This is book two of the Mason Walker Thriller series and after the events that happened in book one with his own daughter being taken by force and almost killed by someone he knew from his past, all in an effort to get him to do their dirty work. It has been a month since these events occurred and now his daughter Clara is off to Stanford to start her first year of college paid for by the government in recognition of what she was put through. Instead of using a self-drive car, in the year of 2028, or taking a train or plane, Mason convinces his daughter to take a week-long trip by road in his old truck.

Clara gets settled into her new life, but this leaves Mason realising that he doesn’t want to go back to his old insurance sales job and thinks about the offer his old friend and colleague during his Navy SEAL days, Luke, gave him. He realises he is totally alone in his home now, he has no one left to have to look after or be responsible for now Clara has left for college. His recent return to work that brought back all of his old skills and abilities, has made him realise how much he needs to be back with like-minded people, a team, his brothers!

He takes Luke up on this new job offer and is introduced to his new team called Onyx. They are Marshal the team leader, Raina the only female member of the team, Kyle the young computer tech, Case who can follow clues in any case, hence the nickname and Duke an ex-SEAL and the only one Mason gets a bad attitude from! Soon after he joins them, they get their first case and it’s a doozy! Someone has kidnapped three children of a family close to the President of the USA and wants certain conditions met before he will either release them or execute them. He will only allow the President and Raina, the negotiator, to call him Warrior.

His demands are unacceptable to the President and thus Onyx were called in. Case and Duke go to the home where the children were kidnapped from and Case finds a clue which Duke links to a local gang for hire. Following up on that clue gives these two members a bit of a confrontation with the gang and not much further information about the case. The other team members have to look into matters themselves and try to track the Warrior. Mason is sent out to Kansas where the last call was traced to. Clara wants to come with him. He has be training her on how to protect herself and going running most days, along with martial arts training and firearms practice. She seems to be taking to it like a duck to water and is using this as a coping mechanism for what happened to her.

After refusing to allow Clara to come with him on this official case, he leaves and takes a bullet train to his destination. His job is to check out that location, while the rest of the team are at their base trying to follow up more leads. If this man called Warrior is not stopped, then World War III could be started! The team have a tough job to be able to stop this man and get the children back safely. Clara shows her skills as one of her pastimes helps to identify a possible location. It seems she is more like her father than he wants her to become. A tough talk is going to be required!

Another cracking thriller of a read with serious threats against the country and family close to the President. A Warrior who may be more mad than sane, but obviously with someone else assisting him, possibly more than one. Onyx need to find who is behind the plot and this will lead to yet another surprise and not a welcome one. Lots of intrigue in the investigation and loads of red herrings leading the mind in a different direction. The team are made up of some very different individuals and Mason being the newcomer, needs to work hard to be seen as part of the team and not an outsider. You get to see Mason returning to what he was trained to do and improving in ways with his new job and with his daughter. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

I enjoyed this story. It moves at a quick pace but it works with the way it's set up. They are after a terrorist that has kidnapped relatives of the President's family in order to have their demands met. There are a few twists within the story and it held my attention the entire time. I was engaged and wanted to find out what was going to happen next and how things were going to be resolved. This could be read as a standalone though it is the second book in the series. We do follow the same main character, Mason and his daughter Clara, but this is a different mission and so it does stand by itself. It was easy to read for me so I will be checking out future books as well.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

This is the second book in the Mason Walker Series. You'll love this story of Navy Seal Mason teaching his daughter Clara how to defend herself. This book is fast-moving and action packed. Full of suspense and no shortage of drama. Once you start reading you'll find it hard to stop. The descriptions are so vivid they make you feel like you are there in person. I read an arc and voluntarily chose to review.

This is the 2nd book in the series and it doesn't disappoint. In this story, it is a few months after Mason saved his daughter and she is getting ready to go to school. During this time, Mason has been helping her to prepare to defend herself by teaching her boxing, shooting and running to increase her endurance. She has told him that he isn't happy in his current job and that he needs to get back to helping his country. Mason finally takes her advice and joins Onyx, a private contractor run by his friend Luke.

Once Mason accepted, he was assigned a mission almost immediately. After introduction to his team members, he was given an assignment and went home to get packed. Once he was ready to leave his home, he had a fight with his daughter who wanted to go along. He refused and told her to stay. He caught his train to Kansas and once he got in his vehicle there he went to a location that he was provided. As he searched for the individual, the warehouse that he went to had bombs and exploded. After the blast he discovered that his daughter had been in his car.

