Cassandra served a birthday breakfast to her newly 11-year-old son, Jacob – pancakes with a Harry Potter lightning bolt made of icing and drawn on each one. She asked what he wanted for his birthday, already knowing she had arranged a trip to Universal Studios in Florida which would completely surprise him! But his answer stunned her. He wanted her to try the new Military Matchmaking Mission to find someone special to date! He said there was a cocktail hour that evening for her to go and mingle! Several of his friends’ single parents would be going. This was for Jacob, though. She wouldn’t find a date because his father was the only man she would ever love. It had been 5 years since he had died.
Hunter Kensington’s Aunt Debra had developed a bad allergy to bee-stings – and keeping a hive was her long-time hobby and joy. Now she was overdosing on her allergy medicine, refusing to get an epi-pen. But she wanted Hunter, a member of the Adirondack Bear Special Forces, to attend the Military Matchmaking Mission cocktail party that night, so agreed to get the epi-pen if he would attend. After he had lost his leg, he really hated socializing. As soon as humans saw it, they would ask very intrusive questions he didn’t want to talk about. As a shifter, the missing leg did not hamper his performing of his duties and he could easily remain active.
Cassandra really didn’t want to mingle, but Jacob asked her to do this, so she would try. Only one man was still standing alone near a corner, so she approached him. He was not responding to her greeting, then suddenly said hello. She gasped, “It spoke!” and then sputtered her drink down her chin. From there on, the conversation flowed a little better as she smeared the drink stain further in trying to wipe it up. He went to get her a non-alcohol drink and she noticed his limp. Being a pediatric nurse and a soldier’s wife, she knew he must have lost a leg but she wouldn’t ask him about it this time. But he was easy to talk to and the night ended too soon. He walked her to the car, but a handshake seemed too formal. So she warned him she was a hugger and he accepted the challenge. It felt so right to be held by a man in uniform again. But he wasn’t Richard and it shook her up as she drove home.
There was a picnic the following week. Aunt Debra made Hunter take her and Cassandra was there with Jacob as well. Jacob was thrilled and invited them to his birthday party. The next morning, Jacob sneaked out to the little island in the nearby lake so he could set up a surprise romantic dinner for his mom and Hunter. There would be clues to follow for them to find it. But as he arrived, he heard voices arguing about selling guns! Before he could get away, two men saw him and gave chase. He managed to run home as Hunter and Debra arrived, and in a panic, told his mom about the men and guns. Now a new adventure would begin!
This was a really great story with fantastic characters, lots of love, and plenty of humor. The story line moved along perfectly and the charming characters melted the reader’s heart over and over. The author also adds some suspense and another chance to love the hero in case the reader is hard-hearted and doesn’t already! Grab your copy and enjoy a well-written book and see if Cassandra and Hunter will change their minds about dating after all this!
‘Military Matchmate‘ is the fourth title in the ‘Special Bear Protection Collection‘, and Hunter is a character that we don’t often see in Shifter Romances, a shifter who has lost a limb during his military deployment. I can think of only two other stories with a shifter who has had a limb amputated, and I read a lot of Shifter Romances. It does put the character more in the ‘real human’ world though, for bad things can happen to anyone… even shifters.
I liked Cassandra and Hunter both individually and together. Each has known hardship, for different reasons, and each has come out on the other side, if not whole, at least doing as well as they can under the circumstances. Cassandra has her son to raise, her work as a nurse, and she gets through the days since her husband’s death. Neither has dated much recently and both are somewhat pushed into the meet and greet military get-together – with surprising results since they only went to make those they love happy. Hunter certainly didn’t expect to find his mate, and Cassandra never expected to feel the spark of attraction after her husband’s death ever again.
I adored Jacob, Cassandra’s son. He’s sweet and determined to get his mom dating again. If his reasons are a bit self-serving, they are also certainly understandable. But his matchmaking efforts may have paid off even as they have placed him and his family in dire danger.
‘Military Matchmate‘ is intriguing, dangerous, and definitely sizzling as Hunter and Cassandra discover the love and passion between them – even when there is danger all around them. I was easily caught up in their story and would recommend it. My only thing… is something small and not story related. Covers matter to me, they help me define characters – and while certainly hot, this male isn’t old enough to be the Hunter I met while reading his story, IMO. *shrugs* It’s a small thing, perhaps only to me but sometimes those details matter more than we think as we fall into new worlds.

