All it took was one frat party for me to notice her. Blair Jensen. Gorgeous nerd with a sharp tongue and give-no-shits attitude. The moment she sneered jock at me, I was captivated.
J.L. Beck is the USA Today Best Selling author of unapologetic romance. She lives in WI with her husband, two kids, and four dogs. She enjoys writing and recently starting a literary agency to help represent authors in the industry.
Of course a book called THE NERD has a woman on it with her hair up and wearing glasses. No hate to the model, straight-up hate to the authors and the book.
This was beyond problematic, it was scary. I can't believe people actually rated this book over a one star. It's 25 pages, but you will be scared and angry for each and every page. (Check out my highlights if you don't believe me.)
Spoilers, I guess. Most of this is in the blurb for The Jock, the full-length novel:
We have a stereotypical jock surrounded by other jocks and stereotypical frat guys who promote r*pe culture and treat women like commodities and conquests and call them bitch for fun-sies 🙃 The FMC went to a party and saw this gorgeous guy 🤯. Upon introduction, he apparently knew, and told her, she must be a virgin because she's so nerdy, that she could definitely use a fuck to make her less uptight- and what do you know, he's available.🙄 Taking offense- because who wouldn't- she pours a drink on him, thus everyone calling her an Ice Queen. This leads to bullying, taunts, bets being made...And the good ole boy jock can't take a hit to his manhood, he got quiet and said he could "have her if [he] wanted to" which is ominous af. I want the FMC to run far far away and the MMC to leave and get help.
So yeah. Fun! Not. Doesn't this just make you want to pick up the full-length novel? 😒
If you are looking for a quick read that sets the setting for the relationship between Blair and Cage then The Nerd is the story for you. This book is a prequel and can be read as a stand-alone. I haven't read any of the other North Wood University series but was still able to understand the story and I do have the rest on my devices to read. This book is your typical Nerd and Jock love story situation. We have our Nerd - Blair who is dragged by her friends to a college frat party and we have Cage - our frat boy and Jock. The pair have a stand-off moment at the party and insults each other, They go their separate ways and Cage still can't stop thinking about Blair - the girl who got away. A few days later, Cage is called to the Coaches' office as he needs to pick his grades up - typical Jock. Blair - the typical nerd ends up being his assigned tutor. Thus begins a forced interaction which Blair isn't happy about, but it looks like Cage is going to up the ante in wooing Blair as his friends place a bet that Cage can't break the ice queens cold exterior and thaw her heart. This story is the prequel to their full-length story "The Jock" where we can see more of the Blair and Cage story unfold.
Blair attends a party she doesn't want to be at only to be the target of star football player Cage. Blair though has no interest in being one of his play toys and lets her feelings be known only to have started a war between the two of them.
I had not realized this was a prequel quickie. From the short snippet of the story it looks to be an entertaining read.
The one night Blair Jensen, a studious college student decides to go to a party, it leads to her catching the unwanted attention of popular jock Cage Wilder. Something she stops before it can even begin or go further with the scene she causes, resulting in unbeknownst to her the start of a war with Cage.
I enjoyed the short story, especially when it came to Blair. The way she handled Cage and his behaviour towards her, without any hesitation or fear through the strong, sassy and fierceness she brought out proved there was definitely more to her than meets the eyes. Whilst simultaneously showing that she wasn't the stereotypical nerd that you would've expected her to be, which I loved her character for. As for Cage though he may have been arrogant and cocky, he was still an enigma to me with more to learn in regards to who he truly is.
One thing I didn’t realise upon reading theThe Nerdwas that it's a prequel, with setting up the story for what’s to come inThe Jock, between Blair and Cage. Since I was surprised at how short the story was by the end, with having hoped it would’ve been longer because it ended too soon. It's safe to say, I will definitely be addingThe Jockto my TBR to see how Blair and Cage’s story plays out.
