Suzume has moved to Tokyo and is living with her uncle. With Mr. Shishio’s true feelings for her out in the open, Suzume tries her best to figure out if they are an item or not. Meanwhile, Mamura grows suspicious of Shishio and Suzume’s relationship.
I hate how Sensei bullshits around all the time.Even when he first rejected Suzume he should have stayed away...but he still came back to form a romantic relationship with her which ended up confusing her.And when she wants clear explanation to his feelings for her he breaks up with her and breaks her heart. He should have never started anything with her, however way which he chose it,he would never have been able to avoid hurting her.He is her teacher, she is his student.
In his own words,he really is a dork.Mamura is more man than he is.
I feel like we really saw how well Mamura treats Suzume vs how Shishio is just constantly leads her on,,,I really hope she realises Mamura is the perfect cutie sooooon. The scarf scene with them both was so cute!!
With Shishio accepting Suzume's feelings, she has hope and is happier, a fact noticed even by her uncle. She is still working out what their relationship is exactly, but their hang-outs seem more like dates. Shishio even wears her gift (a sushi tie), much to the ridicule of his students who think its from his girlfriend. Yuyuka, meanwhile, I could shake her for pressing Suzume to get an actual Christmas date with him - and sadly for Suzume, he is busy working that day. She goes to a Christmas party with her classmates, but feels disappointed when her hopes for having a date later get dashed. Mamura, however, notices her sadness, and asks to hang out, taking her to see some Christmas decorations, etc, and letting her confide in him, saying her birthday had been that month but she wasn't able to tell so to Shishio; Mamura later on, gets angry at Shishio when the latter tries to scold him for his attitude towards him.
I think in this book, there are hints that Suzume's heart will turn towards Mamura. He himself is being a bit distant but his anger is more for Shishio, and he is worried about Suzume getting hurt. Suzume herself is starting to realize that she can't have a normal relationship with him - she compares how her friend can easily make a lunch for her boyfriend, but she can't do so. She can't even bring herself to tell him about her birthday, and she can't be wholly herself with Shishio, or confide in him like she can with Mamura. There is a scene where the gifts from the two of them are juxtaposed against each other, that I think is very telling about the two relationships. For Shishio's part, I hope he grows up soon - just saying that because she is different, he doesn't know what to do is such an excuse. Even his roommates' commented that normally he doesn't get close to his students, so he knows what he is doing is unacceptable. Mamura scoffing at him to be an actual adult had me cheering from the sidelines, because that scene was so well-done!
I may have said this before, but I will say it again - I love how expressive the artwork is. The characters' expressions, the staging of the scenes is all well-done! Also I love how the outfits or hairstyle, etc are changed regularly, even for secondary characters. This volume also has a short story about two high school kids, with crushes, and rain, and I won't say more, because it is too beautiful in its simplicity to be spoiled about.
Received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review from Viz Media LLC, via Edelweiss.
Six volumes completed, we’re still stuck in the same repeated cycle. I thought we get to the good part around the half way mark but I clearly was wrong. I still want to hammer some sense into Shisio and scream at him to be a proper teacher for his student.
This is interesting because it's clear that it's not okay for Tsubame and Shishio to be pursuing a relationship, unlike in 90% of student/teacher shoujo. It looks like Shishio's starting to realize that, too...
Winter might be on the way, but that doesn’t mean things are cooling off between Suzume and Shishio. After an eventful birthday and a failure to lunch, our dubious duo are on a Christmas collision course where Shishio’s presence is what Suzume desires for presents. Throw in some pizza delivery and all the tie grabbing you can handle and you have one eventful volume!
This book. You can’t say that it isn’t leaning into a student-teacher romance with a gusto that many, many other books wouldn’t ever dare to achieve. Whether you can stomach that or not will wholly inform your opinion of the book. It’s almost as if the author is daring herself to see how far she can push this particular envelope.
So far, I can handle it. Largely because we have Mamura there to continually dump on idiot man-child Shishio and also to glare his affections at Suzume. He’s taking an interesting approach as a rival and I rather like it - he’s really got issues communicating and I enjoy seeing him straining to overcome that as best he can. Also, automatic four stars every time he throws his superiority as a human being back in Shishio’s face (tie grabbing is the zen moment I need every volume).
Suzume is a smitten young woman and, honestly, is really blameless in her pursuit of her crush. Sure, she might be going above and beyond in her pursuit, but I think the so-called adult in the room fighting very poorly against his urges is the one who should be putting the breaks on all of this. Unfortunately, age does not beget maturity as a rule.
To be fair, this volume really starts to chew even harder on the meat of what it would mean for a student and teacher (at the same school, sharing a class, no less!) to have a relationship and how hard it is to hide. Mamura clearly sees right through them and Shishio’s about as clever as any given Marmaduke comic, which is to say not clever at all. “I need to see you about your last assignment?” Really!?
Throw in some interesting revelations about the annoying guy going after Yayuka, who I am depressingly coming around on a lot, the dude’s just got his pride, I get it, and you have a packed volume of movement on things, with the question being what direction they’re headed.
(Also, I would put Mamura’s multiple quiet rescues of Suzume from everything that is bringing her down as 100x more romantic than anything between her and Shishio this whole freakin’ volume)
4 stars. Daytime Shooting Star is drawn to beat the band, written to drive me crazy wondering where it’s going, and making a lot of interesting hay from a terrible, inappropriate pairing. That it is at all readable is a triumph - but steer clear if even the whiff of this type of power abuse bugs you.
