Eighteen-year-old Makani Hughes is young, intelligent, beautiful, and living a very carefree life. So much so that she lets her carefree life get in the way of her studies, causing her to be expelled from school. Enter Reed a man sixteen years her senior. He promised to take care of her, but six years and two kids—who don’t belong to Makani—later, all those promises are gone out the window. Being bound to her company, Skintastic, and taking care of her stepchildren, Makani starts looking for ways to get out of her emotionally and verbally abusive relationship with Reed. Makani gets the chance and confidence to leave her relationship once she meets the dark and mysterious Gio Mancini. A former kingpin, Horace ‘Gio’ Mancini has gone from running the streets of New York to running legit businesses in California. Gio has been in an open marriage with his wife, Piper, for a decade, allowing him to quench his dark desires of women obeying his every command as he’s being called Master Gio. Entry into Gio’s lifestyle wasn’t for the easy, weak, or the vanilla, but from the first time he laid eyes on the very naïve Makani, he knew she had to be his.
I don't even know where to begin except that I love everything this author crafts. How good you ask? Let's just say it's 2 am and I just finished the book because I couldn't stop. Makani's story is beyond heartbreaking dealing with the ultimate fboy until Gio comes into the picture. Gio is everything, definitely book bae. What a cliffhanger! On to part II!
When I tell you I about put this book down so many freaking times. One thing I can’t stand to read about is a female that is to dang weak and just deals with anything 🤦🏾♀️ with that being said Makani made me want to shake her so many times🙄 I can’t stand Reed, Saylor needs to be trampled by a stampede of elephants and Blair just needs her butt whooped. I’m glad Makani had Aspen and Jennifer. I’m glad Makani met Gio also, he’s exactly what she needed. Not sure how it’s going to play out with Piper but babygirl straight lost her mind. Can’t wait to see what happens next. Even though my blood pressure almost shot up, this was a great read.
Lord idk if I can handle Miss J book they have me stressed out MaKani made my eye twitch and that crying . I don’t like reading weak FMC but I just couldn’t stop reading. Giovanni was interesting a good distraction for MaKani I’m ready for part 2
Absolutely hate series. Absolutely love this book and author. Wasn’t expecting it to be more than one part I would’ve waited. Great story and characters. Hopefully part 2 will be soon.
Bound by A Gangsta's Love by Ms. J offered a mix of drama and intrigue yet ultimately left me underwhelmed. The story had its share of engaging moments, but several key aspects prevented it from fully drawing me in.
One major drawback was the character development, especially with the protagonist, Makani. Her struggles with insecurity were portrayed in a way that came off as repetitive and frustrating, making it hard to connect with her on a personal level. Instead of evoking empathy, her experiences felt like an unending echo, sapping the story of emotional resonance. Furthermore, the relentless fat-shaming inflicted by her boyfriend, Reed, was not only uncomfortable but also contributed to an overall negative atmosphere throughout the narrative. Reed himself was a particularly problematic character; his actions—marked by incompetence and infidelity—stripped away any potential for sympathy. I found it puzzling to understand why Makani remained so attached to him despite his glaring flaws.
Moreover, the book introduces a large number of characters, making it difficult to keep track of everyone and their respective storylines. This overcrowding of characters detracts from the main plot and dilutes the impact of the central conflicts.
The book also intricately explores the tumultuous relationship between Gio and Piper, painting a vivid picture of their marriage as one marked by emotional distance and tension. Gio's yearning for a dominant lifestyle within the BDSM community serves as a key motif, yet there is a compelling contradiction at play: he fails to embody the confidence and decisiveness typically associated with a dominant figure in that realm. This dissonance fosters a profound sense of confusion and frustration between them, as both struggle to comprehend and satisfy each other’s deepest needs and desires.
This narrative style added another layer of difficulty. The writing leaned heavily on exposition rather than engaging the reader through vivid scenes and character interactions. Instead of allowing us to witness pivotal moments unfold, important plot developments were often merely explained. This approach made the story feel flat, significantly diminishing its ability to pull me in and foster a connection with the characters.
While there were elements of drama that hinted at potential excitement, they fell short of sustaining my interest. The backstabbing and interpersonal conflicts seemed forced, lacking the nuanced depth that could have made them compelling. My enthusiasm waned as I progressed through the book, and I was disinterested in continuing to part two. The story simply didn’t captivate me enough to ignite curiosity about what lay ahead.
Bound by A Gangsta's Love had the seeds of a compelling tale but was ultimately hampered by underdeveloped characters, shallow storytelling, and discomforting themes. While it might resonate with some readers, it did not meet my hopes for an engaging and enjoyable reading experience.
