Lords of London #1

Atormentando a un Duque

Rate this book

Such a fun little novella this was. I think more from Tamara Gill is in order when I am looking for not particularly historically accurate but an enjoyable bite-sized read.

Highlights...
- I loved the plot (heroine pursues the hero)
- I also really loved the role reversal (hero being the simpering, moral virgin)
- Enjoyed their chemistry
- Romance could have been more solid with their past friendship being explored, but I have few expectations from a novella.

*Bottom line, I had a gala time reading it, and that's what matters.

'Since her cheating husband created a scandal by dying beneath his whore, Darcy de Merle is determined to enjoy widowhood, and refuses to mourn a man she grew to loathe. Setting the ton ablaze, Darcy holds a ball to re-launch herself into Society on the anniversary of his death.

Cameron, the Duke of Athelby plays by the rules. Always. He’s lived through the terrible consequences of what revelry, carelessness, and lack of respect for one’s social position can have on a family. So, when he sees Darcy de Merle skirting the boundaries of respectability, it is only right that he should remind her of the proper etiquette that she should adhere to.

Darcy refuses to allow another man to tell her what to do. When the Duke of Athelby chastises her at every turn, reminding her of her social failures, well, there is only one thing to be done about it…seduce the duke and show him there is more to life than the proper conventions set by the ton.

A battle of wills ensues where all bets are off, numerous rules are broken and love becomes the ultimate reward.'

To Bedevil a Duke is the first book in Tamara Gill's Lords of London series.

Darcy was portrayed as quite sandalous and reckless at the beginning of the book, with a tendency to overindulge in drink. But that seemed to be quite the misdirect, as this characterization started to taper off the further into the book I read. I did really love that Darcy wasn't willing to compromise in her life anymore, she was going to live how she chose now that her husband is gone and she'll do what she must to go after what she wants.

Cameron on the other was quite unlikable for most of the book. He was just so judgemental and condescending. And the cause that made him like that just didn't justify it for me. He does improve as the book progresses, but my ability to like him had been corruped by all of his negativity and unkind observations of others. If he wants to be uptight, fine, but don't force your ideals on others. By the end of the book I did like his character, but I wish he had been more likable throughout or had a more legitimate reason for behaving how he did, then I would have been more invested.

They're antagonistic with one another form the start, but it stems from a long standing attraction between the two. An attraction which each is loathe to admit to. I did really enjoy the reversal of the traditional roles here, not something often found in a historical romance. She is the experienced one and he is the virgin. What a refreshing change of pace! This had to have been my favorite thing from this book.

To Bedevil a Duke hasn't been my favorite Tamara Gill read, but it is the first in the series and I still enjoyed it so I will be giving the rest of the series a read and look forward to reding more by her. Therefore if you enjoy Tamara Gill's books, I recommend this book.

London 1805.

Staid, stoic, judgmental Cameron (a Duke) avoided casual
liaisons like his late older brother. In reality, he was in-
experienced w/ women. He became reacquainted w/ child-
hood friend Darcy, widowed 1 yr (an unhappy marriage.)
He thought Darcy vexing, with a flagrant disregard for
rules. She sought a lover and elected not to wed again. He
felt justified in chastising Darcy and others.

The story had sexy goings on, but needed more story. The
H+ h seldom had real discussions (mostly argued), & never
went out, w/ the exception of running into ea. other @balls/
events & locating places to folic. What 'made them tick?'
This reader needed more answers.

To Bedevil a Duke was a quick read with a romance that ultimately wasn’t for me.

After her cheating husband passes away and her year of mourning has passed, Darcy de Merle is ready to begin enjoying life. To set the tone for how she wants to begin widowhood, Darcy throws a ball on the anniversary of her husband’s death. Cameron, the Duke of Athelby, is a man who believes in following the rules of society and is unable to stop himself from telling Darcy he believes she’s skirting ruin. But Darcy refuses to be ordered around by another man and decides to loosen the duke up by seducing him.

Cameron grew up seeing his older brother flaunt his title and using women at every turn before his early demise. His brother’s behavior led Cameron to be determined to never be like him. Instead Cameron is a rule follower and believes one should always follow proper etiquette. I had a hard time liking Cameron as while I understood why he followed the rules so closely, he came across as a boring and strict individual.

Darcy has just finished her year of mourning for the husband she couldn’t stand and is determined to finally have some fun in life. She plans to live life to the fullest and is determined to never be tied to a man again who is as restrictive as her late husband. I admired Darcy for taking control over her own life but there was little chance of repercussions as Darcy comes from a powerful family meaning society isn’t likely to shun her for her behavior.

Darcy and Cameron were friends as children but the pair drifted apart as they got older. Now Darcy finds Cameron to be quite stuffy and Cameron thinks Darcy skirts scandal at every turn. The story starts off with the two being very antagonistic towards each other with that lessening as time goes on. One issue I had with their romance was I never really understood why their feelings towards each other shifted. They hated each other one minute and didn’t the next and there was no explanation as to why. Also, I felt the characters didn’t have great chemistry which made the sexier scenes feel a bit lackluster.

