Before she became one of Sweden’s most popular crime writers, Camilla Läckberg (b. 1974) worked as a marketing director and product manager for several years. Her first two crime novels, Isprinsessan (The Ice Princess) and Predikanten (The Preacher), received rave reviews from the Swedish press and quickly found a large readership. But her big breakthrough came when Stenhuggaren (The Stonecutter) was nominated for The Crime Novel of the Year award in 2005, and also when Olycksfågeln (The Stranger) and Tyskungen (The Hidden Child) were made lead titles in Bonnier’s Book Club.

Camilla’s books have gained even more popularity after being adapted into a TV-series, produced by SVT (Swedish Television).

In April 2017 her tenth book in the Fjällbacka-series, Häxan, was released – claimed to be her best novel so far! In 2019 Camilla received a diamond book for Häxan, since it has sold in over 300 000 copies in Sweden!

And in the spring of 2019 heralds the global launch of The Golden Cage, the first of two dark and suspenseful novels by Camilla Läckberg. After ten internationally bestselling novels and over 26 million copies sold, Läckberg’s next adventure will be a psychological suspense duology.

The Golden Cage was the most sold book in Sweden 2019.

Yeah! Our dear Faye finally finds the way to escape from her golden cage and made her husband dearest Jack pay for his ugly mistakes, put him behind bars for killing their own child!

Don’t worry her dear child and her mother are safe, residing in a villa at Italy, living under radars as Faye builds her company, globalize her brands, flirting with hot bartenders half her age, pilots, having threesomes! See, she finally has a dreamy life! She’s back and now she’s wiser and stronger! She may have found a new love interest: an angel investor David Schiller becomes her confidante who is dealing with a challenging divorce from his extremely obsessive wife!

But when you have too much, you also have more risks to lose ! Now somebody sneakily starts to buy the shares of her company Revenge! Faye has no intention to lose the company she’d built from scratch and she already gave her word to her recently passed away friend Chris, she’ll never let people take away what she’s worked for years! She’s not gonna be doormat again as like her husband Jack made her feel!

Now dear old friend detective reopens the investigation and insists she was at the crime scene. She thinks she may have involved with her daughter’s death ( who is much alive right now)

As Faye thinks she can deal with her company problems and detective, another bomb falls on her lap! Her husband dearest Jack ran from prison vehicle and he’s adamant to get his revenge! Yes, Faye, the big confrontation is coming now! Only one of you will stay alive! The question is which one of them will make it?

The first half of the book was a little bit slow for me! I enjoyed to see the snippets of Faye’s new glorious life! I loved to see her strong, carefree, bitchy attitudes around pretentious, privileged societal of Sweden.

But I missed the first book’s intriguing, shocking pacing. Thankfully as soon as Jack escapes from prison, tension is finally increased and the author literally hit the gas so hard ! The whirlwind pacing of the story, shocking revelations, ponzi schemes, mind games, action packed surprising twists start to mesmerize us! The author brought her entire writing magic back!

And we also learn so much shocking secrets about Faye’s childhood time: most of them were so harsh, blunt, dark to absorb! But now we put the pieces together and got the entire picture! We can fully understand the real motives and psychological explanations of Faye’s past choices and victimization.

I lowered one star because of slow beginning but especially the second half of the book was stunning, mind blowing! Especially the encounter of Jack and Faye! If you liked the first book, you shouldn’t miss this one!

Special thanks to NetGalley and Knopf Doubleday Publishing for sharing this amazing digital reviewer copy with me in exchange my honest thoughts.

EXCERPT: The studio lights were blinding. Faye had lost track of time. She had no idea how long the interview had been going on for, or how long was left. The audience was seated in rows of banked seating - a hungry, amorphous mass, on the alert for every word, every shift in her facial expression.

Usually she thrived in these situations. There was a little diva inside her who liked sitting in front of an audience, feeling the nerves of recording for TV. But today she felt strained and anxious.

Thinking about the shares being bought had kept her awake most of the night, tossing and turning. She had gone over the conversation in advance - conversations with women she would need to persuade to keep their shares without revealing in any way what was happening. No easy task - it would take both tact and finesse.

