captivated. It’s a perfect mixture of mystery and romance that I found myself unable to put down.

Reed is a homicide detective who was called to investigate a gruesome murder of the director of a local mental hospital. When Reed showed up, he came face to face with Dr. Elizabeth Nolan, a psychologist who first found the director on the floor. Reed quickly realized he already knew Dr. Elizabeth Nolan … rather intimately just a few days prior, except at the time Reed did not know who the beautiful stranger was. Who harmed the director? What are the roles Reed + Dr. Nolan have in all these murders? As more victims appeared, the more convoluted the investigation becomes. Was there a connection between these victims?

As this story is a thriller, there isn’t much I can say without spoiling the whole experience for you. Good luck trying to guess who is involved and who is not. I found myself on the edge of my seat the whole time and I was literally suspicious of any new characters that showed up I tried to guess where the story was going, but oh I was SO WRONG
The two main characters are deeply complex. Liza has been through hell and back but don’t feel sorry for her. She is the strongest and most resilience heroine I have ever read. Reed is such a patience, caring, protective hero. He, too has a past that shaped who he became today – such an incredible guy.

The chemistry between Reed and Liza are undeniable and begin with the hot tryst they had after a chance meeting at the bar. Everything after that was a slow dance and it was completely realistic. Reed wants more than Liza can give but he will not settle for anything less even if it kills him in the process. Reed knows Liza needs time, healing, and a whole lot of self-discovery and forgiving. Of course, our hero was understanding and supportive through it all. I absolutely adore Reed!
WTTL is romantic suspense at its FINEST! Not for the faint of the heart though (I’ll be honest I had to skip a couple of things in order to sleep at night). The storyline is thought-provoking, complicated, twisted, and way more elaborated than I anticipated. Let’s not forget the writing - nothing short of SURPERB! This book can be read as standalone but I recommend Where the Blames lies first. Both stories are equally thrilling, ones that I will not forget any time soon.
I really suffered this time - Cubicle-biting, stomach knotting, heart stopping experience all the way until the end. Simply BRILLIANT MIA!

There is something so incredibly special about Where the Truth Lives. It is more than crime fiction, more than a romance. I was completely engrossed in those elements of the story. They both entertained me and tugged on my heartstrings. But it is this unique gift that Mia Sheridan has that took this story into the truly extraordinary category. Sheridan makes you look at the hard parts of the world through a different lens. When I read this book I felt both challenged and encouraged. Where The Truth Lives is a story of redemption in all forms. Beautiful, broken, and hauntingly romantic. And it will stay with me for a long time to come.
