STRENGTH VS. HONOR

For more than a decade, the Republic of the Sphere’s army hid in silence behind the mysterious, impregnable Wall of Fortress Republic. But now the Wall has come down, and Paladin Max Ergen, commander of Operation Eruptio, has his sights set on an invaluable prize. His Dieron, a Draconis Combine military district capital, a former Republic world harboring secrets from past wars. His troops have spent years training in isolation behind the Wall, and they are hungry for battle, ready to remind the Inner Sphere that the wounded Republic is still a force to be reckoned with. But Dieron is also the fortress of Warlord Kambei Okamoto, one of the Combine’s top military officials, and he and his Dieron Regulars are committed to holding the line and defending their home against Republic aggression, no matter the cost. Although the Republic may have surprise and numbers on their side, the Combine troops boast the strength of an impregnable redoubt—and the keen edge of their own unimpeachable honor. And when these two forces clash, the battle for Dieron will be a titanic one indeed…

This book continues the Dark Age storyline started in the Mech Warrior Dark Age series which was a continuation of the classic Battletech series. The Mech Warrior Dark Age series consisted of thirty books published by WizKids and ROC. This book is published by Catalyst Game Labs and Topps. The books in this series, like the books in the original Battletech series and the Mech Warrior Dark Age series, are by various authors. Shell Games is by Jason Schmetzer.
The Republic of the Sphere has known a long period of peace and prosperity. Then the interstellar communications network a.k.a. the HPG net is destroyed and many planets in the Republic find themselves cut off from the rest of the galaxy with communications taking weeks or even months. Unrest leads to several factions on several planets trying to overthrow the local governments and seize power for themselves.
In this one many years have passed while Terra and Prefecture X have hidden behind the Fortress Republic wall. Now the Fortress Wall has come down and the Republic forces are on the move to retake worlds that have fallen in the years since the Wall went up. Paladin Max Ergen has been tasked with the leadership of Operation Eruptio. His first task is to attack Dieron, a Draconis Combine military distract capital which was a former Republic world. Defending it will be Warlord Kambei and his Dieron Regulars who are crack troops who will defend the planet with unimpeachable honor until the last man if necessary. Whoever wins, the battle will be bloody and hard-fought. This is another great book in this series.

A fairly competent little piece of military fiction hampered by being set in the cringe era of battletech