Just an intro to meet Blair and Cage. She is the book nerd and he is the big man on campus. Their first meeting gets everyone talking. They both hate it.
This is short prequel that provides just a tempting taste of the upcoming book The Jock. This is a good way to meet the characters and get a feel for the story. I thought it was intriguing, enticing and I am definitely eager for more!
„The Nerd” is a short story of first met Cage and Blair. It is a two chapters prequel to „The Jock”, which is a book number one. The first meet between Cage and Blair wasn't good. They were on the party and when Cage wants to speak with Blair, she was like a cold woman withouth heart. But her behavior didn't discard him and Cage's put himself that he will have Blair. Life is life and events are going on the people. Blair and Cage met again in the library. Cage's coach said to him tha he must do something more with his grades. He assigns him a tutor... and this tutor was Blair. When Cage finally arrived to the rendez-vous place he was late, and Blair go away. Finally when he was talking with his friends, he proposed a bet. Blair will be his and everything will be like in old good times. He will get it?
When I ended „The Nerd” I knew that I will read next book in this series. I must meet Cage and Blair again. J.L. Beck and C. Hallman done a good job with this prequel! If you want to read „The Jock”, first read this short prequel and see how it happened at the beginning
When Blair, the shy nerd, and Cage, the football star and notorious playboy meet, sparks fly. But they’re not the sparks you think. Blair’s mistrustful of men, thanks to having a mom who went after the wrong guy time and time again. When the football god hits on her, then confronts her when he’s rejected, Blair reacts. After dumping a cup of beer over his head, she walks away. Cage isn’t ready to give up. After a second horrible encounter with Blair, he bets some of his teammates that he can change her mind and make her fall for him. Will Cage win his bet? Will Mia continue to ice him out every time he approaches her? Can’t tell ya! But I will say, you’ll want to read this story before The Jock, which is coming out tomorrow. I thoroughly enjoyed the writing, the characters, and the story. I now want to read the rest of this series of standalones from the beginning.
THE NERD Prequel to THE JOCK North Woods University series J.L.Beck & C.Hallman
Blair and Cage
POV:Dual
This is a short introduction to how Blair and Cage meet at a frat party. Until things develop Blair's a 'nerd' book smarts, not social butterfly confident. She needs to get out of her comfort zones. So when her friend Arabella tells her to meet her at a small gathering, when she gets there it turns out to be a frat party. When Cage aproaches her, she's reminded that he represents the men her Mother's been with. But admires his physique in the process, but he's not for her. Until he ruffles her up the wrong way, resulting her making a spectacle of themselves. Cage isn't pleased, so vows to make her pay. Turns out he needs help with his grades. Guess who's his tutor?........
The first impression that Cage leaves on Blair is not good. She goes to a party to which her friend Arabella invites her, and while Blair searches for her, she runs into Cage. When he tries to flirt with him, she rejects him, he calls her nerdy virgin and she pours a beer on his head, making him looks ridiculous in front of his friends. In addition, his coach tells him that if he does not upgrade his notes, he will not be able to continue playing and assigns him a tutor who turns out to be Blair. He is late for tutoring and she angrily leaves. When he tells his friends, they make fun of him, so Cage proposes a bet: he will win the ice queen heart and they will forget about the beer incident and his reputation will be reinstated. He will get it?
This is a short prequel to the upcoming novel. The authors have done a good job of whetting my appetite for more information on the interactions and the outcomes of the main male and the main female character tangling with one another. Once the sparring is over will these two be able to communicate on a different level? The hook has been well set, now the authors can real the reader's in as we experience the outcomes of the interactions between these two young adults. The upcoming novel should appeal to readers who like to delve into the intricacies of your adults trying to wend their way through the college experience in both the arenas of athletics and acadamia. Let the games begin.
