Discover the remarkable life of Brian Boru... Free BONUS Inside! Ireland is a country steeped in history, myth, and legend. During ancient times a long line of kings reined over this fairytale land, and one of those kings was a man named Brian Boru. His body is buried at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Armagh where countless admirers of his life still come to visit. Brian Boru sounds like someone you think you went to high school with, not an Irish king born in 941 CE and someone who is still being honored today. The 1,000 year anniversary of the Battle of Clontarf and Boru’s death was commemorated in 2014.
I love Hourly History books for two reasons: 1. The subject is presented in a concise, well-written format that allows me to decide if I wish to pursue the topic in more depth. 2. They also prove my point that a good book does not need to be 400 pages long. About bees.
This book offers a good, brief history of one of the most famous high kings of Ireland. It documents his rise from a guerrilla fighter against Norse invaders to uniting Ireland under his rule. The book is careful to acknowledge that much of what we "know" about Boru is shrouded in myth and explicitly states whenever the evidence doesn't necessarily match the traditional story. This is an easy read for anyone who wants to know more about their Irish heritage.
If you have ever had even a passing contact with Irish people, or their descendants overseas, the name of Brian Boru has to have come up. And unlike many of the mythical heros and heroines, it is easy to say and remember. So here's a quick biography that also manages to include the historical context. Another great job by Hourly History.
Just what I needed – a concise overview of Brian Boru's life, his rise to power, the main players in Ireland at the time, and a brief comment on the legacy of the events. Actually very helpful as a supplement to heavier texts such as the much drier An Illustrated History of Ireland from Ad 400 to 1800 by Mary Francis Cusack, which I'm ploughing through at time of review.
In true Hourly History fashion another straight forward history lesson that is filled with a depth of information and delivered in an understandable and short format.
This was a great little read about Brian B ow, High King of Ireland. I really enjoyed it and learned some things e never knew before! Highly recommend!
Was Brian Boru an important historical figure? Maybe but this book doesn't make a strong case for it. Allegedly he kicked the Vikings out of Ireland, but the book admits that that isn't even probably true.
Obviously, from the title, this is not a comprehensive historical narrative. I find these one-hour histories great teasers. If you just want a quick overview of a subject, they are perfect. Other than his name I really didn't know anything about Brian Boru. Next time I did into more detailed Irish history I'll have a bit of background.
the famous high king of Ireland. it was brief biography about him but it successfully made me interested in him. highly recommended, you'd feel like you are reading a fantasy medieval kingdom novel.
