I read some of the reviews for this book before reading it, and while I understand where they're coming from, I have to disagree with the three reviews posted here so far. Each one had a different reason why the book stunk, but I don't see it that way.
I think this was an excellent book, and while I completely understand why the other reviewers wrote what they did, I can't agree with their points of view. The main character has a moral code that doesn't allow him to just stand by while bad things he can prevent are happening to others. Especially if he can do something about it, even if that something might get him killed.
I might balk at this if the main character only acted like this when it was convenient for him, but all through the book, the main character never once hesitated to do what he thought was right, even when that something would land himself into a world of hurt. You have to admire courage like that. I'm not sure the main character should have meekly accepted is fate at the end of the book, I'd have been spitting and fighting for every scrap of recognition that was owed, while he just meekly accepted a completely wrong assessment, but honestly, that's the only gripe I had with the book. This was a very good story, and while it may have been a bit longwinded at times, I'm not sure any of it could have been cut out and still maintain the depth and breadth the story currently has. It might be considered slow in places, and as evidenced by the reviews I read before picking it up, some folks didn't like the main character's actions, but it certainly looked to me like the main character acted true to form in every encounter he had with others, perhaps with one interaction with the merchant, and thescene at the end as I pointed out before, but in all other cases, the main character acted exactly as his moral compass said he should, and I personally can find no fault with it.
If you're a fan of the cultivation LitRPG books, you will probably find this one a slow but enjoyable read. If you want more typical LitRPG scenes, then you might want to steer clear of this one, as it doesn't offer much in the way of standard LitRPG elements, (levels, skills, spells, advancement, and so on). There is obviously some of the skill advancement, and some of it is interesting, but progress is relatively slow, as is the story in places, but when it's done, I think most fans will agree it was well written, and while it may not flow as nicely as some other books in this genre, I find no fault with the way the author handled the story.
With a bit more flavor/robustness, this could easily have rated a 4 star in my book, but again, I'm not sure how that could have been accomplished, since the story stands well on it's own as is.
I liked it, and fully intend to read the next one when it comes out.
