Damon Burton, decades-long search engine optimization ("SEO") expert that's been featured by Forbes, Entrepreneur, and countless other media outlets, is the voice of reason, pulling back the curtain and showing readers detailed steps to outrank their competition. Unphased by an increasingly noisy internet, Outrank takes no prisoners as it tackles the numerous myths and misconceptions about SEO and gives you a clear outline for increasing your visibility and profitability with search engines. Given the rapidly changing search engine algorithms, Outrank boldly predicts trends that will impact online visibility into the next 5-10 years, putting readers ahead of the curve. Although Outrank is a precise blueprint for increasing your online traffic, it also provides insights to make informed decisions about hiring and leveraging the right SEO company at the right time, should you prefer to hire an SEO expert instead of becoming one. SEO has become a staple of modern marketing, but many small business owners don’t quite understand how it works. So when SEO “experts” come calling, many of these owners will end up in deals where the “experts” are doing more harm than good.

Burton wrote this book for those small business owners. It’s a short read in simple language, breaking down exactly what SEO is, what SEO professionals work on, and how to spot a pro from an amateur. He also breaks down exactly what you should work on if you want to do your own SEO. He also shatters a few myths about SEO along the way.

As someone who just wants to learn more about SEO, I wasn’t necessarily the target audience, but it was very helpful to learn about Burton’s approach to optimizing a website. I liked his process of just putting value out there for free, and eventually that value will come back around in the form of links, traffic, and eventually revenue. If you focus on making your content as valuable as possible, make your website very easy to use, and follow basic optimization principles, you will be successful. You just have to keep at it.

I also like this approach because it squashes a lot of skepticism around SEO. Many people associate SEO with having to scroll past someone’s life story above a recipe, which feels scammy. They believe that SEO makes content worse - you’re writing for an algorithm, not for a human being. But Burton’s approach says, we are writing for humans first, and eventually the algorithm will see how much humans are loving our content, so then we’ll rank higher. That’s what I’ve come to believe about SEO - if you do it right, you’re just answering questions that lots of people are asking. If you answer the question really well, you’ll rank #1. I like that.

Great way to understand how to work with search engines

I really enjoyed this book. I have been involved with SEO on different levels over the years and this book would have been a great resource to have. It takes what many people think is just weird voodoo and breaks it down to actionable steps, resources, and plans. Damon even gives you what to look for if you don't want to do it yourself but don't want to feel like your going to get taken advantage of. I did know a lot already from the book, but picked up some things that I can improve on that probably cost me some clients. If you're interested in getting your website search engine exposure, either by doing it yourself or hiring a firm you will want to read this book.

This should be a must read (or required listen) for any business owner! I honestly feel like I'm more educated now than most of the SEO companies I've hired in the past. Damon provides the exact blueprint on what you need to know to succeed with SEO and outrank your competition on Google. You'll be able to tell which SEO companies are worth hiring if you don't want to put in the work yourself, or even just outsource specific tasks cause you'll know what actually needs to be done to get all the traffic to your site. I love Damon's honesty/integrity, you can really tell he just wants to help as many people as he can. Thanks Damon!
