Nine Years After

Rate this book
This book was selected and is included in the Prime Reading program on Amazon.com from 1-Dec-2022 to 1-Mar-2023.Clary's books have earned over five-hundred five-star reviews on Amazon. This is a stand alone series, meaning any book can be read in any order. From the safety of the Deep Hole Sanctuary, two are sent to the surface for the first time in nine years. Rumors, tales, and expectations for the world above are that they will find a desolate wasteland filled with mutated animals and bands of roving hoards of starving people. It's a death sentence. The book is about the events, of course, but more so about the people and how they evolve to cope with life on the surface, one they have not seen since age seven. What they encounter, how they handle each crises, and their growth as they survive in a world unknown and unexpected. Clary's books always contain unexpected twists and turns, so the reader never knows where the story is going-and that is part of the fun.

I've never seen a dragon, but wish I had. I live in Washington State with my wife, youngest son, and dog named Molly. I spend my time doing what I love the most: writing about an action-packed fantasy world of dragons, and magic. My leisure time is spent traveling and exploring the beautiful countryside in the Pacific Northwest from high desert to forests to coastal terrain.

In recent years, I've published over a dozen fantasy books including one called "DRAGON! Stealing the Egg" which began the idea of how to live and survive in a world where dragons are part of the landscape. The Dragon Clan Series is built on that idea. It is unique in that it introduces a new main character in each of the eight books of the series, yet continues the same storyline.

The book entitled Blade of Lies: Mica Silverthorne Story was a finalist in an Amazon national novel writer’s contest in 2013. My most recent series is The Mage’s Daughter, which is a little action and a bit of magic.

This is a 2 star read and I give myself 5 stars for finishing it. We have bunkers of people (different ages etc) in these bunkers underground. Its 9 years after the fall out and the leaders decide to pick 2 sixteen year old naive, experienced kids to go above ground to see what is happening. Now they didn't ask for volunteers, they drugged these kids and threw them out and said you can't come back but will you seek other bunkers out for us and report what you have found. REALLY???? Now these leaders are suppose to be smart and one has a military background. UGH...... then it really goes bad from there. This 16 year old basically saves the day.... yep.... My 16 can't even make his own bed. This story is way to unbelievable..... I gave this 2 stars because I don't like giving out 1 star reviews. Save your time and money and DO NOT read this book.

This was not for me and I should have been more discerning in my selection of book but the numerous 5 star reviews convinced me to give it a go. I persisted in reading till the end. I haven't read any of the prequels but this was advertised as a standalone so I expected to follow easily. I didn't. Nine years after fallout two drugged teenagers are sent from their bunker above ground to gage the situation. Implausible and unrealistic I will not read any other books in this series. 2 stars.

This is another apocalyptic book, this one taking place nine years after a nuclear war. Some people are living in underground bunkers, the one in particular with around 300 people in it. There's a sort of council that makes all decisions and one man and one woman are sent outside to determine if it is possible to live outside. There are also problems in the underground group since very few babies have been born in those nine years, far fewer than expected.

It's not the entire reason they are sent out, though, and they soon find out that they have been told many lies. Instead of finding a world that is mostly dead but may have monsters turns out to be a normal world with some humans having survived and living on farms or in small groups.

The two sent out end up interacting with farmers and end up fighting men who are part of a larger group of men that are basically thugs and killers. They try to break into these bunkers, kill everyone there and take all the supplies. There's lots of fighting, lots of death, major discoveries and revelations and what could be a whole new society being started.

Lots of action, some major philosophical questions and interesting characters.

Please Help --- Listening on Audible. Have not yet finished. This is why:
The narrator reads like an 80 year old AI voice. Why does an 80 year old, with poor intonation, narrate a book where the main characters are teenagers???
The two teen protagonists have been kicked out of their bunker, unceremoniously, without warning.
They are pissed and scared. They can never go back to their bunker.
However, within an hour or so of their time outside, they love the outdoor world and are grateful to be out of the bunker.
There is no mention of a connection with ANYONE from the bunker. Apparently they have no parents, siblings, teachers or friends that they care about at all.
After walking around for a day, they spot a military group and decide the group is going to raid their bunker and kill everyone they know.
Suddenly, this is an emergency. It turns out that they DO care about the people in the bunker (who we know virtually nothing about) and don't want everyone to die, and they decide to single-handedly kill an army of 25 or 30 men.
I stopped listening as the two teens were in the process of taking out the entire army with perfectly aimed rifle shots.

I see that there are many 4 and 5 star reviews of this book.
Should I continue to listen???
Does it get better???

Great read!!

