A Favorite Daughter

Rate this book
"That the wish of giving happiness to you might add force to the other inducements which led me on, I shall not attempt to deny." - Jane Austen, Pride and PrejudiceMr. Bennet had very often wished that, instead of spending his whole income, he had laid by an annual sum for the better provision of his children, and of his wife, if she survived him. Alas, he did not live long enough to do it. After her father’s untimely death, Miss Elizabeth Bennet reads a letter from him in which he tasks her with the protection of her family. Elizabeth is willing to do everything in her power to fulfill her father's dying wish, even if it means marrying a man she cannot love. There is, however, one man whom she can love. Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy. The two start out as friends, but Mr. Darcy wants more. Much more. Surely Elizabeth will not always sacrifice her own happiness for the sake of her family. Or will she?

Well written but not interesting

An average book. The style of writing was up to the author’s normal easy to read style. But the plot and the characters weren’t very interesting. The new bad guy is taken cared of but Wickham is not. Darcy tells him he’s going to prison if he upsets Darcy again. So in the future of this story must either go straight, which seems unlikely or do something drastic to deal with all his debt that Darcy owns. I would worry about being killed by Wickham or kidnapping Lizzy or one of their kids.

Average book.

It was a good quick read. Unfortunately not quite interesting as other works by P.O Dixon.
Some plots were so far fetched that it already was ridiculous, I mean for once Mr. Wickham being in London in the Gentlemen‘s club White‘s?! No money to pay any debts he has but entering one of the most famous Gentlemen‘s club from that time? (According to Google)

One point I must say that I liked The love at first sight for Elizabeth and Darcy. It‘s refreshing. But our heroine still sometimes annoyed me with her ‚clueless‘ behavior and so on.

The narration (Benjamin Fife) was well done and he did various voices for the characters which I liked.

- Clean Content
- Quick listen (4 hours)
- Low Angst

(P.s I‘m sorry for my first Review, it got posted even though I haven‘t clicked Done 🤷‍♀️ and autocorrect with the german words 😂)

Elizabeth to the rescue plot. A thrilling read with a lot of warmth.

Mr Bennet had passed and left Elizabeth with the burden of caring for the rest of the family. Was she to be the sacrificial lamb or may a knight in shining armour come to her rescue?

A year-long search for the heir ensued but he proved difficult to find. When he was discovered, Elizabeth would have preferred it to be impossible but she was nothing if not resourceful and she was not without friends...

An intriguing twist to Jane added spice to this otherwise chaste read. Although it did contain a steamy scene, it was in the literal sense rather than the abstract. (You will understand what I mean when you read the book ;)

Elizabeth gets a sneak peek
4.5* rounded up
Audiobook Review:
After Mr. Bennet dies, Elizabeth is left in charge of her family until the heir comes to claim Longbourn. Determined not to marry him, she maneuvers Mary into his path instead while they are at Rosings under Lady Catherine’s scrutiny, and where Elizabeth meets Darcy for the first time in a book shop. I really enjoyed this Darcy, who falls for Elizabeth quickly, yet there is no Hunsford moment at all. I will confess to a snicker when Elizabeth inadvertently walks into the wrong bedchamber at Rosings and receives a bit of a shock. I further confess I was a little disappointed a similar scene wasn’t repeated in the epilogue once they were married.

There’s a new villain who makes himself known due to Lydia’s propensity to be stupid, and even Wickham appears to have his say. Darcy-in-charge adequately takes care of them both. Benjamin Fife’s narration and performance brought out the best of this story.

Mr. Bennet is dead and Elizabeth thinks it's her duty to see to her family's happiness. Collins wants to marry her but Elizabeth and Lady Catherine persuade him to consider Mary instead. Elizabeth met Darcy in Kent, and they became friendly. Jane's blind for mysterious reasons but this does not stop Bingley from being attracted to her.

I liked some sweet scenes but certain twists seem a little randomly motivated. When Lydia gets in trouble with an original villain I wasn't a fan of how Elizabeth is prepared to throw herself on her sword to save her family from ruin, and it might be ruined anyway. Lydia is accused of theft and Elizabeth never asks her if it's true. Darcy offers to help and she's like, nope, sir, you can't, but he throws good money at bad villains anyway.

