The last person private investigator Mika Chalmers expects to walk in her office is ex-boyfriend and NHL player, Eric Foresburg. He looks just like he did three years ago, tall, blond, and every inch a Viking.

This isn't a social call.

Eric has gotten himself into some hot water. A woman is going to publicly accuse Eric of rape and he needs Mika to prove his innocence. With pressure from her father - who happens to be the head coach of Eric's NHL team - and smarmy defense attorney, Ryan King, Mika has her work cut out for her. When feelings for Eric - feelings she buried a long time ago - start to resurface, her job of finding the truth no matter what gets increasingly difficult to do.

Despite the fact that Mika has connections with the police department - including the arrogant Detective Alex Beech - the answers aren't black and white. Evidence reveals that Eric and the victim were together, but it turns into a heated he-said, she-said. It doesn't help that Eric has been keeping things from Mika, things he should have disclosed before she agreed to take his case.

With the help of Beech, Mika must determine whether or not Eric is innocent before the court of public opinion finds him guilty and his entire life is ruined.

Full disclosure: I am an acquired taste. I'm a typical blonde Orange County suburbanite who says 'like' more than necessary, laughs loud and probably obnoxiously, and loves to dance in the rain. I'm a 23 year old college graduate with more than a few tricks up my sleeve, and I also happen to be a pretty big Ducks fan. Oh, and I'm a writer. Like, for real.

I liked this story about Mika and her problems feeling respected as a PI(Private investigator) in a male dominated world, but also her problems with the men in her life.

Mika’s ex boyfriend Eric suddenly calls her after three years to hire her. He is being accused of rape and he wants her to help him prove his innocence. He is a professional hockey player and her father is the coach of the team. He has a great reputation in the community and he is a great guy but suddenly Mika starts to doubt if she actually know him anymore. Could he have changed so much during the three years they haven’t seen each other? On top of that she also has problems with the police detective who gets put on the case. They usually work great together even though they often fight and nag at each other.
Detective Beech is being pressured from all sides to arrest Eric and find evidence against him but he also feels he has to protect Mika and warn her away from the case because he doesn’t want her to get hurt. But does Mika listen or is she to far into the case to stop now?

I think Mika really good at her job and maybe a little to good at it;)! Sometimes she throughs herself into dangerous situations without thinking. She seems a little ditzy when it comes to both Eric and Beech and the English cop she is dating. She doesn’t see the signs they send her and that really annoyed me. So I have really mixed feelings about her.

The book is very repetitive and I unfortunately solved the case very quickly. But the story was sweet and I definitely know who I want her to end up with in this series;)!

I can recommend this book if you are in the mood for a mystery with a smart but a little ditzy heroine and all of the good-looking men in her life!

Great new mystery series

Good start to a new mystery series about PI Mika Chalmers who is hired by her ex- a pro hockey player - when he is accused of rape. Based on the cover I was expecting more of a cosy crime/humor vibe but the story was had more depth than I was expecting. Not overly deep, just more serious and I got very involved in Mika's dealing with her unresolved feelings about Eric (her ex) who dumped her out of the blue when she thought they were 'forever', conflicted feelings about the accusation and more conflicted feelings about not quite friend that she works with often police detective Alex Beech. Mika is likeable and relatable. She is good at her job but realistically so, not in an annoying or unbelievable way with super special skills. Both Alex & Eric clearly have an interest and while it looks like she might be giving a certain person a chance at the end I am hoping the other one is end game.

I really wanted to like this book, and for the most part, I did. Unfortunately, I just cannot get past all the the bad editing. Misspelled words, name mix-ups, and repeated words just get to me. This book could have been so much better if someone had edited it first instead of just publishing without a thorough read through. In the first couple of chapters, Alex and Eric are mixed up in a conversation making it harder to follow.

Another issue I had was with the timeline. It seemed like the timeline was kind of confused. Now, I'm not the biggest hockey fan, but I know enough to know when hockey season is. The way the book was written made it seem like hockey season was starting around May which is usually around when regular season ends.

It's a decent book, but it needs better editing to make it a great book, in my opinion.

“Ice Breakers“ marks the start in the “Mika Chalmers Hockey Mystery” by Heather C. Myers, an enjoyable and interesting lecture that blends character development and mystery in a way that reminds of any good mature aimed mystery movie series. Mika Chalmers (FMC) is a PI and daughter of the coach of the NHL Irving Buccaneers, a fact that plays a primordial role in all mysteries.

