In It Started with a Secret, Lainey and Kit, looking to take on new jobs, signs up to help a large family organize their house and their lives. Each member of the family is going through their own turmoil, so they need all the help they can get. But in order to qualify for the job, they had to pretend to be a couple. This one little fib kicks off what turns out to be a fun-filled and heartwarming adventure for everyone involved.
This is a quintessential Jill Mansell: lighthearted, funny, and absolutely feelgood. The characters are all quirky and fun, and you can't help but cheer for them to find their happiness. Yes, it's a bit cheesy in the end when it all works out for every single person, but it never feels overly saccharine, so it still comes across as satisfying and authentic.
I only gave this one 3 stars because the story didn't quite grab my heart the way other Mansell books have done in the past. I think it's because this one has a lot of characters and multiple diverging/intersecting storylines, so it ended up feeling a little bit chaotic. But honestly, I still had so much fun reading it. Once I started, I couldn't put it down. I wrapped myself in a cozy blanket and pretty much gulped the whole thing down in a day.
Mansell has this way of taking a light and fluffy genre (chick-lit) that's been done every which way, and making it into something new and interesting. Each of her books and characters feels unique, and it's the reason I keep coming back to her. Even though this isn't my favorite book of hers, it still brought me so much joy to read it and to immerse myself in that world. There are so many Mansell books I haven't read yet, and I'm already looking forward to my next one.

MY THOUGHTS: A lovely light read that is touching and funny without being silly. Think of sunlight, laughter and love . . . with more than a few complications.
The characters are a delightful bunch of offbeat personalities. Three generations of one family and a young couple who arrive to take care of them, all with secrets that will gradually be revealed. There is an aged movie star, his widowed daughter-in-law, with her twin teenaged daughters, their younger brother, and her adult step-son and his endless succession of women. Add to this a woman stalking the movie-star and Seth's flibbertigibbert of a mother who pop in and out of the storyline, and you have a cleverly crafted conference of characters who both amuse and enchant. Plus, of course, Kit and Lainey who are living a lie in order to keep their jobs.
This is a wonderful read, a one sitting read, a read that will leave you smiling and happy. I have a great collection of well-thumbed Jill Mansell paperbacks on my bookshelves. It Started With A Secret will be joining them.

This is exactly the kind of novel the world needs right now. It’s happy and fun and I liked everybody.
When Lainey and Kit lose their jobs through no fault of their own, they concoct a lie and secure jobs helping out with a wealthy family—a famous, now old actor, his widowed daughter, her three kids, and their dogs and cats. Lainey is immediately attracted to the actor’s grandson, but because of her secret, she can’t act out on those feelings.
This book is filled with romance. It’s a very light summer read.

It started with a secret by Jill Mansell was fun...like soap opera fun! I do miss All my children! Out of work Lainey and her BFF Kit take a job caring for a retired actor and his Zany family. Just watch the antics ensue...

This book is not my typical read...but a nice change of pace. The characters were all quirky and enjoyable...each with their own story and laugh out loud moments...making this book perfect for a summer beach read!

This was a lovely heart warming book, I loved it. It was so warm and I could picture where the characters lived, the sunshine and the sea. This book kept you interested all the way through . I used to read every Jill Mansell books that came out, then I drifted away for awhile but, now I’m back ready to read more!!!