When Cassandra's son insists she attend a Military Matchmaking Mission mixer she really has no choice. It was the only thing he asked for for his birthday and it wasn't like she had a good reason not to go. Her husband of ten years had been killed three months earlier and her son was missing having a man around and didn't want her to be lonely. What did she have to lose?
Hunter's aunt is the only family he has and though she was a little out there with some of her beliefs, he would do almost anything for her. Hunter is a bear shifter and part of an elite shifter military unit, even though he only has one leg. This loss of his leg seemed to bother others more than it did him, at least it seemed to make humans act concerned and ask questions he didn't want to answer. But if attending the MMM party for a few hours would make his aunt happy he would go.
Find out what happens when these two lonely people meet and fall for each other. Hunter had no idea how Cassandra will react to the sight of his missing limb, much less the fact that he is a bear shifter. Cassandra doesn't know how Hunter will view the tattoo she has honoring her dead husband, or her son. Almost before they have a chance to get acquainted, Jacob witnesses something he shouldn't have and suddenly he and his mother are in grave danger. Hunter comes to the rescue, but can he convince her that staying with him is not a hardship? In fact, it is a godsend? And will he be able to stop the people after Cassandra and Jacob before it is too late?

Hunter & Cassandra - their story has it all; action, drama, mystery, a bit of angst, family & a very hot & strong connection! A quick, short read that has great characters & a strong story!
The reality of any amputation is traumatic and this author covered all sides. Thank you for the experience. The characters compliment each other. Story is wonderful to follow.
When hunter goes to a speed dating night he didn’t expect to meet a human that caught his eye. He also didn’t expect to get entangled with smugglers on her property or a son that looks up to him. Good story.
Great story. This story had me drawn in from the start it was so sweet the way Jacob had arranged for his mum Cassandra to go to the military matchmaking party on his birthday as she'd been lonely since his dad had died & he wanted her to meet somebody & because she loved him she couldn't refuse his one request. She wasn't interested in dating so stayed away from where people were mingling & went over to the bar where a man named Hunter was looking uninterested about been there aswell, they started talking just having fun both ending the night having had a good time just being friendly. When they left they had both felt an attraction they'd not felt in a long time but knew they wouldn't see each other again until they both ended up being at the military family picnic where she'd come with Jacob & he'd come with his Aunt Debra & being together again felt good to them even Jacob had noticed how happy his mum was. Jacob had hatched a plan arranging a romantic date for his mum & Hunter on their private island at his house but when he went across the lake there were men with guns talking about selling them so he quickly got away but they had seen him. When he got back home Hunter & Debra were there for his party but he came running at them out of breath telling them what happened & Hunter told them all to get in his car straight away & took them to his house. What started out as a great day being that it was his birthday party & making his mum happy with Hunter was far from it what actually happened. They stayed at Hunters house but the next day Hunter took Cassandra back home to get some of their stuff to stay at his house but the men were there talking about getting rid of Jacob which made Hunter mad causing him to reveal himself knowing that Cassandra would see & he'd have to explain ti her who he was. There are surprises, danger, tears, fun, hot chemistry & love before any chance of a happy ever after which you can't help but smile at times reading this, I loved it.