Mika relationship with her ex ended three years ago, but now he is back, in all his blond Viking glory, sadly this is whether rebound not social call. Eric Foresburg needs Mika’s help to clean his name, from a rape accusation. Mika is torn between having to deal with Eric (and her old feelings coming back) and wanting to find the truth, and with her own father, who happens to be Eric NHL Team coach pressuring her, she has not other choice but take the case. The truth however is difficult to find, even with her contacts in the police department (including ‘his royal arrogance pain in the behind’ Alex Beech and actual BF of sorts) cannot unearth solid facts, and the issue rapidly develops into a ‘he says/she says>’; Eric hiding details from her doesn’t really help the case either. Eric, Mika and Beech get entangled into a web of lies and suppositions, and if Mika doesn’t find the truth asap the court of public opinion will condemn Eric, nevertheless.

This a very good start into the series, fast-paced, interesting with unexpected turns and good plot twists that keep the reader guessing throughout the pages until the cliffhanger end, that let hope for much more to come. Strictly speaking the book would have profited of a better editorial work, but the story is enjoyable nevertheless, and as the editorial work is much more improved in the following books, the fact should not bother anyone.

The tension between Mika and her ‘men’ is palpable and credible, the resolution very satisfying. The struggle in conciliating her resurfacing feelings with the accusations, her wish to clean Eric’s reputation and revealing the truth at all cost, makes Mika’s character real, credible, and relatable. The – not really – love triangle between Eric, Mika, and Alex is very believable and a source of enjoyment through the story. A clear recommendation to any mystery fans, specially for those with an ice hockey fav.

Veronica Mars vibes

This book is a short cozy mystery that you will probably devour in a sitting. It’s very fast paced and the characters are interesting. The only problem is that it urgently, desperately needs an editor. The names are often switched and some scenes seem out of order.

I enjoyed this book quite a lot. I really loved Mika she is absolutely someone I want to know more about. The mystery is a bit cynical but it’s sad because it so true. People don’t really care about the truth they care about being PC or on the side of the majority. The characters were so fun to read, I especially enjoyed Mika and Beech’s interactions. Quick and totally immersive read definitely want to read more in this series!!.

Finished it in a day. Couldn’t put down. Was completely and utterly invested in this and was in total shock at the ending. Was not expecting this. Can’t wait to read the rest of the series.

A really cute read! Super quick and I would have finished it in one sitting if I hadn’t been so tired last night!

If you’re looking for a real cozy, blanket snuggling, read, this is it!

I had a little trouble deciding how I felt about the rape investigation aspect and about the ending...however I enjoyed the “Stephanie Plum”/“Veronica Mars” quality of the story and will definitely be reading the next in the series!

Some minor grammar/spelling errors, but not that take away from the story.

I loved Ice Breakers! The author is new to me & I am so excited to find her books. This read was entertaining & also kept me guessing (what I want in a mystery) I loved Mika- strong female but with a softer side as well.

Already bought the next book! If you like hockey & mysteries -check this book out

Mika is a private investigator who seems to be surrounded by complications. Her ex, a famous hockey player, broke up with her two years ago. Most would be able to walk away, but it’s harder when you live in the same area and your father is his coach. Throwing yourself into your PI work also brings you close to the police, in this case Detective Alex Beech who finds Mika both infuriating and amusing.
When we ex is accused of rape, Mika has to decide if she can distance herself to find the truth and wonder how much people can change.

A fun, fast read, and seems to be the good start of a new series. I will say it’s easy to guess where the plot is going and the bad guy, even with the last minute details. It could have used some additional editing as there are some errors and contradictions in several places. Still a fun read for those who like quick cozy adjacent mystery.

Good story.

I will start by saying that I liked the story and the characters. They were both intriguing and engaging. I wanted to give this book four stars, but a better job of proof reading needed to be done. There are places where words are missing. There are words that are missing letters. There were instances were typos made the wrong word. At one point, Eric and Alex are the same person. It really takes the reader out of the story. Mistakes happen, but this was fairly consistent through out the book. That being said, I look forward to reading more about these characters.

Holy Where-Was-The-Editor Batman!! This book would have gotten a higher score if editing in this book existed. I liked the characters a lot. I thought the writing was well done. The mystery was a bit predictable, but if I am enjoying the writing, I don't care about that as much.

This is my first time reading a novel so badly edited that it jarred me from the story. It was really frustrating because it had such great potential. I enjoyed the story/characters enough that I am going to read the next novel in hopes that the editing will be better.

Profanity: Yes, not a lot. A few f-bombs.
Sex: Talked about but not with detail

I liked the detective aspect of this story. Mika was a tough PI and had been for three years. The romance part of the story was faulty though. She seemed to have no backbone on this one. Depending on who was standing in front of her, she’d be all into him, until the next man was in the right location. I wanted to shake her and ask her to get an opinion and remember it in an hours time.

I enjoyed it but won’t be continuing on the series after reading the sample chapter for book 2. Characters need to be consistent between books for me.