Somehow Wickham was skulking around at White's which seemed a bit strange. White's was apparently the most exclusive, prestigious gentlemen's club in London and it was pretty difficult to become a member. Current members reportedly include Charles III and William...Somehow I really doubt they would have admitted a broke steward's son back then.

I read this a few years back and it didn't speak to me. Let me say, there is nothing like a well narrated book to lift the story up and make it come alive!

Darcy is a bit shmoozy in this. He meets Elizabeth at Rosings and kind of falls for her quickly. He does a lot of implying, but never outright asking for Elizabeth to marry him.

This all happens while she is going through on the the worst years of her life. Mr. Bennet is dead, and he makes it her responsibility to hold 'everything' together. That is a lot for a 20 year old.
On top of that, the Longbourn heir is a young man who sets his eyes on her, even though Mary would be a better choice. (Beautiful Jane is very sight impaired).

When things go from bad to worse, I can completely understand Elizabeth feeling like she has no one to turn to for help.
Thank goodness Darcy not only doesn't hold that against her, her steps up!

Charlotte had a small role in this story, but it was an important one. I wish we could have learned if the sisters helped her find marriage and a good home.

Benjamin Fife is a great narrator. He really did a great job with all the emotional nuances of this story.
Personally, his voice isn't my cup of tea. I tend to listen to my books anywhere from 1.2 to 1.8 speed and this caused some distortion in the voices he used for the females.

Lovely "what if" where our beloved couple meet in a different way and get to know each other with no interference. A very recommended story.

In Mr Bennet's letter, written just before his death,to his daughter, Elizabeth, he tells her that not only was she his favorite daughter, but that she was like the son he never had. Therefore he places all of his trust in her, giving her the responsibility to care for his wife and her sisters. When Mr. Collins arrives to claim his inheritance, he extends a proposal of marriage to Elizabeth. Elizabeth stalls him, after learning that her sister Mary is interested in Mr. Collins. She recommends that they go to get the approval of one Lady Catherine. It is Elizabeth's hope to turn his attentions from her to Mary.
This all takes place prior to Mr. Bingley coming to Netherfield. And in this variation, Jane is blind, so net expected to make a great match.
There is definitely a love story going on in this tale. My only disappointment was that I wish there had been more detail at the end, as I was not ready for the book to end! I highly recommend the book!

Kind of a downer

Mr Bennett dies, leaving behind a letter for Elizabeth dumping the responsibility for looking after the family all on her, since she's his favorite and like the son he never had. Elizabeth takes this charge seriously, and navigates through one crisis after another. She meets Darcy for the first time at Rosings, where she's dealing with the Mr Collins dilemma, and it's pretty much love at first sight for Darcy and Elizabeth. However, it's not until Darcy comes to Hertfordshire to stay with Bingley that they have a chance to know each other better.

It's nice when Darcy and Elizabeth like each other without going through all of the usual acrimony. However, because Elizabeth's under so much pressure, she always seemed like kind of a pathetic creature, and the romance just didn't shine through. The various situations having to do with the several villains and annoying people seemed contrived and somewhat silly. Although the book is written well enough, I don't really recommend it.

What a delightful book!!!!! I loved it ❤
It was an easy read for me. The book is light-hearted, but not shallow at all. AND I didn’t have to have very much anxiety. And of course, I loved the connection between Elizabeth and Mr Darcy without many troubles and deceit . It was a big pleasure to read.

I love the twists and surprise in this story! Elizabeth devises a very clever scheme! Mr. Collins has a surprising reply to Lady Katherine! Ms. Dixon writes wonderful Pride and Prejudice variations and I have many of her books. “A Favorite Daughter” is my new favorite!

I read this story as part of the Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth: Always and Forever. However as writing a review for each story in that collection would make the review impossibly long I am writing my review(s) as separate books. I did read five of the stories in that collection separately before they were grouped together. This story was 150 pages on my Kindle.

Mr. Bennet has died and leaves a letter for Elizabeth in which he charges her to take care of the rest of the family. A search for an heir allows Elizabeth some time at Longbourn. However, Collins is located and charged by Lady Catherine to take one of the daughters to wife.

