As a child, Nick watched monsters tear his parents apart. No one had believed him about what happened in the cave that day. His life was changed forever and not just by the trauma. Now, the monsters are back threatening the very world itself. Accompanied by a squad of heavily armed and highly trained soldiers, Nick must return to the cave to stop the creatures that killed his parents from invading the Earth before it's too late.
This was properly scary. The military devoting so few troops was even plausible. The government is probably afraid to draw much attention to the invasion and the excuse that it was too expensive to commit more than a reinforced infantry company (the U.S. military has a 650 billion dollar annual budget) could possibly be a governmental decision.
Once you're past that hurdle (which isn't very hard), crazy horror/science fiction action ensues. It works well, except for constant editing errors, which seem equally distributed across the book. Despite the editing, it's very readable. It's a fast, fun, plausible and scary book. I'm looking forward to reading more by this writer.
I can't say I can recommend this one. While the author has a pretty fun idea (psychic hero with military squad faces off against a Lovecraft-y bug dimension), he blazes through the story way too quickly, hits a few inconsistencies (including killing off a character who is then immediately fine? Editing issue?), and completely undermines his own character's heroic deeds with a predictable-but-unnecessary "gotcha" ending. The positives are that Mr. Brown is a truly decent writer and that, although it does his story a disservice, the fast pace and short length make it so I don't feel like I wasted my time as badly as I might have had it been longer and still ended the same way.
This one was a little rough. I get if you don't like swear words, and don't want to use them, sure, but maybe don't write about elite soldiers in a situation where swearing is going to happen. Also, what a bizarre ending. *spoilers* First, the author just kind of forgot about 2 characters, which we last see trying to lure away some bad guys, and then at the end, we get a flash forward 8 years that ends on a cliff hanger. I'm going to try more of the authors work though, because he writes about some cool ideas.
What a fun book if you like creepy crawly things. I enjoyed reading it though sometimes it was a bit graphic for me. I know a person dies if a creature grabs hold of them - I don't need the gooey, gory details.
Nick is a great character who is touched by the intelligence of this entity from another realm. In the end, that would be it's undoing.
Reminded me, somewhat, of the movie "Pacific Rim".
It appears this went from first draft straight to publication. I don’t believe anyone bothered to edit this book. Originally, I was going to say it was edited by a child, no a small child, but that would be insulting to the child. Terrible script, clunky dialogue, easily the worst book I’ve read by this author. At least fake like you care. Don’t waste your money on this one!
Seems a rather disjointed story. Nothing is resolved. Nothing is really answered. Considering this seems to be a stand alone book and not a series I have to say this was a really badly written story that could have actually been something fun to read. Do not recommend to others.
As the subject line says this book was a quick, fun ride but needed another revision before publication. Not my favorite of Brown’s, but not too shabby.
