From USA Today Bestselling Author comes a spinoff from The Unbound Trilogy. Although this book can be read as a standalone, I do encourage you to read the Trilogy to get to know the family of brothers better. Abrupt Synopsis. Have you ever wondered if regret will imprison you, or does it set us free as the truth does? Regret was the one thing I had. It owned my charred black soul. That emotion was digging so deep into my bones like a deadly disease. I hid it well. Let people believe I was a kind man. I’m far from one. I’m brash, bold, and angry at the curveball life has thrown at me. My saving grace came in the form of a tiny bundle wrapped in pink. My daughter. The day I learned I’d raise her on my own, was the day I kept the only vow I didn’t intend to break. I wasn’t letting a woman in my bed or my heart. There wasn’t room for one with my daughter owning one half and a woman I let slip through my fingers holding onto the other without her knowing it. I kept that vow until now. She’s back. The one that owns the other half of my heart. She’s carrying more pain than she left with, I can see it in her eyes. I should never have let her go, and now my regret is here, facing me head-on. I made a mistake, one I plan to rectify. I am a Mitchell, after all. I’ll stop at nothing to get what I want. Her. I have to prove to her that there will be no more broken promises, show her that my heart, the half I gave to her so long ago, is still hers.

I am not a good reader for second chance romance books, especially when the hero doesn't deserve to be forgiven such as in this case.
This review I read all this information from disappeared suddenly but this is more or less what I read and of course I decided to avoid the book.
If you have read the book and if you see that there are mistakes in my short summary, please warn me :)["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
Barf, he has sex for money in a sex club, she caught him in a threesome, one riding him and the other on his face. On top of that he made a baby with another woman and that is what inspired him to change, not the girl he fell in love with, of course not where would the romance be in that? 🙄 he was still willing to whore himself out WHILE he was also having sex with her, jfc
I dont know if it's just me but I hate reading about a hero going down on other women. Like it's fine if you can just assume he has done it but to have to read about it in a scene with an OW or know 100% just grosses me out whenever he kisses the heroine afterwards. It's an intimate act that should only be descriptively written to happen between hero and heroine, we dont want to know what other legs his head has been between plz....perhaps that is just me. It just is something I have a hard time getting past...as well as when he has a baby with OW so this book is just a big NOPE!
Horrible. There is nothing to enjoy when reading this book. Weak heroine and a weak piece of crap male lead (I refuse to call him a hero) he cheated on the heroine who was his first “love” in a huge way. She caught him in a threesome with two women, one of whom was “riding his face”. Apparently this was a regular thing for him while they were together and sexually involved. He never expresses remorse or begs for her back. He moved right along without her, having a child with someone until his daughter changed him... She got married to someone else that her father knew. She found out she was pregnant with the male leads baby and was threatened (with him killing her child) into not telling the male lead about being the father. Back in the present the son has been missing for 6 months, he is with the deranged psychopath that is the ex. The male lead is of course angry at the heroine at for not telling him... Note again that he CHEATED on the love of his life who knows how many times and exposing her to who knows how many diseases, because he wasn’t practicing safe sex. He never chased after of tried to win her back, or questioned a baby being born that soon (their families were still close, he was at the wedding etc). He just moved right along sticking his di$& in everything that moves. She was not for one second enough to make him stop what he was doing. Despite how the summery premise reads, he never appears “overwhelmed with regret” He sees her for the first time in years and immediately expects her to fall back to being with him, while he just wants to “leave the past in the past”. He never explains why he did it, or feels the appropriate amount of guilt, even in his inner monologue. He doesn’t even ask for forgiveness at all. He just pushes the blame onto her ex. And then the author throws in more scenes of him being super dad to the kid one person in the book, that he actually seems to guinuinely care about. It’s in black and white that he doesn’t regret his behavior, he regrets that she found out. There is even a line about him throwing himself even farther into the “lifestyle that he enjoyed” after she was gone. Ok, the lifestyle he enjoyed. Doesn’t sound like regret to me. That isn’t love, that’s narcissism. He isn’t strong or an “alpha” at all. He was a piece of crap who was too weak to stop screwing other women, or fight to get her back. But less than two years later he was suddenly capable of massive change for his daughter? Only 2 years... Doesn’t that make it glaringly obvious that the problem was that he didn’t actually love the heroine? And if the author thought making him a devoted father helps to endear him to the reader, it’s a complete fail. Because there is another child involved in this book as well. While his daughter was being spoiled rotten, his son was going through hell (again all stemming from what the male lead put the heroine through). But we are supposed to forget that he has ruined his sons life, because he’s such a nice guy and turned into a great dad for HER? Books like this are why I can tolerate bully romances so well. Give me me an a$$hole who admits he is an a$$hole over douchebags (who everyone thinks are great guys) that cheat and treat their heroine like crap while claiming to love her, any day! Sorry for that embarrassment of a run on sentence, but I just couldn’t think of another way to say this! He ruined her life while moving on with his perfectly fine and having a child with someone else. She was repeatedly raped and abused for 10 YEARS and had their son was kidnapped and put through hell! Because for lack of a way to put it, the male lead is a pu$&y. Even as far as “cheating” books go, this one is too much. The author lost any chance of this book working by having him only become better when he has a kid with some random, while his son and the heroine spend years going through hell. She would have been much better off if he had gotten it together because he lost the heroine, and the daughter just didn’t exist. As is? He is unredeemable.