A slightly too long silence wrenched her away from her thoughts. She had been asked a question and was expected to answer.

'The plan is to expand to the USA,' she heard herself say. 'I 'm here in Stockholm for a month or so to meet potential investors and put together the final details. And I want to personally oversee the issue of new stock.'

It was horribly warm. A trickle of sweat ran down the small of her back.

Fredrik Skavlan, the Norwegian talk show host, sat up straight.

'But this hunger . . . What is it that drives you? You're already a billionaire. A feminist icon.'

Faye strung out the silence. The other guests were an American Hollywood actor, a female professor of linguistics who had just published a non-fiction bestseller, and a woman who had climbed Mount Everest with prosthetic legs. The Hollywood star had been flirting ceaselessly with Faye ever since she arrived at the studio.

'Before my best friend Chris died, I promised her I would live life for both of us. I want to see how far I can get, what I can build. My biggest fear is dying without achieving my full potential.'

'And Julienne, your daughter who was murdered by your ex-husband. What does her memory mean to you?'

Fredrik Skavlan leaned forward and the tension in the studio increased.

She didn't answer right away, letting the temperature rise even further. Reach boiling point. The answer was learned by heart, but it was important it sounded natural.

'She's with me in everything I do. When the longing and pain get too much I bury myself in my work. I'm running Revenge, trying to make it grow, so that I don't lie down and die myself. So that I don't end up as just another woman silenced in the shadows of a man's actions. So that he - the man I once loved, but who killed our daughter - doesn't succeed in killing me too.'

ABOUT 'SILVER TEARS': Faye Adelheim has had to fight hard her whole life. But now, she is rich, her business has become a global brand, and she is hidden safely away in Italy with her daughter, where her violent ex-husband, Jack, can no longer harm them.

But Faye’s world is turned upside down when she discovers Jack is no longer behind bars, and she is forced to return to Sweden.

Just as Faye is in the fight of her life to keep her family safe, the dark truth about her childhood, which she has kept buried for years, is dramatically uncovered. And Faye is about to discover that even the best kept secrets have the power to destroy everything…

MY THOUGHTS: I loved Camilla Läckberg's Patrik Hedström series. This series is completely different.

I should have felt sympathetic towards Faye. I didn't. I found her cold and calculating, yet also strangely vulnerable. But I didn't like her. At times I rooted for her. But I didn't like her.

Another thing I didn't like was the very graphic and superfluous sex scenes that pepper the book. They add little to nothing to the story and I felt that the majority of them were entirely unnecessary.

Was I bored by the story? No, definitely not. But neither did I love it. I didn't skim anything other than some sex scenes, and I never considered not finishing it, but I didn't love it. I liked it, but not a whole lot. It has all the ingredients that should make me love it: secrets, love, betrayal and revenge.

If I had been given this book with no indication of who had written it, I never would have picked Camilla Läckberg. I read the first book in this series after I was declined it on Netgalley, and while I didn't love it either, I liked The Golden Cage more than Silver Tears. The ending of Silver Tears makes it apparent that there is another book to come. It is one that I won't be putting my hand up for.

Oh, well. I'm pretty dissapointed. Again.

Faye series are similar to 50 shades of Grey, the only difference is that here the woman is a dominant (villain).

The story is predictable and Faye is just dislikeable.

I miss Patrick, Erica and Mellberg! :)

No one f*cks with Faye!

Get ready for the ultimate story of revenge…part two.

Faye Adelheim is back in control of her company, her family, and her future. Or is she? Her husband, Jack, breaks out of prison and someone starts buying up all of the shares of her brand, Revenge. Faye must fight for what is hers, and she will protect her assets at all costs.