Jill Mansell practically qualifies as a genre of her own—somewhere between chick-lit and romance. It's not quite chick-lit because the story spreads out among a group of people, and doesn't really have a growth-arc concentration. And they generally feature a couple of romances and it's not always easy to pick out a "main" one. But if you know that coming into the story, it mostly works out pretty well. And I enjoyed this one very much.
Lainey was immediately sympathetic and searching for a new job because the one she had closed down was an interesting start. And I liked her growing friendship with Kit who was in the same situation. Better, it's a fun twist on the fake relationship because a) Kit is gay so obviously not the romantic focus (for Lainey) and b) they were, I dunno, middle friends? Not best friends but still pretty friendly, so they trust each other and have a great friendship dynamic but there's still some distance and probing and give and take going on.
And the new position they find (that is searching for "a couple" that prompts the fake relationship) is a great chaotic mess with a make-do family that really needs a couple of organized people who can get crap done. And Chase, as the mostly-head of that family was a great lead, and match for Lainey, too. His PoV sections weren't quite as engaging as Lainey's, but that was a high bar, anyway. I liked him and the care for his family was nurturing and I loved how devoted he was to his step-mother and half-siblings. He's a bit of a stick-in-the-mud, but he gets over that and he did have a lot to deal with along the way.
Two bits I want to pull out. First, I loved, more than a little, the Wyatt side-story. Wyatt has a bit-part in the beginning so I was surprised to find him as a PoV later on. His journey is the only real growth arc, and it's a fantastic one and (take the spoiler seriously because you'll miss a great twist if you know in advance) I cried, just a little, at .
Second, I'm still not sure what I think about Chase's big crisis in the later stage of the story. It draws things out a bit but it also has a weird dynamic on his character. It makes sense because it's a big thing and could reasonably have a number of reactions, all reasonable. And he would totally react with a pull-back and shut-down. But it felt a bit convenient to the plot because they needed a bit of a draw-out for other plots to catch up and the relationship needed a cross to show how attached they are (or aren't). And it resolved a bit weirdly. And yeah, all of that is vague because it isn't worth the spoilers and the details aren't really important. I just want to flag that the plot goes a bit wonky and I'm not sure if it worked or not.
At any rate, I enjoyed myself immensely and end up with 4½ stars that I'm rounding to five. A good story and some great romances with wonderful found-family dynamic.
A note about Chaste: While sex might or might happen with some in the story, there's nothing in a reader viewpoint. So it's pretty chaste, and even the underwear swimming scene had no real steam as it was too cold to linger...

Take ALL the issues: losing a job, dating, paternity, degenerative disease, death/grief, homosexuality, jealousy, family, fame, romance… mix them in your Kitchen Aid, then pop them in the oven and you’ve baked yourself this book.

When Lainey and her friend Kit find themselves out of work at the chateau they have been working at, they begin the look for new jobs. One is offered to help out with a chaotic family in a Cornish Village. The family are looking for a couple, so Lainey and Kit lie, it's only a little lie, but a lie all the same.
The family are indeed a madcap and riotous bunch and also friendly and in need of help, so Lainey and Kit are hired. While this seems ok, there is a slight problem and that is Seth, he is one of the family and there is an attraction between hi and Lainey. If only she hadn't lied!
This was such a wonderful story and it is the first time I have read a book by this author, what a fabulous introduction I have had. This is a story that I found completely absorbing and so addictive. I loved the family, such a wonderful bunch of characters and I could imagine them so easily from what I discovered about them.
Nothing in the story is straight forward and this added to the intrigue of the book. There were many surprises along the way as well as some humorous, heartwarming and soul-searching moments for various characters. The characters covered a wonderful array of traits and had good personalities. By the end of the book, I felt I had come to know a few of them very well and I found myself really caring about them.
The pacing of the story was wonderful and the story flowed so well, it was effortless reading and was able to just relax and enjoy every word. This is an author I am definitely going to read more of and I am delighted that she has so many books that I can choose from.
If you are a fan of well written contemporary romance that has a fabulous storyline and great characters then you are going to love this book as much as I did. It is one I would absolutely recommend.

What a great light summer, fun read. Lots of stories with great characters. This was my first book by Mansell, but it won't be my last. I am on the look out for more as you are reading this review.