All things considered To Bedevil a Duke wasn’t for me but I may continue on with the series at some point as some of the other books look like they will appeal to me more than this one.

To Bedevil A Duke by Tamara Gill was awesome! This book not only had a great storyline, but Tamara made her characters come alive! It was an amazing read and a little (or should I say a lot) steamy…. Just the way I like it! This book has trust, pride, loss, deception, scandal, adultery, hurt, different wants and needs, friendships, freedom, attraction, a virgin, needs love and so much more! I really loved this book and I highly recommend it! Travel back in time to 1805 London with Darcy deWolfe and Cameron, the Duke of Athelby.

***This book was gifted to me and I am voluntarily reviewing.

A different spin here! The gentleman was the inexperienced one, while the lady was previously married. The "de Wolfe" was the lady and true to her name and heritage: independent, courageous and fierce. A lovely little novella in the de Wolfe Pack Kindle World books!

Not bad, but not good either.
Cameron's prudeness became annoying really fast.. hence, one star less than I first intended 🤷🏻‍♀️

A short story about Darcy de Merle widow who decided she wants a lover and Cameron, the Duke of Athelby despised who doesn't want to end up like his brother (dead) and lives by the rules. Even if it means that he has never known a touch of a woman... Will Darcy be able to convince him to break his rules for her?

Short and upside down story. This time it's not a men trying to seduce a silly girl- this time it's a woman's job to get her men. She's in control, she knows what she wants and I absolutely love it. Strong and fierce that doesn't care about her reputation. She's there to make him hers.

Great story that will entertain throughout the evening. Highly recommend to all the romance lovers that are looking for something different out there.

Having romped and played together, Lady Darcy de Merle and Cameron, the Duke Of Athelby, had once had a very special relationship, one of shared fun, laughter and adventure. Time and disappointments have changed all that. Darcy has been through a disastrous marriage, where she was used and disabused of any romantic notions about marriage and she has sworn never to be under another man's control for as long as she lives. Cameron's predecessors have brought the family's name into disrepute, leaving him angry and determined to never allow the smudge of scandal to besmirch the Dukedom. As he once again corrects Darcy for what he considers her inappropriate behaviour, he almost goes too far in insulting her, engaging Darcy's fighting spirit and drawing her mischievous side into the open. When Cameron becomes the victim of a prank, it is Darcy that comes to his rescue and the feelings Cameron has harboured for her all the years come to the fore, but he is astounded when she turns him down. It takes very inappropriate behaviour to win her over. This novel is fairly short, but is well written and moves along at a good pace. It is also a standalone and comes to a delightful and romantic close. I thoroughly enjoyed this book that I received as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.

To Bedevil a Duke by Tamara Gill is book One in the Lords of London Series. This is the story of Cameron, the Duke of Athelby and Darcy de Merle.
Darcy had a awful marriage and when her husband died in a comprised position she set to not let him rule her life or any man again. So she sets out to live her life which isn't always in a proper way which leads Cameron to make comments to her about her being on the boundaries of respectability. Cameron knows the harshness of that life and works to stay above that harshness but there is something about Darcy that makes him want again.
Really enjoyed this book. It is one that you will want to see to the end in one read.
Loved it!

The main character of this novella is ridiculous. He doesn't just have a stick up his ass, he has the whole tree. And then the person who hates him the most falls in love with him, despite his forestry problems. This is a man who actually goes to the actual doctor because he might be feeling jealous and wants a pill for that. My eyes rolled out of my head and into traffic reading this mess.

I really liked the premise of this book. Execution, however, turned out to be extremely disappointing.

Let me assure you, given the length, I didn't expect much in terms of plot, but I would still like some well-written characters, with at least a level of depth. But Cameron and Darcy were very one-dimensional. The only things I learned about them were that Cameron lived by the society rules so as not to end up like his brother and Darcy didn't want to marry again because of her disastrous marriage.

I could maybe look over that due to this being the novella-length story but the truth is...this book was not well-written at all, language-wise. It read like draft of a draft:

"Darcy de Wolfe no matter how beautiful she may be, even now looking up at him with eyes that could bewitch the strongest man, she would not do. "

"I would hope because of our friendship you would indeed say no to an affair with the lady, and help prevent any trouble she could find herself in should she sleep with a man not her husband."

"Out of love for his grandmother and our friendship as children make me say these things, do not read into that concern any further, my lord."

"Well, you may not be attentive in the duke (...)"

"Would you, do you think your grace, be suitable as my lover?"

Grammar and punctuation aside, the whole sentence structure was just illogical and made the story difficult to read. Maybe it was an attempt at a more old-fashioned speech but to me it just felt unnatural and actually made me rephrase the sentences in my head as I read them. That's why it also took me almost 2 days to read a 100-page novella instead of 2 hours.