Wanted to note that I bought this and then started reading reviews when I realized that there were no misunderstandings, and he is just that awful. I decided to keep reading in the interest of leaving a fair review.
Heroes: By definition should be fine upstanding characters, worthy of the term 〰️Must be self-respecting and loyal to the heroine 〰️No derision or criticism 〰️No flaunting OW 〰️Unconditional respect 〰️He does not have sex with OW whilst the h is in his life (only eunuchs need apply) 〰️No descriptive sex scenes with anyone but the heroine 〰️No unplanned pregnancies with OW 〰️No overt favouritism of children 〰️No second-best heroines 〰️No tortured heroes with Mummy, Daddy, sibling or ex-issues
Heroines: No simpering, spineless doormats need apply 〰️No victims 〰️Only strong, confident women need apply 〰️No chaste virgins, or celibate females whilst male protagonist is NOT 〰️No forgiving H unworthy of forgiveness 〰️Must grovel and clearly demonstrate regret over a set period of time 〰️No instant forgiveness and all is forgotten 〰️Learn to hold a grudge, he will respect you for it - should he fall into old habits 〰️Must be assertive, strong-willed and self-respecting
No second or third chances, this is grounds for man bashing!
Update 03/10 - getting desperate so I finally read the whole cringey thing.
It's not that he doesn't express regret as one of the reviewers said, he does, it's just that it's really not well written! He's like a damn overwrought 13 year old girl and every woman has been 13 and knows exactly what I mean. Ugh, such a waste of a great premise. Shrug. KU, no harm no foul and no rating 'cause I love this trope.
Great read if you like...second chance romances, single fathers, suspense, and an HEA.
Personal Note: I realllyyyyy like this family, lol. Kathy has created a set of brothers that are irresistible. They fight hard for their love and love their women even harder. I enjoyed Logan, but this one was more amazing to me. There were so many emotions that were touched on and a lost love that never died, which is in an incredible thing. I won't giveaway any more details, just say I recommend reading this.
Been looking forward to this book since meeting Lane and his little girl in the Unbound Trilogy. Throw in characters from another much loved series by this author and my excitement has no bounds.
Reason for me reviewing at end rather than during is because like always when reading a Kathy book you are drawn in from page 1 and if you don't give it your full attention you'll miss all the little clues and tidbits. Only a few chapters in and already my head is whirring....
The pain and secrets these two have kept hidden for years is mind blowing. Will they be able to save each other and those they love as all of that comes to light and implodes around them?
Once the truth starts coming out, it doesn't stop, destroying so much in it's wake, now it's just a matter of what can be salvaged..
This book, like anything else by this author, is so brilliant that this review has basically written itself while you as the reader sit there gobsmacked with bombs exploding throughout the pages.
I won't say anything else as don't want to ruin the journey the plot and characters will take you on, but one click immediately. You won't regret it.
Wow, where do I start? Let me say that Abrupt will grabbed on to you from the first chapter and will not let you go until the last one. I was absolutely riveted to the story that Kathy Coopmans wove and could not put this one down.