This Scandinavian Noir thriller continues where The Golden Cage left off. Readers will need to know what happened in the first book to understand the second in the series. In this book, Faye finds her power as a woman. She takes her life into her own hands and creates her own destiny. This includes running her own successful global company funded by strong women, and undergoing her own sexual revolution, where she experiments with many partners. There aren’t any surprising twists, but it is compulsively readable. I listened to the audiobook, which held my interest all the way through. I also liked that the reader is given backstory on what happened to Faye’s brother and why. My questions from the first book were all completely answered and all loose ends were tied up. However, it does end on a cliffhanger, setting up a third book. Will I read the next? Probably! My only criticism is that the sex scenes felt unnecessarily graphic and gratuitous.

Seriously? When you buy an author you like and expect a nice police/murder story.. you are not looking for a pseudo feminist / soft porn version.. pretty disappointing, made to please the crowds but not true readers :-(. Hope there will be no second time..,

I put my hand to my breast and felt the necklace hanging there. I ran my fingers over the silver tears that felt so fragile even though they were pretty robust, according to Mom. The island grew larger before my eyes and I shuddered as a cold shiver ran down my spine.

I don’t know what it was about Silver Tears that prompted me to pick it up: this is not ordinarily my sort of thing and I may not be the best judge of its merits. I suppose I thought this would be a mindless thriller (and it is kind of that), but I also didn’t realise that it’s the second book of a series; and although author Camilla Läckberg does a good job of unobtrusively catching the reader up with the events of the previous book (The Golden Cage), this may be more thrilling, and the flashback scenes might be more earth-shattering, for those readers who started the series from the beginning. As for me: I didn’t love the writing (and although I lost patience with the plot, I did keep reading to see how it would end) and I didn’t love the overall philosophy (that men are animals and women are therefore justified in doing whatever it takes to make their way in the world). This was just okay, and even though Silver Tears ends on a cliffhanger, I can’t imagine picking up the next in the series. (Note: I read an ARC through NetGalley and passages quoted may not be in their final forms.)

As soon as Giovanni had realized he couldn’t use mastery and male dominance to convince her to agree to his terms, the meeting had been turned to her advantage. Faye loved the game of negotiation. The opposing players were usually men, and they always made the mistake of underestimating her expertise simply because she was a woman. Later, when they had to admit defeat, there were two types of men. There were the ones who left the meeting boiling with rage, their hatred of women even more firmly entrenched. And then there were the ones who loved it, who were turned on by her commanding presence and know-how, who left the meeting with a hard-on in their trousers and an inquiry about whether she was free for dinner.

As Silver Tears opens, we immediately learn that Faye is hiding out in a remote Italian villa with her mother and young daughter; that Faye is the billionaire founder of a cosmetics company; and that Faye framed her husband for their daughter’s supposed murder, for which he is serving a life sentence back in Sweden. I’d imagine all of that is covered in The Gilded Cage, so to propel the action of this second volume, we also soon learn that someone is buying up stock in a hostile takeover of Faye’s company; Faye’s ex-husband has escaped from prison; and one dogged Swedish police officer still has questions about her murdered daughter, whose body has, obviously, never been found. As Faye returns to Stockholm in order to deal with the business situation, she must keep an eye out for the ex-husband, stay one step ahead of the police, all while forging a formidable sisterhood with wronged women (presumably characters from the first book), engaging in several steamy sex scenes, and falling in love with a new man. Meanwhile, action in the present is intercut with scenes from Faye’s childhood (in which her mother was routinely beaten by her father and she herself suffered unimaginable abuse) and the lesson learned seems to be that men are evil and chauvinistic, so women are morally free to respond in any way that promotes their own interest and welfare.

She pictured him out there. Once upon a time she had loved him more than anything, perhaps even more than she loved Julienne. Now she just wanted to destroy him for what he had done to their daughter, and for the humiliation he had heaped on Faye. For all the women who had been in her place, suppressed, feeling worthless, who had taken their lives, been deprived of their dignity. Who had been kept as serfs. Exploited. Women who were still shackled, even if the appearance of those shackles had changed over the centuries.