Back in Washington, the team received another call from the Warrior and believed that they were still in the dark. By luck, Mason's daughter was able to hear sounds in the background and with that information, they were able to determine where the Warrior was located.

To discover what the Warrior did to bring Onyx down on him, where his hideout was, and how things were resolved, then you need to read this book. You won't be disappointed.

Another hit from this series for which now I have high hopes and if it continues to be as same as this book, this series will definitely be the one I will remember for some time. The one thing I kind of got frustrated or annoyed is the part of Clara and her stubbornness. I hope her character gets developed in the coming books. And also I kind of expected better explanation and reactions after the Duke incident.

And unlike the first book, this book only has warrior to deal with even though, he said "WE" in the phone call, which I doubt will come back later in the series or it may just be slip of word.

Another good one

Really enjoy the Mason Walker Book series. This book is number two and did not disappoint the reader. Action, suspense and intrigue made for fast reading. Perhaps it is only this reader, but I felt the writing while excellent was also a little awkward. Perhaps other readers could comment on this. Recommended

A bit surprised

I don't think that a Seal would ever get surprised by a wood be bad guy like I read in this book! A bit Clumsy don't you think?I hope that the writing gets better.

I very much enjoyed the storyline and plot here. Still perplexed at some of the plot, but other than that an enjoyable read.

Warrior

Tried a second book by Howell and found the same issues. Too wordy. Too much unneeded information. Will not try anymore of his books

The Search - Oh. My. Gosh! What tripe; was this written by a junior high kid? The writing style is lacking. The author does not pull me into his world. His descriptions lack the visualization good storytelling provides. His characters are flat; no life, no personalities. The dialogues are unrealistic. Sadly, I volunteered for all four books of this series hoping to find a new author. Should have known when the books appeared on Booksprout Sunday with the due date four days later that I was asking for disappointment. 2*

The Warrior - Howell still has not convinced me to get interested in his world. I do appreciate he uses uppercase for God, but why not mom and dad? Even after two books, I still do not care for the writing style, the characters or their dialogues. Action scenes just remind me too much of Hollywood instead of the real deal. 2*

The Cleansing - Well, Howell is consistent and I am extremely sorry to have selected these four books but I enjoy reading action series like Modeen or Rex Dalton. Well, can't win them all. I got to about 75 percent before my eyes crossed and rolled back into my head and I started skimming. Still the same complaint, lack of storytelling skills. Juvenile, instead of experienced. 2*

The Dark Underground - Made it to Chapter 28 and then refused to read another word. This author's writing style is not for me, nor are his characters and his dialogues. 2*

ONE AWESOME EXPERIENCE!!!
Holy Crap! Talk about your world crumbling at your feet. This is one action packed, hard hitting, heart pounding, page turning thrill ride that holds your attention from start to finish. Brings all of your emotions into play with a whirlwind of events that blow you away. Filled with all the drama, uncertainty, danger and suspense that rock this bad boy through and through. Alex pack a punch with this raging storyline and explosive plot that brings this bad boy alive spectacularly. The characters are complex, believable and so realistic with depth and individualities it really brings this treasure together flawlessly. The scenes are so vividly detailed it gives the illusion you're right there in middle of ground zero with them. Remarkable job Alex, thanks for sharing this bad boy with us.

I received the ARC from Bad Boy Update. I really liked this!! Mason, an ex Navy SEAL is teaching his daughter Clara to defend herself in case her life is ever in danger....again. The last thing he expects is for her to be so good, and to end up sneaking her way into his latest mission! This is an action packed story with twists and turns and intrigue. It's a great read!

Contrary to another reviewer, I think this is an excellent author: exciting plots, characters to love, dialog believable, and almost perfect editing. Mason is a true hero and an amazing father of Clara. This book again carries the reader away on an exercise to save the daughter and the day, not to mention the President, the country, and the world. High stakes, indeed! Recommended.

I dived straight in to reading this book directly after finishing book 1. It’s only my second book that I’ve read from this author and I am loving his writing style and the world he is building along with the characters. It’s nice to see the depth of the characters and the plot. Heading to book 3 now.