This book title did not immediately make me want to read it. Most of these types of stories are more interesting in the initial phases. Escaping, surviving, etc. However, I loved this book. 2 young survivors emerge unwillingly to the aftermath of war with no expectations or understanding of the world above.. Their learning experiences are fascinating and entertaining and very thought provoking. Very original plot and wonderful characters make this a must read for fans of post apocalyptic genre or any who love coming of age stories.

Editing, LeRoy. So basic. Also,

First bitch is editing errors. They "wadded" into a river? One of several mistakes I found only 127 pages in. And then there is the unbelievably of what these kids know or don't know. They were seven years old when they went in, but only know what rain is from books? They never heard of sunburn? But somehow they are crack shots and can strategize and kill 18 "soldiers" without a hitch? Naw, man, I can't do it.

Finally, a different viewpoint!

I really enjoy Apocalypse books. But after reading 15 or more per year, they all start to run together and all have the same basic storyline. Nine Years After combines an End of the World story with a Silo series twist and was a real joy to read.
The unexpected twist at the end was a refreshing change.
I look forward to more in this this series.

hard to put down

There was always action. Disaster waiting. Characters were interesting. Storyline is believable to a large extent. The ending came too soon and was a surprise. Expected to see a sequel not 2 presumably unconnected “prequels”. Will read them though. Still want a sequel.

The more I read the more I enjoyed

This is my first Clay book, certainly not my last. Loved the story, so many twists and new story lines. You have to get over that a 16 year old would never think, speak or react like our hero.
That being said it was a great story! Can't wait to read the other books in this series.
It so reminds me of all the Silo stories.

Nice clean story well thought out

After surviving years after an EMP world by living in a bunker, two youth are ejected out into the wild world to find the world was not what they expected. This tale is well thought out and very PG. Some survivors discover they might have to change many things in their philosophy.

A great read

A wonderful story with many surprise twist and turns. Very special characters who stayed in my mind even while I wasn't reading the book. So good I was disappointed when it ended.

Nice

Reasonable scenario well written. Things are in such a mess in the nation today it is pleasure to read a SHTF story that has a plausable outcome and is not filled from beginning to end with endless wars of slaughter!

Slightly under-edited

I enjoyed the storyline. We’ll written, but grammatical errors tend to jar me out of the story. Simply having several people read the book before publishing would eliminate this problem.

Excellent book

I read entirely too much . This book is excellent in all ways. Great storyline, solid character development, and intriguing take on the post apocalyptic genre. Also, it is a stand alone book, which in this genre is rare. I highly recommend this book.

Good story

This story is not as far fetched as many would think. I think is a real I as tic view of the way life would be like for the survivors of a nuclear war. Human nature guarantees it.

Different Take n Apocalyptic Fiction

This book had a lot of twists & turns. It went in a very different direction than I expected. A bit too wordy, perhaps but held my interest. All in all, an interesting twist to the usual apocalyptic fiction I am used to.

Another perhaps good book that needed a editor. Far-fetched a bit, sheltered 16 yr old boy turning into a seasoned Navy Seal in less than two days. Not sure I can get through the next two if they are also error-filled.

Best ebook I have read.

Well written and pulls you along with the storyline. Engaging characters as well as intriguing thoughts on life after a catastrophe. A few miscues on grammar but nothing I couldn't overlook. Truly enjoyed this.

American West Reborn

Ever think our world has become too complicated to fix? If we had the chance to rebuild it, what might we do differently next time? This is not an end of world story, but one of new beginnings. Loved it, keep writing LeRoy!

I really liked this book. It was a different take of the future. A lot of twists and turns . This is a good story for people tired of zombies and would like an intelligent and thought provoking story.

Simply a must read

This whole series of books is so good they had me staying up way to late because I didn't want to stop reading. The characters are captivating and the storyline is irresistible. Made me sad when there was no more to read.

Language F-word

Like too many books these days, it starts off with no foul words, then abruptly turns vulgar! Is it today's authors? Or, the publishers?
Whatever. I definitely can fund better, more uplifting things to do with my latter years.

Great story with many twists and turns.

The usual end of the world story but with so many delicious twists and turns that it was a delight to read. And best of all there were no grammatical errors that grate so harshly on the ears. Good job!

Nine years later

I love the idea that you don't have to read this series in order.I enjoyed reading this book. I've read "Down in the hole" stories before. I like that this one is after they come up.

Great read.

You will not be prepared for the ending or for a lot of what happens along the way. The logic is sound even if the results are surprising. My thinking about many things I took for granted was challenged in a good way. Read the book and decide for yourself.

Read this all in one night.

Very thought provoking actually. Well written. Bonus is the setting is the PNW which is where I am from and know all of the geography and towns mentioned. Going to read the rest just as fast.

Nine Years After, a different kettle of fish

In this book most of what I expected never happened. It was a delight. Mr Clary wove an intricate story with believable characters. I would trust Tests and Danner.