Regrets, we all have them but it is how we choose to confront them when opportunity lands in front of us that makes this story addictive. For fear of accidentally writing spoilers, this will not be a long review as this is a book you need to experience for yourself.
Lane Mitchell is most definitely an alpha through an through. He and love that that he has with his daughter Lexi was heart warming, in fact she is so cute she almost stole the book right out from Lane and Sienna. Sienna, what a great character she is, she is determined, strong and someone I admire.
This was an emotional roller coaster of a read that had me smiling, laughing and crying. Although this is a genre that I do not often read Abrupt was entertaining and ticked the boxes for me.
Soul-Deep Heartache until the very end! A rollercoaster of emotions that you do not want to get off of! Kathy is one of my all time favorite authors and just when I don't think her writing can get any better, I hear her say "Hold My Beer"! This phrase from Abrupt I felt embed it's self in my bones! "The woman who taught me the meaning of deep, soul-penetrating, I'd die, kill, and never give you up kind of love." -Kathy Coompans. Lane and Sienna are one of those couples that their love is written in the stars and you know they are meant to be! The chemistry between the two is one that we all long for. Things have happened to lead them to where they are and where they are going to end up. Things noone should ever have to imagine, let alone go through. Can they heal? Can they overcome the utter he** that they are being drug through? Can they get their happy? I don't want to give away any spoilers. Go one-click Abrupt to find out! I promise you will not be disapointed!

Abrupt from the start this book had me hooked.. again by Kathy Coopmans, I should expect it by now with her books they are so raw and emotional and real. Once started I had to stay up to finish reading it , I just had to! It broke me and started me crying, with lane You will know the part when you come to it. So emotional this whole journey reading this story, at the end I swear I was holding my breath, like until the trigger is pulled on a gun then you release, I could feel the tension that was building up in me release. This books just makes you feel it all!! So hard trying to put in words about this book I hope I’ve given it a bit of justice in what I’ve written for this review, a bloody must read 5 stars 🌟 of course! Loved the epilogue and can’t wait for the next story..
5+ STARS FOR ABRUPT!! This is my FAVORITE BOOK by this phenomenal author. Lane and Sienna's story will take you on one heck of a ride with all the twists & turns in their story. The book has all the feels and will keep you glued to the pages. Kathy Coopmans is one of my 1-Click authors and I know you will love her too.
Holy emotions, I didn't just get all the feels, it was an explosion of feels.
Sienna and Lane had so many heartbreaking obstacles to overcome in this second chance romance, some of them completely heartbreaking, devastating, all the feels times 2. There were secrets to uncover, wounds to heal and forgiveness, of themselves and each other.
I really enjoyed this absolutely insane emotional ride. Sienna and Lane might have had a rough road but the chemistry and love these 2 had proved to be what it took to make the other whole.
DNF 30% I managed to trudge through 30% of this book with a lot of effort until I just couldn't anymore. The writing is so bad, that it made it very difficult for me to even hold my attention. It is written in first person pov, but is just so full of repetitive, rambling internal monologue, that is impossible to follow the dialogue in a conversation between two people. Let's say, there's a scene between two people: H/h for example, and they're supposed to be arguing or something, but in between their dialogue there are 7, 8 paragraphs, sometimes full pages of internal monologue just rambling on about the same thing over and over. Describing a memory, flashbacks, feelings, thoughts, or whatever it is the author is trying to convey, that I had to go back and re-read the last thing that was said so I could follow the conversation and make sense of anything. It was really frustrating. Also lots of misused and misspelled words, complete disregard for grammatical structure, and an obvious disdain for the proper use of punctuation signs. I'm no grammar police but even for me it was too distracting and annoying. As for the plot, quite frankly I was too distracted by the bad writing to even analyze it, or the characters. It's true though, what some other reviewers are saying about the H. He, along with his brothers is the owner of a sex club, and apparently he used to be part of the "entertainment" offered at said club. He was having a "double life" of sorts, because he was dating/having sex with the h, and at the same time he was *renting" himself out. 🤮 So, the h catches him with two women in one of the rooms at the club, and she decides to marry another guy out of spite. After that, the H fell deeper into the depravity of his secret (now not so secret) lifestyle. It isn't until a couple of years later that he impregnates another woman and has a baby girl, that he makes a promise to his daughter to never have a woman in his bed until she's grown and living on her own. That promise of course is kept for about 8 years, until the h comes back in his life. Then it doesn't count because of course, the h is the "love of his life". 🙄 So yeah, he changed for his daughter, but not for h. Also, the h was pregnant when she broke up with him but didn't find out until after she married the other guy. The OM turned out to be an abusive psycho that used the baby as leverage to keep her basically hostage for 10 years until he finally went off the rails and tried to kill her but only managed to kidnap the son. She then returns to her family, and tells the truth about the abuse she’s been subjected for the past ten years and also about who the real father of her son is. The H is pissed at first that h didn't tell him, but quickly forgives her because it's all his fault after all. I have to mention here that it was never clear if the h was more mad at him or felt guilty for keeping the secret. Either way she's your standard doormat who immediately forgets why she broke up with the guy in the first place and proceeds to apologize and blame herself for keeping the son from him. Oh and also, of course she immediately falls in love with his daughter upon meeting her. 🙄🙄🙄 So those are some of the reasons why I just couldn't even read past 30% of this book.