Silver Tears doesn’t really pass a credibility test (could Faye really successfully hide her daughter in Italy — even calling and facetiming her from Sweden — while at least one police officer doubted she had been murdered?), but I concede that the details of thrillers don’t always need to add up. My bigger problem was Läckberg’s bizarre version of feminism: All of her female characters are gorgeous, and while they bristle at the men who would treat them as sex objects, they (and especially Faye) are happy to use their sexuality to their advantage in business situations, to come onto younger, less powerful men (which, of course, delights the men in this reversal of power dynamics), and to justify criminal behaviour if it protects their own interests (forget about setting up her husband for the “murder” of their daughter, Faye does much worse in this book and I suppose we’re supposed to cheer the girl power?) Not for me, even if the “mystery” kept me reading to the end.

Another wild, weird, perverse and wonderful gem from the devious mind of Camilla Lackberg. Lackberg has a mind and voice like no other. If you like her, you’ll really like her. (It me!) A feminist sensibility, a love of revenge tales, a stomach for the brutality that forges strong women, and a sense of humor are a must for prospective readers of Camilla Lackberg.

Ready to dive in? Good! First of all, you should read The Golden Cage before reading this, because this is a sequel. I can’t say much about the plot of this book without revealing spoilers about The Golden Cage. So I’ll just say that here, you get to revisit Faye and learn more about how she is enjoying her newfound power and freedom. The book contains all of the explicit sex, gritty power play, and sweet revenge of the first book, so if that one hooked you as it did moi, you’ll enjoy this too.

I just need to take a minute to say I love the straightforward, hilarious, overtly sexy, grab-your-power way Lackberg writes. This, like The Golden Cage, is a butt-kicking, outrageous revenge fantasy in bold color, not for the faint of heart OR for people who are looking for, say, total realism. But it’s an extremely fun, bold, feminine, sexually charged escape tale that also has a fair share of brutality and heartbreak. You learn a lot more about Faye’s upbringing and how tragedies (and her response to them) made her the woman she is today.

All in all, another unique and wonderful offering from Lackberg. The plot is still outrageous, the characters hilarious, and the revenge sweet. Read this, but read The Golden Cage first for sure.

All the thanks to Knopf Publishing and NetGalley for helping me make my way through this author’s bold and unique offerings.

Note: This book is a lot more sexually explicit than what I usually recommend, so make sure you’re prepared for that.

“Is there a law in this universe that says everything has to go to hell at once?”
Maybe.....
in this story! 😉

Step into the world of the ultra wealthy beautiful, sexy people....
a billionaire finance company, with their splendid mansions at the tip of private beaches, expensive wines, VIP lounges, travel, personal trainers, fancy cars, boats, gorgeous bodies, fancy parties, successful unfaithful men, hunger for money, power, and women....
secrets, betrayal, hefty obstacles, competition between companies, naivety, hypocrisy, murder conviction, prisoner transport escapee..... and a mystery murder trickery tale...
who’s falsifying who?

Faye Bergendahl had the misfortune of being born in the wrong family. A family that was broken from the beginning.
It was up to her to break free.
She does.
Her cosmetic company, Revenge, gave her the title of “Businesswomen of the Year”.

Faye had observed life closely as a child growing up. She grew up in a horrific household.... an abusive father, a brother no better, secrets, rape, and a sweet frail fearful mother.

“There were happy people everywhere. In the papers, on TV, on the radio. I saw their faces, heard their laughter, their stories. The novels I read were filled with them. Some of our neighbors in Fjallbacka seemed happy, even though they live next door to hell. Our darkness didn’t seem to spill over the garden boundaries. But who knew? I only saw the outside. Just like they only saw us from the outside, through their kitchen windows are the same all chats across the hedge about the lawn”.

There are four parts to this story — it picks up momentum where “The Golden Cage” left off.....
with present day troubles and past family history troubles...
Puzzling mystery throughout.

I enjoy spending time with Camilla Läckberg. She has a unique style. I like not knowing what to expect.
Entering her mind-escaping world — so different than my own — is psychologically interesting... a little sexy and playful...
but also with authentic heart.

You know you enjoy an authors work - when you still want to read more of what’s she’s written. (which I do).
I still want to read her “Ice Princess” series.