Cassandra is a single mom who has been raising her 11 year old son Jacob alone, since her husband was killed in action five years before. She asks him what he wants for his birthday and he shocks her by saying he wants her to go to a cocktail hour for the Military Matchmaking Mission. She is not interested in dating or finding anyone because she thinks her husband was her one true love. She reluctantly agrees to go.
Hunter is a bear shifter that is in a special military squad, the Adirondack Bear Special Forces. He lost his leg overseas, but is still able to serve state side in this special unit. He is a very quiet, reserved person, but has been especially anti-social since he lost his leg. He is living with and caring for his Aunt Debra, which is a challenge of it’s own! Debra blackmails him into going to the Military Matchmaking Mission cocktail party that night. He absolutely doesn’t want to go, but does it for her.
Cassandra is uncomfortable at the cocktail party, but spots the only unattached male that is hiding in the corner. She thinks maybe she will be “safe” from other men’s advances if she hides out with him. You will laugh as Cassandra stumbles through carrying on a conversation with an non-verbal male! But the party ends and they both leave expecting to never see each other again. Alas, fate has other plans for them!! They meet at a military picnic and Jacob and Debra start conspiring to bring them together. Jacob invites them to his birthday party and Debra accepts! Hunter shows up with his aunt to find the birthday boy missing and Cassandra getting very worried. Finally Jacob comes rushing in with news that there are arm’s dealers hiding out with their gun stash on Cassandra and Jacob’s private island. He is sure they saw him and is very frightened. Hunter takes over and rushes them to safety. He contacts his CO and starts an investigation. As they are thrown into close contact for several weeks, Hunter and Cassandra fall in love but must work through personal issues. A great story that I couldn’t put down once I started reading it!
This will be a book that will stir up emotions for people that have loved and lost and or being left injured after war, with that said I loved the whole story about two people that have lost so much come together and try to make a go at life once again. Cassandra is a nurse and works hard to give her son Jacob a good life after his Military father died 5yrs ago and all Jacob wants is for his mum to start dating again because he wants a new dad that’s here with him now and so he guilts her into going to the Military match mate night. Hunter is in the military and is also a bear shifter as is all his team mates but after an incident he was left with only one leg and his life was changed forever but he can still do his job. With his meddling Aunt Debra she manages to con him into going to the Military matchmate night if she gets a epipen and they agree. There the two of them meet, Cassandra noticed a man standing by himself in the corner and goes over to chat with him but notices how hot he is and scary as well. They start chatting and laughing about how they each ended up here tonight. Standing there talking to this most beautiful woman Hunter has seen in a long time or had any feelings towards is amazing and he doesn’t want it to end and neither does his bear. Then they meet again at the military picnic and the sparks between them can be seen by Debra and Jacob and so they hatch a plan together. Jacob invites Debra and Hunter to his birthday party the next day, so in the morning he sets out to set up his surprise for Hunter and his mum and comes across some bad men with guns on there property and runs home to tell his mother. And that’s when all the trouble starts and they move in with Hunter and Debra for protection from the gun smugglers. I’ve given away to much better stop now or I’ll end up writing the whole book in this review.

This was a very enjoyable story to read. You have fantastic characters with a believable storyline and some adventure mixed in.
Cassandra lost her husband five years ago fighting in the Army. She has her son to remember him by. She does everything based on what is best for her son, but he wants her to date again. He wants a living breathing dad, not the memory of one. Her son browbeats her into going to a Military Matchmate to find someone to date. She sees all these people, some in uniform, some not, but there is one male who is off by himself in a corner. She goes up to him and starts talking. She enjoys herself with him, while her mouth runs away from her. They both agree they don't want to date, but they enjoy each other's company. Her son plans to set up a romantic picnic on their little island and he finds gun smugglers there. He runs, but they follow.
Hunter is in a special military unit comprised of shifters. He lost half of his leg a year ago and he isn't interested in dating but his Aunt made him go to the Military Matchmate. He hides in a corner until the most beautiful woman walks up to him. She starts chattering and he finds her adorable. When invited to her son's birthday party, he shows up early to find him panicking because he found gun smugglers on their small private island. When Cassandra asked her son Jacob at his birthday breakfast what he wanted he asked that she go to the Military Matchmate party. She knew she couldn't refuse him so she got ready and went. Hunter's aunt agreed to get an EpiPen to carry with her when she worked with her bees if he went to the Military Matchmate party for her. He agreed even if he had no plans to meet anyone but Cassandra surprised him by coming over to him and introducing herself. They had a connection even is they both said they didn't want to date. They ran into each other again at the picnic the party people threw and she meets his aunt and Hunter meets her son. Soon their family members are leaving them alone playing matchmakers themselves. However things take a turn for the worse when Jacob stumbles upon some bad men across the lake from their house and its up to Hunter and his people to keep them safe. What will Cassandra do when she learns his secret? Can they be a family? Will she give Hunter a chance with her heart?
This is a great story that will hook you from the first chapter. The chemistry between them is scorching hot. This is a well written and very entertaining story. I would recommend this book to any book lover.