Lainey and her gay best friend Kit have just lost their jobs in a French chateau and have returned to England with nowhere to live and looking for a new job. When Lainey sees a position for a couple to help run a home in the idyllic seaside village of St Carys in Cornwall, her and Kit pretend to be a loving couple and apply for the job.
They are soon making themselves invaluable to the family who live in the majestic Menhenrick House, including Sir Richard Myles, a well known retired actor now in his 70s, his daughter in law Majella, her stepson Seth, 3 kids and 2 dogs.
Having not had much luck with relationships, Lainey is definitely not looking for love but she is attracted to Seth, who in turn is attracted to her, but believes her to be in a relationship with Kit. As the chemistry grows between the pair, Lainey has no idea how Seth will react when he finds out the truth.
I have to admit, I enjoyed this much more than I thought I would. I have not read a Jill Mansell book before, and to be honest, I would generally pass them by, thinking they were not for me. I used to read what I would consider to be chick lit several years ago, but having had my eyes opened to all the other books out there, I have moved away from this genre and the few I have read in the last couple of years have been disappointing.
But this was an absolute delight. Having written around 30 books, Jill Mansell has a huge talent for writing readable stories with likeable characters that are truly uplifting. One of the things I dislike about this genre is the endless misunderstandings that seem to be major plot points – I find them frustrating and a little contrived. Mansell doesn’t do this at all – the story is gentle and flows well, and it made me feel happy! I’ll definitely be on the lookout for more of her books now – the perfect remedy to these long, dreary winter evenings!

And while Lainey is not looking for a new relationship, can it be that there are sparks flying between her and Seth? But Seth believes she's in relationship with Kit... Oh, if only she hasn't lied at the beginning...
I have read and enjoyed all Jill Mansell's books and I now I can't imagine a January without her new release. I know I'm in a pair of safe hands when starting Ms Mansell's novel. Actually, I've read this book almost in one sitting, and yes, it was also because my review copy arrived realllllly late and I had to be quick to be ready for my blog tour stop, but also because this book was a real joy.
As usual, the author introduces us to a bunch of such brilliant and vivid characters! Even if at the beginning you may wonder what they may have in common, are they so significant to each other, you then learn that they all fill a purpose and you get a perfectly satisfying and neatly wrapped up end. However, before it happens, be prepared for a wonderful rollercoaster journey, full of twists and turns - as nothing is straightforward in this story.
I quickly grew fond of the characters and found myself really caring about them, and this is always a sign of really well written cast. Lainey was an absolutely smashing leading heroine, there was something special in her, and she had this incredible talent to feel well and comfortable not only in her own skin but also in every single place and around all people. She was easy - going, had a great relationship with every single member of the family and she was so sensitive that she always knew when somebody had a secret or was in troubles, bringing out the best in each person. She was kind, quirky and bubbly, full of life and it is impossible not to like her from the very beginning.
I loved the way Seth was written - not at all straightforward, there was so much more to him than met the eye, and behind this mysterious personality he's been hiding a huge heart. He was honest, charming and always fair and I really liked him. It was a wonderful and bright story, this time a little bit more light - hearted than Jill Mansell's previous novels - yes, also touching about some more serious matters but I think that overall the tone was simply lighter, and I enjoyed this fact immensely. Next to the lightness and humour there are also some more poignant, deeper, soul - searching moment and events and the author has balanced them perfectly.
"It Started with a Secret" is a fast - paced story that flows effortlessly and feels so natural. The writing style is colourful, vivid and chatty and I immediately felt at home with the storyline and the book is so readable, if it makes sense? The plot is interesting and unique, and feels like a breath of fresh air, and even though there are plenty of characters (charming characters, let me add) it is so easy to keep on track with all of them. I enjoyed it from start to finish, but I didn't expect to be different, and I can easily assure you - go, buy the book and thank me later for recommendation! It's a gorgeous gem of a book!

