Marshall High Society #1

Hate to Remember

Rate this book
A Dark High School Bully Romance

Three powerful families. Three privileged sons.

Roman, Ethan, and Klay are dark, devilish, delicious, each in their own way.

I shouldn't even be on their radar, but they've marked me. I don't know why.

I can't remember the last two years. A mental breakdown, they tell me, after both my parents died.

I just want a fresh start to my senior year, a normal life, a graduation. But those three untouchables own Marshall High, and they're fighting over me.

Not in a pretty way. They want to own me, control me, use me for their twisted schemes.

The last one is the worst. Cold, cruel, beautiful Klay.

He doesn't want to win me. He wants to break me, and he won't stop until he succeeds.

I should run.

Call me crazy, but I can't stay away. Because I have a burning secret, a memory that I didn't forget.

I remember him.

And he doesn't want me to...

Warning: This is a dark bully romance that may contain triggers and is intended for readers over 17. Hate to Remember ends in a cliffhanger and is the first in a finished two-part series with an eventual HEA.

Trips from dark to horror with a heroine who cannot trust herself to separate reality from the paranoid delusions she’s been told she suffers from.
This could be a great, tense plot if this was in any way ambiguous to the reader but it’s not. The writing is a good match to building the atmosphere. It’s frustratingly impossible to tell what’s going on.
The book resets the whole plot at the end, which makes reading it a bit pointless.

Not sure what kinda story I read. But now I have to find out what happens so I’ll probably read the second book. But what a silly far fetched story line.....a hunt, a surgery? It’s all so very......odd but intriguing

This was just disturbing.

Titled as a high school bully romance but perhaps would have been better in a weird horror category.

It was so strange it is hard to know where to start.

In the first place when we are introduced to the heroine, she is leaving psychiatric hospital having had a breakdown and not remembering the last 2 years but when things go wrong for her in the community there is no sign of her linking in with her doctor....

The time line doesn't make sense - no one knows the heroine at school and they all ignore her but she appears to have lived there all her life?

There are no secondary female characters or friends and it appears that the whole town is made up of 'stepford wives' type people who just do what they are told by 'The Society' and are content to allow a 17 year old to be preyed upon / literally brutalized without doing anything to help her.

The 3 male protagonists were just creepy. They appear to literally be the only 3 people in school who acknowledge her existence and we are told are on 'The Hunt' for her...

Ethan's speech was bizarre as was his behaviour at times. The fact that his parents are lawyers, doesn't mean he is a lawyer. He is 17 years old ! He goes around talking about taking things to court and appears at times to suggestion to the Hapless Heroine that she will be prosecuted for prostitution due to a photoshop fake bully ad being circulated with her details on another woman's body. I mean come on.....

Also at no stage does the hapless heroine report the bullying to the school or her grand mother...?

Ethan then goes on about her giving controllership over her life to him as if that is normal and she doesn't appear to think too much of it. i repeat they are all 17. She's just out of psychiatric care. This isn't exactly the kind of thing teenagers suggest to other teenagers... Again come on...?

Roman is disgusting and just repeatedly insinuates he could buy everything and everyone. At one stage he suggests she should prostitute herself for her grandmother (who isn't that sick) and the HH seems to actually contemplate it....

As for Klay, well, his actions are gross. He pees in her locker, locks her into it, sends fake prostitution ads around the school about her...what a guy.

How could he possibly better protect her??

And yet, she loves him, she trusts him, she would do anything for him.....it's just a shame she doesn't remember him....

Really???

The only 2 adults in the book are 1. the grandmother who is a nonentity who just accepts financial support from teenage boys - as you do...
2. Klay's father who is a doctor but it turns out he is a maniacal sociopath with no scruples who wants to sacrifice the HH for his own advancement.

It all comes to a head when Klay finally tells the HH what is going on:

'The Society' runs the town and has decided that she is their next game. They drugged her to make her have amnesia so that she doesn't remember anyone...( as people do...)

The 3 boys are in 'The Hunt' to see which family can join 'the Society'.

But we aren't just talking about winner getting sex here - no it is considerably sicker than that...

Ethan has to get her to sign her life over to him by way of controllership ( so he can turn her into some kind of slave?); Roman has to get her to sell herself to him; and Klay has to get her to agree to a medical procedure to paralysise her from the neck down permanently - so that she would be entirely dependent upon him. for the rest of what would be a fairly miserable life.

The whole premise was sick.

At one stage she actually agrees to the medical procedure in order to save Klay's life when his father threatens to kill him. I mean WTF?
Luckily they decide that the time is not right so they don't proceed and instead they all agree to reset her by giving her the amnesiac drug again - so they can all try 'the Hunt' all over again...????

Putting it bluntly - being blackmailed into becoming a quadriplegic is not sexy. It is horrific.

Likewise no one in their right mind would ever agree to this simply because they fancy or were in love with another 17/18 year old full stop. Never mind this is a boy who has treated them like s### for last 4 weeks even if they vaguely remembered a more positive relationship the previous year.

There is some warped commentary about how being paralysed would mean she would be vulnerable to him as if this would somehow be sexual. The sex scenes (1 x real and 1 dream sequence) all involved her being restrained and unable to move. Again the underlying message is pretty sick.

I don't have to go into the ins and outs of reality of quadrilegia in terms of toileting, feeding, breathing difficulties, lack of feeling/physical sensation, self care , boredom and even inability to suicide etc. The bottom line is that this is horrific and not sexual.

There is a strange sinister dream like quality to the writing which gets it 2 stars but the story was just too disturbing.