I AM SO DONE WITH TEACHER-STUDENT RELATIONSHIPS IN MANGA. But I just really dislike Shishio and hate the power dynamics at play here with Suzume. Mamura knows what’s up. And so do I.
really felt in this volume we see how much shishio isn’t the right love interest for suzume, he doesn’t treat her exactly right, he leads her on but then doesn’t talk to her? whereas mamura checks up on suzume and can see she is bothered by shishio not bothering with her. like during christmas he said he’ll be with suzume said he’s running late because of work and then goes and has beers with work colleagues. like dude.
the scene where mamura gives suzume his scarf. his love for her is infinite. why can’t she see it. forever begging it’ll be endgame 🥲🙏🏻
I'm enjoying these little moments between Suzume and Shishio. But I don't think it will bode well for them in the future. There is Mamura, who is pining for Suzume and the "forbidden element". So there are some troubles ahead of them. Let's see if they can overcome this. Mamura pointed out that Suzume can't even tell Shishio her birthday is a point that needs to be taken into consideration. Can this fragile but sweet romance blossom into more?
It's starting to get a little creepier and feel a little more like manipulation. I don't think we're supposed to see it that way though? Idk. Suzume just needs to hurry up and shift her feelings over to Mamura, who is PRECIOUS. And Shishio needs to find himself a nice adult.
This story is SO addicting, I'm so glad they only had the first seven books at my local bookstore, because I seriously need to work on my assignments ^^ 3.75
This volume is proof to me that Mamoru is best boy! I am still rooting for him and Suzume to be together in the end instead of her and the teacher. The age gap relationship doesn't make sense to me at all in this one. I am a firm believer that Mamoru, who supports her happiness even at the expense of his own, will win out in the end, because Suzume continues to notice the nice things that he does fo her. If he doesn't win in the end, I will protest.
A voir donc.
I know that from reading some reviews the whole teacher student romance is a bit… 😬 but hey didn’t we all have a crush on a teacher at some point? I mean sure it didn’t go far as this story has, which is why I’d given it a four ⭐️
It’s a great read and it gets my heart fluttering because the story is relatable in some context but yeah as this story is progressing there is a lot to realise that the two cannot be together. Sure the age gap is like 8 years or something but if she were an adult it wouldn’t matter.
All in all, the story is nice and I’d definitely see where it goes. At first I was all oh yes cute little romance, but now that it is progressing to stuff like kissing a student (even tho he hadn’t) i realised that it could never work for the teacher and student. Kinda leaning towards the other guy who is in her class. BUT still great read. I still like the teacher and this forbidden romance 🥀
“For you. So, don't look like you're going to cry. Laugh." Telling me this, at this moment, makes me want to cry even more.”
My heart feels like it's being ripped in two, I'm so torn about who I really like best! This is probably one of the best examples of a well executed love triangle, usually I always have a very strong preference for one person or the other, and it's usually extremely obvious who will ultimately get the happy ending. But surprisingly, Mamura is just as charming as Satsuki, (the scarf scene being a prime example!) just in a very different way. It does still seem like Suzume will end up with Satsuki though (maybe that'll change in the future?). I'll stop rambling now lolol.
I’ve come to be okay with this budding romance because on further investigation, they have a similar age gap to me and my fiancé. It’s just inappropriate with these two characters right now 🤣
Los últimos 3 capítulos de este volumen literal fueron un jump scare tipo estaba comiendo y vi que se estaban por chapar y me ATRAGANTÉ dije man todo menos eso x dios
4.5 stars. I really like this volume and the extra bonus piece. I want more Mamura. Also, I'm getting super anxious about the relationship teetering either way.
The character art is beautiful in this series, but again, there isn’t enough that distinguishes one person from the next. Take our heroine, for example, Suzume looks much like the character in the bonus story and other than the updo, she looks like Tsuru in her own story. Even physical mannerisms are similar. When Tsuru is called out for making lunches for Inukai, her awkward body shifts mirror those Suzume manifests when uncomfortable around Shishio. And speaking of uncomfortable... Mr. Shishio needs to grow up! Bad, bad adult in a position of authority! Mika Yamamori seems to have a thing for this particular problematic trope. Mamura needs to step up and say what he’s feeling for Suzume. At least that may give her a reason to stop pining for her teacher. I guess if the series is getting me so emotionally invested, it’s doing something right.
Shishio almost kissed Suzume. He is a teacher and she is a high school student. Begging for this “relationship” to end right now. These 3 stars go to the cute little Christmas scene between Mamura and Suzume because I felt like it was one of those moments where it’s like please realize what’s in front of you. Also goes to Mamura for having the common sense to notice what’s happening between them and saying something to Shishio about it. Cannot wait for Shishio to be the adult in this scenario and for Suzume to realize Mamura has been there the whole time just waiting for her!

you know what we can ship shishio with? jail time. y'all have no idea how much i'd like to punch him in the face so he stops pursuing a romantic relationship with a student. like, if you want to date someone just go and find yourself an adult and leave the 15-year old girl alone, for god's sake.
the only good thing this volume had was mamura giving his scarf to suzume as a birthday present. those two are adorable and i want them to end up together.