Miss Coopmans has left me speechless, AGAIN! This book has all the feels, and then some. Amazing, truly amazing. I highly recommend this, and anything/everything else by this Author. Every book seems to be better than the last, somehow.
First of all there was way too many unnecessary pages. They would say one sentence then be inside their head or describing something or other for way too long before there was a response. I skimmed to where there was actual words between characters.
Then to top it all off, I still don’t know what really happened or why it even happened when they were younger. I mean he cheated on her but there was no explanation or even an attempt at one. Then it was like they kept mentioning it but never actually resolved anything. I feel like he did her wrong and never even groveled it was so easily glossed over after a certain point because of the other issues going on. It just aggravated me.
I didn’t feel any type of connection between the MC’s. They were just off.

A regretful action of youth brings on the consequences of a lifetime.
No one can imagine the heightened sense of anticipation that I had going into this book. Ms Coopmans had stated she’d broken her own heart in writing this book, and TBH, I was so scared, and I’d put off reading this book until the last minute. Even in the current restricted environment, I’d hoarded paper towels to sob into in preparation for this moment and damn right too, she broke my heart in the Prologue!!! The emotions of hurt and loss were that strong, it’s almost as though Ms Coopmans reached up from the virtual pages of my device and tore my heart from my chest, ripping my tear ducts along with it.
It’s a story of a love that was forbidden, and hidden, and seared so deep into the souls of its’ victims, yes victims of birth and circumstance, as to leave a scar forever. And, it was all over and done when Kathy Coopmans brought me to the start of their story.
Regret/rɪˈɡrɛt/ verb 1.feel sad, repentant, or disappointed over. This is the life that Lane Mitchell had led since that one action that lead the love of his life to marry another man. I felt that soul deep regret emanate from the pages as he told of his debauched aimless life until the moment, he found out he was going to be a father to a baby girl. He made her such a beautiful promise of commitment to her as a father that I absolutely fell in love with the man, even as I hadn’t forgiven him for the action that had driven Sienna away. I loved his character as he described keeping the darkness of his life within the mafia away from the beautiful angelic life force that was his daughter.
Consequences/ˈkɒnsɪkw(ə)ns/ noun 1.a result or effect, typically one that is unwelcome or unpleasant. For the last 10 years, Sienna’s life has been one of dealing with the fallout of that decision to marry a within her father’s organisation. While Lane lived with the regret of his actions in driving Sienna away, her consequences I have no words for. All I can say is that Ms Coopmans has dealt with some pretty heavy subject matter in the best way that I know she does so well. Sienna is a woman on the edge, hanging onto sanity by a thread, but I absolutely admired the element of strength that was woven into her character. She had so much to survive for.
