They’d won the battle, but the war was yet to come. While Tony spreads news of the rebellion throughout the Federation, Quinn helps distribute resources for the rebels. But a mysterious data card connects her to an old enemy. Trusting someone who betrayed her makes Quinn uneasy, but what choice does she have?
In search of answers, she ventures out on her own. Avoiding Federation officers and bounty hunters is difficult but staying ahead of the Russosken is even harder. Especially when they’ve taken a personal interest. Destroying the Russosken should loosen the Federation’s grip, a win-win, in Quinn’s mind.
But what will it do to those who have supported her? And will Quinn’s investigation jeopardize Tony’s mission? Freedom comes at a price. The final bill might be more than Quinn and Tony are willing to pay.
Author of the Colonial Exploration Corps, Space Janitor, Recycled World, and Krimson Empire series.
I grew up in the US Pacific Northwest, and after twenty years roaming the country with the US Air Force, I'm back. I have a spouse, three kids, and a dog named Pippin.
I've been an IT guy, a choir director, an executive assistant, a stay-at-home mom, a college instructor, and that lady at the information booth in a tourist town. But writer is the best job ever, because I get to make stuff up. Stuff I wish were true; stuff I'm glad isn't true.
When I'm not writing, I like to knit, read, bake, and ski. I also love to travel.
An amazing end to a wonderful series! There's lots of action. Quinn and Tony, Francine and Leo and others get in and out of trouble, have exciting escapes – and captures – and rescues – and thank heavens there are passages where only the mundane happens (family arguments, planning for the next leg of the journey) and you can catch your breath. The caat is almost my favorite character, commenting dryly as she does on the humans – and her nicknames for them are priceless: "Purveyor of Tuna", "Whiny Tom" are two which made me laugh. Do read the series from the beginning to get to know the characters and to follow the story properly. You won't regret it! I received an advance reader copy and voluntarily leave this honest review.
Quinn is busy helping to get resources to the various planets, so that the rebels there, who are planning on removing the Russosken influence, can do so with better arms, and planning, than previously.
In the meantime, Tony is spreading the news of the rebellion, against both Russosken and, after they are seen to, the Federation.
But Quinn is contacted by somebody she doesn't trust, but with details that mean she has to go to the meeting asked for - and now things are definitely getting more risky - especially when her soon-to-be ex husband starts interfering!
Between keeping her children safe, and trying to help Tony as much as she can, Quinn is finding life very busy.
This was a great read. Very fast paced, with some excellent plotting, and the super slick interference of a very special caat!
I loved everything about this book, and can't wait to continue the story with book four if the series: Krimson Flare.
Working my way thru the Krimson Empire series and I'm seeing a trend here. Book 1 set a nice foundation and then Ms. Huni steps the story forward a little bit and the reader is forced to play catchup for a little bit or is it that time moved forward more than I wanted it to between books. Krimson Surge (book 3) seems to have done the same thing and really making me wish Ms. Huni had put a short lead in to cover the between time or at least give us an idea of how much time has passed. I say that because as presented the premise seems a bit contrived to the degree that things were happening so fast and it bothered me till about halfway thru Krimson Surge; oh well. In Krimson Surge Ms. Huni has stepped the plot forward rather dramatically with Quinn, Tony, and the family stepping up the rebellion by attacking the Russosken (can you say space Russian Mafia) from within. Because I didn't have a good feel of the timeline things felt rushed and a more than a little contrived. I mean a small time operation is able to get around a foreign government and their "controlled" mafia (won't say it's not possible but is questionable). While I was having my issues on the front end the book accelerates and becomes more enjoyable the more you read. Some of the fun is the interplay between the characters while the action enjoyable. Something I have mixed feelings about is Sashelle, a caat who has me thinking Honor Harrington (a tip of the hat or a straight steal, you decide). Sashelle seems to be Ms. Huni's way of getting her characters out of tighter situations or enabling Ms. Huni's "DM influence" of the story. To me this is the weakest of the Krimson series to date mainly because of my problems on the front end. A weak 4 star book that was leaning to 3 but saved by the fun at the end.
A 3.5 really. Plenty of action but some convoluted maneuvering that complicates the storyline. The jumping back and forth between the team on the ships and the land team, especially when the ship teams weren't really involved, made it difficult. I couldn't really get a good feel for a couple of the characters other than they seemed to be interested in killing as many as possible. One in particular complicates a rescue because of their scorched earth approach. Quinn is almost a secondary character in this with a heavy Russosken focus. I'll read the last book to finish the series.
I was happy to see that Sashelle had a bigger part in this book. Yay! Although I enjoyed all the fighting, I was not happy about (what seemed to me) the unnecessary killing of “soldiers” who were just doing their jobs. Why not just take them prisoner?
I thoroughly enjoy and look forward to the authors’ notes at the end of the book. It’s interesting to hear what’s going on with them during Covid and how book sales work. I wish more authors would do this.
Not a bad read. I was reading several books at once so did not give this book the effort it deserved as all of the books are good and worth a good review it was a matter of which do I read. I will have to read and review all the books as they deserve it. The author has written a good story that's not as fast paced as book one but still a good read, please keep up the writing you write some good stuff and it's a joy to read.