This is a quick novella of The Jock. It shows how Cage and Blair met and how the bet came about. Basically Blair is your consequential nerd girl who is portrayed as a icy bitch. Cage is the football jock who is q ladies man and tries to get with Blair but she turns the tables on him and he becomes a laughing joke to his friends. So what's a guy to do when they have a hurt pride they make a bet. Im hoping this book is layered with more then the stereotypical jock and nerd romance. Will read full book once its out. So till then this was just a introductory to the characters.
Why? I understand that The Nerd is a free prequel, but two chapters, one from each characters POV. What was the point? This prequel had nothing to make it stand out or intrigue me into wanting to read or buy The Jock.
The nerd...Blair goes to a party at the jocks house, she’s uncomfortable when the hot, sexy jock...Cage whispers tauntingly in her ear. Her reaction, cool him down by dumping a beer on his head. Resulting in earning herself the name Ice Queen, Cage is furious because he’s been publicly humiliated. As per the over used storyline the jock’s grades are failing, bring in the tutor...predictably it’s...you guessed it the Ice Queen.
I first read The Nerd and realize it was an introduction to The Jock. The chemistry between Blair and Cage is hot. When she pours the beer on football star head she because Unforgettable. A bet was made With his teammates and she became a new game he was sure to win. Cage finds out she was his tutor in school. They both never stood a chance of being tutored in the heart too.
The story is entertaining, sweet, and the characters are great. This is my first read from the Northwood series and I can’t wait to read the rest.
What a fantastic intro to Blair and Cage’s story. A nerd and a jock, maybe a little cliche but this story holds so much promise. There’s definitely more than meets the eye for both characters.
I’m late to this series but, I’m drawn in by the writing of this amazing duo who I’ve meaning to read fir some time now. I can’t wait for the rest of this story and to catch up on the series.
This was terribly written, absolutely abysmal and predictable. I literally could not force myself to listen to the words in my head, so I force read it so fast like walking over hot coals, just hot coals of pure tripe. Maybe this is for some people, I am certainly not one of them. I rarely give bad reviews and I feel bad that I'm giving one, but there was not one redeeming quality in this entire story.
This is a short prequel for the upcoming book The Jock. It gives a little taste of what to expect. We are introduced to Blair and Cage, and learn how they met at a frat party.
Cage is the big man on the campus jock, and Blair is the book nerd.
This was a enticing start to their story, and I'm eager for more.
I didn't even realize that this was a prequel novella, so my bad. But this was basically 1/3 of the first chapter of #Nerd by CH. Down to the tutoring scene.
Unlike #Nerd, The Nerd is a new release, May 2020 release, so the whole girl dares to say no to the hot guy and gets dragged for it and labelled an ice queen trope? That would be a no.
Blair is an awesome character: true to herself. Cage is a stereotypical jock. The blurb is incorrect. This story does not go past their second meeting. It does not give any sense that Blair has any secrets. Under the circumstances, it does not live up to expectations.
And good! Got me anticipating the next full book. I'm looking forward to this arrogant football star being blown away by his tutor. She's going to be hurt by him at some point, I'm sure, but then he'll truly see what an ass he's been. I know this is a true scenario, because it happened to me, and my guy has been the sweetest for 30 years.
“I’d rather be reading a book, interacting with fictional characters than talking to real people.” Who else can relate to Blair’s preference to a book over forced socializing?
Short sweet, well written introduction to Blair meeting Chase, at a frat party. First impressions last.
Great introduction to The Jock and leaves you gasping for more. I already fell in love with Cage and Blair and it was only their first meeting. I ended with a smile on my face and then dived right in to The Jock.
I really don't know what this prequel adds to the main story... The nerdy tutor and the failing 'dumb jock', and the usual 'bet' to get the tutor under the jock's spell.
I read this book as part of the jock book before I started it, so it helped to lay down the foundations for this love story. I really enjoyed this but and it is a must read before starting the jock. Both well worth it.
Blair and Cage, two opposites. Blair prefers her books than to party, and Cage is the typical football player. Now Cage needs Blair to help with his grades.
