When Sheriff Bud Shumway’s aunt and uncle invite him and his wife to join them for a vacation in beautiful Glacier National Park, he has no idea that he'll soon be on a search for their daughter, the same cousin Bud went to high school with and who everyone called the Jewel of the Desert. But Bud's not sure what he can do to help, especially given the strange circumstances surrounding her disappearance and the fact that she vanished some 25 years ago. Being Bud, he doesn’t let that stop him, and when his uncle also goes missing, Bud soon finds himself trekking through some of the wildest and most remote mountains in the Lower 48, a landscape filled with grizzly bears, sudden blizzards, thru-hikers, wiener dogs, aquatic entomologists, mysterious Red Bus jammers, and Flat-Earthers, far from Bud’s comfort zone in his quiet little desert town of Green River, Utah, all while trying to unravel the mystery of the Ghost of the Weeping Wall, as well as meeting up with a few ghosts of his own.
I have read all the Cafe books and am quite as I won't get to be spending time with Bud,Wilma Jean and the dogs. The last couple of books have really tugged at my heartstrings. Bud is on vacation in northern Montana and once again ventures into Canada. He is not only on a mission to find his Uncle and his dachshund who has run off, he is trying to solve the disappearance of his cousin, Jewell 25 years ago.I
You have to get used to Bud's easy going demeanor and laid back way to really enjoy these books. I highly recommend all of them. Just sit back and let him take you with him. I do hope there are more in the future.
In this likable mystery in Chinle Miller’s long-running series, Sheriff Bud Shumway, his wife Wilma Jean, three dogs, and a select group of friends are off on vacation to Glacier National Park and neighboring Waterton Park in Canada. The tale is more travelogue than whodunit, but the hiking trails—some notably rugged and demanding—are grand enough to keep readers engaged. Miller writes with genuine authority about this remarkable region, right down to high tea in the Prince of Wales Hotel. The characters are appealing too, especially Bud and his pups.
And there is a puzzle to be solved. It’s not a nail-biter but very much in tune with the rest of this satisfying book.
What a bang surprise finish! The hiking endeavors will stick with me a long time; I've had a few of my own. I am glad I do not have to solve a murder/mystery every time I go somewhere! I'm still hooked on this series.
This book is definitely a winner. It keeps your interest and it is difficult to put down because I wanted to see what happened next. I really enjoyed reading the book.
I have thoroughly enjoyed Bud Shumway and his entire series of tales. Miller is a solid and descriptive writer with realistic plot points and an amazing ability to bring you into the book’s locations. I have never visited any of the settings of the books but Miller brings them to life with the joy and detailing of a naturalist. She truly loves these beautiful wild places and passes that to her protagonist Bud. Bud, by the way, is Everyman and totally lovable himself. His search for the perfect hobby and how to have ice cream in his daily coffee while staying in shape is alway entertaining.
The mysteries are almost a sidebar for the settings but are nicely thought out and executed. Bud is no Holmes or Poirot - a highly refreshing approach that lets the reader follow along, always in Bud’s head as he ponders. This book features Pierre, Bud’s “Weiner Dog” and a lost and presumed-dead cousin. Set in and around Yellowstone Natural Park, it charms the reader and educates us with Miller’s extensive knowledge of the remote and solitary outdoors. The action is realistic as the cast of mature-but-healthy adults encounters bears, moose, and other apex predators as the main danger source, with possible murderers all along the way. Miller writes what she knows and it’s convincing - nature and humans are dangerous.
Sadly I have read all of the series and now must start over, but revisiting Green River and the Melon Cafe will be just engaging the second time. I also want to note that I give these books away as gifts all the time and get thanked most heartily! Read them - read them all!
The Bud Shuyman Mystery Series is a mystery series with a twist but for the most part a good twist. A good number of colorful characters, the protagonist Bud is a hard guy to describe other than he lives life a day at a time, and at times likes doing nothing other than reflect on life, ideally with some ice cream. Ice cream being my favorite food I can’t help but love Bud.
The stories sometimes are a bit much. With all the business dealings Bud’s wife has and how they can acquire major assets in hours where in my world it takes days if not weeks, and the way they spend money, I think I missed the book where they must have won a the lottery big time.
But I can deal with the sometimes to much silliness for the overall entertainment.
This book, the last in this wonderful series so far, was awesome. The author paints such a vivid picture of the landscape and all the very interesting characters Bud and his wife, Wilma Jean interact with, you feel as though you're right there with them! I especially love that they're doggie people like me!
Now that I've reached the end of this series, I'm sad because I'm going to miss these characters who have become like family to me all this time I've read these books. They really grow on you! Hopefully before long, a fourteenth Bud Shumway adventure will appear!
Bud and Wilma Jean enjoy a vacation away from Green River with their dogs and friends Doc and Chet and wives. Of course hiking and mystery and photography are involved while Bud is pulled into the mystery of his cousin's disappearance and a ghost story. What is real and who is who ?
Grand series , The characters are great, Historical information and geographic information is a bonus to the story. Convoluted plot and quirky characters . Dogs and there antics, How the National Parks run and hiking trails included.
Chinle Miller has done it again. Her word descriptions are wonderful and puts you right there in the location. Each new adventure that Bud has makes me wish I was right there with him. I highly recommend this series.
There is just a tiny mystery in this story, and Bud figures it out. You will learn about Glacier Park, and some about a famous hotel in Canada. You will go on a long hike because Piere is tracking marment.
This was an overly long travel guide and so slow moving that I used it as a sleep aid. After a while I no longer cared about the story. Very disappointed! I'll never get those long hours back.