(SPOILER: Jane is blind in this story and thus not a logical choice for Collins. End of SPOILER) So Collins, in observing all that Elizabeth is in charge of decides to offer his hand to her. She, in wanting to divert his attention towards Mary, reasons with him that Lady C. should approve of his choice, not letting on that she is taking Mary with her to Rosings as a companion and planning to make sure it is Mary that Lady C. selects as his wife.

Elizabeth only meets Darcy for the first time at Rosings. Each soon finds an attraction towards the other. However this story has some new bumps in the road to HEA. A Mr. Coble (with a history of 3 dead wives) and Lady Catherine have objections. Read to see how those play out.

I found this an interesting story. Although there are not the misunderstandings from canon there is still Elizabeth believing Darcy would never look her way and Darcy having to persuade E. that his feeling are real if only she opens her eyes to see.

This reimagined take on Pride and Prejudice brings new emotional depth to Jane Austen’s classic story. After Mr. Bennet’s untimely death, Elizabeth Bennet is burdened with a powerful sense of duty: to protect and provide for her family at all costs. This added weight gives familiar events a poignant twist, as Elizabeth considers sacrificing her own happiness—possibly even marrying without love—to honor her father’s final request. But as her bond with Mr. Darcy deepens, I was completely drawn into a slow-burning romance filled with restraint, tension, and hope. Rich in character development and emotional stakes, this version beautifully explores themes of loyalty, love, and self-discovery, while remaining true to Austen’s elegant tone. A touching and satisfying read for both longtime Austen fans and newcomers alike.

Audiobook: This was my first experience with P. O. Dixon's work, and it was delightful. The author changed the original "Pride and Prejudice" written by Jane Austen. In this story, Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth met under different circumstances. They became friends. Although I've always been a fan of "Pride and Prejudice", I liked the changes found in this rendition. The story was charming. The characters were more realistic in today's world. Benjamin Fife's narration was great as he provided different voices for the various characters, and his performance kept my attention. I was given a free copy of the audiobook, and I have voluntarily posted this review.

This is a sweet, medium angst, but strong Elizabeth, variation.
Feel sad that Jane is blind, but Elizabeth and Mary seem strong and smart. Lydia does, what she does best, which is get herself in trouble.
Mr. Darcy is Elizabeth's knight in shinning armor... her hero.
We have our normal antagonist and they are handled very well.

Well written and entertaining for a nice story when you don't have forever to read.

Jane Austen being one of my favourite classic authors, I always want to see how other people envision her stories with there re telling of her work. This one was fine. Started with the death of Mr Bennet and Elizabeth has to sort what happens to her family. Elizabeth and Darcy’s first meeting is at Pemberley and she does not really get to see him being proud and of course just falls in love with his good looks. Other aspects of the story are just brushed off.

This story just made me smile. There are hints of the judgmental Lizzy here, but it's been tempered more than it's been exacerbated by circumstances and responsibilities. What a gem Darcy was in this story. At first I thought, surely Ramsgate hasn't happened (it did), so maybe it was that their first meeting was away from Caroline and in a book store that made all the difference. It was a lovely retelling.

This is Darcy and Elizabeth’s story. Elizabeth feels she needs to be the primary care giver and protection for her family. Elizabeth feels desperate and no where to turn, Darcy comes to the rescue. The story was ok, but did not click with me. Narration was good. I received a free copy of this audiobook, and am voluntarily leaving my review.

Duty vs Love

What an enjoyable variation! It was fun to see Mary more involved in the story as well as having Rose Park as the place where Darcy and Elizabeth first met. I think I liked the more open conversation that this couple had as it really enhanced the plot progression and my buy in to their emotional attachment.

This was probably the worst Pride and Prejudice variation that I have read. It was dull, and felt very uncentered from a Darcy and Elizabeth retelling. I felt like it had potential, but it was a total bust for me.

Two and a half stars. Okay but nothing that makes it stand out, other than the villain being a rapacious widower, with Wickham as the sidekick. Oh, and Mary apparently being happy to marry Mr Collins.

I usually love P O Dixon’s work. However, this plot was a bit minimal.
I am working my way through all Dixon’s books so I expect it can only get better.

2.5 stars I love the deviousness of Elizabeth in this one and the pairing of Collins with Mary. But the accidental encounter was not believable.

Truly Romantic!

The way our dear couple meets: sweet. The interaction between the two later: heated. The way they finally come to an understanding: very satisfying. Enjoy!