Hunter's Aunt Debra forces him to go as well and the two end up spending an enjoyable evening together. They meet again at a picnic and Jacob invites them to his party. The day of his party, Jacob has planned a romantic dinner for Cassandra and Hunter only to have his plans ruined when he finds men with guns in his family's cabin on the island in the lake. Cassandra has a surprise for her son, Jacob, on his 11th birthday. She has a surprise trip to Universal Studios planned, but when she asks him what he wants for his birthday she gets the shock of her life. He tells her that he wants her to go to cocktail hour for the Military Matchmaking Mission that very evening. She agrees somewhat reluctantly as she's not looking for a new love interest. Hunter is a special ops bear shifter that was injured in combat causing him to lose a leg. He's tricked in to going to the same cocktail hour by his aunt that raised him. Cassandra & Hunter have a nice time talking to each other & they end up meeting again only to have Jacob & Hunter's aunt conspire to help them get together. Jacob is planning a surprise romantic evening on the little isle in their lake & overhears 2 men talking about guns. He rushes back home to tell them about it only to end up hiding out at Hunter's house, the only place he can keep them safe. Hunter's attraction to Cassandra grows by the day, and it's hard to fight fate.
This story is everything I expect from Jade. Great characters: sassy, strong independent women & HAF alpha males. Awesome world building. Lots of action, and enough steam you need to fan yourself.
Cassandra is a single parent as she was widowed 5 years ago when her husband was killed in the line of duty. The story starts where she asks her eleven year old son what he wants for his birthday and he responds by telling her he wants her to go to a military matchmaking event. There she meets Hunter and although there is an attraction there they dont intend taking thing further as she doesnt want to date - for her, her husband was it and he lost his leg a couple of years ago and is self concious about wearing a prosthetic leg. I am not going to give away any spoilers to the plot line but this book is of the usual high standard that I have come to expect from this author. Although it is a shifter romance it is different from the previous books of hers I have read as it is not reverse harem. There is heat, romance and excitement and I enjoyed it immensely. If enjoy shifter romances with insta love and a HEA this is a book for you!

I so enjoyed this book. Cassandra is doing the best she can as a single mum to her son, Jacob, after she lost her husband five years before. She is a really good mum but when he tells her that for his birthday he would like her to start dating again she really doesn't want to but for him she will put her reservations aside and go to the event that the matchmaking site is hosting even if she doesn't actually plan on meeting anyone there. Hunter goes along to the same event to appease his aunt, also intending to keep to himself. When the two meet they realise they went there with the same intentions and decide to keep each other company. I loved how they were together, it seemed to be so natural and flowed really smoothly. Only one day Jacob sees something he shouldn't which puts them all in danger. This is when Hunter realises just how much this woman and her son mean to him. The characters are wonderful and the story is intense, filled with danger, action and romance.

Cassandra is a single mom, from her late husband Richard die at war. Her son Jacob wanted Cassandra to go on a date at the Military Matchmacking Mission night. Standing on the sideline everyone was paired except on man who has handsome so she made her way over and started talking to him. Hunter was unlike anyone else she met and there was something different about him. After a turn of events Jacob and Cassandra were staying with Hunter and Debra. They found an easy enough routine until one day when Cassandra went against the odds and went to see Hunter at her house. She found him swimming and then they went inside. Not thinking of the danger that could be lurking. Hunter followed Cassandra to house and was leaving but came back into the house running and yelling to them to get in the woods. Cassandra couldn't sit still she needed to help Hunter. In the book with wonderful characters, action packed and steamy romance, everyone involved got the HEA.