What I loved most about this book is the theme of unconditional love and family. Seriously, I was glued to this book, loving it, even as my heart was broken for the pain these characters were being put through by the gifted mind of Kathy Coopmans. What an epic love story this was, and I can see that it can’t have been an easy one to write, because oh holy hell, at times it wasn’t easy to read. There were times I just had to step away and breathe. That being said, I would absolutely hand on heart recommend this book to all and sundry. Hell’s teeth, do not miss out on this book, it’s one you have to read and experience. Unfortunately, 5 Stars in the highest that these ratings go! 💖
Sienna and Lane once had a secret, young love. He made promises that she never once thought he'd break. Until he did. Then she married another man and ever since, her life has been hell. Now her life is even more hellish as she waits for word of her son's appearance, of whether he's alive (she knows he is) or not. And then Lane has the nerve to insert himself back into her life spouting the same alpha possessive bs he spouted before, something about second chances and such, and Sienna's not about to have it. Nope. She wants one thing - her son. No Lane, no lies, no second chances. And she will get her son back from her disgusting sleazebag of a husband. Even if she has to go through her one and only love to get him. If only Lane would back off and quit trying to seduce her into believing his lies again. If only her heart and body didn't still crave him. If only she didn't still love him.
Wow, as second chances go, this one is quite a doozy. It's suspenseful and action-packed, and I was on the edge of my seat reading as Sienna and Lane got their second chance. I loved it. I will say that I was pretty pissed at Lane for most of this story, though. He was pretty douchey back in the day, and the way he demanded so much of Sienna when he knew damn well he didn't deserve a second chance, really, really irritated me. But everything else about this story I loved. Second chance love stories are one of my catnips, especially when they're done well like Abrupt is. I'm not sure which story is next in this world Kathy Coopmans has created, but I'm going to be downloading it as soon as it's released.
ARC via Love Affair With Fiction for an honest review.
Abrupt literally hooks you in right from the beginning of the story and doesn’t let go until the last page. The story is intense and exciting and the characters are larger than life. When you have a description of characters like this:- “They came out of the womb with debauchery already bleeding in their blood.” then you know it’s going to be good.
Sienna was a character I immediately felt so much empathy for but also admiration too. She was such a determined, strong woman and a lesser character would have buckled under the enormous strain and pressure. I found myself trying to imagine myself in Sienna’s place at various times and honestly the struggle was so real.
Lane Mitchell was all alpha with his protective manner and dedication to those he loves. The thing I found the most resonating with this character was his self-honesty and how he strived to learn from past mistakes. His adoration for his daughter, Lexi, was admirable as was his devotion to Sienna. Special mention must go to Miss Lexi Mae Mitchell, she was one adorable character who stole the stage light whenever she was in a scene.
The build up of drama around why Sienna was back with her father, I’m trying not to say too much here 😉, was incredible in its level of excitement and anticipation. The suspense had me on the edge of my seat and I honestly had no idea how things were going to work out. A fantastic piece of writing by this author. Then there was the supercharged, hotly intense intimacy. Those scenes you nearly needed a fan to cool you down.
A warning though- you will go on an emotional roller coaster ride where you travel through nearly every emotion possible and believe me you do feel them deeply too but it is worth it!

I clearly should have paid more attention. I snapped this up just because Kathy wrote it. I didn't read the blurb. I didn't realize whose story it was. Silly me!
I have been waiting (what seems like forever) to learn Lane's story. The Mitchell brothers come from quite an unusual background. Following along in Logan and Ellie's story, you meet the remaining tribe members. I was so ridiculously happy when I realized exactly who was starring in this novel.
The single dad with the heart of gold. The protector. The man with a much kore complicated history than we ever knew or thought. Lane Mitchell is everything a woman could want as long as your name is Sienna. Don't get me wrong, we all want him- we just won't stand a chance.
The ONE that got away... His true love. La Mia Vita.
It is a tragic situation that brings these lost loves back in each others orbit. The tragedy isn't over quickly either. It's a long drawn out pain- one that will require a lot of intense work to recover from.
The Abrupt reentry into Sienna's life is the only way Lane can get through to her.
The Abrupt departure from her norm has Sienna spinning like a top. Wound up to the point of breaking and then spun lose, Sienna is trying to survive this terrible situation. She can't fall apart and yet...One man simultaneously holds her together and allows her to fall apart.
It's a choice you know. Happiness. You can chose to be happy or merely exist. Bo one said it's easy; only that its a choice.