I have read and enjoyed all Jill Mansell's books and I now I can't imagine a January without her new release. I know I'm in a pair of safe hands when starting Ms Mansell's novel. Actually, I've read this book almost in one sitting, and yes, it was also because my review copy arrived realllllly late and I had to be quick to be ready for my blog tour stop, but also because this book was a real joy.
As usual, the author introduces us to a bunch of such brilliant and vivid characters! Even if at the beginning you may wonder what they may have in common, are they so significant to each other, you then learn that they all fill a purpose and you get a perfectly satisfying and neatly wrapped up end. However, before it happens, be prepared for a wonderful rollercoaster journey, full of twists and turns - as nothing is straightforward in this story.
I quickly grew fond of the characters and found myself really caring about them, and this is always a sign of really well written cast. Lainey was an absolutely smashing leading heroine, there was something special in her, and she had this incredible talent to feel well and comfortable not only in her own skin but also in every single place and around all people. She was easy - going, had a great relationship with every single member of the family and she was so sensitive that she always knew when somebody had a secret or was in troubles, bringing out the best in each person. She was kind, quirky and bubbly, full of life and it is impossible not to like her from the very beginning.
I loved the way Seth was written - not at all straightforward, there was so much more to him than met the eye, and behind this mysterious personality he's been hiding a huge heart. He was honest, charming and always fair and I really liked him. And Majella, oh my word, Majella and her dating disasters were absolutely brilliant, finally some dates that felt original, fresh and naturally funny. This book hit just the spot. It was light and airy and full of fun characters and lots of happy at the end.
Jill Mansell has perfected this lane and she stays in it. Sometimes she colors outside her own lines, some of her books skew a littler darker and heavier-- even for her special brand of fizzy chick lit. Some just don't have the sparkle or the characters are duds. This one, though, hits every on every cylinder: Great banter, engaging individual plots, root-worthy romances, and nice little surprise ways in seeing how all the various characters' lives and stories intersect.
The main character is Lainey. She is one of those bright, energetic people with lots of optimism. She and her bff Kit work in the hospitality industry at a vacation destination chateau in France owned and operated by an older couple. Only the couple can't keep up with the extravagant expenses to keep the chateau going and the most recent event there, a very public staged engagement proposal by a multimillionaire to his girlfriend does not go as planned so they won't get the income they'd been counting on for the grand wedding. Hence they have to close and Lainey and Kit are out of a job.
On their way back to London they happen upon an advert for a live-in couple to work as household staff for a family. The advertisement makes the family sound fun and the two are a bit desperate for work. But, the catch, they are not a couple. Lainey just broke up with her player boyfriend and Kit is gay. But they tell a small fib. Hence the title of the book.
As you can guess that small fib works as a bit of conflict of the book.
For Lainey that is Seth, the oldest son of the family they are working for. Seth is one who hires them, having done a back ground check vetting them. Lainey and Kit vow to make sure no one would ever doubt they are a couple so as to not muck up their new job. Yeah... that doesn't go so well.
While Lainey and Seth are pretty much the main characters, the books if filled with a lot of other good characters. Seth's entire family have their own side plots, as does Kit and even the multimillionaire from the failed engagement party in France.
All in all this was a quick, easy and super enjoyable read. Just the sort of book that is perfect for the summer and definitely something to lighten the mood when you need something to do just that.

It is always a pleasure to sit down and read a brand new Jill Mansell book, and this was no exception.
I was drawn into the story immediately, and couldn't help bu keep turning the pages to see what would happen next.
The book returns to a familiar sounding area of Cornwall for Jill Mansell fans, St. Carys, which is made up of some bays that I definitely recall seeing as settings before. However if you have never read a book from the author don't fear it truly is 100% a standalone, I've never met any of these characters before.
Lainey and Kit are good friends but pose as a couple to get a new job looking after a large family which includes a famous older relative, a single mother, teenage twin girls, an 11 year old son and a gorgeous adult step brother - who need organisation, odd jobs and generally managing.
I loved all the members of this family, some of which get far more of of a story than others, but I loved Richard and how he doesn't or does treat his fans! And I loved Kit and Lainey for various reasons and actually well all of the characters .
All had their upsides to them, well apart from some of the people Majella tries dating!
I loved every moment of this, including the couple of family secrets, the way Lainey is with everyone especially when helping Seth out on a couple of key occasions.
A truly enjoyable story that only upset me because I reached the end and would have happily kept on reading for a lot longer. Means I'll probably ave to wait another year for the next book from one of my all time favourite authors, which is just far too long, but great stories do take time to write, so I'm happy to try to be patient!!