Draft

2.5 stars

Plot was weak, and the storyline made little sense. Overly descriptive to the point of boredom only to arrive to do the same drug-induced memory wipe that had been performed before. This time, though, to reset what they messed up to give the appearance to the Society that the contenders were still following the rules of the game. Each guy had a game they would enact to attain status and therefore power in the Society (oh and could the name be any less creative?). For the Klay the hero it had to be making the heroine Sadie paralyzed. The others had their own game.

After finding out about the Society, and this Hunt, which went against the rules, they all agree including Sadie to reset her memory by retaking the drug in the hopes that she and Klay can figure out how to beat them. They know their love will always bring them back to each other. Not sure why she took it the first time.

What made this story untenable was : what was the point of all that had transpired? Klay spilled the beans that he could have done — and may very well have done in the past —in the beginning. This story just made no sense.

Sex scenes that start at 60/70%? And it was only a dream? I will admit that the one in the gym room was hot, but yeah, some good sexual tension but nothing until that scene and one at the end. Alas that is my personal preference but the plot was so weak, at least give the reader some steamy goodness.

In summary, the premise of the book was good. The two characters’ devotion and love for each other, heart-warming, but the plot was non-sensical and so overly descriptive as to be mind numbing. I skimmed through after 50% just get to the nuts and bolts of the story, and lost nothing. Mildly interested in the outcome, but will likely read spoiler reviews to know.

Eh.. I don't even know where to start.. I don't normally leave reviews but this book baffled me and like another reviewer said, the story is way too far fetched.
Tbh, I didn't even read the whole thing so my review might not be accurate, I think I got to chapter 8 maybe before the cringe was too much and I skipped to near the end because I can't not know how something ends, so that is what this review is based on.
First thing, if you have suffered a psychotic break and your paranoid, especially if you have amnesia, there's no trust! So anything anyone said should of had her instinctively doubting, not, for example, accepting a ride home on your first day, from a stranger who is clearly best friends with the guy who straight up abused you and you didn't have a good feeling about him either, like wtf?
I read the blurb and was expecting a strong heroine bouncing back from the difficulties in life with bullies making it hard for her then a cosy turnaround ending.. wasn't even close. Turned out to be a delusional girl, her mannerisms and general speech were similar to a child/teen not a young adult, the bullying became ridiculous because the bullies were hot-and-cold towards her and she just seemed to accept it ??
Then skipping to the end and I discover the society, the hunt... like wtf?? The whole town knows of these but her gran doesn't seem to.. they drugged her to cause the amnesia.. I originally thought she'd just had the accident where her parents died but I assume that happened when she was 9 by the info in the ending, so what? her gran just offered her up to be part of the hunt ???
As for the hunt, I'm speechless it's just so absurd.. like who the hell is going to sign up for a medical procedure to make them paralysed just because they trust them, or legally give guardianship to another 18 year old for the same reason.. she's suppose to be paranoid and have some sort of psych issues, so in normal reality she would be assuming that even her loved ones might have a secret agenda but she throws trust left, right and centre.
And the ending!! She's reset!? So she's drugged again to cause the amnesia again and start the whole thing over again in book 2.. no thanks, I don't recommend.

What did I read?

This book was just so confusing and upsetting. Sadie just made me angry throughout the entire book. She knows Ethan can't be trusted, but yet agrees to go away with him. Roman is the ultimate jerk and bully yet she continues to interact with him. Klay gave me so much whiplash with his back and forth it was ridiculous. You had really no idea what was going on until your about 80%into the book. I plan to read the second one because I want to know what happens. I gave two stars just because of klay and sadie's chemistry. First book to be read by L.V. chase.

This book was my first from this author, L.V. Chase. I had no idea what the book was about, just that it was a bully romance book.

Sadie lost her parents as a young girl in a car accident and had to go live with her grandmother. She falls victim to a traumatic event that causes her to lose here memory of the last two years. She ends up on a psychiatric ward of a hospital until they feel she is deemed ready to face society again. Once she’s released she finds herself in the second week of her senior year where everyone avoids her like the plague. What the heck!?!

Klay is a senior at the same high school as Sadie, except that he’s not from the poor side of town as she is...he’s more like one of the three richest families in the town. He lives in an enormous home made of dark metal and glass. He’s a dark guy...

I don’t want to ruin this books by giving spoilers, but this books has a unique story line that did capture my attention. The ending is a bit cliffhanger, but book two should be releasing soon. 😊

Sadie has had a mental breakdown. She doesn’t remember the last two years of her life after her parents death. It’s important to get back to her life to try and remember. She enrolled back to school but everyone ignores her. She meets the only three people who will talk to her. Ethan, Roman and Klay.

She thinks she remembers something but it’s hard to pinpoint it. Klay seems familiar but he seems to hate her. She is bullied, her locker is pissed in, she has rude photos sent around and she is shoved in her locker. There is something going on but she doesn’t know if she can’t trust herself or others. The three boys seem to each want something from her but will the truth set her free!

Just no! I can’t get over the story line. It’s not for me. The boys legit suck, the big reveal is revolting. And she is so not ready to be out, I wouldn’t trust her to order a coffee let alone make a decision

Erm...... got bored with the 3 boys and it dragged out a bit too long for me.

I skipped some of it to see the ending, hoping it would have a twist and a happy ever after, and the bit I got too was she’d had been drugged and Kyle... or whatever he was called... his dad told her she had a choice. Either she had surgery and become paralysed and or Kyle dies or something along those lines.

It got too silly for me......I’m not I’ll read the next one.

This book was a bit strange to me. I'm not really feeling the heroine or the bully. The story is very far-fetched. Not sure I will continue with the next book.
