Grandma has just died. Preparing for the funeral an old framed photo is discoverd in a drawer. It was once Grandpa's favourite bedside picture of his wife. The discovery of the picture starts a journey of discovery for her grandson. A short story.
I was born in London in 1956 and lived most of my life in the south of England.
I ran a naturist resort in Portugal for three fun-filled summers. Mrs Bun decided this was what we wanted to do. We spent two years searching before we found L’Olivette, our little paradise in the South of France.
Teachers always tell you to write about things you know about. So, that is what I did!
During the long evenings of the quiet season, a series of novellas and short stories started to take shape, one letter at a time
The first book in the Rags to Riches series, in which our central characters first meet and romance starts, “The Uncovered Policeman” was published on Valentine’s Day 2016.
Nameless Main Character gets the dreaded phone call. It’s the hospital on the other line; Grandma has just passed away.
She was 73. She left a letter for NMC, as he’s the only one who lives near her now—and the one she truly trusts.
Grandma and Grandpa were music lovers, and they encouraged NMC’s mother to follow her own sonic passions as well. It’s actually how NMC’s parents met in college.
NMC shares stories of Grandma with his live-in girlfriend, Ann.
Very…rambly. No name given to the narrative MC (huge personal pet peeve). Apparently this is supposed to be shocking? This reader just went, “ehhh."
Here is a short and touching story of saying goodbye to a grandmother who helped raise the narrator. As usual with Ted's stories, the sensitive character portrayals help him slip in a bit of advocacy for naturism, a bit of love for music, and a fine sense of what is artful and good. I look forward to more stories like this.
A repeating dream is a feature of this story. In following his grandma's instructions he has an important realization. His partner is an important rock in his life. Read this story!
"Grandma's Photo" is a bitter-sweet tale of loss and memories. A recommended short read by Ted Bun with an unashamed plug for naturalism along the way.