Mais um romance absolutamente adorável de Jill Mansell.
Sinceramente, não sei como não tinha lido mais livros dela no passado. Tenho vários para ler, é o que me vale. Este foi apenas o segundo livro que li dela. Não sei porque mas sempre tive a noção de que os livros dela seriam monótonos. Não podia estar mais enganada.
Neste temos várias histórias que se juntam numa família só. Temos Seth e Lainey, que, sem saberem, já se tinham conhecido antes, temos Majella que, tendo perdido o amor da sua vida, o pai de Seth, tenta reencontrar o amor e aí passa por várias situações caricatas, temos o adorável Kit, melhor amigo de Lainey, Wyatt que, numa tentativa de esconder quem era embarca num pedido de casamento colossal mas que acaba em desgosto e temos, o maravilhoso patriarca da família Sir Richard Miles, famoso e excêntrico actor de Hollywood, sogro de Majella e avô de Seth.
Todos eles, à sua maneira, conseguem dar vida a este livro e a tudo o que vamos lendo. Aprendemos a gostar das excentricidades de cada um deles e soltar umas quantas gargalhadas é garantido.
Adorei a forma como a autora cria personagens tão naturais e reais. Reais no sentido de que tudo o que lhes acontece poderia muito bem acontecer a qualquer um de nós. A forma com agem naturalmente e de acordo com as "regras" da vida real e a forma como pensam e encaram as coisas boas e as coisas más com as quais qualquer um de nós poderia enfrentar.
Adorei a Lainey e o Seth. Sabia que não haveria como separar duas pessoas tão boas de coração e tão terra a terra como eles dois. Também adorei o Kit e a sua admirável fidelidade à melhor amiga, nem que isso significasse colocar a sua própria vida em pausa.

Did Not Finish at 45 percent.
Sorry, I was just not enjoying this. The whole premise was so flimsy and aggravating and then I started to really dislike the character of Lainey. Having someone judge everyone around her and show sympathy to a woman stalking another person was just about it for me. I also think this had way too many characters and storylines that I just could not get into it. If Mansell had kept the focus on just Lainey and Kit and their points of view it maybe could have worked. But jumping from them, to Seth, to Majella, and I think we got one of the twins, and a filthy rich man I just finally put this out of my head.
"It Started with a Secret" follows Lainey and Kit, two best friends who lose their job after a wonderful little chateau they were working at closes after a series of upkeep issues and then mass cancellation of reservations. The two friends are looking for work, and then Lainey spies an advertisement for a couple to take on the upkeep, cooking, organizing of a family that lives in Cornwall. The only problem is that Lainey and Kit are not a couple, and then soon find themselves hiding that fact so they can go and work for Majella and her family (father-in law, step-son, twin daughters, and a son with a bunch of animals to boot).
Of course things get complicated when Seth starts to think about Lainey, and Lainey realizes that she may end up costing her and Kit the job if anyone finds out what is really going on. I honestly did think that Lainey was giving out Mary Sueish vibes and I just wasn't in the mood to continue the book after I got to the 45 percent point.

Just as good the second time around.
4.5 stars! I loved it so much that I'm going to start over and read it all over again!
Jill Mansell has written another romantic, funny, heartwarming, and very satisfying story. Yes, it's a grown-up fairy tale but that's why I love reading her books. As an added bonus, there are some cameos from another of my favorite Mansell stories, "The Unexpected Consequences of Love".

Amiable fluff if you can tolerate romantic feel-goods, which I can (just barely) now and then. It takes place in Cornwall (don't they all?) which is a little plus because I too love Cornwall. Not recommended for readers who have trouble with their teeth - the sugar content of this book is near-lethal.