My heart is breaking into a million pieces for my girl Makani, it’s so much betrayal and heartbreak surrounding her i don’t know if she will be able to hold it together when the ish hit the fan… I pray that her sister and her bestie will hold her down… Gio has definitely come to the rescue but he’ll he has so much going on in his own life… I can’t wait for part two so I can see love conquers all
Gio, has given me life. I'm just going to say this book has you living through the characters. My goodness I hate Reed and Saylor!! First read by the author and i likie!!!
OH-M-GEE!!! This book had me from beginning to end! I want Makani to have her happily ever after so bad! I know more drama is to come though! I really hope Gio takes care of Reed! I can't stand him! And I need somebody to run Saylor over with a Mac truck... then back up over the body!
This book had me HOOKED!!! I cannot wait for the next installment!
This story is extremely slow, l was nearly half way through the book and the two main characters didn’t live in the same city nor state. Heck they hadn’t met yet. On top of all this Makani had me rolling my eyes until I got a dang headache. The girl was overly weak to the point of no return. Then there was just a bunch of fill in pages of nothing but constant repeating of the same stuff. Reed bashing and cheating on Makani, Piper wanting Gio to be monogamous and give her a baby... blah 😑 There was no real action and I’m not interested in part 2. Heck I didn’t even finish this mess. As an avid reader I’m starting to feel there’s just no good story telling happening anymore, if you’ve read one street-lit book you’ve read them all. 🙄
This is my first book by this author... I can definitely say that I like her writing style... This book captured my attention and just continued to draw me in... I was also in my feeling a lot because this book keep bringing different emotions out of me... In the beginning I was so angry.. Then by the end I was all happy and like that's right... Then in shock and mad again and in shock again... I just can't keep up with these emotions... Whew... It was a little slow to start off but quickly picked up pace... This is definitely a fast pace read and I love it... I could not stand Reed and the way that he treated Makani... He just thought that he could just keep talking down to her and keep running around having babies on her... He should be glad that he has a woman that is an amazing mother and takes care of home and wants to have her own business and make her own money and be something... But nope... He wants to be with these no good don't want nothing in life women while he treats his woman like crap... Well they always say you never know what you have until it is gone... And we can quickly see that he is about to lose the best thing that has ever happened to him... And it is making him go crazy... I just feel bad for his kids that have no good parents... I felt so bad for Makani and what she had to keep putting up with from Reed... Not only him but one of her friends wasn't no better... Her self esteem just kept taking punches and she would just roll with it... but what Reed asked her to do... little did he know would cause a chain of effect to make her a stronger woman... I was so glad to see her get her self esteem back and start standing up for herself... I always say one man's trash is another man's treasure... Because Makani is definitely a diamond in the rough... But just as quickly as Makani finds happiness... Here comes Reed with his crap... Now he doing things like this because he is not able to control thing like he use to... I absolutely love Gio... He is so smooth and he is a really good man... Had me wanting a Gio in my life...I was so glad to see the way that things were playing out... Then to find out that he broke his own rule... This let me know that Makani was really special to him... I just want them to be a couple... They definitely deserve eachother... but he has yet to tell her about his wife... What will happen when she finds out that little bit of information... Oh wow... I can't believe that Reed went this far because he has lost control... But it looks like he may have just made the biggest mistake of his life... now I have to check out part 2 to see how this all plays out... This author definitely has a new fan...
Wow, I would be pissed about the ending but it's a part 2😁
Queen Miss J! This book right here had he hot the whole book, like I've never cursed a main female character out the way I cursed out Makani. Makani took being nieve to a whole new level, like us being nieve was a person🙄😒😔. Like how many ways do a ninja need to spell out he gives zero F**KS about you, your well being, your health, your mental or emotional health🤔. That efftard really thought he was God's gift to women when he was just a weak ass, nothing ass, f'boy who used his money to manipulate young easily impressed girls. He knew no real WOMAN would put up with him, his ish or his trifling f'boy ways, PERIOD😒. He wasn't worth the egg or spam that got together to produce him. His mammy should've swallowed🤷🏽 That bih Blair was a piece of ish just like her sorry excuse for a baby daddy. You wanna keep a kid to keep a ninja who us for everybody. You got hoes like her who are blessed with babies and don't even deserve the blessing. Then you have women who want the blessing, deserve to be a mom and can't😔. That bih Blair and Reed need some real karma. Saylor wasn't worth the nut and egg that got together to produced her either. With friends like her who needs enemies. I knew from that first text she sent through their group chat that she was f**king Reed nothing ass. Ol grimy🍆hopping hoe. Bih like her grinds my gears cause its like bih you can have any ninja you want, but you choose to go after Makani sloppy seconds cause that's what they are. Jealousy is a sickness and I hope she gets what's coming to her😡. Piper, I knew the moment she met Sergio he would be trouble. He just gave me those vibes and sure enough he proved me right. She effed up and instead of owning it and allowing Gio to help she pretended like she was good. Master Gio met his match with Makani. She's so out of his league but so what he needs at the same time. They're what each other needs and they don't even realize it. Him losing his cool after she disappears and blocks him from get life is proof that its more than her being his "pet". Him showing up on her for step😳👀. Red was 98 hot and I was hear for that lil bih getting an extra dose off his own medicine and then some. Then got the gal to put his hands on her and trek her his pretty much gonna rape her if she doesn't give him any🙄😒😡.