Abrupt has many familiar faces. I love getting caught up with old friends. I enjoy meeting new people. My biggest kick, though, is watching evil get what it deserves.
Just give me a minute *pats self down. Oh yeah, that's what I did with them! Before starting a Kathy Coopmans book, I wholeheartedly, without hesitation, hand over my heart, my ability to breathe and all other vital organs! This author said that she put her soul into this book and honestly, I believe she does that with every one of her books. She most definitely takes my heart and soul and then hands them back, admittedly abit battered and stitched up, at the end of each of her books. And I bloody love her for it!! With every virtual page turned, the emotions build and pour off the pages, burrowing under your skin, seeping into your bones and your very soul. What Sienna and Lane go through is heart breaking, it floats in the air like an invisible cloud, sucking all the air from around you as you read this book. Both battle with feelings of guilt, remorse, anger, what-ifs, it's enough to bury anybody but together they are strong. Will they be able to forgive themselves and each other before its too late? This book took everything from me and I mean everything! I have cried that much, I am dehydrated! Pass me the wine! I have said before and I will say again, who needs vital organs and the ability to breath whilst reading a Kathy Coopmans book? #oxygenisoverrated
Kathy has a way of drawing you into a book from the very beginning. I knew from the Unbound Trilogy I was going to enjoy Lane’s book. And this is a second chance romance, which is one of my favorite tropes.
Lane and Sienna were never supposed to be together let alone fall in love. But they did anyway. Until Lane makes a decision he will regret for years. He has loved Sienna all the time they were apart. He has his daughter and his brothers but that is all he needs. He hasn’t wanted to try to find love again because for him and his heart, it will only ever be Sienna. But he hurt her terribly and he would do anything for another chance to make it right.
Sienna moves back home because her husband has kidnapped her son and she needs help to find him before something horrible happens. She just has a secret that she hasn’t been able to tell Lane. Now he’s determined to win her back but all she can think about is getting her son back.
This book has all the dark and dangerous aspects Kathy has been giving us so well but it also has the intense heat and love she writes about that we all love. Lane and Sienna have a very treacherous road to travel but together they can weather any storm that approaches.
I’m loving this world Kathy has brought us and I can’t wait for more.
Sienna comes back to town due to losing a piece of her heart. But the way that she loses him will have you in tears. Have tissues you will need them. She is dealing with everything the best way that she can. But she has already gone through so much. I absolutely love her character. She is so well written. She is strong when you know she is breaking on the inside. She may be a mafia princess but she still breaks and hurts. There is only one person that can even begin to help her heal. Lane her first one, the one that was forbidden. Things happened between them and she is hiding quite the secret from him. Once Lane learns the truth come hell or high water he will do whatever is needed to get his future with Sienna and heal her. But things aren't that easy. I loved the intense mystery, the suspense, the not knowing. This was a page turning intense, mind blowing, heart wrenching storyline that I absolutely loved reading. Kathy blows me away with every book that she writes. Her characters are always well written, engaging, easily relatable and you can easily feel what they are feeling. I highly recommend this one.
When it comes to second-chance-romances where the original break-up was due to the hero cheating on the heroine, it’s vital that the author makes me care about the pair as a couple, as well as individuals, relatively quickly. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen for this book.
The characterization, dialogue, and writing style didn’t work for me. However, like a bad habit, I couldn’t put the book down. I was determined to find out where it led, so Iended up skimming the majority of it.
Abrupt will leave you breathless and wanting more when this story ends. Lane and Sienna had a love most people killed for. However they were forbidden to be together and after watching Sienna marry another Lane vowed never to love again let alone let anyone else in his life. When a bundle of joy is dropped into his lap things change for him. Don't get me wrong he is still a hard man, but he will do what he can to make sure his little is happy and healthy. What he never expected was Sienna to come back into his life. Now choices need to be made because something isn't right. Sienna didn't want to admit she needed her dad, but when she married she knew it was wrong but what else could she do. Now bad things have happened and she's going to move forward. However a stubborn man won't let her. Now these two have to fight not only themselves, but an outside force who is threatening everything they love. Let's not forget Sienna's family is dangerous and things are about to get crazy. Loved this author so much and her stories.