Thank you Knopf Doubleday Publishing, Netgalley, and Camilla Läckberg,

i'm SO excited for this one - i read the first one of this duology (i don't think its a series) almost 3 years ago and absolutely ATE it up, i didn't realise she had a second one out because the author is Swedish I think and whenever I look at her profile on goodreads it only shows the Swedish versions and is just very confusing - but I am so so excited (please be a good thriller i need it rnnn)

At the beach - you read it. It is an easy story - you can go on until the end. The writing is very bad - lots of repetitions and odd construction. I cannot believe she is an author so well known and with such a good reputation.

Camilla Lackberg drażni i zbija z tropu nawet swoich najbardziej zatwardziałych fanów opowieścią o kobiecej zemście i świecie pozbawionych wszelkiej moralności.

A Lackberg? Brutalnie ten świat pozorów okaleczyła i oszpeciła.

Historia Faye to takie literackie szyderstwo. Z jednej strony historia kobiecej zemsty ostatecznej i siostrzeństwa ponad wszystko.

Slow to start with but when it gets going, the story doesn't let off. Still confusing, dark, brutal at times but it definitely kept me engaged. And that ending. Please let there be another book.

4.5/5

I am now completely obsessed with the Faye's Revenge series, and The Golden Cage really blew me away. I am happy to say I loved Silver Tears almost just as much. I haven't read any of Camilla Läckberg's other novels yet, but I am telling myself I really need to get on that since I loved these two so much. This is a very lewd book at times, and I know one of the complaints I've seen is that it is very vulgar. There is a lot of sex in the book and there was a lot of it in the last book as well, but for some reason, it hasn't bothered me. It didn't take away from my love of the story and I am fully behind the amazing revenge plot of this book. Faye is one of the strongest, most badass female characters that I have had the pleasure to read, and she is not afraid to take what she wants. I love that she is such a smart character, although I was a little disappointed in her in this book. She was driving me crazy and I just wanted to shake her, but luckily, she smartens up and goes back to the person I know and love.

We learn a lot more about Faye's past in this one and it is DARK people. It was truly heartbreaking and very hard to read at times. Läckberg's writing is very straight and to the point, and she definitely doesn't skimp on the details. This could be triggering to some thanks to rape taking a front seat to the past plotline, and if that is a trigger for you then you might want to stay away. I listened to the audiobook for the first book and did it again for Silver Tears, but I liked this one on audio a bit less. They switched the narrator to Tanya Cubric from Ann Richardson, and while Cubric did a nice job, I really preferred Richardson's voice for Faye and can only hope they switch back to her for book 3. This does end on a cliffhanger which killed me, and I will be anxiously waiting for the next book!

I received a complimentary digital copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Libro molto sensuale e sessuale, forse fin troppo a volte.

A Ressaca.

I used to really like Läckberg's Fjällbacka books, but I am not a fan of this new series. They are too predictable for me, and because it is so obvious to me as reader, I just got annoyed with the main character for not seeing who the 'bad guys' are she can't trust.

Another great book by Camilla Lackberg and Knopf Publishing! I loved The Golden Cage, so I was super excited to receive a copy of Silver Tears. This book continued the story of Faye and what happened after Jack was sent to prison. Faye is still thriving, but someone is now trying to take her company, Revenge, from her. Her investors are pulling out and Faye has no idea why. Her priority is keeping her family safe, but when she hears her ex-husband Jack has escaped from prison, she has to do everything she can to protect what’s hers.

Thoughts: You need to read The Golden Cage before you read this one! This is the perfect second book in the series and continues where the first book left off. I love Faye and her strong personality. She is so adventurous and powerful and it makes you want to root for her while reading. This book goes into her childhood and what brought her to where she is today. This book is a quick read and I love Lackberg’s writing style.

Lackberg’s books are more of a mystery than thriller, where you’re wondering where the story will go. This book is about revenge, sisterhood, and the power of women. Faye doesn’t always get a happy ending, but she gets the ending that she wants and has control over. Yes, it was a bit predictable, but it was a fun story to read overall. The characters could have been more dynamic, but if you read The Golden Cage, this is a great follow up. 3.5 stars for this sexy and dark mystery.