The game is afoot. And the hunters are at home watching the game unfolding. Tony and Quinn have plans within plans unfolding, but sometimes you get the opportunity to succeed from an unexpected direction. Is there such a thing as fate, or just amazing luck? A good read.
Between starting a revolution, avoiding Quinn's husband and mother in law, and just trying to continue putting food on the table, things are keeping very busy. Lots of action, more character growth, and a bit less humor than the previous books.
Once again, this is a complete and satisfying story while leaving enough unresolved to make you look forward to the next one.
Another exciting adventure with all my friends! Through the series, Francine has emerged as one of my favorite characters, so it was great to see a story centered around her. And Francine paired with the aloof, psychic caat Sashelle is comedy gold. Looking forward to diving into book four, but a little sad it'll be my last voyage with this crew.
The adventure continues! With Krimson Surge, Julia Huni once again delivers an action-packed and entertaining tale. Up against the Russosken, Quinn, Tony, and their crew of friends and family need all the help they can get - including one certain Hadriana caat who might outsmart them all. :)
Very much looking forward to the next book in the series!
The whole crew is back and working to defeat the bad guys. We learn more about Sashelle, Leo and the rest of his family as the revolution proceeds. Very enjoyable.
I have enjoyed books from Julia Huni before and stumbled across a link for this series. (Craig Marcella I think your marketing plan is working) Keep up the great work. Your characters are spot on and always entertaining.
An excellent third part to this well written brilliant fantasy series! Excellent strong female characters, great ideas & story! I do always enjoy this writers work!
*No Spoilers* I’m enjoying the characters and story lines in this series. The authors keep the story moving at a good pace. It was fun to see Sashelle (The Mighty Hunter and Eliminator of Vermin) get a bigger role in this story (sorry, 1 small spoiler). I can’t wait for book 4 to come out.
Or however many planets there are that need to be freed from the Federation. Lol. Quinn, Tony, and the rest of the gang managed to free Lunesco, but other planets out there also need help so Tony and his connections are setting things in motion to make things happen.
I really enjoyed this! It’s just a solid sci-fi series! There’s a lot of action and tension, and there was one scene in particular, a rescue attempt that I won’t go into 👀 that was very exciting! Plus there were some insane revelations that just-
In the last book, we found out that Francine is basically Russoken royalty, or you know, the equivalent for a criminal family. Lol. And in this book not only do we find out more, but things go down! It was insane! And there are also other things that come up with Quinn and her kids, and even the events and aftermath of what happened on the asteroid Quinn and the other military spouses were abandoned on make a return. And it was ALL connected, which was very satisfying.
I also really love the characters in general. Francine is my absolute favorite! But I also love the relationships between the characters. The banter is also great, especially between Quinn and Tony. And it seems like there’s a bit of romance on the horizon? Finally? I’m excited because that’s what I’ve been wanting since the first book!
And another of my favorite characters: Sashelle the caat. I love her! She is so sassy! But don’t call her Sassy because she hates it 😆 The things she does and the things we learn about her... it was great! Especially that ending... She is just amazing!
Like I said, I enjoyed this! I really liked the overall story and their goal, which is basically to make the universe a better place (because the Federation sucks lol). I also love action, and this had plenty of that so that made me happy. Plus, I just love the characters and their banter. I’m really looking forward to seeing how this series wraps up! I’ve been having a lot of fun binge-reading this!
Abord her spaceship, QUINN trains with Francine. A little rusty in combat, she nevertheless takes pleasure in exercising.
On the way to make a delivery on Sendarine, she finds a forgotten data card in a pocket of her clothes. Someone had given it to her on Lunesco.
Watching the video, she's very surprised by what she discovers in the images...
------------
A disappointing, difficult and delicate reading, with many different characters, complicated situations and interactions, and many references to previous events.
I should have read the first two volumes in the series to be able to understand something...(And also to find out how the whole story started)...
I'm sorry but I Never entered the story of the Book. It's quite disappointing.
(You absolutely must read the first two volumes before this one).
Brilliant. This series just keeps getting better - and it certainly did in this book! I had loved the first book of the series, didn't care so much for the second, only because it was missing some of the humour of the first one. But this book had the humour back - in spades! The caat was wonderful, and I loved her snarky sense of humour, and of the titles she had given to her human minions. At the moment I like my reading material to be a bit lighter than usual, but I am always a sucker for a character who manages sarcasm with such aplomb. Quite apart from the wonderful caat, the story was really good and the characterisation was well done. A nice mix of action and plotting, and some great twists. I am looking forward to the next book!
The action continues, featuring the wide cast of characters, some of whom play a larger role in this book. I enjoyed the continuing character development and unexpected role played by the Caat. I also enjoyed the expanding political revolution taking place, it will be interesting to see where this storyline leads. There are intimations that the past has not completely been left behind and is still a threat that may yet be realized. Once again a multifaceted and enjoyable addition to the series. I received an ARC and this is my voluntary and honest opinion.

The third book in the series. Again the action is good as Quinn and her two children try to stay ahead of the space clan which wants them, with the help of all sorts of fascinating characters and surprises at every turn. The superb addition is the caat – almost like a cat, but … not quite … Highly recommended! I received this advance reader copy and voluntarily leave this honest review.
An amazing third part to this exciting sci fi series! Well written, great ideas & plot, interesting characters! What more could you want! I do recommend this author & always look forward to the next story! Great Read!!