While I am aware of Endiya Carter's romance books, I haven't had the opportunity to explore her other books written under her pen name, Miss J. After reading Bound By A Gangster's Love, I see that the subject matter between Endiya Carter and Miss J is totally different.
Bound By A Gangster's Love is a dark romance that is spicy and full of drama. I was hooked from the very first page. I don't typically like weak FMCs and the FMC, Makani, in Bound By A Gangster's Love is 100% one of the weakest I've ever read about...ever. However, it was clear that she'd undergo a serious change throughout the book and that is part of what kept me interested. I am excited to see how she grows as a character and I want to see how her relationship with the MMC, Gio, blossoms.
I definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes a bit of drama and can handle the content warnings. The book is triggering but I believe there will be a positive payoff in the end.

Man, first time reading this author and I wish I don't get disappointed because she will be my new binge reading... This was so good. Makani at first was truly getting on my nerves. I am positive that if I was in her shoes, I would probably be the same (who am I kidding...I know I would be the same) but nonetheless, reading about it sound so bad that yep, she was getting on my nerves. She truly needed to grow some balls and a backbone and truthfully get on with her life. Horace "Gio/Giovani" wow, what a man. A little bit cold, but still what a man. Strong, alpha, and all man, the only thing to ask is "where can I get a Gio Mancini"... Reed/Saylor/Piper/Blair, y'all deserved everything coming your way, and I hope it's a freight train ready to hi, because baby, y'all are so bad. Jen and Aspen, deuces to the both of you and glad Makani does have such positive vibes sent her way. Now before I go to finish the finale and a full review, I wanted to know what happened to the families of Makani? I am talking about parents? I know she mentioned them without mentioning Jen who is her sister whom later on we learned of, but whatever happened to her parents? So ok, let me go finish this wonderful read!!! Such a good job👏👏🙏🙏⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Miss. J, such a good job.
So let me start off by saying even though this author writes romance mostly she can definitely venture off into other genres. She wrote this with purpose and with her readers in mind. The flow was really well and I was definitely stayed interested. It wasn't forced and I didn't feel like I knew what would happen next. I loved how Jennifer and Aspen never made Makani feel bad about herself. They were true to their relationship they had with her. Now that stupid Saylor was a different story. She definitely no better than that Reed person. Now Makani should have been standing up for herself in her relationship with Reed and with Saylor. She noticed the changes in her body but instead of telling her the positive Reed just kept belittling her. Now Gio is definitely a man's man and I love that. He states what he wants and he goes after it no matter what. I loved how he was with Makani and the way he handled her like she was the only person he has ever wanted. Honestly I think that Piper didn't want that open marriage but was a but scared of what Gio would do. Yes she enjoyed what comes with it but deep down I feel like she only went along with it because Gio liked it. From that ending i can see part 2 being crazy!!!
Wow! This one left me speechless; like it was so good! Makani and Reed’s relationship was the worst. I don’t know how or why Makani put up with so much because I would never.. 🤬I just want to know when Reed will be dealt with?! Endiya always gets my blood pressure rising with her books! 🤣Gio was such a good distraction for Makani; I was so happy when those two met. I love Gio’s character, everything about him screams sex appeal and boss status. I’m not sure that I like that Gio is in an open marriage but something tells me Makani is about to turn Gio’s world out!! 😜I cannot wait for part II!! I am never left unsatisfied with this authors work and this one, even though it’s not purely romance, was everything! 🥰very good job! The book was on point with the drama, intimacy, and it definitely had me anxious to get to the ending.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
NO SPOILERS HERE: This was a STORYYY ok!!!! The plot is original. The characters are gritty. Yes it’s about love. But baby it’s about them hard choices when you’re in love. Ok so boom, our boy Gio is married already and into that Don life (🥵), but his wife Piper…not so much. So they have a special arrangement. Cue Makani’s entrance into his life. Makani is in a DEAD end situation with her first love & his baby mama (yeah I said it). She’s basically a live in maid and babysitter, until fate (her crappy bf) sends her on a trip to the West Coast. Chiillddd when Gio lays eyes on Makani that’s all she wrote! From there it’s a whirlwind of erotic sex, painful confessions, sudden epiphanies, and secrets revealed. Trust me when I say, this is a book you DONT want to miss out on.