Jill Mansell is an author whose books I always look forward to picking up, and whilst You and Me, Always will forever be my favourite, It Started With A Secret is now closely sat behind it.
At a chateau in France, It Started With A Secretbegins with a proposal that quickly turns into a colossal disaster – not just for the poor guy jilted – but also for staff member Lainey, who ends up jobless, homeless and single rather quickly.
Along with fellow co-worker and good friend Kit, they quickly start searching for new jobs when Lainey spots an advert for a couple to help run a chaotic home in the beautiful seaside town of St Carys in Cornwall. Perfect. If only they were a couple…
…and so begins the first (of many) little secrets in It Started With A Secret.
As soon as I met the Myles family I knew I was in for a bundle of fun and entertaining antics – a family that I can best describe as chaotic, eccentric, colourful and so so hearty – I just loved them straight away. Lainey and Kit soon settle into their tasks of organising (and keeping in check) the lives of Hollywood legend, Richard and his family, grandchildren and dogs. Although Seth (Richard’s grandson) soon becomes a little bit of a distraction to Lainey – if only she’d not told that slight little fib!
Before beginning It Started With A Secret I thought the plot would mostly be centred around Lainey. Instead, Mansell has filled this story to the absolute brim with so many little threads surrounding this mix-matched family – from Sir Richard’s past escapades and his fan club members on-going antics to the wonderful Majella and her dating journey (mostly of disasters, yet a favourite storyline of mine!) and of course this cat and mouse game of Lainey and Kit not being caught out (I secretly hoped they would be for the romance to develop with Seth) – and masterfully linking them all together. In these stories’ there’s something for everyone to enjoy, be it romance, humour or soul-searching, and did I mention the secrets? There are secrets GALORE to discover and keep you intrigued throughout – most certainly living up to it’s title.
Did I mention Seth? What a heart he has! I can’t say too much as I don’t want to spoil the plot, but he was certainly a well thought out, most surprising character and I loved the idea behind the holidays of his – in fact I think there’s a book waiting to be written around that as I could of read so much more.

Jill Mansell’s wonderful new comedy of errors
When you read a Jill Mansell novel you know you’re in a pair of safe hands. Overflowing with charming characters, interesting plot threads and great locations, with more than a sprinkle of romance, wit and comic relief, Mansell’s books are tightly written and wonderfully realised. Her latest work, It Started with a Secret, thankfully, builds on all this.
As the story opens, protagonist Lainey has, what seems to be, a dream job in a working chateau in France. When disaster strikes, Lainey and her fellow workmates are left without jobs. Returning to England, she applies to a ‘couple wanted’ ad, running a family house in St Carys, in coastal Cornwall. But while Lainey loves Kit, the man posing as her boyfriend, they’re not romantically involved, and what begins as a fairly innocent white lie takes on a veritable life of its own.
The family is headed by acting legend Sir Richard, a charismatic bon vivant, who owns the beautiful, rambling house by the sea, which he shares with his vibrant, messy family, including widowed daughter-in-law Majella and his various grandchildren, from handsome thirty-something Seth to youngest child Henry. Lainey and Kit immediately fit in, and, as Lainey in particular becomes more intertwined with their lives, her sunniness and general goodness help each of them open up, allowing them to deal with their issues and secrets from the past.
Mansell creates a quintessentially English comedy of errors in which the attractive, somewhat eccentric characters move in and out of each other’s lives, causing mayhem in often quite hilarious ways. There’s enough ‘real-life’ tension to muddy the waters and sustain our interest, allowing the characters to be more than just entertaining ciphers.
At times poignant and surprisingly tender, It Started with a Secret is a satisfyingly good read, a pick me up in every sense. We defy anyone not to feel uplifted by it. Lovely. Just lovely.