What an intense mystery, jaw dropping, heart pounding, passionate and heartbreaking. Mike is the heroine a P.I. ,a daughter ,single and emotionally confused while trying to deal with past history, present warnings ,some infaited male egos and some very sick and evil individuals. There are such an array of vibrant characters that evoke so many emotions while drawing you further into it's mystery wanting you to unravel it's heartbreaking story. Acquire "Ice Breakers " today so you yourself can enjoy it as much as I have. Kat

This is a quick read and could have been more enjoyable were it not for the multiple typo errors and even name mix ups. Where are the editors???
I wanted to like Mika. After all she seems to be a pretty good PI. However, I just found her so fickle with the male species. On the one hand she says she's over her former relationship with Eric, but caves to his advances and comments. Then she goes on about Beech, the detective she often works with, along with a date earlier on. Come on! Make up your mind!!
The premise of the story was a good one. I just found it a bit repetitive.

Private Investigator Mika Chalmers gets the surprise of her life when her professional ice hockey player ex-boyfriend asks her to take his case when he is accused of rape.

Mika is a strong female lead character who also has her frailties and weaknesses, one of which is he ex.

A nicely plotted mystery with the added extra of 3 romantic possibilities for Mika to consider whilst she is attempting to find a chink in the accusers story.

An interesting read and a good solid start to the series

Ice Breakers (Mika Chalmers Hockey Mystery Book 1) by Heather C. Myers.

This is a muddled mess, there is no way this file was proof read or edited before being published.
My kindle version was riddled with grammar issues, words missing in sentences, incorrect names used, time line issues. A paragraph at the beginning of a chapter is similar to the last paragraph at the end of the previous chapter.
In the blurb it says her ex walks into her office. In the book her ex rings her. For a whole chapter the name Alex is used when describing her past relationship with Eric. It has potential. This was FREE on amazon.com in August 2020. Read at your own risk.

Excellent Vital Issue

Would have given this a 5-star except for all the editing issues. This author needs a good freelance editor (like LR-editing@twc.com). Otherwise this storyline is above excellent. People committing sexual acts against women and children along with human trafficking must be dealt with, but those women who wrongly accuse should receive the punishment their victim would have gotten. Too many walking away.

A cozy that goes off the rails into bad romance.

Mika Chalmers is a PI. Her father is owner and coach of the local professional hockey team.

When the captain of the team, her ex-boyfriend is accused of rape, she gets on the case, despite the wishes of the resident super cop.

Then we get pages of juvenile romance, with a very little actual mystery thrown in. Disappionting, considering the premise.

This is book 1 of the Mika Chalmers Mystery series. Mika's Ex- boyfriend Eric comes back after years of being away, but he has secrets. One of those secrets is he knew the victim that the police are looking into. She is working with the charming Detective Beech. Will Mika be able to help Eric, or will she find out he is guilty. I cannot wait to see what happens more with Mika Chalmers.

I enjoyed reading this book because it was easy to read and simple to follow along. It’s one of those books where you don’t have to concentrate on the words. While the plot was predictable I still enjoyed the story and its development. The story could have done with more edition as there were some grammatical mistakes but it didn’t take away from my enjoyment. I will definitely be keeping up with the series!

I was looking forward to a different type of hockey story in this book. Well I was partially right... it was different. However not different in a good way. It was confusing (every person's thoughts and conversations seemed to be convoluted), the main character kept acting virtuous but wasn't, and worst of all, so many editing errors. I wanted to read another book in the series, but this one was too much of a struggle.

Fire your proof reader!

There are more mistakes in this than in an elementary school paper. Spelling, grammar, situational mistakes, wrong names in the wrong places, it's appalling. Enough that I couldn't just brush it off. I certainly won't be reading anything else from this author.

This story brings the opportunity for a powerful female lead. Unfortunately Mika vacillates between this reader expectation and a weak in the knees, hormone rattled teenager. It is a good story. Has appropriate and convincing twists and turns. In the end the reader will be a bit disappointed that the main character did not live up to what she could have been.

I thought this book was well-written except for a few mistakes. I figured out who the perpetrator for the crime was early in the book because the clues were there--the heroine just didn't see them. I was concerned to find out as I was expecting a conclusion that I would have to purchase another book to see what happened with the heroine's love life. It was a fun read though.

Cute wee cosy mystery introducting Mika Chalmers. Mika ends up in her father's world of ice hockey when her ex boyfriend star of the team, gets accused of rape and Mika sets out to find the truth.
It was a great combo of action, mystery, romance and a touch of humour. Thoroughly enjoyed the read.

This book is very charming. I love the characters of Mika and Beech! I hope they end up together. I'm a sucker for a good mystery. The case Mika is offered to solve its complex. I think the author did a good job of presenting each side of the situation. Our heroine, Mika, showed how courageous she is for wanting to find the truth, no matter if it might break her heart.

Loved it

I really liked this book, especially since I love to read hockey romances and murder mysteries. I also liked all the characters, none of them were annoying in any way. There were no dead bodies in the story lol but I still enjoyed it. I can't wait to read the next one in the series!