Add to it grammatical errors and typos (e.g. "won't" instead of "wont") and it really makes me wonder one thing...Who edited this??!

I was pretty interested in this series but at this point I'm not sure whether I will continue, solely based on the poor quality of writing. Though I might check the next one out to see if this was a one-time thing or a recurring pattern.

This is a short book, a couple of hours reading max, and the last 11% of the book is just adverts for the rest of the series.
I really liked the idea of this. The young widow, liberated from societies expectations, living life on her own terms meets the uptight upright Duke. He disapproves. She doesn't care. Sparks fly.
It is a simple plot, no grasping cousins trying to steal an inheritance, no far fetched kidnap twist. Just two people who take a bit of time to work out that they should be together.
Unfortunately it is not well written. The plot jumps forward in fits and starts, changing point of view every few pages. Characters appear to change not only their mind, but their whole world view several times in every conversation. The dialogue is meant to be witty, but is is cliched and a little crass. Sentences are overlong and some have to be read several times to get the sense of them.
This was a very disappointing read.

Another page turning, engrossing read which once again I was loathe to put down & read it in under a day The characters are very well portrayed, Cameron & Darcy were both strong characters & whilst they professed to not liking each other their attraction sizzled. This story is a lovely twist on the norm, it’s the woman who’s experienced & wanting to do as she wishes & the hero is the virgin waiting for marriage & to begin with he’s so strait laced. I love the author’s books & this doesn’t disappoint & I look forward to more in the series

My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

Awesome read

Okay first off I enjoyed it...it was sweet steamy fun and easy to glide through the pages....making it a quick read. There really was no dissapointment with the book at all I found the characters to be delightful and both equally stubborn. The cat and mouse chase was fun and when they both got what they wanted it was a smile to my face....the reason for only for stars is that I think that there could have been alittle more stuff happening outside of the two main characters....like for instance the Godmother could have put morepresence in the story or when the duke claims he's an ogre out could have depicted a scene that would help us see why he was playing the fool. Other than that I loved it. The Author knows how to engage you and keep you in the story without boring you. Just enough snickers tho make you smile and just enough pain to make you happy with the result. Oh only downfall totally was the epilogue I had to re-read the ending the Times to understand the children part.
Thanks for the free read Tamara Gill and thanks for the giveaway so was worth entering....cannot wait to read more!

Tamara Gill provides an interesting switch on the usual love story. In this case, Lady Darcy deWolfe is a widow who had a bad marriage. Now she wants to have fun without the ties of marriage. Her childhood friend, Cameron, the Duke of Athelby. The Duke is a straight-laced uptight guy - no drinking, no smoking, no gambling and definitely no sex. In the story twist, he is the virgin and wants to wait for marriage to the proper young woman.
What starts as a kiss escalates until Darcy finally seduces the Duke - now he wants to marry and she wants to become lovers.
This is a cute change of pace from the usual rakes and rogues and we still get a Happily Ever After in the end.
I received a free advanced copy of this book.

This was an enjoyable read. Lady Darcy de Wolfe and Cameron, Duke of Athelby are two very different but likeable characters. Darcy, after a disastrous first marriage, is determined to enjoy herself regardless of Society’s rules, where as Cameron is a stickler for rules and proprietary. Darcy is looking for a lover and Cameron is looking for a wife. They have known each other since childhood and are attracted to each other but they want different outcomes from a relationship. This is a different take on relationships with an experienced woman and an inexperienced man. An entertaining story with some heat. I received a copy and have voluntarily and honestly reviewed it.

It is a historical romance....................................with......
Hot, passionate, erotic romance as well as a wonderful love with a twist! I wanted to downgrade this novella... Why? Because it was way to short! It ended before I was ready and I wanted to keep reading and reading and reading. I normally will not buy novellas. I love long novels. However, I made an exception, and I am so very very happy that I did that! I can only say buy the novella and just enjoy as I did! You will enjoy the characters, the way it unfolds and most of all the creative writing from the talented author.

LOVE!!!! Wow...what a fabulous story! I could not put this down! A Lady de Wolfe is no less fierce and strong than her male relatives. And who wouldnt love to debauche a Duke like Cameron Athelby. This story was perfectly steamy in all the right ways, I absolutely loved it! I enjoyed this story not just for the steamy h/h but for the underlying current in the story of trying to stay true to yourself or who you are expected to be. Especially when you are of the upper echelon, there is an expected decorum which can be utterly cumbersome. A great read which flowed for a real page turner.

A very proper duke and a lady who was wronged and wants to be scandalous. What could go wrong? Normally it is the other way around but this book breaks the mold and Ms. Gill writes a great story of Cameron and Darcy’s venture into the unknown. Laughable moments and sweet moments and sexy moments peppered this story. Normally I am not a person who cares about an epilogue, but the one in this story is so sweet. I could have kept reading about this couple.

I received a complimentary copy from the author.