I don't understand, will never understand the hurt and absolute pain of not loving yourself to the extent of allowing a man to hurt you. This image that's being shown to us of Makina is troubling. Makina is strong in one sense yet totally spineless in another. Reed isn't try to cleverly hide anything from her, couldn't be me!! If she opened her eyes and look it's all in her face. Gio, I'm afraid as good as he seems is gonna be another problem that she don't need before she figures out how to get out of this mess called Reed. And them kids and they parents, HONEY let them folks grow up and raise they own babies!! I'm ready for a new Makina in book two!!
Makani is a kind soul. She’s dealing with a lot of BS. Reed is a no good dog. He doesn’t care about nobody but himself. Makani was taking to much crap from him. I was like come on now Makani! But when she got to San Diego I started feeling proud of her. Ignoring calls and standing up for herself more. She needs to watch her back. Not everyone is truly your friend. Gio....Whew! He is just everything. Piper, poor Piper. That’s all I can say about her. Bout to get into part 2. Great job 👍🏾👍🏾
So where do I start! Not a five star read only because there was no disclosure of a cliffhanger, and there were a few minor editing errors. Other than that, the story of Gio and Piper, Gio and Makani, Makani and Reed, and finally Reed and Thot number one and two had me hooked from start to finish. And let's not forget about Dr. Ken and Sergio😯. Can't wait for part two!
It is unfortunate that Miss J fictional story is non-fictional because there are a lot of households that experience what Miss J has written. I rate it three stars because it's a typical story. Hopefully, book 2 offers a twist especially when Makoni finds out that Gio is married or how Gio handles the Mob. Reed should have a humbling experience and that so call best friend. Well, karma she get her. We shall read how Miss J sorts out all that mess.
I don’t know who kept me hyperventilating more—Gio & Reed or Piper with her craziness. All I know is the remedy is Gio canceling Reed and Piper finally finding herself. I don’t usually cheer for separation and divorce when I like both characters, but Gio belongs to Makani! Once all 4 of them get on the same page, I can find my lungs and breathe. Lol! Great job, Miss J!
This was my first time 📚reading Miss J, however I had read several of Endiya's books. This was an awesome change of pace. First Saylor, Reed and Blair are horrible👎😰 individual that deserve each other. Gio is bae😍 but I am curious to see how things unfold when Makani finds out about the wife. I am glad Makani gained a back home in the end and I hope she keeps that momentum. Great job 🔥Miss J, can't wait to start the next book.😍💗👌🙌👏💥🔥😘
It’s on and popping for book 2. I cannot wait to see the direction that Ms. J is planning on taking this book. I’m glad that Makani is finally standing up for herself. It is always hard reading through the process of the main character coming into their own. I wonder if Giovanni is going to want an open relationship with Makani. That would just be going out the world backwards if she settles for that.
I love the book couldn’t put it down but that damn Jennifer talk to fucking much in front of strangers none of my friends would do no weird shit like that in the doctors office saying names in a city we not from that part reminded me that it’s a novel book & that damn saylor is so fucking fake & miserable I’m happy reed is sick he losing makani & I love aspen she’s so supportive she’s a real friend
I enjoyed all the drama this book gave and Mr Giovanni wow must really be nice in that dimension. I actually like that Makina started getting bolder towards the end and hopefully she has sense even better in book two. I think I like how easy going the dialogue makes this book and also I would have loved to know more about her betrayal Bestie and his wife’s backstory. Anyways I enjoyed all the drama shamelessly and ship Gio and Makina Idc what y’all say.
This was a good story, but I could have done without all the sex. I ended up skipping all the sex chapters they were long and in my opinion unnecessary. I really don’t like stories where the characters start off in a relationship. We then have to read a whole book or more than half the book where they stay in relationships for very stupid reasons. This was a decent read though.
I feel a certain way about how Makani kind of lets herself be a doormat. It takes so much for her to even feel herself and I feel like she might have a core of steel if she actually decided to get a backbone. Also, Gio is confusing me with his hot and cold treatment. If it wasn’t for that scene between him and his assistant I wouldn’t even know how he truly feels because I wouldn’t have been able to guess it. Also, Reed is a low down dirty 🥷
The story was a mixture for me. Weak women aren't a good look, and it's difficult to read about one being mistreated by a doggie bag fool, and she allows him to continue to breathe and flourish like nothing happened. None of the male characters would have piqued my interest. Gio, nor Reed made me happy....🤔😶
This was a very interesting story. I've read lots of books that have had many crazy events and characters, this was no different except it took to you into the world of DOM Hmmph don't think I'll ever indulge but this was a very steamy escapade. Hoping to finish the story with a smile one my face .... Happy reading
