Blair C. Howard is a Royal Air Force veteran, a retired journalist, and the best-selling author of more than 50 novels, including the international best-selling Harry Starke series, and 23 travel books. In 2021, having been fascinated by the heavens almost from childhood, and a SciFi fan for almost as long, he decided to try his hand at writing a military space opera. His first journey into this genre resulted in the Sovereign Stars series. Book 1 in the series, Avenger was quickly followed by Gods of War and Armored Fleet.
Blair lives in East Tennessee with his wife Jo, and Jack Russell Terrier, Sally.
Sapphire (Lt. Kate Gazzara #4), my ninth read from author Blair Howard and the fourth in the Lt. Kate Gazzara series. Before reading Jasmine (Lt. Kate Gazzara #1), my sixth read from author Blair Howard and the fourth in the Lt. Kate Gazzara series I'd only read the author's Civil War & Civil War/Western Series. Well-written and enjoyable detective fiction, each book in the series better than the last. There have been some timeline issues as earlier books in the series have been published later than the following resulting in partners still present after having been written out of the series. Victoria (Lt. Kate Gazzara #5), my tenth read from author Blair Howard and the fifth in the Lt. Kate Gazzara series. Well-written and enjoyable detective fiction, each book in the series better than the last. Genevieve (Lt. Kate Gazzara #6), my eleventh read from author Blair Howard and the sixth in the Lt. Kate Gazzara series. Well-written and enjoyable detective fiction, each book in the series better than the last. I look forward to Cassidy, the next book in this series. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
I haven't gotten tired of Kate Gazzara yet and I've trekked through books 1-6 in this series. She's an ambitious cop who just about can't force herself to slow down or take a break when she's working a hot case. The same is true when she's working cold cases. She does run into numerous conflicts with coworkers making me wonder if she has a death wish. She won't back down to anyone and her job could be in peril because of her attitude. Not that she's not justified in standing up to those she challenges. They're low-down and scary. Still...she pushes co workers hard just like she does criminals. I like Dr. Sheldon, the Medical Examiner, a lot. Hes so competent, has a caustic personality and he works so well with Kate. Another highlight of reading these books is the time you'll spend in Chattanooga. Beautiful, scenic, rivers and mountains fill the pages. Take a trip around Chattanooga with Kate.
Interesting stories. I liked the characters and the cases were interesting. I struggled with the first person point of view, which surprised me as I would normally really like that. I think it was the narrator aspect of telling the stories from the past that I struggled with. And there was a bit of not quite cheesiness but something similar to that with which I just didn't connect. That being said I enjoyed the fifth and sixth stories much more than the fourth one. They had a different structure that worked better for me. Although I still found myself doing quite a bit of skimming. Except in the sixth one. That one I read completely and would rate at four stars.
I love the writing of Blair Howard. Having read the Harry Starke series up to the latest, I'm reading about Catherine (Kate) Gazzara, in part because the characters are linked. It is really best to read the series in order because the way Blair Howard writes, with his principal character speaking in the first person the reader really is following the character's life and career as it unfolds. And how the stories unfold! I find every one gripping. I am loving them!
I like that this writer lets his characters get dirty. Some quit. All age. And they learn, the hard way. And yet anyone could start at any point of the series and understand the characters. The characters are well defined and introductions to new people are as necessary and entirely recognizable, like the person who has the ring doorbell. The storylines are well provided with clues.
The real thing! Cases aren't wrapped up in 60 minutes!
I like these books because they are realistic and show the efforts and the amount of work required to close cases. We are used to seeing TV shows where they wrap everything up in an hour. They are well written and researched. The only thing I don't like is they need editing.
An amazing main character. Her wonderful assortment of fellow police and former police help her solve a host of crimes. Some horrific criminals are brought to justice. You feel like your there watching it happen.
Read the first 3 last week the second set of three this weekend, highly recommend this series, strong female lead character, well paced with twists and turns that keep you engrossed and interested.
A thoroughly enthralling set of books which, as well as dramatic and thrilling, kept me on the edge just waiting for the next event in this forever unfolding dramatic series
This whodunnit is based on logical and complicated detective work. I particularly liked her personal tone when writing. It seemed like she was speaking to me. I look forward to her next writing.
Kate moved from Lt. to Captain and is breaking in a new team
Kate gets a promotion the hard way and is breaking in her new team with a high profile case that could blow up and put an end to all their careers if they don’t find the murderer fast.
Liked the way these stories are written, they are gritty and the main character is determined. Like the fact she seems opinions of others and gather the random facts. Thanks Throughly enjoyable read
I really enjoyed this series. It was clean, imagine that… bad language doesn’t have to be a part of this type book. I loved the characters and how they went about solving the crimes.
I love to read mystery novels that keep you guessing. Lt. Kate Gazzara does her job and stumbles around like a real person. Then slowly moves into the next day trying to solve the case. I couldn’t put it down.
Excellent reading. I am fan. Now following the author.

SAPPHIRE. This is fourth book in the Kate Gazzara series and the story flows easily as Lt Kate Gazzara plus her partner Lonnie are asked to head up a Cold Case Unit and told they must give priority to the eight year old 'Sullivan' case by the chief who is determined Kate will solve it quickly albeit happened over 8 years ago. Very early on Kate meets women whose sister went missing and was no longer being investigated and on listening to her story decides to change priorities taking up the case. With her priority changed Kate faces awkward internal politics and also watches out for both her superior Henry Finkle who is the pain of her life and her lazy ex partner called Casey. The plot twists and turns with some good unexpected undertones and developments put in for good measure to keep you turning the pages until the final conclusion. Blair Howard always writes a smooth believable story with characters you can believe in, he also adds a bit of sparkle and a touch of humour.
VICTORIA. This is book 5 and yet another master piece story about Lt Kate Gazzara which just grabs you and your attention until you’ve finished it! I just love the easy flow and how the story leads you along giving some humour along with very gritty crimes and murders. Kate now appointed with her new partner Janet Toliver following the retirement of Lonnie Guest get called to a very gruesome and brutal murder of an extremely wealthy and saintly women called Victoria Randolph in her home in the exclusive estate. With evidence at first pointing to her husband and maybe the cleaning lady who claimed to have found her things however change dramatically when the investigation is followed by another brutal murder then another; but somehow these are all linked. Kate is still being sexually harassed and verbally abused by her captain Finkle until Kate can take no more and reports him to her chief a man called Johnston only to get surprising results! The plot as always has plenty of twists and turns some good unexpected undertones and developments then a bit of humour in-between the blood and guts to keep you turning the pages right up until the final conclusion. Blair Howard always writes a silky smooth yet believable story with characters you can believe in and relate to some in house tensions and back stabbing and all rolled in a nice tight action crime thriller. A must read for CSI, crime and detective thriller fans. “I loved this easy to read book!”

Nothing is as it seems and with the wealthy family throwing threats against Kate and her team Kate has to slowly piece by piece can Kate get to the truth and uncover the truth and the killers. Like all the previous books it just grabs you and your attention until you’ve finished it! I just love the easy flow and how the story leads you along giving some humour along with very gritty crimes and murders. Kate now appointed with her new partner Janet Toliver follow the plot which as always has plenty of twists and turns some good unexpected undertones and developments then a bit of humour in-between. Blair Howard always writes a silky smooth yet believable story with characters you can believe in and relate to some in house tensions and back stabbing and all rolled in a nice tight action crime thriller.
