Abandoned as a child and desperate to quit her miserable life as a scullery maid, Catherine Jones takes her fate in her own hands and heads West as a mail order bride. Though not at all sure that any man would want her, Catherine does know that any life would be better than the one she’s known. But when she arrives at her new home—a massive stone mansion and cold-eyed servants—she is filled with doubts. She envisioned a cozy farmhouse, full of love and warmth, and she fears she could never meet the expectations of such a wealthy husband. Meeting her intended, Jedediah Moore, does not do much to settle Catherine’s nerves. Not seen outside the house in years, the reclusive Mr. Moore also seems to want to have nothing to do with his soon-to-be bride. And as Catherine finds herself alone in her strange new world, she begins to wonder if she has made a terrible mistake. But sometimes, the secrets we hold in our heart must be shared for the heart to open again.
Catherine had such a heartbreaking story. She's a scullery maid living a horrible existence when she gets the idea to become a mail order bride.
Jedediah is apparently incredibly wealthy but also a recluse. Catherine is under the impression that he doesn't want anything to do with her, as she's barely even seen him. Until she decides she may as well go home, and he comes at the last minute to stop her. Sweet HEA.
I only wish this story was a little longer. I would have loved to read more about Catherine and Jedediah getting to know one another.
I didn’t realize this book was going to be so short until I really started reading it. The rubbish heap was really the dirty dishes since Catherine was a scullery maid. She applied as a mail order bride to get out from under being the low woman on the totem pole. But ending up as the mistress of the large mansion as a bride made her feel totally inadequate. However, her husband to be was having none of it. It was a shocker of an ending. Totally unbelievable and unrealistic. Oh well.
Catherine was a lowly scullery maid, which made her too low to be associated with other household hired help. She applied with an agency to be a mail order bride. When she arrived at the gentleman’s grand mansion, she realized she didn’t belong and soon ran away. You’ll have to read this little novella to discover the outcome. If the story had been longer and fleshed out, I would have given it 4 stars.
An unusual tale. The storyline of a mail-order bride (who washes dished in a rich man's home) and a rich man out west seems highly improbable; however, there is a HEA ending.
I gave four stars because I felt there should be more transition from one point in the story to another. The changes seemed abrupt but well-written.
This book was just to short. Great story but I was just getting into it an d it ended . You are a very good author and I have read several of your books. I was just disappointed in this one not being longer and more writing about the two of them and her new life of luxury. Thanks so much for sharing your talent. Respectively Joyce Lichtwald
This was so sweet. I really enjoyed this book and thought the bride who is very sweet and all I wanted to do was hug her and say you are good enough. If you like mail order bride books than you love this one it was really good!
Catherine is a scullery maid. She decides the only to improve her existence is to sign up to be a Mail-Order Bride. Will she find the happiness that she looking for? A great short story!
I enjoyed the story, just wished it was a little longer. More background on both characters...especially Mr. Moore there was some in Catherine but a little more story would have been nice.