Military Matchmate follows former soldier, and bear shifter, Hunter Kensington and pediatric nurse Cassandra Wyecraft, and her eleven year old son Jacob. When Jacob arranges for his mom to go on a military matchmaking party on his birthday, he hopes his mom will find someone new since his dad, and soldier, Richard died five years ago. Hunter goes to the military matchmaking event to please his aunt Debra, and though he doesn’t expect to meet anyone, he is pleased to meet Cassandra. When Jacob tries to set up a surprise romantic picnic date for his mom and Hunter, he finds himself overhearing a dangerous conversation which has them turning to Hunter and Debra for help, even moving in with the pair to keep her son safe. Will Cassandra open her heart again? Or will the fear of losing someone again keep her from trying?
It's just been Cassandra and her son Jacob for the last five years since her husband was killed in action. For his eleventh birthday Jacob wants his mom to go to the Military Matchmate get together and start to date again. There she meets Hunter who is a bear shifter that lost part of his leg in combat. I enjoyed the banter between Cassandra and Hunter and how their relationship developed. Even though they were drawn to each other it wasn't an instantaneous love. As their relationship was deepening, there was also one that added Jacob and Hunter's aunt, Debra, into the mix. Events occur that pull the four of them together even more and although Hunter and his bear are in protection mode, they all step up to the plate before they can get their HEA.
Who are Jacob, Richard, Cassandra, Hunter, and Debra? How do they all know or meat one another? What does Jacob tell Cassandra he wants her to do as his birthday present? Where is Jacob going that night? What does Hunter do for a living? What is Debra's hobby? What do we learn about her and that hobby? What does Jacob do the day of his birthday that he shouldn't have done? What are the consequences of that? Wow, talk about some serious suspense in this military romance!

I quite liked this book. My first book by this author (and I do love a shifter book), and it had quite a few different aspects to it. It started out sweet and fun, meeting Cassandra and her son Jacob, his birthday, and him wanting her to go to the Military Matchmaking Mission. She decides to go and meets Hunter, a hunky quiet military man, standing by himself (also pushed to go), and they hit it off, friends for now (though his bear really likes her). Then things move on to getting into the danger area when gun smugglers are using Cassandra’s island cabin as a gun storage and Jacob stumbles on it. Hunter moves everyone to his house to protect them, and now we have a mix of danger, of some sexiness, growing feelings, fear and love. You pretty much get it all! Definitely enjoyed it!
Hunter is bribed by his aunt to attend a Military Matchmate function. He is hiding in the corner. Cassandra's son wants her to go to the Military Matchmate function as his friend's mother is also attending. Her husband was killed in action several years before and her son wants a father now. His birthday wish was for her mother to attend this function. She goes and meets Hunter. Then something happens and her son is now in danger. Hunter and his military team get involved and Cassandra and her son stay at Hunter's house with Hunter and his aunt. I loved reading this story and can't wait to read the next one. Thank you. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC copy of the book.
Cassandra, a nurse and single mom, meets Hunter, a special forces bear shifter, at the Military Matchmate cocktail party her son asked her to go to. As the story progresses a friendship blooms, danger calls, and letting go of the past is more difficult than either of them anticipated. Jade Alters’ Military Matchmate is an exciting shifter romance read with lovable, quirky characters and a happy ending that comes after hard decisions.

Swiftly suspenseful and seductive Military Matchmate by Jade Alters is a quick miliatry romance read with a sexy, alpha Bear Shifter. Hunter and Cassandra both have baggage and demons to exercise, but as their story swiftly develops, so does their deeper feelings. After the danger, they find love, acceptance and a willingness to more forward together. Overall, a quick read with plenty going on to keep the reader fully engaged and invested in Hunter and Cassandra's HEA. I read an ARC of this book from Booksprout and voluntarily share my review.