“Tutto cominciò con un segreto” è un testo di narrativa rosa che mi ha ricordato un sacco lo stile di uno di quei film da vedere in un pomeriggio estivo. Ambientato in un piccolo paesino della Cornovaglia, è un contemporary fresco, dalla trama abbastanza semplice, ma non per questo banale:vengono narrate le vicende di tanti protagonisti, con età e caratteri estremamente diversi, ma che si legano in una piacevole trama di vita quotidiana.
Lo stile è molto accurato nella sua semplicità, i personaggi sono davvero ben delineati e ci si affeziona fin da subito ad ognuno. La protagonista è Lainey, una giovane donna che ha perso tutto e con una piccola bugia riesce ad ottenere insieme all’amico Kit un lavoro da governante presso una grande e bizzarra famiglia, portando un po’ di armonia nelle loro vite. Ho apprezzato questa lettura dalla vena di commedia, mi ha lasciato con il sorriso sulle labbra grazie a quel pizzico di romanticismo, all’importanza data ai valori e alla bontà d’animo, al tema del volere rimettersi in gioco ecc. Ammetto che mi aspettavo che mi prendesse leggermente di più, sarà che sono diventata un po’ più severa con i voti e l’ho letto in un momento di quasi blocco del lettore, ma il titolo è approvato
“Tutto cominciò con un segreto” è un testo di narrativa rosa che mi ha ricordato un sacco lo stile di uno di quei film da vedere in un pomeriggio estivo. Ambientato in un piccolo paesino della Cornovaglia, è un contemporary fresco, dalla trama abbastanza semplice, ma non per questo banale:vengono narrate le vicende di tanti protagonisti, con età e caratteri estremamente diversi, ma che si legano in una piacevole trama di vita quotidiana.
Lo stile è molto accurato nella sua semplicità, i personaggi sono davvero ben delineati e ci si affeziona fin da subito ad ognuno. La protagonista è Lainey, una giovane donna che ha perso tutto e con una piccola bugia riesce ad ottenere insieme all’amico Kit un lavoro da governante presso una grande e bizzarra famiglia, portando un po’ di armonia nelle loro vite. Heerlijk duurt het langst heb ik met een groep Jill Mansell-newbies gelezen. Voor ons allemaal was het de eerste kennismaking met een boek van Jill Mansell en voor mij zeker niet de laatste!
Heerlijk duurt het langst gaat over Lainey die samen met haar beste vriend Kit een nieuwe baan zoekt en terecht komt bij een chaotisch gezin in Cornwall om hun daar te helpen. Ze is eigenlijk niet op zoek naar een nieuwe relatie, nadat haar vorige net stuk is gelopen, maar de stiefzoon van haar baas is wel heel aantrekkelijk. Naast dat hij de zoon van haar baas is, kan het ook niks worden omdat Lainey niet helemaal eerlijk is geweest. Maar Seth blijkt ook iets verborgen te houden.
Het was een fijne kennismaking met Jill Mansell, haar schrijfstijl is vlot en de chemie tussen Seth en Lainey is goed voelbaar. Er zitten veel personages in wat het soms een beetje verwarrend maakt, maar elk personage voegt wat toe aan het verhaal. Door de vele personages zijn ze niet allemaal even goed uitgewerkt, maar dat doet niks af aan het verhaal. Het is fijn om vanuit meerdere perspectieven te lezen, dit is een leuke afwisseling.
Jill Mansell behandelt meerdere belangrijke onderwerpen in dit boek, wat soms iets te groots gemaakt is en best wat subtieler had gekund. Maar het is goed dat het erin voor komt en het zorgt ook voor wat diepgang.

Priča je počela zanimljivo, ali to se brzo promijenilo. Cijela priča oko tajne od Lainey je meni osobno malo suluda i nerealna. Nakon toga uskoro mi nije bilo bitno što se likovima događa. Bilo je par dobrih dijelova, koji su spasili da ranije ne odustanem od knjige, ali nedovoljno da se prisilim dovršiti knjigu.
Mnogi knjigu vole jer je simpatična i šarmatna i shvaćam ih potpuno. Mislim da je ovdje ipak problem jako subjektivan. Zato slobodno dajte šansu knjizi, ali nažalost meni nije bilo dobro.

You can never go far wrong with a Jill Mansell book. A lovely, heart warming story of love, self discovery and family drama. Defiantly a recommendation for fans of chic lit.

Honestly, she is a breath of fresh air, I cannot recommend her highly enough as a writer of sharply observed, well written characters set in the modern world, yet with an old fashioned charm (I mean that in the most complimentary way possible!).
Her humour is witty and observational,which juxtaposes perfectly with the heartbreaking scene that opens 'It Started With A Secret', and it is absolutely impossible not to fall in love with her characters, especially Kit and Lainey who, having being let go from their job managing a French chateau, are hired to take care of Majella and her unruly brood.
Twins Violet and India, step-son Seth and patriarch, Richard, are all swfitly drawn and their quirks fully displayed from the time we meet them, at Kit and Lainey's interview, and from there on in plays a game of cat and mouse as they try to hide the fact that they aren't a real couple.
How long will it be before they are found out, and whose hearts will be broken?
An absolutely smashing love story with twists, gasps and laughs for the most discerning reader, Jill has once again shown just how a writer at the top of their craft can continue to produce the most engaging fiction, without ever serving her readers anything less than a first class read.
What an absolute treat it was to read, it has blown away the January blues like nothing else!
